A bell jingles when I walk into a book store called “Jinx’s Magic Shop” and my nose is immediately assaulted by the smell of stale books mixed in with a lemon-scented air freshener.
Moving away when someone tries to exit the store, I look around and admire the place. It looks pretty causal, with lines of shelves surrounding every corner of the left side of the room and comfortable sofas on the other. The crowd in the store is pretty small, with only a few settled down as they quietly read, and situated in the middle is a large desk occupied by a young brunette with glasses. There’s a computer on the desk and its surrounded by a lot of books heaped upon one another, she raises her head and smiles in greeting when I drew closer and shuts the novel she was reading.
“Can I help you?”
“Hmm, I just wanted to look around. Hope that’s okay.”
“Yeah, of course, you can.” She nods, motioning for me to go ahead.
Saying a quick thanks, I make my way through the shelves and run my hands down the lines of books. I searched around for any book that could be related to elemental’s and found a few, just when I was about to trace my way back to the storefront and settle down on one of the sofa’s to read, the sound of something being hit made me pause. Frowning, I step closer to the shelf behind me and stare at the couple on the other side over the rim of books. A female blonde is standing impossibly close as she whispers to a guy, her hand raised on the shelf behind his head and the other settled on the guy's bicep to stop him from leaving.
The male has his hair dyed platinum blonde with his dark roots showing. He’s in a fitted green t-shirt, the name Jinx’s bookshop written in bold letters in the middle and his back is practically plastered to the shelf behind him as he unsuccessfully tries to lean away from her touch. He’s glaring down at the blonde with barely concealed annoyance, and I raise a brow in interest, sneakily moving closer so I can hear what they’re talking about. “Look, Lia, I already helped you locate your book so if that’s all you need from me then I need to go.”
He quickly steps away from her and looks about ready to bolt but she grabs onto his arm and pulls him back with force, almost knocking down some books from the shelves. Wow, she’s strong. “Wait a minute, aren’t you forgetting something."
“Oh, that’s right,” Holding back the anger blazing in his eyes, he brushed her hand off his body in annoyance. “Make sure to purchase the book before you leave.”
“That isn’t what I meant and you know it,” She narrows her eyes, taking a step closer so she’s crowding his personal space. Both hands raised on the bookshelf to cage him in. I wasn’t the only one to notice the way her generous breasts threatened to spill out of her top when she pressed her body very close to his, but the guy looked unaffected by the sight. Or at least he’s trying to look unaffected, either that or he’s constipated. “You still haven’t replied to my messages?”
“I thought my blatant show of ignoring you was enough of an answer but it seems I just need to be direct.” He smiles tightly. “No thanks Lia, I’m not interested in being your boy toy. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have better things to do.”
Well ouch!
He used her shock to push her aside and slip from out of her hold as he hurries away, pretending to be looking at the books on the shelf I duck a little when he walks past where I’m standing. Releasing a sigh of relief when he didn’t notice me, I straighten and turn my attention back to the girl named Lia, watching as she let out an irritated huff and threw the book in her hand in anger. Childishly, she stomps on it with her heeled boot to appease her rage before letting out a small scream of frustration.
I watch her make a dramatic exit before stepping out from between the shelves a couple of seconds later, eyes cautiously searching just in case.
Shaking my head in amusement I trace my way back to the storefront and settle on one of the sofa’s to read. I feel the need to arm myself with a lot of knowledge now that I know what I could become, the first book I’d picked is called History of Elementals. On the first page is the beautiful design of the black interlaced knots in the middle of the page. Seeing the knot, I’m reminded of my black triquetra tattoo and shift uncomfortably.
Shaking off my wandering thoughts I quickly flip through the next few pages until I get to the first chapter. I read the brief description of how elemental conjurers came to be, surprised to find out we’re not aliens nor do we come from some supernatural race. Our powers came about due to an unknown energy spread in certain parts of Europe by particles of an asteroid that fell upon earth centuries ago, but what confused me is that this energy only affected a few newborn babies brought into this world at that specific time the asteroids landed on earth. No one knew anything about the energy, nor did they see or sense it, the only indication that a change occurred on earth was when the first batch of 15-year-old teenagers had their tattoos and started to experience changes. I swipe to the next page and see the name CORAL AILEEN KENSWORTH written in bold letters. The title of the chapter reads CORAL’S BEGINNING, and I settle back to read.
