It looks like she’s on the verge of tears though. She rolls her eyes, turning away from me and ignoring my calls. Her retreating figure stirs a sharp pang of worry in my chest. I jog up to her, catching her arm gently

“Kate, what is wrong?” I ask while turning her to look at me. She stops and looks me up and down, letting out a sigh. She rubs her face, smearing her make-up. Not again. I cannot laugh at her, not now.

“Nothing,” she says, but I know she is lying. I tilt my head, unwilling to let it slide. She shrugs off my hand, her movements stiff. “Really, nothing. I am drunk beyond comprehension and I am tired, so please leave.” She looks into my eyes, tilting her head with a soft smile. “I am going to say stuff I should not say.”

The vulnerability in her mumble makes me pause, but she shakes her head and starts walking again.

I dart in front of her, blocking her path. She huffs loudly, throwing her head back in frustration.

“Let me at least walk you back home,” I offer. Her head stay

Kate’s POV:I groan, pulling the blanket over my eyes. Ugh, I am never drinking again. What was I thinking? My head is pounding and my stomach makes a funny noise. I knew I would regret drinking, but I still did it.Squinting against the harsh light, I peel the blanket off my face. Big mistake. The brightness feels like needles stabbing my skull. I groan again, rubbing my temples. I sigh as I sit up, the pounding causing my vision to blur.Water. I need water. With a determined groan, I stumble out of bed toward the kitchen. My dad and mum are sitting at the island in the kitchen, both drinking tea in silence.“Morning,” I say as I enter the kitchen. My dad chuckles at my state while my mum shakes her head.“Morning. How was your night?” my dad asks. I nod slowly while I pour water into one of the larger glasses.“It was fun, but I am not doing it again,” I admit, causing my dad to laugh. I down the glass of water. My mum stands up and opens one of the cabinets.“We were worried. Yo

  • How To Survive Werewolves   This Is Why I Don't Socialize

The afternoon had been exhausting, but the place was finally spotless. I left my number for Allison’s mother since she hadn’t woken up during the time we spent cleaning.“That place is cleaner than my apartment,” Jake says with a satisfied tone as his truck comes to a stop.I let out a soft laugh and nod. “Thank you so much for helping me. You really did not have to,” I say as I open the door and nearly stumble out, my body stiff from last night’s dancing.“It is nothing. I had nothing else to do anyway.” He walks to the back of his truck and I follow him. I grab two bags from the back before heading to a nearby pile. The smell causes me to gag and I have to hide my nose in my shirt. Ugh, I forgot the stench of this place.Jake laughs at my reaction, walking past me with four bags. Show off. I throw the bags onto the pile and head back for more. As I work, a memory surfaces—the last time we were here.We have come such a long way, from not being allowed to come within a few feet

I watch as Jake takes my hand and places it on his chest. I roll my eyes.“You just want me to feel your muscles,” I say, a laugh bubbling up despite myself. Jake’s eyes light up.“That’s what you said last night.” He chuckles and I cannot stop smiling. There’s something different about him today. The shadows that usually haunt his face have softened. The weight he carries seems lighter. His usual frown has disappeared, leaving behind a soft gaze.I feel the warmth from him on my hand that is still resting on his chest. And he is actually allowing me to come close to him, initiating the touch. He is not flinching away.He takes my other hand, guiding it to his face. His cheek comes into contact with my palm and I cup his face. My heart thumps in my chest as I have to focus on my breathing.Jake pulls me closer, his hands resting on my hips. I have a shy smile on my face with heat rushing to my cheeks. I feel like a silly middle-school girl, giggling at his hands on my waist. I have n

The atmosphere is even more spirited than the previous game. The cheerleaders from the other school just finished their routine and we are waiting for our introduction. When we are called, Cora leads us out onto the field, even though I am the cheer captain. I asked her since this would be my first time cheering and that is enough stress. I do not need the additional stress from leading the girls. My high pony whips as I jog to my place. We get into formation and she lets out a cheer, indicating for us to start the routine. We move effortlessly through the routine and I have a wide smile. I must admit that this is a lot of fun. Cora shouts again and we end the routine with a power stance. Our side of the bleachers breaks into deafening cheers and I look at Cora. She flashes me a smile and she hurries to me, pulling me into a hug. We are both out of breath, still giggly from the nerves. We head to the line where the football team is going to run through. Cora reaches for my hand and I

