-Katherine-

“Katherine!” my mother scolded.

“It’s not a lie,” I replied. “Acan knows the Dark Ones should not be messed with, but he would rather let his brother die than stop this.”

“Katherine, be careful!” my father warned.

“No, I know, but neither of you can deny that this war is pointless,” I told them.

They exchanged glances. I could tell they didn’t agree with me, but because Acan was king, they had to provide soldiers and support.

“War is never pretty,” my father said.

“I know. I just don’t understand why Darius had to go.”

My parents exchanged another glance, and then my mother clasped her hands together, lightening the mood and changing the subject.

“We’ve prepared a party in two days to welcome you home,” she announced.

“Mother,” I sighed, shaking my head. “Does everyone need to see how my dresses don’t fit like they used to?”

That made them laugh, and I couldn’t help but smile.

“Come now, you glow!” my mother said. “Everyone will be so happy to see how you’re growing.”

-Katherine-My mother and I visited the town the next day. I felt like my body had been thrown against a wall. Using my powers for the first time had taken its toll. My mother also wanted to stop by an orphanage. She loved doing charity work, and since she only had me, she had practically adopted all the small children in her heart. It was a wonderful sight to see all the kids running to her. The orphanage in Miracle was smaller and in much better condition than others I had seen.I hated to think of the places where other children lived, but I was no longer queen. That was Silver’s responsibility—to ensure the building was well cared for and the children supported.“Katherine, come!” my mother called. Her ladies were surrounding the children as well. They were all kind-hearted women. I walked closer, joining the group as we found places to sit. My mother picked up a book to read to the children. They listened intently, and after the reading, we made sure to distribute food, toys, and

-Katherine-My parents had prepared a truly grand ball, creating a wonderful evening filled with lords and ladies. The streets were alive with celebration, and the lights sparkled brighter than ever throughout the entire city. I hadn’t expected such a warm welcome, but I was thrilled to be embraced with so much love. As I entered the ballroom, the crowd turned to me, clapping and greeting me as I made my way to my parents.I wore a dark green dress adorned with golden spirals, complemented by a small crown atop my head. My long, wavy red hair cascaded down my back. This time, I felt good entering the ballroom. I felt welcomed.I found my parents in the crowd. Even after all these years, they were madly in love. My father always kept a protective arm around my mother, holding her close. They laughed and chatted with old friends, and I took a moment to watch them before I approached. Their faces lit up with happiness as I drew near, and they introduced me to the nobles they were speaking

-Darius-I stared at the letter in front of me, unsure of what to write. I wanted to tell Katherine everything I was doing—explain my plans and how I had managed to turn things around—but it wasn’t that simple. I feared that if I wrote it all down, I would reveal myself.I was getting tired, though. I could feel my strength waning. Changing time was not easy, but I made sure we rested between battles. I looked down at the hand holding the pen and noticed the dark veins spreading across my skin. I was changing in many ways, displaying signs of what I was becoming, and I was unsure how I would be received at home. The veins crept up my arms before stopping, and I knew they would never disappear. I had done this because I needed power. I needed to be strong enough to fight against the leader. But I was also growing scared of myself. Perhaps that was why I hesitated to write to Katherine. I was afraid of what I should tell her. Would she still see me as the same person if she knew how I hu

-Katherine-While it had grown colder, it was always warm in the capital. We could still wear flowing dresses if we wanted, but the sun didn’t stay up as long as usual. I was sitting in my room, reading a book and lounging around when a servant knocked on my door. I told them to enter, and they informed me that Silver was looking for me, requesting that I accompany her and her ladies into town. I didn’t want to go, but she insisted, and I knew I couldn’t say no to the queen. So, I got dressed for an outing and left my room. When I reached the castle entrance, I found the other ladies waiting, smiling and laughing. However, I noticed something odd: it was just them—hardly any guards. Usually, Silver had more than five with her, but this time only two stood ready. Was this a mistake, or were we just taking a short walk through town? I was unsure, but Silver distracted me with her smile as I approached. The other ladies seemed excited too, but I felt uneasy. It all felt so fake.“Ah, Kath

-Katherine-The mob was closing in on us, so I took a quick turn, and we slipped down a narrow alley. Silver clung to me, but we managed to hide in the shadows as the mob walked right past us. We both breathed heavily. The sun was almost down, and we had to get away from the street before the crowd found us and overwhelmed us. After all, I was Silver’s “family”. What if they blamed me too?Silver was shivering and on the verge of tears, but I quickly led us deeper into the alley away from the mob. Unfortunately, a few people appeared at the end, noticing us and calling out. We began to back away, trying to hurry in the opposite direction, but then I felt a shove and stumbled forward. I turned to see Silver smiling.“What the hell are you doing?” I asked, bewildered. She held up the bracelet, then let it drop to the ground. “I’m paying you back for my child!” she snapped before running off.I turned to face the angry mob approaching. I tried to run in the direction that Silver and I had

