-Katherine-

It was an awkward meeting with Silver the next day. Not just because I knew her husband was sending my husband to his death but also because of how I had acted the day before. Now I needed to make things right and make Silver like me so she wouldn’t come after me. Darius was right. No matter how much I hated it, I had to play my cards right, or it might come back and bite me in the ass. So, I went to find Silver and her ladies, who were all having a great time in one of the queen’s rooms. They turned quiet as I entered and didn’t seem to even want to look at me. I sighed, feeling like we were all children just acting awful with each other. It felt ridiculous, but I had to swallow my pride and go talk to her. So I walked over there, and Silver, of course, wasn’t looking at me.

"Morning," I said.

No one answered me, but that was okay. I wished I didn’t even have to say anything. I sat down among the many pillows facing Silver, who was still not looking at me.

-Darius- I was meeting with my brother again. He had laid out an entire map of where the Dark Ones were hiding. It was a darker side of Adorna, where the sun never seemed to be able to light it up. They enjoyed that darkness and thrived in it, but striking them there would be a fatal mistake, it would only ensure that we would lose the battle. If I was going to be the one fighting them, then I was going to be the one who decided how this was going to happen. "It won’t work," I told my brother. "Of course it will. Strike them hard and fast." "Look at this, Acan," I said, sweeping my hand over the dark side of Adoran. "Does this look like a small landscape to you? Or a dark place that stretches for miles. We do not know where they are hiding. We do not know what tricks they might have up their sleeve. Remember who it is you’re sending out there." I looked at my brother pleadingly, and he seemed to back off a little, leaning back and looking at the whole attack from a new perspectiv

-Katherine- Darius’s plan was not a bad one. I understood where he was coming from and why he was suggesting it, but the thing was, I didn’t believe we could leave. Adorna needed a better king, and once my dad died, Darius would be king anyway. He would have an important seat to sit on no matter what. Why shouldn’t he be king of us all? Why shouldn’t he be the righteous one? He would definitely be a better one than Acan or his children could ever be. I would not allow Silver and Acan to scare me away anymore. I would fight for what was mine, and I would get my revenge, but how did I explain it to Darius? All he wanted was a quiet life for us and the family we were building. Would he ever agree to my plan, which I knew he would see as nothing but foolish? "Why don’t you think we should go? You hate it here. You always have." "But Darius, I am still a crown princess," I explained. "Even though I married you, I will become queen one day, and you will be my king. We can’t leave court n

-Katherine- I looked at myself in the mirror, smoothing down the dark, silver dress. I wore Darius and my colors. My red hair was up and braided, and I saw the onyx ring glistening in the lights from the candles. I looked down, turning it a little back and forth. It was so subtle, but I loved it. It was simple, yet it carried such big promises of eternal love. I thought I had eternal love with Acan. I thought the ring he was coming to be was going to be a strong foundation for us, but it wasn’t. We weren’t happy. I thought we were, but it was a lie. This ring on my finger wasn’t a lie. It was true, and I feared this time I was the one not appreciating the meaning of it. I didn’t want to scare Darius or let him down, but I knew we could never be together in a peaceful life with Acan and Silver out there. They were linked to us in a dark and dangerous way that we had to cut. We had to free ourselves so we would never get hurt by them again. I knew it wasn’t as simple as walking away. I

-Darius- This party was not really how I wanted to spend my last day here. Acan and I had been busy preparing, and I was leaving tomorrow. Early in the morning, I would leave with the army Acan had assembled, going to other estates to pick up more men, and then we would be moving to the dark side of Adorna. It was not going to be a pretty battle, and I had no idea if we were going to survive it or if this was going to be a years-long war. Some wars dragged on, with no one ever emerging as the winner. I really didn’t want to spend years away from Katherine. It meant missing out on a lot of great time with her but also missing out on watching our child grow, and I didn’t want to miss that. I didn’t want them to look at me like I was a stranger because I was returning from years of war. I wanted them to know who their father was and that he would never willingly leave their side. I wanted to show them the love that my father struggled to show me. I knew he loved my mother, and I knew he

-Katherine- I looked at Darius, confused, as he spoke of being afraid for me. I didn’t understand what that meant. He smiled at me a little, then reached out, bringing me closer to him. His warm hand rested on my hip, and I looked up into his dark eyes. He smiled at me, and it made my heart pick up the pace. He continued to gaze at me, not really speaking, and it confused me. "Are you okay?" "I am afraid to never hold you again," he whispered before moving his hand from my hip to my cheek. "I fear I will never touch you again. Never get to love you." "Darius… I’m still here," I told him. "I know you’re clever. I know you’re strong. But we have no idea what’s going to happen. The Dark Ones are powerful and tricky. They are just as clever despite their hunger for power. I don’t know if I will be coming back, and what then? Your plan relies on me as well, does it not?" I sighed, nodding a little. I couldn’t replace Acan, it had to be Darius, and it only showed me how patient I truly

