Disqualified Major

I arrived at the hospital with sore fingers from so many times I called Hector and his phone remained off.

He'd think I just missed our date on purpose, without even giving an explanation. But I had a reason... My grandmother was the only thing I had in my life, my blood relative... What was left of my mother, my family.

I waited over three hours before they let me in to see her. She was in Intensive Care, but as I had come from far away and was her only family member, they allowed me to stay for a maximum of fifteen minutes, to reassure her.

Mandy was in a more remote space, inside the Intensive Care room itself. Lying on a bed, with several wired devices attached to her body. I approached and felt a pain in my heart to see how pale she was. I touched her icy hand and she opened her eyes, pressing her fingers to mine.

- Baby...

- Hi, Mandy. How it feels?

- I don't think I died, do I? Or are you the one who welcomes people to heaven? She smiled, with difficulty.
