Chapter 39

It was Friday in no time.

Dean and I were busy with work majority of the week. There was a time where he and his team had to pull an all-nighter, so I didn't see him at all that day. I understood, though. He was really working as hard as he could trying to secure this business deal and I was rooting for him heavily.

I also had a lot of work to do at the office, seeing as Mr Hughes had given us a task of submitting the best five works from the recent submissions we've got. There were a lot of submissions and there were a lot of captivating stories, making it difficult to decide.

Connor and I started speaking again. Not like we ever really stopped, according to him. He refrained from bringing the topic of Dean up whenever we spoke and I was grateful for that. I did tell him that we had gotten back together and if the news had hurt him, he definitely did a good job in showing no signs of it. He simply told me that he was happy for me.

I guess he really meant it when he said th

Chapter 41Everyone had finished having dinner and was now simply engaging in mindless chatter with one another before a right time would come for everyone to head home.Dean had grown suspiciously quiet during the course of the evening. He stayed seated in his chair listening to some of my coworkers when they approached him for a conversation.I, on the other hand, was standing beside Lydia who was standing by the table where she stopped to get a drink. I watched, with observatory eyes, as my boyfriend interacted with my coworkers, contemplating joining them or not."Hello? Grace?" Lydia snapped her fingers in my face. "Are you even listening to me?""Huh?" I looked at her. "Oh. No, sorry.""What-""Does Dean look okay to you?" I asked her, my eyes still on him."I don't know, Grace," she shrugged a shoulder, "I wouldn't know how your boyfriend usually behaves when he's okay."Well, that made sense."But, if he wasn't," she added, "I'm sure it has something to do with the way you and

Chapter 42"All done." Dean said after applying ointment on my chest. "See? It looks better than it did last night.""Thanks." I said to him with a small smile. When Dean and I got home last night, he insisted I stand under the shower for a while, seeing as running lukewarm water was the best way to treat a scald. When I got out of the shower and put a big tee on, I was too tired to do anything else so I fell asleep immediately.By the time I woke up, Dean was already up working on a few things on his laptop beside me. I watched him work for a couple minutes before he suggested we shower together.Although the burn wasn't as red as it was last night, Dean still insisted we apply some ointment on it when we got out of the shower. Luckily, I had one in my first aid box, so he took it out of there before sitting us both down on the bed and applying it tenderly. It felt nice to be taken care of so gently over something that wasn't as serious or life threatening.I watched as Dean placed

Chapter 43I had stared at the door so much that I had memorized its every detail.I noticed how the alder wood had two distinctive shades of brown blending into each other and how the door knob was situated at a much lower position than other doors in the office. I also noticed that the lighter brown shade formed certain diamond shaped patterns just at the top of the door. I found the rectangular glass just at the centroid of the door pretty interesting.Quite a number of people had walked past me with warm smiles and greetings while I stood there staring at the unembellished office door. I had thought to myself numerous times already, how ridiculous it was to be pacing back and forth in front of the door, contemplating whether or not I should knock or walk away.Alas, with one final self encouraging breath, I gave the door two gentle knocks."Come in." I heard her euphonious British accent come from inside her office.I did not hesitate when I placed my hand on the door knob and pus

Chapter 44Just as I had planned and intended to, I had gotten up before Dean.Much more earlier.I made sure I had everything in order and in place for how I wanted the day to go. I didn't want a single thing to go wrong. I unconsciously caught myself muttering silent prayers that everything would go according to plan, because natural order of things tend to outweigh whatever plan we set out in life.I made sure I had the living room adorned with suitable decorations. I was careful not to make any noise while I did everything I wanted to. When I was done, there was a broad smile spread across my face and an inward feeling of satisfaction. When I noticed the day getting bright, I hurriedly moved in silent steps back to the room where Dean was still sleeping peacefully on the bed.I carefully slipped back into bed, laying somewhat sideways in a way that my elbows rested on the pillow while my head was supported by my hand. I found myself watching him with intent love-struck eyes as h

Chapter 45I couldn't help the soft laugh that escaped me as Dean continued to press on while he walked closely beside me, "Dean, it's not even that deep-""But it is, you see." He placed a hand on my shoulder just before we stopped in front of the elevator and he pushed the button to pull the doors open. "At least to him.""You're being ridiculous," I gave a playful eye roll just before we stepped into the elevator and pushed the button to the fourth floor, "Rodriguez has worked as this building's receptionist long before I even started working here.""And?""And he's not interested in me!" I smacked his shoulder lightly.A breathy laugh flowed from him at that, "You wouldn't get it, Chip. He was giving you this look."The elevator dinged open and we both stepped out and began walking down the hallway. The weekend had come to an end and I had to get up early for work on this excruciatingly exhausting Monday morning. I had gotten my period the night before, so I basically had to force