-Katherine- The doors to our bedroom burst open as Darius and I hurried into it. We refused to let go of each other at any moment because it felt like the moment we did, we would slide away from each other. We would be unable to hold on, so it was now that we held on tighter than anything else. We pulled each other’s clothes off, moving further and further back until we fell down on the bed. Darius was too impatient to get my dress off and decided to cut it open. "Shit, Darius, the doors!" I gasped as he split open my dress. Darius looked behind himself, realizing the doors were still open. He hurried away from me, only wearing pants, then closed the doors, locked them, and then came to me again. I smiled, and he continued his work, splitting open my dress and getting it off me. "I did like that dress." "I will give you more," he promised before leaning over me and getting me higher on the bed. He kissed his way down my body, going to one of my breasts and sucking on it, making m

  • His Unbeloved Queen   Chapter 36

-Katherine- I skipped breakfast, lying in bed most of the morning, but I knew I couldn’t hide. I knew I couldn’t let people see how much it crushed me that Darius was gone and would not return to me. I had to seem strong. I had to prove this wouldn’t crush me. I would show them all the true power inside me, and they would know I was not one to mess with. I was someone to be feared because I was coming for those who had used me as a stepping stone. I was coming for those who were part of killing me. They should be afraid, because taking Darius from me had only made me angrier, and I felt something dark and powerful swirl inside me. I would show them no mercy. I would show them what a true queen could do. I jumped out of bed, summoning some servants, then got ready and left my room. I walked to where Silver and the rest were relaxing, chatting, and enjoying their time. I had to be smart after all, and that meant getting close to Silver while working behind her and Acan’s back. She woul

  • His Unbeloved Queen   Chapter 37

-Katherine- My visit with the orphanage had gone well. The children were all waving at me as I left, telling me to come back soon, and I planned to, but I had also promised Silver I would come back as soon as I could. So with the guard behind me, we began finding our way back to Silver. I found them at a big shop, where they were eating food and enjoying the luxury of it. I could see it was specially made with extra care. The queen didn’t eat food made by just anyone. She only ate the best, or it wouldn’t even come near her. When she saw me, she waved me closer, making me put on my fake smile before I walked over to her and joined them at the table they sat at. They were sitting under the sun, talking and eating. I was served some food as well, and I began enjoying the deliciousness of it. "So how did it go?" Silver asked. "Huh?" "With the orphans?" "Oh, just fine. They were happy about the gifts." "I do not know why you spend your money on them," she complained. No, of course

  • His Unbeloved Queen   Epilogue

-Darius- My beautiful queen came over to me, kissing me before sitting down beside me. Years had passed since we ascended the thrones, ruling together, though my wife did most of the ruling. The way she just spoke to the people and connected with them was something I could never do, but with time, they had grown less afraid of me and more accepting. They had begun coming to me instead of barely being able to look at me, and while they still treated me with caution, it wasn’t coldness I was treated with. They loved Katherine, though, and she loved to be there for the people. She loved to make them feel heard and cared for, and she made them smile and laugh. We often went into the city together, just walking among the people and making sure they saw us, and we took all the kids with us. The whole table was almost filled with them. Silver’s and Acan’s boys had been sad about their parents. We never truly told them what a part we played in it, but that their parents had died from the mob

  • His Unbeloved Queen   Chapter 94

-Katherine- Darius and I had travelled quite far with our prisoners. We knew exactly who to give them to, and now we stood in the middle of the night with a single torch, a few guards, and Silver and Acan in front of us, tied up and shivering like crazy. Their clothes and bodies were dirty after days of being in the dungeon. We waited until things calmed down a little before bringing them here, and now we were waiting. We had already begun helping the people get back on their feet and ordered the army home. Things would go back to normal, but we knew we had work in front of us. But first things first, we needed to pay a debt. "It’s been a while, prince," the Dark Ones’ leader said as he emerged from the forest. He seemed to be alone, but I had the feeling he wasn’t. His dark eyes went to me and seemed excited. "I finally meet her," he said. I smiled at him, and he smiled back, before his eyes went to the king and queen in front of us, tied up and gagged. "Oh, a present. I didn’t

