What do you do after buying a dead body?
For me, I went back to my quiet little apartment. No parents. They died five years ago and the closest person I had as a guardian was my elder brother who was barely around due to the nature of his job.
Efe, my brother was a journalist and you couldn't make it being a journalist in a small boring town like Ketu so he moved around a lot in search of bigger stories.
On getting home, I quickly heated the noodles I had made earlier that morning before heading for school and headed straight for my bed.
I did my best not to think about anything that happened as I ate quietly that night. We weren't caught. I'd sleep it off and by tomorrow I would be over it.
Just then, my phone vibrated from a text.
'Hey, how u holding up?'
It was an unknown number. I sat up, wondering who it could be.
My phone beeped again.
'It's Veronica'
It only increased my curiosity.
'How did you get my number?' I asked.
'I have my ways' She replied with a winking emoji.
I scoffed.
'You're crazy.'
'I know.'
I chuckled.
'Thank you for today.'
'You're welcome. Goodnight.'
'Night.'
Everything didn't blow over as I had thought. I for one was extremely worried about what was going to happen next. I mean, Sylvester had died exactly the way Margret said he would, and she claims she did it. If the same thing was coming for me, I had to stop it somehow.
I tried researching the game and for any case where something like this had happened, nothing useful came up. It all seemed like fairy tales on the internet.
Great! My life was turning into a movie.
I decided I needed help but everyone seemed distant after that night. Margret wasn't returning my calls and I was avoiding Joana's because June begged not to tell her about the game. There was no one else I could meet but fortunately, Veronica sought me first.
She texted me again on a Saturday afternoon asking to meet up with me.
'Hey, meet me at my place ASAP. It's about the game.'
When I got there, I met Veronica's uncle in the same position as yesterday, in front of the TV with a beer in his hand.
"Good afternoon sir."
He nodded without taking his eyes off the screen. At least this time he didn't give me a weird stare.
"We will be upstairs Uncle Kim," Veronica said then took me up to her room.
"So why did you want me here? Do you have anything?"
I couldn't tell her I was doing my research because I didn't know if I could trust her. I had taken a glimpse at her driving license when she was handing it to the policeman at the checkpoint. It read 'Veronica Badmus' and not 'Bello'. If she was hiding her real surname then there was something else to all this.
"Well, I have been thinking about what happened. What has been happening." She said sitting on the bed.
"Because of the game." I pointed out resting on the desk.
She shrugged it off.
"But if I was thinking, if Sylvester had died the exact way Margret said she would, we can't just sit wait until your guy what's his name again?"
"Raymond."
"Yeah, Raymond. We can't wait until he turns up dead."
My face went pale at the picture of her statement.
"So what do we do?"
"Well I looked upon the game and it is pretty normal, although there were cases about demons and games coming to life it's all fiction, and even if it were, it couldn't apply to this case."
She was only telling me things I already knew.
"So?"
"Be patient na, am driving somewhere." She pleaded. "Margret said she killed Sylvester or remembered doing it anyway."
I sighed.
"What's your point?"
"She said she did it but what if she didn't? She was sleeping up in her room in the night but woke up in the living room with blood all over her."
"So you're saying someone else did it?" I said with a tone of confusion.
"I'm not sure. But what if someone else was with us that night, and decided to turn our silly game into a horrific madness. it's the only hunch we have right now and I have a plan on how to catch the killer."
I was beginning to think Veronica was crazy.
"What the hell are you talking about? We were the only ones here that night. And why would someone what to kill the people we wanted dead and then frame us for it?"
"Well someone could have been here without us knowing, it's a big house. Also, the world is a pretty dark place and the sooner you understand that, the better it's going to be for you."
"Not here in Nigeria. And you better keep all this your crime novel logic to yourself."
I stopped. What if that was it? What if all these were just a sick way of Veronica engaging her fantasies.
"So which would you pick Huh? That someone else is behind this or that your best friend that you have known for over three years is a cold-blooded killer." She said staring at me.
I seemed to lose my tongue for a moment.
"I don't know okay," I said moving away from the desk and started pacing back and forth. "This wasn't what I expected when I started searching for fun and now someone is dead and it's only a matter of time before another body drops too. I don't know what to do..."
Veronica got up from her seat to calm me down.
"Okay breath... That's why we are here right, to think of a way to stop this before it happens."
I nodded.
"As I said before, mine is just a hunch. And since we have no major clue on what all these is yet, I'm suggesting we work with this for a while and figure out where it all leads."
"Okay, so what do you have in mind?"
Veronica smiled.
