Cora stands in front of my full-length mirror, smoothing down the emerald-green fabric of her prom dress. She turns slightly to check the fit from every angle before she looks over her shoulder at me.

“Well?” she asks with a wide grin.

I lean against my bed frame, legs crossed beneath me, and tilt my head. “You look absolutely gorgeous.”

Cora beams, giving the skirt a little spin so it flares out around her. “I knew this was the one. The color isn’t too much, right?”

“Not at all,” I assure her. “It’s perfect on you. The green makes your eyes look even brighter.”

She studies herself for another moment, then sighs happily. “I can’t believe prom is Wednesday. It’s actually happening.”

I smile at her excitement, but she catches something in my expression. She turns to me, hands on her hips.

“What about you? What are you wearing?”

I pause. “I… don’t know yet.”

Her brows knit together. “Kate. It’s Monday.”

“I’m aware,” I say lightly, but the truth is, I hadn’t really given it much thought.

Inside is a dress. And it is breathtaking. The fabric is soft and delicate, almost ethereal, the color a muted cream that seems to shimmer as it catches the light. The dress looks like something out of an old movie from the 1900s. It is elegant and timeless. The long sleeves are sheer and lace-trimmed. The neckline is high with a beautiful cut. "And I binged Lucifer while I ate a whole pizza by myself," Allison says, her smile practically glowing with pride. I nod my head as I try my best not to make a face. "Wow. Crazy. You crazy girl" plays in my head and a chuckle escapes. "Hey, Allison—""Why do you keep calling me Allison? It's Ally. You're freaking me out." She frowns at me like I'm an idiot. Without waiting for me, she continues to walk on and I roll my eyes. I can remember the conversation that Kate and Ally had on their way to school, so I'm just going to stick with that."Ally," I say, deliberately emphasizing her name,"did you hear about all the new kids that are starting today?" She halts, pivoting toward to me while she shakes her head.“Yeah, apparently fourteen kids. Six are seniors, so they’ll be in our homeroom,” I continue, catching up to her with a wink.Ally huffs and shakes her head again. “You know I don’t care about gossip. It’s so childish.”My teeth clamp down on the inside of my cheek to stop the

I think she blames Kate for it later in a fight.I, on the other hand, have loaded my tray with all kinds of food. I'm starving and it is free. I sit down next to her. A silence settles over us as I eat something that I have never seen in my life, but it looks good and it tastes delightful."Some of the new kids aren't here yet," she says as she plays with a strand of her hair."I thought you weren't one for gossip," I retort back, and she just rolls her eyes. She lays back on the grass."These new guys are weird. It is like they're all fam

She has many selfies and pictures with friends and family. My own phone has almost no selfies. I am not one for selfies, but I like to take photos with my friends. I notice Kate has no photos with Ally which is strange. They have been frien

She opens her locker and puts some books in the locker.I glare at her, but she can't see me. This girl is on some other type of drug. And why does she even have books? I sit in the passenger seat of Jake’s truck, the engine rumbling softly beneath us. His hands grip the steering wheel with white knuckles and I can see the tension in his jaw. Since we left the house, he’s barely spoken, but I can feel his worry radiating off him."Jake," I murmur, reaching over to touch his arm. "I’ll be fine. Really."He glances over at me, his brows furrowed. I can sense him holding back. He’s scared. I know it. He’s always been the protector, the one who takes care of everyone. I don’t want him to feel he must protect me right now."I know," he says quietly, though the doubt laces his voice. "I just don’t like this." His hands leave the steering wheel and rest on his lap. My hand reaches over and I take his hand into mine.I lean over and place a soft kiss on the cheek, trying to reassure him. “You’ll be right here with me,” I say, meeting his gaze. “I’ll keep the phone on.