  • His Unbeloved Queen   Chapter 93

-Katherine- There was no one Acan loved more than himself, and so I didn’t think he had taken Silver with him. He wouldn’t even think about his boys, only himself. I believed I knew where Silver had gone, and so I took some guards with me and went upstairs, locating her room. There stood two guards, blocking the door, but I had four with me, and when I told them to move, they took one look at the whole scene and stepped to the side, not wanting to get into a fight with me. I smiled, feeling good about it, and I stepped inside, hearing Silver’s voice. "Acan?" I saw her standing up from the bed, holding a cup of wine in her hand, and she had blood on her. I could see she had taken hits, and I believed the mob had gotten their hands on her, but then she had slipped away. She was waiting for her big hero, Acan, to come save her, but he wasn’t coming. There were only she and I here. She looked at me, scared, not understanding why I was standing there. "Katherine…" "Hello Silver." "W-

  • His Unbeloved Queen   Chapter 92

-Darius- I looked at my beautiful wife, who had gotten dressed in our colors as well. Her hair was up, and she wore a silver crown. She looked so amazing, all I wanted was to say screw the party and instead enjoy having her all to myself, but I knew tonight was special, and I couldn’t let myself get distracted, so I settled for watching her from afar, taking in the wonderful woman in front of me. Someone I was so lucky to have been granted. I had earned her love, while Acan had been given it and wasted it. I was proud of us both and how far we had come. No one could say we hadn’t fought to be together, and once Acan and Silver were gone, we could truly relax. We could enjoy our lives together and just be happy. Katherine noticed me in the mirror she stood in front of and smiled at me. We had been able to act much faster than we thought was possible. But that was how angry the people were. That was how desperate they were to get the king and queen removed and to let others take their

  • His Unbeloved Queen   Chapter 91

-Katherine- The next morning, I knew I had to do something I really didn’t want to do, but sometimes we just had to sacrifice a little of our dignity to get what we want. I knew Silver would be with her ladies, and so I went to find them in the room where they were drinking, eating, and laughing early in the morning. Once I entered, though, the room grew so quiet, and Silver was glaring at me as I neared them. I put on my fake smile and began walking closer and closer. They kept watching me like a predator would, but I didn’t pay any attention to that. I stopped in front of them and bowed my head a little to show a little respect, even though I had none for them. "Morning," I greeted. They didn’t answer me back, and I understood that. "Can we help you?" Silver spat. "Actually, I did want to ask you a question," I admitted, seeing her grow interested because I was now showing a little vulnerability. "Oh?" she asked, sipping her wine. "Well, Acan said I could throw that party, as

  • His Unbeloved Queen   Chapter 90

-Katherine- Darius and I retreated to the room later after spending some time with Acan. I was already in bed when he joined me, pulling me close and kissing me on top of the head. "I was a bit worried about being away from you today. I saw you went to the city. How did it go?" he asked. "Perfect." "Perfect?" he asked. "You have no idea how angry the people are, Darius. They want Acan gone. I can feel it. They just need an opening, an option, and I am trying to find one," I informed him. "Any ideas?" he asked. "No, you?" We both thought about it for a long time. I knew if I could create an opening for the people, a way inside to get to Acan and Silver, then they would do the rest. They would attack, and in the middle of that attack, we could strike. We could do what was necessary. It was all coming together, but we needed that small part, that moment that would be the perfect option to hurt them. When was that? When could we finally be free of Acan and Silver? Darius ran his fi

  • His Unbeloved Queen   Chapter 89

-Katherine- So many of the people were angry at Acan and Silver. I had taken guards with me before I went to the city, but I listened to complaints all day. I made sure they felt like they had someone they could come to to talk about their struggles. I listened to everything they had to say and began feeding them ideas about taking down Acan and Silver. I was never straightforward about it. I just left small breadcrumbs that I hoped would turn into more. I hoped they would follow my little trial and see the benefits of getting rid of Acan and Silver, and I did seem to awaken something in them. A need. A fire that glowed in their eyes and told me they were considering it. It felt so good to see, because it was like watching the dream house that Acan and Silver had built only for them to have to watch it crumble. It gave me a sick, satisfying feeling knowing their lives would be destroyed. It made me feel incredible to know I would be the cause of it as well. I would be the reason why

-Darius- Acan and I continued to talk, and I noticed that the longer we talked and the more he drank, the more his guards were coming down. He was slowly letting me in again, and I tried to hide the wicked smile on my lips. I needed him to be less guarded with me. I needed him to allow me to enter his heart again, if he even had one, and to want me close. Only then could I turn things around and turn people against him. Eventually, though, he grew too tired and told me he was going to rest now but that we would be riding together tomorrow. I told him I couldn’t wait, even though the idea did not thrill me at all. I couldn’t think of anything worse, but there was no way around it. I finished my drink, then walked back to my room, finding my wife sleeping. I left it shortly just to check on my son, who was heavily guarded but also sleeping. I walked back to my own room, undressing and finally joining her in bed. She woke up a little, moving closer to me, and then fell right back to sle
