Bernice grasped the wheel as if to hold it for dear life, the minute she pulled into Rafael's office parking lot. Today was supposed to be routine-quick, business-focused, in and out.

Yet, for some reason, that old tension that always hung in the air where Rafael was concerned seemed to ratchet a notch higher today. She steeled herself and exhaled in an attempt to keep her cool through whatever new turn this meeting might take.

She entered the office, heel to toe, clicking softly on shining marble floors, and prepared herself by silent rehearsals for yet another strained-for-civility professional encounter.

But as she went into Rafael's office, what greeted her was not the now-familiar figure behind the large desk but the large, empty room: the leather chairs there, the mahogany desk stood as it ought. But without Rafael's presence, the room sounded silently unread, unfinished.

Frowning around. Where was he? So engrossed in steeled words and curbed emotions, she was quite caught of

"Madam Bernice! Is that you?" Madam Alice's voice cut the silence as Bernice stepped into the grand foyer of Rafael's mansion, her eyes adjusting to the now so familiar warmth that seemed to clothe every corner of the room.It was memories and a sense of unease, besides the forced smile that etched its way onto her features. "It's been quite some time, isn't it, Madam Alice?" She made her voice casual and friendly, though inside her stomach was twisting into tight knots.“Its been so long!” Madam Alice reached out and grasped Bernice's hand in both-the touch warm with vestiges of times gone by. "I've missed you so much. This house hasn't been the same without you."Bernice nodded. She would not let the avalanche of memories overpower her. The soothing, haunting memories were welcoming, but not what brought her here. She let her breath out in a soft sigh, drew her hand away with deliberate slowness, reminding herself why she was here. "Madam Alice, is Rafael in his study?"Smile conden

Bernice watched Rafael sign the documents and let out a deep, deliberative breath as her fingers curled tightly over the signed documents, triumphant in a way she could never have imagined feeling. She let her weight drop into a non-conciliatory frame as she regarded Rafael with non-eyes. "Thank you for finally signing," she said, firm and steady, without a hint of all that stretched between them like a storm cloud ready to break. But Rafael's eyes never warmed; instead, he stared-with this peculiar determination, some sort of challenge-as if to defy her to demur against what he had said. "You really think this is that easy?" he growled low and hoarse, almost intimidating. "I signed the papers, yes, but we are still not done here.” "There's nothing left to talk about, she said firmly. "Our relationship is… done, Rafael. You said so yourself. You made sure of that a long time ago."He shook his head, lips pressed into a thin line. "Is that so? So coming here didn't do anything to you

"Do you always drink your coffee black, or are you trying to make a point?" Ethan teased as he leaned back into his chair and nodded toward Alexander's still-full cup.Alexander quirked a smile, and for a moment, a spark of amusement danced in his eyes before he replied, "Let's just say that it is an acquired taste-like working with Rafael."Ethan chuckled low and soothingly, breaking the tension in the air of what was, for all intents and purposes, a sterile meeting room. "Well, you've already got that part figured out. Dealing with Rafael is definitely not for the faint of heart."Alexander raised his cup in a mock toast. "To survival, then.”"To survival," Ethan finally said, smiling, clinking his water bottle against Alexander's cup. They were at that place in time where the light teasing between them, which had been going on for weeks, had almost attained a point of normality. Business dominated their meetings, but somehow, they would always manage to discuss sport, holidays, or

"You've noticed it too, haven't you?" Alexander's voice was placid but the tautness of his gaze betrayed his unease.Bernice looked up from the stack of papers she had been faking to read in the lounge of Rafael's company. "Noticed what?" she asked, but the sharpness told he surely knew exactly what Alexander meant.Alexander let loose a deep sigh and leaned back into the doorframe. "It's the black SUV across the street every morning, or some guy in the blue jacket showing up to the coffee shop, always with a newspaper but never turning the pages."Bernice stiffened. She went to the window and peered on to the morning street. "You are paranoid," she replied. the catch just a little in her voice.“Am I?" Alexander crossed the room and sat opposite her. Smoothing his voice, he weighed it as he said, "Bernice, this is no coincidence. We are being watched."Bernice laid the papers down, her hands shaking very slightly. "You're saying we bait them?" Bernice's voice was a sharp whisper as she leaned across the table toward Alexander."It's the only way to flush them out," Alexander said, his tone even but firm. He turned to Liam, seated beside him, arms across his chest in deep contemplation. "What do you think, Liam?"Liam's eyebrow arched, his keen eyes darting from one to another. "It's a risk," he said finally. "It's also effective, if we do it right."Bernice frowned, her fingers tapping on the table. "And if we don't?""They'll know we're onto them," Liam said sharply. "Which will make them more cautious. But right now they're sloppy-they think you haven't noticed them. That's our advantage.:Sloppy?" Bernice huffed. "They've been following us for days and we didn't even catch onto them until now.""That's because they've been subtle," Liam replied, correcting her. "But subtle isn't the same thing as perfect. Everyone screws up and these fellows are no different."Alexander nodded. "Then we mak