"We're going to use you as bait. But the others have to get involved in this too."
* * *
I still couldn't get through to Margret and the rest during the weekend so I figured we would get the chance to talk Monday. Joana got to me first.
"We need to talk." She said pulling me out of the class immediately after the assembly. She had dragged me out to the end of the corridor before she stopped.
"So spill it, what exactly happened that night?" She asked crossing her arms.
"What?"
"June didn't say anything when I asked her and she has been avoiding me ever since. And I know you were too over the weekend. You better start talking."
I sighed. I narrated everything to her about the game started and how Sylvester had died exactly the way Margret said she would kill him.
She gasped in shock.
"My God! But that would mean... Who did you say you wanted dead? And who did June mention too?"
My tongue froze. I wasn't going to be the one to tell Joana her sister fantasized about getting her killed.
Luckily, we both keep quiet as two students passed us.
"You know what, that doesn't matter right now." She said immediately after, "What were have to do is find a way to stop this from happening again... And am beginning to believe what everyone else is saying about Veronica."
"And what's that?"
I was starting to lose count of the names the school had given Veronica.
"That she is a witch."
I was shocked that Joana, as logical and factual as she could be about everything, was so quick to believe in magical theories.
I laughed.
"Really? That's what you are going with."
"What else do you want me to think? You are not starting to support her are you?" She gave a stony look.
I gulped.
"No, but am just saying, there should be a more logical explanation to what is going on."
"What is logical about any of this? She invited you to her house didn't she?"
"Yes."
"She wanted you guys to play a game right?"
"Yes, but--"
"Can't you see? This was all her plan to get you guys and add to her list of eaten souls or something. Babe, reason being." She said finally.
I wanted to reply but soon sighted our teacher coming towards us.
"Mr. Shittu is here, let's go back in."
During the class, my mind kept going over what Joana had said. It sounded bogus at first after reflecting on it for a while, it sounded even more concrete than what Veronica had told me on Saturday. What if she was a witch?
First of all, she was hiding her real identity from us. Also, this all started because of her. What if her hunch was part of her to keep us away from her before she could finish us off?
I cringed at the thought that I brought this all on myself and my friends. It had to stop.
Immediately Mr. Shittafter u left the class, I had dragged Joana out with me.
"Okay, I believe you. But what do we do now?"
"Uhm, I was thinking... We have to confront her. It's the only way she can get her to tell us about her plan."
"Confronting her? Won't she kill us at the spot if she finds out we are onto her?"
"No, I don't think she can do anything to us unless the other people are dead."
I reluctantly nodded to her logic.
"Okay, so when do we do it and how?"
"We don't have time to waste." She said and paused as if to gather her thoughts together. "We're on the free period right now. Go get Margret and June and meet me in the Chemistry Lab. I'll be there with Veronica."
I nodded and went back into the class, my eyes searching for June and Margret. They weren't in. I threw a glance at Veronica who was at her usual spot by the window, Joana was already approaching her.
I came out of the classroom and headed down to the right stairwell.
Walking down, I heard moaning sounds down below and I shook my head. Kunle was at it again.
I wanted to see the girl that was foolish enough to fall for his sly charms and to my surprise, I saw Margret.
"Margret, what the fuck?!"
They left each other immediately. Kunle smiled as he adjusted his uniform while Margie looked away in embarrassment.
Kunle started walking away and made a click sound with his tongue as he passed me.
I hissed.
"I'll call you Margret." He yelled at a distance away from me.
"Useless boy," I said glaring at him till his view faded then turned my attention to Margret.
"What's going on?" I asked placing my right hand on my hip.
She didn't reply, her head still bowed down.
"Can't you hear me?"
She still didn't say a word.
"No, you can't keep quiet. I mean, why would you make out Kunle? Kunle of all people! Because of a bad we--"
My choice of words seemed to spark up something in her.
"Because of a bad week?!" She yelled "You call last week a bad week? I fucking killed someone and you call my actions a result of a bad week?!"
I could feel the blood leave my face. Margret wasn't okay and instead of comforting my friend, I was out looking to save myself.
"Margret I-"
She scoffed.
"No, you don't get to judge me. Not after you and the girls stayed away."
"But I tried calling you."
"Yeah, on Sunday night, after you finally remembered me. After I tried called you that night that I couldn't sleep... I never did after that night you know." She said with her eyes in tears.
"I'm so sorry Maggy, I didn't know," I said moving closer.
"Well, you should have." She said sniffling.
I hugged her.
"I'm so sorry. I've been a horrible friend and I can't take it back. I should have done better- I'm going to do better. Please don't stay mad at me."