Chapter 46I was expecting to see Dean waiting for me outside my office after I made a quick stop there to grab my bag. But, I didn’t.I found it quite odd seeing as his text stated that he was on his way up like five minutes earlier, but I chose not to question it. The thought of him stopping by at Kendra’s office to say hi did cross my mind, but I was quick to recall that Kendra clocked out a while ago. I simply decided to take the elevator down to the ground floor, assuming something delayed him and hoping to see him there.By the time I got out of the elevator, I let my eyes scan around for him. I finally spotted him, or rather, his back, as he stood facing a much shorter lady who appeared to have been speaking to him with the most flirtatious eyes you could imagine. Her brunette hair was in perfect silky waves which flowed all the way to her lower back. She had a round face and full lips which were painted a deep red color. She was dressed in a checkered suit, the better part of

Chapter 47With one gentle screech of my office chair backwards, I stood to my feet and extended my hand for a handshake, “Alright. Thank you so much for coming in, Miss Edison. We look forward to working with you.”Patty stood up as well and shook my hand, “I look forward to working with you too. Thank you so much for giving me this opportunity.”“You did all the work.” I told her with a smile. She returned a grateful smile, “I’ll be heading off now.”“See you soon.” Was the last thing I said to her before she made her way toward the door and out of my office.A couple of days had gone by quite uneventfully. I’ve had a lot of work on my plate which sometimes gets overwhelming, but I do my best to tackle it the best way I can.Dean helps in his own way too. He has this thing where he notices when it becomes a bit much and offers to do anything that’d make the work load more bearable.I found it really sweet, seeing as he had his own work to worry about. I try my best to make sure ever

Chapter 48“Aww, so Dean really is leaving next week?” Lydia asked, sending me a sad look from where she sat on her office chair.I, on the other hand, was sprawled on her couch on my stomach, while my head rested upon the arm of the couch that my hands were hung limply over.“Yeah,” I verified, blowing raspberry, “he is.”“Aww, I bet that makes you very sad.” She pouted.“It does.” I let out a sigh. “Last night, he brought it up and um, it just kind of messed with my head a little.”“How so?” Lydia enquired.“I don’t know, I don’t think he feels that we’ll be able to make long distance work.” I expressed my honest thoughts.“Did he say that?” Lydia asked, raising an eyebrow.“Not particularly, no.”My conversation with Dean last night scared me in more ways than I let on. Hearing Dean talk about our relationship like we wasn’t certain and like he didn’t have faith that we could do what we had set out to do was truly anxiety inducing.I knew what I was up against when I drove all the

"I should've talked to you. But honestly, I didn't want to make you guys worry when there wasn't really much you could do over there. I didn't want you to feel powerless."Mom let out a sigh, "You are so strong and I am so proud of you, Gracie."I blinked back emotional tears, "Thanks, mom.""Are you at the airport already?" She asked me."No, but we're about to head out." I told her, adjusting my phone between my face and my shoulder so I could zip my purse. "Our flight isn't for another two hours.""Okay baby." She said softly. "Text me immediately you land, okay?""Okay mom, I will." I told her. "Bye. I love you.""I love you too." Chapter 62It had been three days since Connor got arrested. And I couldn't express in words how happy I felt now that, that striking pain that seemed like it was crested in my chest had gone. I honestly felt myself take the first step in healing when I witnessed Connor being dragged out of Spring in handcuffs. The police had called me and a few of Connor's assistants in the past to make several statements. It felt a bit triggering but it was helpful. It was needed.Connor would never get the chance to hurt any woman in the manner that he did, ever again. There was a particular calm that had settled in now and it was a calm that I loved. Now that the whole Connor issue had blown over, Dean's father had already started talking traveling arrangements again. Which was only natural, Dean had spent more time in Bath than he was supposed to, leaving a lot of work suspended. And I would remain eternally grateful for the time his father permitted us to have with each other.Dean was set to le

"Are you fucking serious?"I nodded, wishing I wasn't as well, "I am.""And then just Connor showed up at your front door?" She asked, shock still in her tone."He did." I nodded. "Turns out he knew that we broke into his house.""Jesus." She expressed, leaning back in her office chair. The next day, I had to be at work.Yesterday was a lot to take in in general and I honestly did not know what to make of all of it. I was still in shock. After I tended to Dean's wound last night, we simply had dinner and went to bed. I was up early to get ready for work and had a brief conversation with Dean before stepping out.I was currently in Lydia's office, filling her in on everything that happened yesterday and she wasn't taking it better than I did.Lydia reached out to place her hand on mine and asked with an empathetic look on her face, "How do you feel?""To be honest, Lydia," I said, my voice breaking, "I fee