-Darius-I crumpled the letter in my hand, consumed by rage. I had never felt this way before. My emotions were usually so dulled. But I hadn’t anticipated this.In the middle of the night, I slipped away from the camp, heading toward the forest but not venturing inside. The war was nearly won. I had noticed how the enemy’s numbers had dwindled, and I hoped that meant their leader was ready to talk, ready to strike a deal. I waited by my horse, standing in the dark, until finally, he began to emerge from the shadows without coming too close.“Yes?” he asked, sounding angrier than the last time we spoke.“My wife was almost brutally raped by an angry mob instigated by my brother and his queen,” I explained.“I see… And why should I care?” he replied coolly.“Strike a deal with me. Let me go home,” I demanded. “This place will forever be yours. You will never see me again.”“Oh, are you a traitor now?” he scoffed.“If my brother wants to fight his battle, then he shouldn’t have risked my

-Darius-As expected, many began complaining and asking what was going on. Why were we retreating now that we finally had the Dark Ones where we wanted them? But I spoke honestly to them about what had been done to my wife. Some defended Acan, claiming he couldn’t have known what would happen, but I explained that his wife had left with Katherine, fully aware of the potential consequences. The news shocked many, and I made it clear: if the king couldn’t show me loyalty by protecting my wife, then I wouldn’t fight his battle.“I’m the only real traitor here. Everyone else just followed orders,” I yelled. “You can return without fear of consequence.”I could tell that made them feel more at ease, and soon they began packing up. The generals, however, approached me.“You can’t do this!” one of them protested.“No? Do you want to take over the leadership?” I asked, eyeing the fat general who was grinning.“I will,” he replied confidently. “Once the king hears you’ve turned your back on the

-Katherine-Calling myself queen was a bit of a stretch. My father and mother were still very much alive and living well, and I knew it would be a while before I sat on that throne. But I relished the look on Silver’s face. It was priceless. Her face flushed red, her eyes sparkling with that familiar fire, but my guards remained close, making it clear that if she tried anything, she would end up hurt.“You are not queen!” she spat.“I didn’t say I was queen,” I taunted. “I said I was a queen.”“That doesn’t give you any power here!” she snapped.“I think it does, because I’m married to Darius, the man who will defeat the Dark Ones. Has Acan ever won a battle against them?” I mocked.Silver’s fury only intensified as I pointed out Acan’s weaknesses.“You can’t just act like you rule here!” she snapped.“Do I act like I rule?” I asked, glancing around to see if anyone would answer, but no one did. “I don’t rule. I’m just planning a party.”“In my home!”“Silver, it’s my home too. I marri

  • His Unbeloved Queen   Epilogue

-Darius-My beautiful queen came over to me, kissing me before sitting down beside me. Years had passed since we ascended the thrones and began ruling together, although my wife did most of the governing. The way she spoke to the people and connected with them was something I could never replicate. But over time, they had grown less afraid of me and more accepting. Therefore, we often ventured into the city together, walking among the people and ensuring they saw us. We brought all the kids with us as well, but they were nearly filling the entire table at our meals now. Silver’s and Acan’s boys had initially been sad about their parents, but we never fully disclosed our involvement in their fate, only that their parents had died due to the mob. They moved on quickly, and when the line of succession changed, I noticed a sense of relief in the eldest boy. He didn’t want to be king, and now he could enjoy his life as a prince.Katherine and I loved them as if they were our own sons, provi

Darius and I had traveled quite a distance with our prisoners. We knew exactly who to hand them over to, and now we stood in the middle of the night with a single torch, a few guards, and Silver and Acan before us, tied up and shivering uncontrollably. Their clothes were filthy, their bodies dirty after days spent in the dungeon. We had waited until things calmed down a bit before bringing them here, and now we were simply biding our time.“It’s been a while, prince,” the leader of the Dark Ones said as he emerged from the forest. He seemed to be alone, but I sensed he was not. His dark eyes focused on me, filled with joy.“I finally meet her,” he said.I smiled at him, and he returned the gesture before his eyes shifted to the king and queen before us, tied up and gagged.“Oh, a present. I didn’t bring anything for you,” he mocked.“Better work quickly,” Darius informed him. “We’ve given them something calming so they can’t use their powers, but it won’t be long.”“Don’t worry. We’ll