Coral Aileen Kensworth, born on the 4th of August 1420. Daughter to the late Crown Prince Kent Kensworth and Crown Princess Victoria Kensworth, and granddaughter to the late King of England. King Edward Lucas Kensworth. She was once engaged to be married to a Duke’s son, Ronald Lockhart, but the engagement was broken off after her disguised death at sea. Coral formed elemental society by recruiting 40 young conjurers after travelling through Europe with her beloved husband, a young lad who was her most trusted confidant, and her loyal maid. Knight Nicholai Vent, Coral’s husband was the first person she met and recruited for her cause due to his ability over the Air Element, they fell in love a few months later and lived in Scotland for an entire year before leaving for a different country after their marriage.
A young, Scottish lad whose name was John McKinney, became her second recruit. She discovered him in France and coerced him to join her cause after discovering his powers over the Earth Element.
Anastasia Litton, a poor orphan found in the streets of Rome became her third recruit and her maid. She had the ability over the Water Element.
Through years of searching, the four of them were finally able to gather 40 more recruits and with their help, Coral&Knight Academy came to be in Paris. It took years to grow the society in secret under the watchful eyes of the world, but from that moment Elemental society was formed. Coral was not only famous for her success in forming a hidden society for people with magical abilities, but also for her abilities to control all four main elements. She was known to be extremely powerful and a strict monarch who ruled her kingdom with a mountain of courage, fairness, and bravery in the heart. I swipe the page expecting to see more history written on Coral but was disappointed to see that was it. The history of her husband, Nicholai Vent, and maid, Anastasia Litton is very brief and pretty much everything said beneath their names is the same thing written under Coral’s. The only difference is, and possibly the reason why her maid is talked about at all is that Anastasia Litton happened to be the mother to societies first ever sub and defect.
It’s stated that she was impregnated by an unknown man, whom many believe had been human, and had given birth to a set of twins with a lot of complication that unfortunately led to her death. These twins, when of age were discovered to be what society now calls a sub and a defect. I also checked if the file had anything more to say about the young boy who became Coral’s trusted confidant but there was absolutely nothing interesting that could be said about him. The book only stated he’d grown up to be a scientific researcher who’d written down his theoretic research in 6 different dairies, these dairies have either ended up being lost or concealed within the council’s reach. There is one notable thing said about him though, it is said that he discovered a stone inscription written in a foreign language lost with time.
And this stone is believed to be something of importance to society and our history. There’s a picture of the stone down below but I don’t give the picture more than a glance.
According to history, Coral’s tattoo is unique in the world of elemental’s for multiple reasons, one because there’s none like it, two because of it’s placement, three because her powers are theorized to be unlimited. It says here that her ability to control all elements aren’t the end of her powers, she also can conjure every unique ability only within the control of subs.
While every other pure elemental is stronger, their powers are only limited with conjuring the element they possess. Meaning, they can’t conjure heat or ice, or control vines like the subs, and likewise, the subs don’t have control over the main element. It’s another thing that separates these two different classes of elemental’s. Coral’s powers do not stop there though, she also controls a dark, and dangerous ability called the blood element. With this element, she can bend and manipulate the blood of any human or animal under her control. Meaning if she so chooses, she could simply exterminate the life of anyone she chooses by simply manipulating the blood vessels within the heart of her enemy.
Though never used before an audience, many rumours circulated that she had used this ability on quite a several people who dared to become her enemy which is one of the reasons she became a leader both feared and loved. Loved for her stance to fight for a better future for their society, but also feared because of how powerful she truly was.
Sighing, I run a hand through my hair and rub my eyes tiredly. Shutting the book close I decided to focus on another one, I don’t think I’d be able to stay sane if I continued reading. If I inherited this ancestor’s abilities, I don’t want to think about what dangerous ability I can control. The next book talks vastly about our elements and tattoos. How our tattoos are connected to our abilities, and how these tattoos grant us the abilities to manipulate each element without having to draw from the main source itself. As each century pass, it’s being discovered that quite a several subs are developing unique abilities with every generation being born and no one knows why or how. It’s simple as if their blood is advancing but different from that of a pure elemental.
The bell hanging on the front door jingles and distracts me, and I raise my head to see the redhead from yesterday, Rae, walk in with a wide smile on her face. She waves as soon as she spots me and I sit up in surprise, rising to my feet when she draws closer.
“Hey, what-” Before I could finish I was tackled in a hug and had to keep my feet planted on the ground to stay upright. I wince when the action made the injury on my shoulder hurt slightly.
“Oh my gosh am so glad you’re alright,” She pulled back and ran her eyes swiftly over me. “Dana told me to stay away and let you rest for a bit but I was so excited to see you that I couldn’t wait.”