Chapter 60“Remind me why you two need to break into Connor’s house again?” Lydia asked, throwing confused stares at Dean and I.“Well, it’s not really breaking in if I have a key.” I shrugged lightly. It had been four days since we spoke to Audrey. And frankly, we hadn’t made much progress since. The background check Dean had carried out on Connor came back and it wasn’t really much help. It didn’t give us any information other than what we already knew. And if we found any thing a little bit suspicious, we still didn’t have much more to act on it.Getting the CCTV footage seemed more and more impossible by the day. At this point, it was obvious they were toying with us and had no intention whatsoever of letting us take a look at it. And the more we requested for it, the more we stood at risk of Connor finding out that we were on to him.And I didn’t want that to happen.Getting fed up with sitting on our hands and doing nothing, Dean and I decided it would probably be a good idea to

Chapter 59Audrey had agreed to come over to talk. And I gave Lydia a call immediately our conversation over the phone ended. And it wasn’t long before she showed up at my front door.We all waited eagerly for Audrey to arrive.Honestly, it felt surreal that she finally responded to us. It felt like there was so much mystery surrounding what happened with her and Connor and where she had been this entire time and why she completely ghosted everyone.I had a lot of questions for her, to be honest.Because we had a real friendship, regardless of anything. While we waited, Lydia filled Dean and I on how the conversation with her friends turned out, which kind of went south at the end if you ask me. We also told her about our conversation with Mr Flores and everything that led up to him quitting his job.Lydia was just highlighting how much of a terrible person Connor was when the doorbell rang. I sprung up my seat immediately and headed for the front door.I wasted no time in unlocking a

But her views on the entire thing haven’t changed. She still thinks I should suck it up and forget about justice.”“Damn, I’m sorry my love.” Dean said, stealing a quick glance at me in the passenger seat before focusing his attention back on the road. “If she still thinks like that, then she obviously doesn’t believe you. Because it’s impossible to not feel angry about this situation, especially when it involves someone you claim to care about so much.”Dean kept to his word and was at my workplace to pick me up by 5pm sharp. We waited with Lydia for a while before Carlton came to pick her up. Carlton was kind to me, as he has been since the whole thing happened. I could tell what happened to me really made him upset. I mean, apart from the fact that his girlfriend was completely affected by it.He genuinely wanted to help in wha

Chapter 57My ‘suspension’ went by in a blur. And before I knew it, I was ready to get back to work. Not much had happened in the past week, really. There wasn’t much I could do while I was cramped up in my apartment. But having Dean around certainly did make it better.Kendra and I had still not spoken. Connor had still not reached out about his car; I hadn’t heard a word from him since the entire scene at the boardroom.Dean, Lydia and I tried to play detectives the best ways we could. We started small by texting Audrey on literally all social media platforms and hoping for a response. Which hadn’t still come, by the way.Lydia spent everyday trying to get in touch with Mr Flores, but every time they just told her the same thing, that he didn’t show up at work that day.Although it was starting to feel like we weren’t making any progress, I had a much more confident attitude today, knowing I was going back to do hands on investigation.Dean insisted on driving me to work.Lydia’s ca

It seemed like she was still trying to wrap her head around the whole thing.Lydia read through the texts again with my phone in her hand, “But what exactly do you think she wants to say to you? She didn’t particularly give enough context before you invited her over.”I moved over to where Lydia stood and looked at the conversation again.Me: why?Greta: can we meet somewhere private & talk?Me: how does my apartment sound?Greta: that’s okay.Me: I’ll send a pin rn.“Look,” I said again, “I just feel that it’s fantastic that the one person that believes me, aside you g

A lot had happened to me in the past 72 hours and I just needed the ache I was feeling in my chest to go away.I simply wanted to feel okay again. But that wasn’t my reality. This was. While Kendra was leading me to her office, Lydia jumped in, confused as to what was going on. Kendra left me with her and instructed Lydia to get me to her office while she headed back for the boardroom. It was hard for people not to stare and murmur when I was having what was a possible mental breakdown. I bet it was fucking easy for them to stand there and make assumptions and come up with theories for my pain. The world we live in, I swear.Immediately we were in Kendra’s office, Lydia sat me down on the sofa and tried to get me to breathe. She rubbed her palm up and down my back in a soothing manner and whispered softly to me, “Just breathe, baby. You’re gonna be fine.”I tried to do as she said but
