When I join Maeve and Scott in the living room, they're both quiet.
"Both of you are weird, you hardly talk yet we're all friends," I complain.
Maeve shrugs.
"I am not that used to talking to new people but with time we'll start talking," she says.
"Alright, no pressure," I smirk.
Maeve's phone rings and she hesitates before picking up.
"Hey... Yeah, I miss you too... Alright then... I'll be there," she speaks to the person at the other end of the line.
She hangs up and looks at me and I know that it's that Scottish guy who has just called her.
"Shoo! Go on, what are waiting for? Run to your Romeo, woman," I say and Roxy who is now out of the shower starts singing, indirectly about Maeve and her new guy.
"Strumming my pain with his fingers, singing my life with his words..." she crosses the room in her towel and stands in front of the tv "...killing me softly with his song, killing me softly
Blake pulls back from our kiss when his phone rings and I stare at him as he speaks to the person on the other end of the call until he hangs up."It's my dad, they're coming back tonight," he informs me."Oh, alright then," I say."Can I... Drop you off at school?" he asks and I nod.As we leave the park, walking towards his car, he gently holds my hand and I find myself smiling. We stop right next to his car when he looks into my eyes."Kyrah, believe me when I say I have feelings for you. As I said, I want to be more than just a friend to you."I nod and he opens the door for me and in a few seconds we are driving out of the park. The ride is an awkward one, no one wants to say anything. Actually, since he told me about his feelings, words seem to have escaped my mouth, I have no idea where to.Moments later, we pull up at the front gate and as I am about to open the door, Blake pulls me back by my h
In my room, I sit down on my bed and stare at the other empty bed, where my roommate would have been sleeping but I don't have one and I don't need one.Someone knocks on the door and I get up to go and open it. I know it's her and it's only been ten minutes since I told her to come to my room. Oh well."I'm finally here," Kyrah says with a tiny smile on her face. She's actually never been inside my room since the semester began because I am always in her room."Come in," I pave way for her to walk in and close the door."Your room looks different now, it's not like I remember. Well arranged and..." she pauses and sniffs the air "... Do I smell strawberry freshener in here?"I shrug and move to my bed. Kyrah looks around and her eyes land on something I didn't want anyone, and I mean anyone, to see. She grabs an old album lying on my dressing table. I must have forgotten to hide it or maybe I am so comfortable with no one coming in my room th
Kyrah's POV"What?" I ask her. I clearly heard what she said but I need to hear it again."She's alive," Roxy says with a firm facial expression."You lied to me, all these years, why?"I seriously can't continue with this conversation calmly, so I start pacing across the room, back and forth."Why? What was the reason? Who was that woman you and your brother lived with back then? Wasn't she your mom?" I ask."Olivia is my aunt. We only called her 'mom' in public," her voice is quite low that I am struggling to hear her words.Immediately I stop in front of her and rub my temple."Where is your mom? Where has she been all these years? How could she leave you and your brother..." I sound angry? Well maybe I am, where in the world has Roxy's mom been? I've never heard of her at all except that she died but how is she still alive and doesn't visit Roxy?Maybe I am overreacting. Well, I haven't heard Roxy's
Roxy's Present (POV)"That was the last time I saw her. She's now in prison. Olivia was taken to hospital and took us in after she found out that our lives at a foster home was horrible. I almost starved myself to death, the food there was pathetic and they didn't treat us well,"Kyrah looks terrified, yet that's not the entire story. Although it feels good to let it all out. I have never told anyone about my story, no one at all."Do you visit your mum?" Kyrah asks, wiping off a tear from her cheek."Yes, but she never wants to see me these days, I don't know why," I fight back tears that are threatening to fall."Since when?" she asks. I better get used to the many questions Kyrah has because I know she has alot of them to throw at me."Three years ago...""What? Why? You mean the last time you saw her was three years ago?""Yes," I sigh "When I used to go there, it got to a point where I waited for her to c
The rest of the week runs smoothly with no drama and unnecessary trouble from Sabrina. As I walk out of my hostel, I lock the door and shove the keys into my tiny clutch bag. I feel relaxed and so I decided to wear a navy blue pair of jeans, a white T-shirt, white sneakers and my favourite pair of loop earrings. I start walking down the hallway headed to Roxy's room to check on her when my phone chimes in my pocket and I fish it out. It's a text from Blake.*Hey beautiful? What are you upto today? I miss you xoxo*The loony smile forming across my face makes me wonder if I am still sane. I start typing away while walking when I bump into someone's rock hard chest. My eyes are directly facing his chest and I look up."Who's making you smile like that? You didn't even see me coming your way," Scott says, looking down at me."Oh, it's...""You don't have to tell me, it's okay. Where are you going?" he inquires."I
At the large metal gate we find four guards fully dressed in their uniforms and with guns. They look unbothered by our presence. One of them is a lady who looks like she's in her mid thirties, her facial expression shows that she's probably tired of life or her job. Or even both.Lazily she starts to speak right after removing a toothpick from her mouth."Identification please," her voice comes out rough. We show her our ID's and she takes them, placing the toothpick back in her mouth."Let them through," she yells at the guard with the keys to the gate and spits saliva on the ground. We head to the next gate which is much bigger. How many gates do they have here anyway?Roxy walks ahead of us and a guard at the second gate recognises her."Long time no see woman, where have you been?" he asks, the word 'you' coming out as 'ju'. His Spanish accent is hilarious and I bite my lip not to laugh. He leans over to hug Roxy who dodges him and
"You must be Kyrah, I've heard alot about you, you seem like a very good young lady," she says smiling at me and I smile back genuinely and move to hug her warmly, "And you are..." she looks at Scott keenly."Scott... Scott Stone," and I hear a gasp from somewhere in the room and that leaves a question mark in my mind. Why are people reacting that way towards Scott?"Oh, wow! You're a Stone alright, I see my daughter is well taken care of. Never let them get into trouble okay?" Scotts gives her a firm handshake."Yes ma'am," he nods while Roxy and I exchange confused looks."So honey, I only have ten minutes here. I missed you, how is your brother?""He's fine mom. We really miss you. How are you doing? Is everything okay?"Alicia pauses and coughs thrice before speaking. Her hands are shaking and she hides them under the table."Honey... I'm sick..." she doesn't get to finish speaking and Roxy jumps up from her chair as if it g
Right after I tuck Roxy in bed, I close her door and stand outside where Scott is. We both stay quiet for a long time with the wind blowing my hair to my face, until Scott decides to break the ice."Is she asleep?" he asks without looking at me."Yeah, I hope she'll be okay. She's just going through alot," I brush the hair off my face."What's her story? I wanna know," he looks at me with eyes full of worry."Are you sure you want to know?" I ask him and he nods."Not here though, it's quite cold outside, how about we go sit in my car?" he suggests.I agree and we walk slowly to the car and get in. As I explain every detail that Roxy told me, I feel a lump growing in my throat and I begin to sob. Scott looks shocked by the whole story and he moves closer and pulls me into a hug."Hush now," he whispers.Suddenly I remember the weird reactions at the mention of Scott's name in the prison and I ask without
