Miranda’s foot was tapping against the tiled floor in anticipation, and she kept ringing her hands over and over again. The receptionist, a man who seemed far nicer that Cara, had asked her to wait in one of the student areas. It wasn’t far from the Professor’s offices. The space was filled with squishy chairs and beanbags, along with the normal computer desks. There was even a small kitchenet at the back wall where students could make a hot drink or microwave their food.
Thursday evening was student night in this city. That basically meant that all the bars and clubs were open with promotions for its binge drinking patrons. As a result, a lot these university scholars would be back at their halls swigging their pres. Miranda wondered if they even still called them pres anymore. The students that were in this space, were eyeing her with interest. She clearly wasn’t a student. You only had to compare their casua
It was going to take about an hour or so to get to the cottage, so Miranda had created a playlist for the journey there. She knew from Josh’s posters that he liked similar music to her. Not saying anything, she plugged her phone into the car stereo, and pressed play. The first song was ‘Black Dog’ by Led Zeppelin. As Robert Plant sang the first few words, Josh turned his head towards Miranda with interest.“I’d forgotten that you like the same ‘noise’ as me.”Miranda grinned and tapped her fingers in time to the music against the steering wheel.“Don’t worry, there’s plenty more coming up on this playlist. It wasn’t classic rock I grew up on though. I got interested in pop punk when I saw Green Day on Top of the Pops.”
The next morning, she opened her eyes to find Josh lying next to her in bed. He was on his back with his right arm stretched above him. Sunlight was beaming through gaps in the curtains, caressing parts of his face and exposed chest. She couldn’t resist gently pushing a stray piece of hair from his forehead. As it didn’t cause him to stir, she decided to get out of bed and go outside. She was desperate to see the view from the cottage in the light. Wrapping her dressing gown around her and pulling on some thick socks, she walked out to the hallway where they’d left their shoes. She knew she would need their welly boots for this weekend, it could get very muddy here this time of year. She pulled them on and shut the front door gently behind her.Considering it was the end of February, it was actually a beautiful day. It was cold, but it was a cloudless sky, so the sun was shining bri
On the way back from Chatsworth, Miranda pulled into a dirt track she’d spotted from the main road on the way here.As she turned off the ignition, Josh have her a sideways glance. “We’re not going dogging now are we?” he joked, but there was the edge of a serious tone in his question.Miranda patted his knee. “No don’t worry. That’s next weeks lesson.” She winked at him and he laughed. “Actually, I want to see how you get on with a bit of driving. Fancy it?”He took a look at the track ahead. “Er…yeah. Okay then.”They swapped seats and reattached their belts.“Now, can you remember how to start it?”Josh looked nervously around the contr
When Miranda woke up, the first thing she felt was a sore head and dry mouth. She instantly knew she’d had too much wine the night before. Gingerly opening her eyes, the image of Josh lying next to her came into focus. He was watching her.“Good morning sleeping beauty, and how are we feeling?” His tone told her she had definitely indulged the night before.“Erm…yeah...not great.” She pulled the cover up and suddenly realised she was naked. “Oh…did we…”Josh raised his eyebrows. “Hell no. You’re great in bed, but I’m not doing you when you’re semi-conscious.”“Then why…”
Daniel was definitely dressed for a date. He was wearing smart dark blue trousers with shiny chestnut dress shoes. His white shirt had clearly been meticulously ironed. Miranda had to admit, he looked pretty good. For a moment, no-one said anything. Miranda just looked at the two people by the doorway, a little opened mouthed. Josh looked utterly confused.“Surprise!” Sharon announced feebly.Miranda still wasn’t able to say anything, so Sharon clearly decided she was just going to pretend everything was fine.“Come on Josh, help me get things ready. You’ll need to set another place for dinner if you’re staying.”