She grinned in that peppy cheerleader way and I just stared at her with a puzzled frown. “Am sure you must have billions of questions so don’t worry, I’m here to answer them.”
“Uhh… how about we introduce ourselves first and then talk.” I smile slightly, motioning for her to take a seat on the sofa across from me as I settle back down.
“Oh silly me,” She giggled and rolled her eyes, stretching out a hand. “Am Rae Carter, your cousin!”
"Cousin?”
My smile drops in surprise and she nods emphatically. “Yup, cousin. Grandfather had loose scruples and he fathered a lot of children he likes to refer to has his “personal bastards”.” I was astounded by the blunt statement, looking around to see quite a few eyes were upon the both of us as she chatted away loudly. “Dad and Dana were the only two he acknowledged and that was because there was a lot of push and shove between him and your father, though he never saw them as his children... just parasites he’s keeping around because they’re “useful”.” Wait, what, I’m also related to the doctor? “Fortunately for you, your dad was the only one he had legitimately and the only child he loved, which is why you guys get all the fortune.” Oh wow, I blink. She has no filter what so ever. “My father was bitter about it at first but he got over it with time, soon he
It’s my third day in the academy and after the whole weird episode with Rae’s family yesterday, she drove me back to Steven’s place and I stayed locked in my room for the entire day. Didn’t even come down for dinner because I wanted to avoid any awkwardness between me and Dana. Waking up this morning, I was relieved when it came to my attention Dana wouldn’t be having breakfast with us, unfortunately, Steven announced he’d suddenly come into contact with a trusted psychiatrist who a friend of the family and he went as far as to schedule me an appointment. Today. Without even asking first. She’s the last-minute result and he didn’t want to lose her, apparently finding a trustworthy therapist in our society is that hard. This now leads us to this moment, Steven and I standing before an old grey door waiting for the occupant on the other side to answer after he just knocked twice. As if
Seated on the padded mat in nothing but yoga pants and a crop top, I wonder why Steven dragged me here after we drove back from Amelia’s. Staring around the room I wonder if taking yoga classes is part of students curriculum, the lights in the room are all turned off except for the multi-coloured led lights hanging in the middle of the ceiling. It changes colours every couple of seconds, and I lean back on my hands as I close my eyes to the soft, hypnotizing sound of the ocean coming from the speakers. The doors of the practice room open and Steven steps in a loose grey tank and black shorts, pulling off his shoes he walks across the room and draws closer and I rise to my feet. “Sorry if I kept you waiting.” “Why are we here?” I ask, wanting to get straight to the point. Smiling, he stands before me and lets out a long sigh, while settlin
The black gloves worn over my hands do not sit well with me, but while the tattoo on my biceps can be covered by clothes, the ones in the centre of my palms cannot be covered. So whether I’m within the academy or out of it, I have no choice but to wear gloves. Steven wants to hide the fact that I’m an Elementalist that’s what people like me and my ancestor are called. A one of a kind conjurer with powers that is beyond one’s imaginations. It’s my fourth day, and I’m back in Amelia’s study. She’s once again seated in front of me with a clipboard and a pen, legs crossed over one another as we stare at each other in silence. I notice she isn’t in a cheery disposition unlike yesterday, and wonder who pissed in her teacup. “So, Steven told me of what you guys did yesterday.” “Did he?” I ask, snorting. “Look, I want to be here just as much as you do Coral.” She s
The rest of the week flies by with me shuffling both meditations with Steven and therapy with Amelia. I haven’t seen either hind or hair of anyone except Steven and Amelia and the occasional strangers I see whenever I go out on a stroll in the morning. I don’t know if Steven asked them to give me space but I’m grateful for the reprieve. Dana and Michael don’t seem like trouble, and I know for a fact that Dana constantly checks up on me at night when she thinks I’m sleeping, but Rae is a whole ball of energy I don’t have the strength to deal with. Therapy has been great, for lack of a better word. I never knew how much worry, fear, anger, and pain I’d been holding back until I started to unlock my Pandora box. We tackled issues in my life as a kid and how I’d always felt alone before my step-father arrived, we talked about how angry and upset I am with my mother for not ever telling me about everything before she passed. How stressed and