She remained silent but I knew my apology was working. Margret was the one with the big heart among us.
"I won't leave you until you say something. You know me." I said smiling.
She gave a short laugh.
"It's okay. I forgive you."
I released her for my arms.
"And I promise from now on to be by your side till we get through this, together."
"Together..." She replied wiping her face with her hands. "Now, why were you looking for me?"
"Oh, yeah," I said remembering why I came downstairs in the first place. "We have to go find June, Joana has a plan."
I was pretty much pissed that night. Or maybe with filled mixed feelings. But I knew I was pissed. I was now stuck in the middle of a situation I never wanted. Veronica was bad news and I had that feeling from the beginning but I never pictured having to deal with a dead body afterward. If only Grace had listened when I told her. I was mad at her for that. Thank God we weren't caught, I thought as June and I trekked to our house that night. We knew our parents would still be at the store by that time so we weren't bothered about having to lie about anything. Thank God we weren't caught. I didn't know about my friends but I already had my life planned ahead of me. After graduation, I'd leave the town to go study Medicine at UNN and after spending seven years there, go on to further my masters and get my Ph.D. and finally become a certified medical doctor. I couldn't screw it up when I hadn't even barely begun. How the hell did we even get here? The girls had barely said anything whe
I was scared. The game came to life, Margret killed her mother's boyfriend, Grace was next and after her, I would kill my sister.I was also terrified of what would happen when Joana finds out what I did. I knew she was going to ask me what happened that night at the party immediately we got home and I couldn't help but think she would hate me forever if I did. So I decided to start avoiding her any way I could. I texted Margret and Grace that night immediately Joana confronted me in the living room begging them not to tell my sister anything yet. Margret didn't reply but I was sure to count on her.I knew I couldn't avoid her forever but I did my best to stay away from them throughout the weekend. I hung around my mum and dad mostly, knowing that she couldn't bring up the topic with them around. On Monday, I had hurriedly left the house before her even though we always walked to school together. I also couldn't bear passing through Grandpa's farm. It only brought back the images and
Love. Lies. Pretense. They never saw me coming but I was watching all along. This is just the beginning. They're all pawns in my game. It's just a matter of time. I'll show them. I'll show her.__________________Grace stood in front of Veronica's door later that afternoon contemplating whether to knock or not. On her way over she kept beating herself that everything was all her fault. If only she had stayed away from the beginning, if only had kept her stupid fantasies to herself, everything would still be normal. Her friends were no longer speaking to her. They never said any word to each other throughout the school hours till they got home and the same could be said for Veronica who had left her at the lab after she released her without saying a word. She had decided to go over to Veronica's house when she realized she was going crazy over the thought of her having to kill Raymond. Time was running out and she had to do something regardless of who was with her or not.Veronica was t
_Shut up and dance with me!_The song from the TV screamed at June who sat almost lifeless on the sofa in the living room. She couldn't bring herself to go to school the next day. She had left the house earlier that morning pretending like she was heading for school but stayed out at her late grandfather's farm then sneaked back after she was sure everyone had left. Joanna wasn't speaking to her anymore. She didn't even budge when June tried to apologize later that night, or when she tried to bring up a conversation at all. It was like she became invisible to her. Never had she felt distant from her sister like she did now. At the moment she was trying to find solace in music. It has always been an escape for her. She had learned that shortly after her grandfather's death. When she was faced with any pain or grief, she would just let herself drown in the beats and rhythm. But it wasn't working as she had thought it would. Rather than taking away her sorrows, it intensified them. The
Morning prayers was a very huge part of the Chike's household's daily routine. Coming from a strong Catholic background, June and Joana's mother Gladys never allowed anyone to leave the house without them all praying together, no matter what time it was or how late they were going to be. Every morning they gathered in the living room where she occasionally led the prayers or sometimes appoint one of the twins to. This Friday was no different with her leading the prayers and shortly after, they all went back to their various routine, the girls preparing for school and the parents preparing for another day at the pharmacy. She got into the kitchen to prepare breakfast and by the time she came out, June was helping Joana dress her hair in a ponytail, both of them already in their uniform."I see you girls have resolved whatever issue you had before," Gladys said to them with a smile."Yes mom, I couldn't stay mad at her forever," Joana said looking up to her sister, they never felt closer
"Okay, Mrs?""Mrs. Ajayi," Maryam answered the officer. He had taken her to his desk due to the gravity of her words. He wanted to question her better. He wrote down her name on a paper."Alright, I'm Officer James, you can start from the beginning." He said gesturing with his pen.Maryam took in a deep breath, both her hands on her knees to keep them from shaking. She tried to weigh the situation. Is all of this worth it? What if Margret was right? What if Sylvester left her? She slowly let the breath out through her mouth in a whistle. If she was right or wrong, it was already too late for her to turn back now."I got home last week Friday to discover that Sylvester wasn't around--""Is that the man you're talking about?" Officer James asked."Yes.""And you said he's your boyfriend and the father of your child?""Yes."Officer James gave a slight nod. He seemed to write down something on his paper with each response."Continue.""So he wasn't around and when I asked my daughter she
Abike Badmus sat at the edge of the bed as she watched her husband Mike put on his agbada. As she watched, she shook her legs in such a way that showed that something bothered her, and her husband knew that too."If you have something to say you better talk now." He said staring at his reflection from the mirror as he fitted his cap to his head."I'm just wondering about the kind of man you are. It's like after all these years I don't know who you are anymore."Mike smiled then turned to face her. He pulls back the long yard cloth to prevent them from falling off his arms before he spoke."I'll tell you what kind of man I am. I am the kind that provides the roof you're living under, the kind that provides the soft wide deluxe bed you're sitting on. The kind that provides the elegant meals you eat, the vacation and shopping trips you have with your friends to Dubai. I made all of this happen." He said with satisfaction and gestured with his arms out wide.
