Irritation

He seems to be smiling through the phone but it feels a little forced, like he is sad.

“Hi,” I say, regretting the way I answered. “I'm a little tired from the trip, that's all. Are you okay?” I ask softly.

“Do you want me to lie or tell the truth? Which do you prefer?” he replies after a few moments of silence.

“Give me both options, and I'll tell you which one I prefer.” I laugh to cheer him up a little and break the slight tension of longing.

“Well, I could say I’ve never been better, and I just miss you, but that's the lie, and I suck at lying ever since I met you. I miss you like crazy, and I'm about to get on a plane to come to you, and that's the truth,” he says, bringing a smile to my face.

“I think I'll take the first option and choose to be rational for both of us,” I reply saucily and we laugh together.

“You seem upset. What happened?” he asks. He never fails to amaze me at how sensitive he can be. He so instinctively understands my frame of mind without even needing to see