“Say, what do you think… about practising without your blindfold today?” I tense at the carefully laced question, eyes rising to stare at Steven in surprise. I wanted to be sure I heard right, and judging by the sheepish, inquiring look on his face I know he did just asked me to conjure fire without my sight hindered. We’re standing barefoot in his backyard and once again I’m in yoga pants, a thin long sleeve hoodie, and a black sports-bra while he’s dressed casually in shorts and a loose tank top. “I don’t think that’s such a good idea-” “Just hear me out okay,” He interrupts, raising his hands to stop me when I tried to say something else. “Amelia has you on those antidepressants and Propranolol, so it should be fine for you to face your fears now. Plus, I read up online that one of the
Run... my darling, Run! I stumbled to a stop at the sight of my parents, both of them on their knees, their arms wrapped around each other. Their eyes are wide with horror while staring at the cloaked figure looming over them with a sword in hand. None of them noticed my presence as of yet, so I slowly inch forward in fear. My mother suddenly looks my way, urging me to obey with her eyes, her soft voice mentally screaming at me to run! Sitting upright with a gasp, I looked around as panic gripped my chest, my breathing coming out in laboured breathes. My wide, frantic, and disoriented eyes searched for the flames, for my parents, or the third presence within the room. Except there's nothing but plaster walls and shelves filled with books. Only, when a soft, feminine voice floated past my panic thoughts did I slowly pull back to the present. Just lik
My body trembles in response when a thousand sensations race through my skin. Strangely, I feel a jerking sensation yank me forward into a blinding light, almost as if I’m being dragged by a string. In what feels like slow motion, I’m strutting abruptly into some kind of vision. Murky and indecipherable at first, until I take a closer look at my surroundings. I look around in astonishment, gaping at what used to be the building of my parent’s apartment home in New York. I whirl around in shock, bewildered by the sight of everything. I can hear the bustling and loud blaring noise of the cars and people moving about on the streets of Manhattan. I can feel the cool evening breeze on my skin, and can even inhale the aroma coming from the hot-dog stand a couple of feet away. This feeling is bizarre, like an out-of-body experience, except all my senses are entirely active and alive.
Trembling violently as she continues to scream, she rose to her feet and swung the bat widely in the air. Hitting her seat in the process and sending it flying across the room.“When I learned about you and your mother after losing my baby, you have no idea the rage I felt!” She screams, pacing back and forth as if possessed.Stopping, she stares off into space, a smile taking over her features when she points the bat at nothing in particular. I eye her carefully, slowly calling forth my powers as I continue to burn through the ropes. Only this time, I made the heat stronger before she loses it on me completely.“But then a plan suddenly came to me. A perfect plan to get revenge against everyone that messed with me.” Turning the bat my way, she grinned sadistically. “And they all ended with you being dead.”I immediately let go of my powers when she takes careful steps towards me with the bat still raised. Shutting my e
Letting me go abruptly, she walks back to her chair and settles down. “Let me tell you a story while you heal, and then we’ll continue. Okay?” She grins, winking.“Back when your parents and I were still friends, our little group of misfits was very close. It included me, your parents, and of course Dana and Kingsley. But then everything went to shit when feelings started becoming complicated."She breathes in softly, a dreamy smile on her lips. “Your father was the eye of every female back in our day. Handsome, from a wealthy elite family, tall, educated, brilliant… he was all and more of those things and it made any girl desperately want him. But, unfortunately, he only had eyes for your bitch of a mother.” She snorts, a look of disdain twisted on her face.Swallowing despite the blood in my mouth, I breathe in slowly when my sight started to become clearer little by little. Wiggling against the ropes tied around my b
Coming to, my eyes fluttered open to see a blurry figure sitting on a chair in front of me. When my vision clears, I gasp in shock at the sight of a smirking Miss Rosa. She has her elbows rested on her knees, leaning forward her lips parted to speak. “Welcome back little Coral.” She smiles sweetly, though her eyes blazed with a dark promise that sent a shiver of cold fear down my spine. Remembering all the things that happened the last time I awoke, my hands immediately fly to my throat with a gasp and I’m surprised to realize my bounds have been loosened and my throat is completely healed. Instead, my hands are bound together before me and each one of my legs is tied to the leg of the chair I’m seated on. Eyes wide, I look around and took notice of the fact that I’m in some kind of warehouse. Every window is sealed shut and taped with garbage bags. Eyes flittering around, they hesitate on a gas tank a few feet away. I hope she isn’t planning to u