School closed early as usual on Friday and the girls decided to head to Grace's home. There, they were going to get ready for Bright's party. Also, that was where they told everyone they would be that evening because they didn't want anyone in on what was going on. Margret, Joana, and June told their parents they running a school project at Grace's place. Veronica said the same to Hakim.Grace and Efe lived on the top floor of a one-story building. Their apartment was at the third door to the left. They walked up the stairs to the front of the apartment as Grace brought out her keys to open the door. Just as she struggled with the keys in the keyhole, Mama Favour, her neighbor came out from her apartment."Ah Grace, you don come back?"(1)Grace sighed, her eyes and hands still on the frustrating lock. Here she goes again stating the obvious, she thought. Mama Favour, like most housewives, was one of the few nosy neighbors in the compound, the only one living ups
A week has passed since Hakim's and the day every senior student at Ketu High finally came. Graduation. The four girls stayed in June's house that morning to do each other make-up and hair to look absolutely stunning for the event. Grace stared deeply at the small dressing mirror she sat in front of while June brushed her hair.Everything wasn't quite back to normal yet. They were still the talk of everyone in the town as well as in their school but they were not going to let it bring them down as they looked to put the event behind them and make the most out of the day."How is it?" June asked, admiring her masterpiece."I look like Barbie princess," Grace replied with a little sarcasm in her tone."You look beautiful, you mean." Joana said as she gazed at Grace, monetarily taking her eyes from Margret who she was helping with her make-up."Let me say what I want to say," She retorted then took a moment to look at herself again. Every other
The atmosphere outside was gloomy in the aftermath of Hakim's death despite the huge relief everyone had that the girls were still alive. Two ambulances had arrived minutes later in addition to the five police cars already on the scene. They all went to work immediately, gathering pieces of evidence and tying up loose ends as Hakim's body was taken out on a stretcher. Joana and Margret were by the other ambulance, receiving medical treatment. Grace and Veronica sat by the stairs leading to the front door of the house as Officer James interrogated them."So let me this straight," He said. "Hakim was behind all of this? He was the killer?""Yes." Grace answered as she and Veronica stared at each other. Veronica tried nibbling at her fingers to keep her composure but it wasn't working, her knees were shaking badly and Grace could feel it."Is that true, Veronica?" James asked.Grace's eyes were sharply fixed on hers without blinking, warning and pleadi
"Let her go or I'll shoot!" Hakim yelled."She's killing Grace shoot her!" Joana yelled."Stop it Uncle Kim," Cassandra said with her hand still pressing down Grace's neck. "We both know you won't shoot.""Please, I don't want to hurt you." Hakim said in tears. "Veronica, please."Suddenly, it seemed like Cassandra's mood changed, but Veronica was now awake."Kill me, please, I'm begging you.""You heard her, shoot.""No, d-don't." Grace said even as she choked. "We can help her... Put the gun down."Hakim slowly lowered his arm as he with Margret and Joana watched in anticipation of what Grace meant."V-Veron-ica... li-sten to me..." Grace said. "She's got nothing on you, it's your b-body... You can take back control.""I-I can't." Veronica replied in tears. Her hands were still strangling Grace, she couldn't stop herself. "She's stronger than me.""That's a lie and you know it... You're one of the stronge
Joana said what she said so that Cassandra would be unsettled and it worked. As Cassandra looked down at the road from the upstairs window, she began wondering if she had underestimated Grace. If she did, then everything may not go smoothly as she wanted it to go."She is spineless, they all are!" She reassured herself and placed her focus back on the road. Grace would be there any minute.Soon enough, Grace appeared and was standing in front of the building. She brought out her phone and dialed Cassandra."I'm outside now.""Yeah, I see you. Come inside.""No, how do I know that my friends are inside? How do I know you won't kill me the moment I step in?""Well you will just have to step in and find out, won't you?" Cassandra replied but Grace didn't seem to budge. "Tick tock Grace..." She said finally before Grace tools a deep breath and step came in."I'm inside now." She said."Keep going further, enter the room at the end