I turn to Cora and we both take a moment to register that our team just won. Cora is the first to react and she starts to cheer loudly.“We won!” Cora shouts at the top of her lungs and I let out a loud laugh. The excitement fills me with adrenaline and I cannot contain myself. I run to the field with the rest of the cheer girls and our side of the bleachers.Cora throws her arm over my shoulders and we dance together, singing along as loud as we can when another song plays.“We won!” Cora shouts again, hugging me tightly. I hug her back and we sway from side to side. I smile widely, realizing that we have also reconnected. Cora pulls back, flashing me a warm smile.“We won,” I repeat. The rest of the cheer girls have joined us and we are all talking over each other. Someone taps my shoulder and I turn slightly to see who it is.Wes smiles at me, his hands pulling me in for a quick embrace.“Well done,” he says when he pulls back. “You saved the game,” he says with a satisfied smile.

Cora and I walk arm-in-arm toward the football field, the remnants of our volleyball training still evident in the light sheen of sweat on her face. Despite all that, she’s practically bouncing with excitement."Grayson said he’d take me home!" she gushes, her smile lighting up. "Can you believe it?"I chuckle. "I can believe you’re about to hyperventilate over it."Cora groans dramatically, clutching her side. "Volleyball is no joke. I thought cheerleading was intense, but this? It’s like boot camp.""Tell me about it," I say, glancing at her with a grin."Suicides are actual torture," she grumbles. We step onto the field, and my mood immediately sours.I notice Allison standing next to Tyler and I audibly let out a sigh. Cora looks to me and follows my gaze before she also scoffs.“How did those two get together?” she asks with her gaze still glued to them. I shrug. • How To Survive Werewolves   The End

Jake has never loved anything the way he loves her. From the moment he first saw her, mouth set in a scowl, calling Tyler an asshole for being a dick to Allison, he knew she was different. She wasn’t afraid of them. Of him. And when she nearly tripped in Art class, he caught her. His hands steadying her waist. That was when it hit him.Mate.He ignored it. Pushed it down. But he felt it, deep in his bones, something undeniable and terrifying all at once. He tried to stay away, tried not to look at her, but Kate was Kate. She was impossible to ignore. He remembers her at that party, wearing something that made his chest feel tight, the way she swung at Max without hesitation. He helped her clean up afterward. He remembers giving her his black leather jacket, the way she wore it like she was meant to, like it belonged to her more than it ever did to him. The way she clutched it around herself when she was cold, breathing in his scent like it was her favorite thing in the world. He rem

The ground is cold beneath me. I feel it pressing against my back, the rough bite of dirt and leaves. But it doesn’t hurt. Nothing does. There’s just a strange and heavy sensation in my chest, like someone has reached inside and stolen the air from my lungs.I hear Jake before I see him.Not his voice. His snarl. It doesn’t sound human. It doesn’t even sound werewolf. It’s something deeper, darker, like the embodiment of every nightmare, every fear, every unholy thing clawing its way to the surface. And then. Blaire’s screams. This is different. This is fear. Raw. Terrified. Begging.“Jake. Jake, please! Wait—”The sound that follows is wet. A sickening crack. A choked gurgle. Then silence.I stare up at the sky, feeling the edges of my vision flicker. The stars look sharper than usual, like someone took a knife to the sky and carved them out. I wonder if that means I’m dying.Jake is there.I don’t even register him moving. One second, he was ripping Blaire apart. The next, he’s abo

The battle rages on around me, the scent of blood thick in the air and it mixes with the damp earth beneath my boots. My breath is ragged and my arms aching, but I keep moving. I have to find Jake.Gunfire cracks in the distance, each shot sending a sharp jolt through my body. The screams, the growls, the clash of metal against flesh. It all forms a deafening, chaotic symphony that threatens to drown me. I shove through the dense trees as my eyes dart between the shifting shadows. I squint my eyes when I see a figure on the ground.Bianca.My stomach drops. Blood pools beneath her, seeping into the dirt. I rush forward and fall to my knees beside her. Her breathing is shallow, her hands weakly pressing against the wound in her abdomen."Shit," I mutter, tearing at my gear, my fingers fumbling for the small vial of antidote Wes gave me.The forest blurs. The air thickens, the sound of battle dulls into something distant, something unimportant. In its place, I hear another voice. A me