Striding out of the elevators with my arms linked around Lillian and Tamil’s, we practically skipped as we walked.Neither one of us found a match, and formost of our classmates, that was something to be sad about. We, on the other hand, are thrilled we didn’t embarrass ourselves in front of the company’s newest set of trainees who had been present in the room taking notes while our tests were conducted.Spotting Rae and Micheal, I waved to get their attention as we headed their way, but they weren’t looking. I was just to call out to them when a series of gunshots were fired from various directions.I heard them before I saw them, and my instincts immediately kicked in.Suddenly, I was in front of the girls with my hands up in the air and a shield of fire surrounding the three of us. The flaming glass blocked the gunshots like a shield of metal and sent them in various directions.People ran a
“You owe me a hundred bucks.” I stare at my cousins with an expression of irritation, glaring at the hand Rae held out to Micheal with a triumphant expression on her face.Grudgingly, Micheal drops a handful of bills on her outstretched palm with a look of annoyance. The two of them had made a bet on whether or not I would bail on taking the test, and obviously, Rae won.Shaking my head, I wonder why I didn’t just come along with my classmates.Ever since it’s been revealed I’m an Elementalist, I’ve avoided confrontation and I’ve been hiding out at Steven and Dana’s. My I-pad is switched off and the guys are banned from letting me know what people are saying on the elemental splash.Next week, final exams will begin and I’m so not looking forward to it. Especially since I promised both Tamil and Lillian that we’ll study together long before this whole incident. “We’re here!&rdq
I’ve gone and gotten myself into deep, shitting trouble.Hands placed before me, I bite down on my lower lips as I nervously awaited judgement from Steven. He gazed at me, seated behind his desk in silence, his hands crossed in front of his chest with a hard penetrating glare. After crawling my way back into the utility closet, imagine my surprise to find my father standing right in front of those doors waiting for me, with a sheepish looking Liam standing a few feet behind. Now you’d think that would be the end of my problems... Unfortunately, it's not. Thanks once again toLiam, my video, thevery video he used to threaten me is currently being viewed by every elemental within the society. When he realized he couldn’t get back to me after an hour of waiting for a reply, he panicked and hurried his ass over to Steven to tell him what we’d done. And, in his haste to get to Steven, the blo
Crawling forward, I couldn’t ignore the cobwebs, dust, and possibly dead insects I may have touched with my hands. The hole is thankfully not long, and there’s a metal ladder cemented at the edge. Looking down, I couldn’t see anything but darkness. Pointing my torch down I could barely make out anything except the fact that the ladder is pretty short, and there’s no way of telling if there’s anything beneath.Leaving my chances up to fate I carefully make my way down the rusty ladder, and once I got to the last stair, jumped down. I landed in a crouch below before rising to my feet. Pointing the torch to the walls, I found 2 light switches and turned them on, and to my surprise, the tunnels lit up immediately. The tunnels are a lot larger than I expected them to be, built with clay and plaster that filled the interstices and revetted the entire face of the sealing walls. Over the sealed covers, incised as coverings are plastered bricks for closure.
Unhurriedly striding down the darkened hallway, I follow her steps and make sure to keep mine as quiet as possible. Nervous perspiration rolled down my spine, soaking my silk blouse, and it coated the skin of my upper lip.Wiping it away, I halt and quickly hide behind a wall, pressing my back against the cool surface to make sure she doesn’t see me when she hesitates for a short second to take a peek around.Arriving back at the academy, I didn’t expect to catch the little rat sneaking into school grounds like a thief. I have no idea what she plans to do, but I for one plan on using this opportunity fate laid in my hands to finally end it all.She narrows her eyes, before shrugging and continuing forward. I wait for a few minutes before pushing off the wall to follow after her, but I get distracted by the feeling of my phone vibrating in my pocket and quickly pulled it out of my jacket.Lifting my head, my eyes widen in disbelief when I realize I’ve lost sig
“Little Ray’s back!” Camille yells into the room as soon as she opens the front door and sees me, motioning me in with a beer she wraps an arm around my neck as soon as I step through the threshold, staring down at me expectantly.“Heard you were practising all alone with the stud you kissed, how did it go?”Frowning, I wonder when that incident is ever going to leave the minds of everyone. “It went fine., I mumble, my eyes fluttering from one bright face to the other.Camille steps around me to settle on the couch and I glance from the crowded living room to the kitchen in confusion. “Why the hell are you guys holding beers, and where did it come from?” I ask, my gaze directed at both Tiffany and Beatrice in accusation. They’re moving run around the kitchen counter with an 8-pack in each hand, a pack of beer which shouldn’t even be here since the academy prohibits alcohol on school grounds.“Relax Coral, it’s just light beer.” Tiffany shrugs as if that