-Katherine-I gathered some guards and went upstairs to locate Silver’s room. Two guards stood there, blocking the door, but with four of my own, I confidently told them to move aside. They exchanged a glance and stepped back, clearly not wanting to engage in a fight with me. I smiled, feeling a surge of satisfaction, and pushed the door open.Inside, I heard Silver’s voice, “Acan?”I saw her standing up from the bed, a cup of wine in her hand, with blood smeared across her face. It was clear she had taken some hits.“Katherine…” she whispered.“Hello, Silver.”“W-Why are you here? What happened? Are they gone?” she asked.“No, there are still some left. I’m here to remove the wrong rulers and replace them with the right ones.”“The right… ones?” Silver began piecing it together, then let out a hollow laugh. “You…”“Yes.”“All this time?” she inquired.“That’s what you get for cheating with my husband and killing me,” I snapped.“What?” she inquired, looking confused. “I never touched

-Darius-I looked at my beautiful wife, dressed in our colors, her hair elegantly styled and adorned with a silver crown. She looked incredible, and all I wanted was to forget the party and enjoy her company alone. But I knew tonight was special. So instead, I settled for watching her from afar, taking in the wonderful woman before me.Katherine noticed me in the mirror and smiled. “How are you feeling?” she asked me.“Me? You’re the one who’s pregnant,” I replied with a chuckle. She smiled and nodded, then turned to face me, and I could feel my heart racing. It always did with her, swelling far beyond its normal size. I walked over to her and wrapped my arms around her.She looked up at me, her arms encircling my neck. “Yes, but this is a big night.”“It is,” I agreed.“So much will happen. Henry is protected, right?”“He is,” I assured her.“Good, because our entire world will soon change,” she whispered.“I know.”“So how are you feeling?”“Nervous, but determined. If the mob fails,

-Katherine-The next morning, I knew I had to do something I really didn’t want to do, but sometimes we had to sacrifice a little dignity to get what we wanted. I anticipated finding Silver with her ladies, so I headed to the room where they were drinking, eating, and laughing early in the morning. However, as soon as I entered, the room fell silent, and Silver glared at me as I approached. I plastered on a fake smile and walked closer, undeterred by their predatory gazes. I stopped in front of them and bowed my head slightly to show some respect, even though I felt none.“Morning,” I greeted. They didn’t respond, and I understood why.“Can we help you?” Silver spat.“Actually, I wanted to ask you a question,” I admitted, noticing her interest as I feigned vulnerability.“Oh?” she said, sipping her wine.“Well, Acan said I could throw that party, as you remember,” I reminded her.“Yes?”“But as I began planning, I became uncertain about a few things.”“Not surprising. It’s not that eas

-Katherine-Later, Darius and I retreated to our room after spending some time with Acan. I was already in bed when he joined me, pulling me close and kissing the top of my head.“I was a bit worried about being away from you today. I saw you went to the city. How did it go?” he asked.“Perfect.”“Perfect?” He raised an eyebrow.“You have no idea how angry the people are, Darius. They want Acan gone. I can feel it. They just need an opening, a chance, and I’m trying to find one,” I informed him.“Any ideas?”“No, what about you?”We both thought for a long moment as Darius ran his fingers along my arm, caressing me and making me feel calmer.“It was hard,” I finally admitted when neither of us had come up with a plan.“What was?” he inquired.“Listening to all that pain they were experiencing from not having enough money. I can’t believe Acan has been pushing them this hard or hurting them as much as he has. It’s just awful.”“Yes, I noticed how they glared at him as we rode through th

-Katherine-Many people were angry with Acan and Silver. I had brought guards with me to the city, but I spent the day listening to their complaints. I wanted them to feel that they had someone to confide in about their struggles.“We can barely scrape by,” a woman told me, clutching a basket. She looked exhausted and a bit too thin. “After the taxes were raised, all my money went to feeding my kids, and I have nothing left. My husband is dead, so we survive on what I earn washing other people’s clothes.”I knew she didn’t earn much from that work. She lived in a poorer part of the city, and those in higher positions would likely view her as “too dirty” to associate with. So I found a small bag of coins that could sustain her family for weeks. When I offered it, her eyes widened in disbelief.“Take it,” I urged gently. She glanced around to ensure no one noticed her receiving extra money. When she took the bag, she thanked me repeatedly for my kindness.“Your king and queen aren’t taki

-Darius-As Acan and I continued to talk, I noticed that the longer we spoke and the more he drank, the more his guard began to drop. He was slowly letting me back in, and I tried to hide the wicked smile that tugged at my lips.Eventually, though, he grew too tired and announced that he was going to rest but that we would be riding together tomorrow. I told him I couldn’t wait, even though the idea didn’t thrill me at all. Then I finished my drink and walked back to my room, where I found my wife sleeping peacefully. I briefly checked on Henry, who was heavily guarded but also fast asleep. Then I returned to our room, undressed, and joined Katherine in bed. She stirred slightly, moving closer to me before falling back asleep. I held her close and kissed the top of her head, savoring the moment. It reminded me of when we first arrived here. I remembered how we had gotten lost in each other, and the next morning, we realized what had happened—we had become a younger version of ourselves