"Don't lose them," Alexander growled low, his hands laid on the headboard of the car. "I am trying," Liam returned cheerfully, his eyes riveted to the black sedan ahead of them. It danced through the late evening traffic with quick grace, its movements casual but calculated."They are trained to handle this kind of situation," Bernice said briefly. "They see us as soon as we get a little too close."Alexander threw a quick glance in her direction, his jaw clenching. "That is why we keep our distance. If we lose them now, this will be all for nothing.""Relax," Liam shot back, more nasty than anything. "I have done this before."Alexander lifted an eyebrow up. "Oh, have you?""No," she said dryly. "But I have seen it in movies. How hard can it be?”Alexander couldn't help but bark a short, mirthless laugh. "Great. We're into Hollywood logic now."********Down a quieter street their car turned, the bright blinking lights of the city giving way to the soft glow of residential buildin

"How can you be so blind, Ethan, or are you just stupid?" Olivia spat. She had been pacing up and down the length of their ostentatious penthouse living room. Her heels, with that sharp echo against the polished marble floor, belted out a keenness to match that in her voice.Ethan leaned back in the leather armchair, his face a mask of annoyance mixed with weariness. "Calm down, Olivia. You are overreacting.""Overreacting?" She whirled back in her pace, flashing her eyes. "You saw how Alexander and Bernice were acting at that café. They did it on purpose. They're up to no good.”Ethan huffed out an impatient sigh and ran a hand through his perfectly combed hair. "And just what, do you think they know? That we've been having them watched? It's not illegal to be cautious.” Olivia shot him a could-kill look. "It's not just the surveillance, Ethan. They are in Rome for a reason, and I'm telling you, it's not business."Here we go again," Ethan growled, rising. "You're spinning theories

"You're avoiding Mr Fernandez, Bernice."Gabriel thundered in the large office as he handed her the heap of unsigned papers. Bernice sat at her desk, barely looking up, her pen tapping on a piece of paper which she hadn't written on in the last ten minutes."I am not avoiding anybody," she returned composedly, "I'm only trying to sort things out effectively."An eyebrow arched. "Effectively? Rafael's refusal to sign those says otherwise."Bernice let out a sharp exhalation; frustration bubbled just beneath the surface of her cool veneer as she looked down at the papers Gabriel set before her, all marked with glaring red tabs for signatures Rafael had withheld on purpose."He knows these are critical," she muttered mostly to herself.Gabriel nodded knowingly. "Which is precisely why he's stalling. He wants to see you, Bernice.”"I don't have time to play his games," she said shortly, though even within her own mind the words tumbling forth from her lips sounded a great deal more akin t

Bernice sat on the bed, staring with malice at the small clock on the nightstand. The hours crawled forward one heavy second after another. She had not slept. Her mind turned to tumble over and over what happened, what could happen. She stared and stared at Mia, her daughter still unconscious, the soft rise and fall of her chest the only sign that she was still alive, still with her.The room was dark, except for the dim light of the street lamps outside, and the quiet around her was choking her."What am I to do?" Bernice whispered into the darkness to nobody in particular. Her voice cracked the deeper the weight pressed down into her bones; she'd never felt so lonely, cast between two worlds. There was Alexander, she immediately remembered the promise he had made to stand by her side, fighting, and the firmness in the faith in her. Then there was Rafael: a force of nature who, by means, contacts, and resources, could go ahead, making even Alexander's aid so insignificant against

"I am not letting her leave here, Rafael." Bernice spoke in quivered silent strength, standing behind Mia's hospital bed. She ran her fingers smoothly through her daughter's disheveled hair. Days of unconsciousness had passed and with each minute in this clean and silent room, she felt further smothered by a sense of helplessness with the choices she made, and just not coming out of this crushing burden.Rafael stood framed in the doorway of the room, and he was as always commanding. Yet only a little while prior to this, he received updates about his legal team's handling of the situation. At all times, he kept him two steps ahead of all games. His lips pucker as he gazes at Bernice's nervy movements, eyes snapping over to their pale girl's face.“Mia needs the best care, Bernice," he said-too softly, but with the underlying authority not to be denied. "And that's in Rome. You know it as well as I do."She looked up at him, her heart pounding in her chest. The impossible decision:

Early morning light struggled through the heavy curtains, laying long shadows in the living room of Alexander's mansion. She sat at the front of the sofa, her fingers bunched into fists in her lap. The last couple of days had been like whirling dizzying moment after moment with tension and uncertainty. Now, in the quiet aftermath of Rafael's ultimatum, she felt lost-more so than ever before. The door opened, rattling the silence of that room as he came inside. Face emotionless, from those eyes, Bernice could tell, he was concerned. He gently closed the door behind him and sat calmly beside her."Bernice," he said hoarsely to her as he sat next to her. "We really need to talk."She nodded, her head not turning his way. There was nothing more to say. Nothing-but the crushing burden of what she had to try and hold together.“I won't let him take you and the kids. I am going to fight him, Bernice. I will fight him with all I have," Alexander stated now resolutely.Bernice's eyes flicker

The penthouse was quiet but for the lying phone on the coffee table that vibrated without cessation. Rafael cast his gaze at the screen with Gabriel's name across it. Very much against his will, he reached to pick up the receiver, seemingly awaiting news of a disaster."Rafael," came the anxious, strained tone of Gabriel. “Things are not looking good here.”Rafael settled in and braced himself, taking a long deep breath. "What's up?"“About all the losing financially, continual leaks with our projects, and some rat is inside to take us down. We reach the breaking point unless something's done and fast". Gabriel's voice cracked in the stress. "I am doing all I can. Still, we need you in Rome, we need you here, now.” Rafael ran a hand through his hair as his mind whirred on. It had spiraled out of his control at the company, but this? This wasn't what he was expecting. The weight weighed upon him now, yet he was not in a position to have a choice anymore."I'll be there as soon as I c

"Mama…”The weak voice sliced through the antiseptic silence of the hospital room. Bernice froze; her breath had seized up in her throat. Whipping toward the bed, she felt her heartbeat suddenly increase."Mama…"Again, Mia's voice whispered weakly, yet clearly.Bernice took wing to her daughter's bedside, her fingers quavering, gently laying them over Mia's white pale face. "Mia, my sweet child," she stammered her words, where the dampness of the wet flow of tears running from her eyes couldn't stop. "Mia, can you hear me now?"She blinked once: her wide eyes opened unfocused. "Mama…sleepy.”A sob of relief tore itself from Bernice's lips. She leaned forward and pressed a soft kiss on the child's forehead. "It's okay, baby. You can rest. Mama is here, and I'm not going anywhere."The door creaked open behind her, but she didn't turn around. All her attention lay wholly with Mia."Is she awake?" The word fell into the silence like an atom bomb dropped into it, spoken by Rafael in low,

Rafael called up a friend in Florence, he needed someone to talk to. "You have to stop blaming yourself, " Lucas said as he poured him two glasses of whiskey. "You have done all you could.Rafael stood by the window of his penthouse in Florence; a glowing city skyline lay outside, but he was far away in his thoughts while clenching his jaw showed no sign of relaxation. Events in the hospital were running in an infinite loop in his mind; that Mia was his daughter, fiery defense by Bernice, and Alexander smug interference haunted him.Rafael turned to him then, his face dark. "I haven't done everything. Not yet." He took the glass but didn't drink. "I've lost too much already. My children are out there-one unconscious in a hospital bed, the other missing. And I had no idea either of them even existed until now."Lucas blew out a slow breath, setting his glass on the table. "What is your plan?Rafael's eyes flash down. "To win them back. All of them."Lucas raises one eyebrow. "Even Be

"Well, here we are," Alexander said, breaking the taut silence as he lounged casually against the sterile white wall of the hospital corridor. His eyes darted between Rafael and Bernice. "It's about time we brought this circus to a close."Rafael's jaw tightened; his hands were deep inside the pockets of his fitted jacket. "I didn't come here for your commentary, Alexander.""No, you came here to confirm what you already know deep down," Alexander shot back, irritation lining his voice. "You're the twins' father, and knowing it is a whole different thing than being able to handle it."Bernice sat down in one of the waiting room chairs and shifted uncomfortably, her eyes on the floor. It hung heavy in the silence between them until she finally filled up her lungs to continue."Can't we do this somewhere else?" It was a soft tone yet unyielding. "This is a hospital. "Tell me we finally have something concrete," Liam growled; the strain in his voice was audible. Across the messy desk in Detective Marcus's office, dimmed light danced around the shadows of the wall, files and photos and maps everywhere, some reminding them of the time spent chasing shadows.Marcus pushed on his glasses, eyes sharp even with a face that seemed etched with exhaustion. "We do," he said, tugging a folder out and sliding it across the table. "Olivia has been in and out of several places around Rome, but this isn't some socialite thing; she isn't hitting dinners and charity events-these are low-profile, late-night trips, and Ethan has been spotted most times in the office and meeting business associates, they are rarely together.”Liam's eyes narrowed. "Ethan? Why am I not surprised? Always had an agenda of his own."Marcus nodded. "They are being cautious but not cautious enough. Our surveillance team followed Olivia to an industrial area on the outskirts, quiet, with