The ground trembles beneath my feet as flames roar to life, licking up the trees. The blast illuminates the night in an instant, casting flickering shadows. The pack scatters, dodging falling embers and diving for cover as smoke curls into the air.For a split second, there’s nothing but ringing in my ears. Muffled shouts. The distant snap of branches. The crackling of fire eating through the dry leaves. The sharp crack of bullets pierces the chaos, but the pack is ready. They move like shadows, weaving between trees and bushes. The pack house is buzzing with quiet, focused energy when Jake and I step inside. Every single person is here. Some are standing in tense groups while others are sitting with protective gear. The air is thick with anticipation.Across the room, Allison and Tyler are deep in conversation with a small group. Among them, Oliver and Bianca stand slightly apart, listening intently.Oliver notices me first. His gaze flickers in my direction and I give him a small smile, lifting my fingers in a wave. He hesitates before nodding back with a slight smile.Jake keeps walking, guiding me toward the far end of the room, where Wes is hunched over a makeshift lab setup. His hands move quickly, mixing liquids, analyzing samples. He is so focused he barely registers us approaching.“How close are you?” Jake asks.Wes exhales sharply. “Very.” He doesn’t look up, instead pointing to a row of vials in front of him. “I’ve narrowed it down, but I need fresh human blood to test the final component.”“Take

The drive to the pack’s hideout is quiet, the hum of the engine blending with the distant sounds of the night. The road twists through dense forest, barely visible from the main highway. It’s a place only a few know about, tucked away behind thick trees and old, winding paths. I do not think I would be able to find it again on my own. Jake drives with one hand on the wheel, the other resting lazily on my hand which is on his thigh. My thumb moves in slow circles and he has a soft smile on his lips. By the time we pull up to the hidden pack house, my heart feels heavier. Jake parks in a concealed spot near the pack house. I unzip the bag on my lap and take out Jake’s clothes before getting my own. I place the bag back on the ground, careful not to wrinkle my dress. It’s ridiculous, really/ Considering everything we’ve just done, you’d think I wouldn’t care so much about keeping it pristine. But I do.Jake just watches, his lips twitching in that quiet but amused way of his.“What?”

I sigh in content as I press my forehead to Jake, still catching my breath. His hands are steady on my hips. Plus, the position is… not ideal for an easy exit. I let out a soft huff. “Jake.”He lets out a quiet laugh as his hands move from my waist and place them under my thighs. Then, with zero effort, he picks me up and moves me onto the passenger seat like I weigh nothing.“Show off,” I mutter, adjusting my dress. He smirks and runs a hand through his hair. “You were taking too long.”I just shake my head, but there’s a grin tugging at my lips. I glance down at my thigh before I grab a tissue from my purse.“Lovely,” I say flatly. “Thanks for that.”Jake leans his head back against the seat, watching me with that quiet amusement. “Y

We move quickly but quietly toward Jake’s truck, my heart pounding in my chest. The night air is cool against my skin, but it does nothing to calm the heat inside me. We hurry into the truck and Jake starts the engine before he maneuvers the truck toward the farthest corner of the parking lot.The moment he shifts into park, his lips are on mine again. I sigh into the kiss as my hand moves over his chest to settle on his neck. His hands roam my waist before he pulls me onto his lap, making me gasp.“Jake,” I scold between kisses, pressing my hands to his chest. “Be careful with the dress.”He chuckles, low and deep, his breath warm against my neck. “I’ve got you,” he murmurs, fingers tracing the fabric slowly before he lifts it just enough.A giggle escapes me as he shifts my underwear aside. His touch sends shivers up my spine. “I’ve never done this in a car before,” I admit, breathless. The space feels both thrilling and awkward, the newness of it making me giddy.“I’ll take care o
