"Are you certain nobody followed you?" Olivia's voice cut through the thick murky air of the abandoned warehouse as her heels clicked ominously in her approach to a group of men waiting under the dim light of a flickering light bulb.

The tallest of them was a man with a scar running down his cheek-forwarded. "We're professionals, lady. Nobody knows we're here."

Olivia's mouth shuddered into an upward curve; her eyes were quivering with terror. "Good. I want this done quietly, spotless of any errors. If you mess this up, it won't be my plans that are ruined-it'll be your lives that end."

"Calm down," another said gruffly, leaning idly against a steel pillar. "Just tell me what you want."

Olivia took a deep breath, steadying herself. She pulled a photograph from her purse and handed it to Scarface. “This is your target: Luca Francisco. Bernice’s son.”

The man studied the photo, his eyes narrowing. “The kid’s what—two, three years old? This is the kind of job you’re hiring us for?”

"Mummy will be back soon, right, Clara?" Mia's soft voice pierced the warm afternoon air as she pulled on Clara's skirt while they took a walk through the vivacious park."Yes, sweetie," Clara said with an encouraging smile. "Your mummy is just working on some stuff. She'll come back soon."In another second, Luca ran ahead, a squeal of laughter echoing through as he chased after a butterfly. "Can I show mummy the butterfly when she comes back?" he called back.Clara's heart pinched. "Of course, Luca. She'll love that."Noisy was the park: chatter of families, loud laughs of kids, and from time to time, the barking of a dog. Clara watched the twins run from the swings to the slides, trying to cap off the gnawing unease in her chest-a feeling she could hardly explain."Stay close, both of you!" she called, a little alarm creeping into her voice. The twins continued to play as if they hadn't a clue of her anxiety. Clara dug out her phone and checked once again for messages from either B

"I should never have left them," Bernice whispered, shuddering.Alexander turned to her from his chair on the private jet. She was white, with two red eyes from crying, and her fists were clenched tightly in her lap."Bernice, this is not your fault," Alexander said severely."How can you say that?" she returned, her voice shaking. "I left my babies behind, Alexander. I trusted-" Her voice broke, and she turned away from him, her gaze fixed on the endless black sky outside of the window.Alexander sighed and ran a hand through his hair. "We both trusted they'd be safe. Since we had eyes on Ethan and Olivia in Rome. No one could've predicted this."She turned to him, the wetness from her tears trickling down her face. "I should have known this! Something was feeling off, and I felt it! My instinct told me, and still, I didn't listen!"He leaned toward her, speaking low but insistently. "And now we're going to put things right. I promise you, Bernice, we'll find Luca and Mia will be saf

"Where are they?" Rafael's voice thundered across the large hall of his mansion as he paced up and down irritation mounting with each ticking second. Dark eyes blazed and his fists clenched hard at their sides.Ethan was standing casually, leaning against the doorframe, his arms across his chest; a smug smirk played on his lips. "Calm down, Uncle; it's not the end of the world. Yet."Rafael shot him a sharp glare. "Calm down? Bernice left without a word, and you want me to calm down? She's always running, Ethan! Always slipping through my fingers!”Ethan pushed off the wall and approached him with a calculated expression on his face. "Maybe she's not worth chasing after, Rafael. Maybe she's not who you think she is."Rafael stopped pacing and turned fully toward Ethan. "What are you trying to say?”Ethan shrugged with a feigned burden of nonchalance. "I'm just saying, maybe Bernice isn't worth your time. She left you once, right? Now she's doing it again. Why bother?”Rafael's jaw cla

"Who sent this?" Alexander's voice sliced through thick tension hanging in the air at Bernice's apartment. He was holding up his phone, its screen displaying a cryptic message: *Stop your investigation, or Luca will pay the price.*Bernice sat ghostly white on the couch, shaking hands. "I don't know," she whispered. "But they're watching us."Detective Marcus was leaning over the small dining table, his notepad opened. "Has either of you received anything like this in a while?” "No," Alexander returned firmly, his jaw clenching. "This is a first-the first direct threat.""And it's a clear one," Marcus returned calmly, seriously, "Whoever sent this knows your moves or else has inside information or at least is close enough to keep tabs on you.”Bernice's face fell onto her palms. "Luca… they have my son. And Mia is out there, alone. What if…"She was sobbing. In the next instant, Alexander was beside her, his soothing touch upon her shoulder. Rafael sat with his back to the window, staring into the glow of his laptop screen. The seriousness of the email in front of him-something to do with a comprehensive report about another act of sabotage against one of the key projects of the company made him sad. His eyes fogged, and the words disappeared into a blaze of mental pictures of Bernice: her laughs, her fiery arguments, how she used to challenge him.“Sir,” his assistant, interrupted gently from the doorway, “the board is waiting for your response on the proposed measures to counteract the sabotage.”Rafael waved her off impatiently. “Tell them I’ll review it later.”Laura hesitated. “They’ve been waiting for three days, sir. The situation is escalating—”“I said later!” Rafael barked, his voice sharp enough to make her flinch. She scampered off, and with a groan, Rafael leaned back in his chair to pinch the bridge of his nose. Just couldn't put himself through this anymore: not with Bernice out there, not with Alexander o