Due to what Officer James had told about the police car, Grace decided to alight earlier at a bus stop outside of the town while she sneaked back in on foot. It was much easier than she had thought as the two policemen had no idea what she was wearing and were busy waiting for a girl to step down from a bus whereas all she did was walk right past them. Standing from a distance, she watched as the two policemen searched the bus in confusion when they couldn't find any girl that matched the description that Officer James had given. It took a while and after they realized that they couldn't find Grace, they got back into their car and drove off.As she walked on, she tried to access the situation at hand. The first part done, she had evaded the police. The next thing now was how to stop Cassandra. Grace knew that meeting Cassandra without a plan was basically handing herself out on a silver platter. She also knew that going alone won't be to her advantage. She needed help,
Chapter 45 ~"So this is the place?" Margret said feeling a bit skeptical as she looked at the house Cassandra had brought her to. The whole environment looked so quiet and calm with a few uncompleted buildings around it. The house itself was a story building without any painting done on the exterior."I don't think I have ever been to this part of town before... I don't think people even live around here." She said looking around."Look, would you prefer we go to a place where we would easily be found?" Cassandra said with a glare."I'm just saying, this place is more or less like a construction site." Margret replied shaking off the red sand that got on her boots."That's what makes it even better, now can we go in or not?"Still feeling a bit reluctant, Margret decided to ask her a question that had been lingering on her mind since she came over."Why did you lie to us about your surname?""What?""We know that your n
Hakim Bello was still in the kitchen fixing the pipes when the police came to the house."Who's there?" He yelled, responding to the banging on the door."It's the police, please open the door."'The police? Why were they here?' He pondered as he walked to do the door."May I help you?" He said with a frown that formed lines on his thick forehead."We are looking for a Veronica Bello." The policeman answered. "Is she inside?""No, she hasn't been home since morning." Hakeem lied before realizing that he didn't even know why they were after her. "But why are you looking for her? Is she in any trouble?""Yes, who is she to you?" The other policeman spoke."She is my niece." Mr. Bello answered. "Now I ask again, is she in any trouble?""Not particularly sir, but we have reason to believe that a killer is targeting her and friends and we want to bring them in.""What the hell!" Hakeem explained. "Why should I believe
Wasting no more time, Officer James quickly dispatched as many other officers available to go search for Margret and Veronica. June had told him earlier that she had warned Margret before turning herself in and he was not likely to find her at her house. Still, James decided to head there first not just because it was the best place to look and trace Margret, but because he wanted to be the one to break the news of what was going on gently to her mother. He went with his partner, Officer Ade who was reading James the entire time they drove to the house."You don't know what you're going to say, do you?" Ade asked just as James was about to knock on the door. James held his hand back immediately Ade spoke, his only response being an awkward silence which seemed to put a naughty smile on Ade's face."You're crushing on the woman! Oh, I must see who she is today--"Embarrassed by his partner's words, James spoke back in a harsh whisper."Stop it! I am
"Veronica, wake up."Veronica opened her eyes slowly to see Hakim Bello's face staring down at her."Uncle Kim," Veronica said getting up, making Hakim move backward."Why aren't you in school?"Veronica placed the back of her hand in front of her mouth in an effort to cover it as she yawned. In no time she realized she was in the living room. But how did she get there? She had no idea. It was like there were blank gaps in her memory. Veronica had been experiencing it ever since she came to Ketu town, blacking out and waking up moments later with no idea of what she was doing before. But it was beginning to happen more frequently and also seemed like she was blacking out for longer hours."Eh, I'm tired I guess." She said as she stood up."Okay, but this is surprising... You have never slept on the couch before and you are mostly locked up in your room. Now you are here, napping on the couch and leaving your shoes on."Veronica looked