Once they’d sat down on Miranda’s sofa, Josh started to fill her in on what had happened after she’d left. He looked tired and upset. There were red splotches around his eyes, and Miranda was pretty certain he’d been crying.“Mum basically gave me an ultimatum. Either I don’t see you anymore, or I leave her house. You can probably tell which one I chose.” He ran his fingers through his hair and exhaled heavily. Her heart ached for him. “You don’t have to do this. I don’t want you to destroy your relationship with your mum for me.” She took his hand in hers and began softly tracing the back of it with her finger.“Did you mean what you said?” Miranda looked up to meet his gaze. “Did you mean it
God, she hoped Sharon wanted to talk properly. Maybe there was a way they could work this out. When she heard nothing from the receiver, she wondered if it hadn’t been an intentional call.“Sharon?”Hearing his mums name, Josh came in to listen to the conversation. Miranda put her phone on loudspeaker so he would be able to hear. Finally, she heard her voice.“I just wanted to let you know, I am planning on informing your new employer about your disgusting relationship.”Her voice was slurring a little, and Miranda could tell she’d been drinking. Her eyes flickered up to Josh’s
The whole shop was silent. Natasha was holding her Champagne mid sip staring wide-eyed at Miranda. Her mum looked horrified, and Chloe…well. Miranda didn’t have to wait long to find out how she was feeling.“YOU FUCKING BITCH!” Within a fraction of a second, Chloe was launching herself at Miranda. Clear intent to use her stiletto shaped acrylics to gouge out her older sisters’ eyes. Miranda was unusually quick however, and dodged her sister's attack, the dress she was holding crashing to the ground. The sound of her mum’s voi
Miranda felt as if she was in a beautiful dream. She couldn’t conceive how things had turned around so quickly. Just a few days ago she had felt so entirely lost, so completely consumed by despair that happiness had become a distant memory. Now, he was awake. He was getting better. His mum had accepted them. Miranda could not have wished for more. When Josh had woken up, he had been overjoyed to find that his mother and girlfriend were reunited. After all, they were the people he loved the most in the world. They were his family. Once he had regained some strength, Sharon had bought a pack of cards into the hospital, and they had all played cards together. Now Sharon understood their relationship, Miranda felt like she had her old friend back, except this time it was stronger. They bonded over their love for Josh, both knowing that
Miranda hurried as quickly as she could to the café, scared that if she took too long Sharon would change her mind. She had no idea what Sharon was going to say. There was every chance she would simply berate her further. Maybe she would warn her not to come back and to leave them alone. But Miranda knew she had to try. There could be a chance, however small, Sharon would at least tell her how Josh was.Following the signs on the beams that jutted out from the ceiling, she soon came upon the meeting place. Due to the time of day, it was busy, and she frantically searched over the many tables for Sharon. The smell of food that had been boiling or simmering all day reached her nose. It was not a pleasant one, and it did nothing but increase the feeling of sickness in her stomach. Then a figure got to their feet, her attention caught. It was her. She was at a table right at the back of the dining area.
“I cannot believe you have the audacity to show your face in here,” Sharon spat. She was trembling with rage.Miranda buckled under her gaze filled with pure hatred.Linda began to speak. “Perhaps I should wheel you back now Miranda?”She nodded. She couldn’t bear to be persecuted by Sharon right now. She felt too fragile.“Oh no. Now you’re here I want you to listen to what I have to say.”Miranda asked Linda to wait, and the nurse reluctantly obliged.“Are you aware of the catalogue of injuries my son is currently suffering from?”
Miranda tried to open her eyes. She was vaguely aware of a pain in her head. It also didn’t feel like her body was in the right place. But she couldn’t work that out right now. Where was she? Finally opening her eyes, she tried to bring them to focus. All she could make out was scraps of metal and glass. Then it started to come back to her. The lorry. Josh driving. The lorry swerving into Josh’s side…Frantically looking over to her right, she caught sight of him. Her heart broke as she took in the image before her. There were cuts all over his face, likely from the smashed windscreen and driver side window. His right arm was at an odd angle, and she thought that it must be broken. His eyes were shut, and his lips were parted ever so slightly. She tried to call out to him, but it came out as more of a croak. “Josh? Josh wake up! Josh!”&
The next morning, she knew if she didn’t insist on going out, Josh would be quite happy spending the entire day in bed having sex. It wasn’t that Miranda didn’t like the idea, but she fancied getting out into the sunshine. Now she had this new attitude of not caring what people thought, she wanted to go out with Josh. Tell the world, ‘he’s mine’.Now it was March, the first signs of spring were appearing. Roger had told Miranda of a bluebell wood a few miles out of the city, and she suggested her and Josh spend their Saturday morning there. Miranda loved nature, and there was nothing like spring flowers after a cold winter. As she picked up her car keys, she held them out to him. “Do you want to drive?”He hesitated a little, but
The next few days for Miranda passed by in a much happier haze. They went to the university together, and came home together. Miranda even let Josh drive a few times so he could start getting used to the traffic. It was a strange feeling, letting him be in control of something so important as her car, but she also kind of liked it too. There was something sexy about the look of concentration on his face, and his strong hand changing gears. He was going to start proper lessons next week, and when he passed, she would definitely be letting him take the controls more often.Miranda was also finding great pleasure in her work. All it took was to get her head into not giving a crap about what other people thought. After that, she could focus fully on what her role was going to be about. It was Friday lunch time, and her and Roger were taking advantage of a particularly sunny spring da
The next morning, Miranda was under no illusion that she was alone. The first thing she did was check her phone. But there was no message. She made herself go through the motions of the day, trying to block out any thoughts or feelings. It was easier that way.Dr Bainbridge took her into the archaeological room in the afternoon and despite her depression, she did enjoy looking at some of the recent Roman artifacts from the last dig. He left her to study a copper coin with the face of Emperor Nero embossed onto it. Under the microscope she could see all the intricate details of his profile. Miranda became aware of someone standing beside her. A short man in his early 40’s with thick rimmed spectacles had appeared to the left of her. He gave her a large grin and introduced himself.“Hi, Miranda isn’t it? I’m Roger.” M
Josh waited in the library until Miranda finished work so they could go back together. She partly wished he hadn’t, she wanted to be alone. His easy smile came into view as he walked towards her car. He got in and went to kiss her, but she moved her face a little so he got her cheek. He ignored this, and instead asked her eagerly about her first day.