The silent office turned upside down when Rafael's fist cracked the glass surface of his desk and papers flew in every direction as his desk, already messy, became a battleground within the blink of an eye."Everything's falling apart," Rafael growled, his fists clenched. "And yet.all I can think about is Bernice."His door creaked open, and Gabriel stepped inside, his features an etching of concern and professional reserve."What?”"Rafael," Gabriel began, his voice smooth, almost, to keep himself in the present. "We need to talk about the company. The attempts at sabotage, the financial losses-they are still on the rise."Rafael raised his eyes; his gaze was sharp and icy. "I don't have the time for this now."Gabriel further closed in on him, firm in his voice: "Rafael, you have been doing this for days on end now, and the whole company is walking on their toes. If you yourself do not handle the crisis, we are going to lose so much more than business.""Then let it burn," Rafael ye

"Where could she be?" Bernice demanded tersely in the hush of Alexander's office tension and frustration edging her voice. She paced restlessly round the room, having her arms tightly crossed against her chest, as if holding herself together. Deep lines of worry engraved her face, making her look more fragile, even while her fierce determination showed no sign of faltering.Alexander leaned back in the chair beside the desk and regarded her silently. His features reflected his concern and weariness. "Bernice," he said quietly, "we're doing all that we can. Marcus has every possible lead covered and the reward will draw more information soon.""It's not enough!" she snapped, stopping abruptly and glaring at him. Glassy from the sleepless nights, angst over having her children missing was deeply ingrained in her tone. "My daughter has been missing for days, Alexander! My son. God knows what they're doing to Luca right now." The crack of her voice betrayed her, and she turned away, ref

"Are you sure this isn't some sick joke?" Bernice's voice finally cracked and her knuckles had turned white, clutching onto the phone a little tighter as her heart hammered against her ribs, threatening to shatter them. She was frozen in the middle of the study room, Alexander at her side. A soft firm voice responded, "Ma'am, I know that this is overwhelming, but the child brought into Saint Anne's fits the description of your missing daughter, Mia. You need to come now."Bernice's legs buckled where she stood, as Alexander grasped her elbow to steady her. "We're on our way," he said into the receiver, his tone clipped. He hung up without waiting for a response and turned toward Bernice. "Let's go.""But.." Her voice faltered and tears welled in her eyes. "What if it's not her, Alexander? What if it's some other child, and Mia's still out there?”"Then we keep looking," he cut in-a clear, authoritative voice, but soothing. "But if there's even the slightest possibility this might be

Bernice sat on the bed, staring with malice at the small clock on the nightstand. The hours crawled forward one heavy second after another. She had not slept. Her mind turned to tumble over and over what happened, what could happen. She stared and stared at Mia, her daughter still unconscious, the soft rise and fall of her chest the only sign that she was still alive, still with her.The room was dark, except for the dim light of the street lamps outside, and the quiet around her was choking her."What am I to do?" Bernice whispered into the darkness to nobody in particular. Her voice cracked the deeper the weight pressed down into her bones; she'd never felt so lonely, cast between two worlds. There was Alexander, she immediately remembered the promise he had made to stand by her side, fighting, and the firmness in the faith in her. Then there was Rafael: a force of nature who, by means, contacts, and resources, could go ahead, making even Alexander's aid so insignificant against

"I am not letting her leave here, Rafael." Bernice spoke in quivered silent strength, standing behind Mia's hospital bed. She ran her fingers smoothly through her daughter's disheveled hair. Days of unconsciousness had passed and with each minute in this clean and silent room, she felt further smothered by a sense of helplessness with the choices she made, and just not coming out of this crushing burden.Rafael stood framed in the doorway of the room, and he was as always commanding. Yet only a little while prior to this, he received updates about his legal team's handling of the situation. At all times, he kept him two steps ahead of all games. His lips pucker as he gazes at Bernice's nervy movements, eyes snapping over to their pale girl's face.“Mia needs the best care, Bernice," he said-too softly, but with the underlying authority not to be denied. "And that's in Rome. You know it as well as I do."She looked up at him, her heart pounding in her chest. The impossible decision:

Early morning light struggled through the heavy curtains, laying long shadows in the living room of Alexander's mansion. She sat at the front of the sofa, her fingers bunched into fists in her lap. The last couple of days had been like whirling dizzying moment after moment with tension and uncertainty. Now, in the quiet aftermath of Rafael's ultimatum, she felt lost-more so than ever before. The door opened, rattling the silence of that room as he came inside. Face emotionless, from those eyes, Bernice could tell, he was concerned. He gently closed the door behind him and sat calmly beside her."Bernice," he said hoarsely to her as he sat next to her. "We really need to talk."She nodded, her head not turning his way. There was nothing more to say. Nothing-but the crushing burden of what she had to try and hold together.“I won't let him take you and the kids. I am going to fight him, Bernice. I will fight him with all I have," Alexander stated now resolutely.Bernice's eyes flicker

The penthouse was quiet but for the lying phone on the coffee table that vibrated without cessation. Rafael cast his gaze at the screen with Gabriel's name across it. Very much against his will, he reached to pick up the receiver, seemingly awaiting news of a disaster."Rafael," came the anxious, strained tone of Gabriel. “Things are not looking good here.”Rafael settled in and braced himself, taking a long deep breath. "What's up?"“About all the losing financially, continual leaks with our projects, and some rat is inside to take us down. We reach the breaking point unless something's done and fast". Gabriel's voice cracked in the stress. "I am doing all I can. Still, we need you in Rome, we need you here, now.” Rafael ran a hand through his hair as his mind whirred on. It had spiraled out of his control at the company, but this? This wasn't what he was expecting. The weight weighed upon him now, yet he was not in a position to have a choice anymore."I'll be there as soon as I c

"Mama…”The weak voice sliced through the antiseptic silence of the hospital room. Bernice froze; her breath had seized up in her throat. Whipping toward the bed, she felt her heartbeat suddenly increase."Mama…"Again, Mia's voice whispered weakly, yet clearly.Bernice took wing to her daughter's bedside, her fingers quavering, gently laying them over Mia's white pale face. "Mia, my sweet child," she stammered her words, where the dampness of the wet flow of tears running from her eyes couldn't stop. "Mia, can you hear me now?"She blinked once: her wide eyes opened unfocused. "Mama…sleepy.”A sob of relief tore itself from Bernice's lips. She leaned forward and pressed a soft kiss on the child's forehead. "It's okay, baby. You can rest. Mama is here, and I'm not going anywhere."The door creaked open behind her, but she didn't turn around. All her attention lay wholly with Mia."Is she awake?" The word fell into the silence like an atom bomb dropped into it, spoken by Rafael in low,

Rafael called up a friend in Florence, he needed someone to talk to. "You have to stop blaming yourself, " Lucas said as he poured him two glasses of whiskey. "You have done all you could.Rafael stood by the window of his penthouse in Florence; a glowing city skyline lay outside, but he was far away in his thoughts while clenching his jaw showed no sign of relaxation. Events in the hospital were running in an infinite loop in his mind; that Mia was his daughter, fiery defense by Bernice, and Alexander smug interference haunted him.Rafael turned to him then, his face dark. "I haven't done everything. Not yet." He took the glass but didn't drink. "I've lost too much already. My children are out there-one unconscious in a hospital bed, the other missing. And I had no idea either of them even existed until now."Lucas blew out a slow breath, setting his glass on the table. "What is your plan?Rafael's eyes flash down. "To win them back. All of them."Lucas raises one eyebrow. "Even Be

"Well, here we are," Alexander said, breaking the taut silence as he lounged casually against the sterile white wall of the hospital corridor. His eyes darted between Rafael and Bernice. "It's about time we brought this circus to a close."Rafael's jaw tightened; his hands were deep inside the pockets of his fitted jacket. "I didn't come here for your commentary, Alexander.""No, you came here to confirm what you already know deep down," Alexander shot back, irritation lining his voice. "You're the twins' father, and knowing it is a whole different thing than being able to handle it."Bernice sat down in one of the waiting room chairs and shifted uncomfortably, her eyes on the floor. It hung heavy in the silence between them until she finally filled up her lungs to continue."Can't we do this somewhere else?" It was a soft tone yet unyielding. "This is a hospital. "Tell me we finally have something concrete," Liam growled; the strain in his voice was audible. Across the messy desk in Detective Marcus's office, dimmed light danced around the shadows of the wall, files and photos and maps everywhere, some reminding them of the time spent chasing shadows.Marcus pushed on his glasses, eyes sharp even with a face that seemed etched with exhaustion. "We do," he said, tugging a folder out and sliding it across the table. "Olivia has been in and out of several places around Rome, but this isn't some socialite thing; she isn't hitting dinners and charity events-these are low-profile, late-night trips, and Ethan has been spotted most times in the office and meeting business associates, they are rarely together.”Liam's eyes narrowed. "Ethan? Why am I not surprised? Always had an agenda of his own."Marcus nodded. "They are being cautious but not cautious enough. Our surveillance team followed Olivia to an industrial area on the outskirts, quiet, with
