JULIA

My heart sank.

'Don't ruin it for me with a child.'

The words echoed in my mind over and over again.

Come to think of it, Evan wasn't too fond of kids even before. I could vividly remember our conversation then.

"Do you want kids?" I asked as I played with his hair.

He closed his eyes and let out a deep breath. I wasn't sure if it was out of relaxation or because of the question.

"Evan?" I asked since he hadn't responded for a few seconds.

He opened his eyes and stared right back at me. Even if we've been together for so long, I still can't get over the fact of how handsome he was everytime we locked eyes.

"Now?" he asked with a teasing tone.

I clicked my tongue and softly nudged his shoulder. "Not now, of course!" I exclaimed. "We're still living off of our parents' money. How can we raise a child in this economy? Gosh, just thinking about the expenses makes my head hurt."

"I'm talking about the future," I softly added. "Would you want that?"

I pursed my lips. I knew about Evan

  • His Secret Heir, His Deepest Regret   Chapter 9: ANDY

ANDYI was nearly at the corner of my building, ready to head back to my pad, when I heard a voice behind me. “Andy Johnson, right?” A familiar tone rang out.I turned and—great. Miss Dickson, in her usual eccentric fashion, was donning a bright scarf that looked like it had escaped from a circus. “You’re the lead for this year’s production, correct? Illusion of Roses?” she added. I paused. “Yes, ma’am.”Athena stood behind her, her hands clasped neatly in front of her. “I was just looking for you,” Miss Dickson continued, her eyes sparkling with excitement. “I wanted a quick chat with the leads and the director. Mindy and I will be upstairs speaking with the writers for a moment, but could you two wait for us inside that café?”I pursed my lips as I glanced behind. Athena linked her arms behind her back and swayed slightly on her heels. “Of course, Miss Dickson. We’ll be there.”I didn’t say anything, simply sighed and nodded, shoving my hands deep into my pockets. We stepped i

  • His Secret Heir, His Deepest Regret   Chapter 8: CALLIE

CALLIE This was a grand opportunity.Sure, I’d never acted before—not unless you count pretending the roleplays I did with the twins back at home. I’ve been a princess, a maid, a bartender, a mom, and a dad. You name it. I’ve probably done it all. I knew this was different, but I wanted to step out of my comfort zone, like Andy. He was already doing something outside his element, and if I was being honest, I wanted to meet him there. It felt like the right kind of terrifying. So when Mindy asked, “Anybody else?” and looked around the room, I stood up and raised my hand.“What’s your name again?” she asked. “Callie!” I exclaimed excitedly. There was a slight frown on her forehead before she turned around to write my name on the board. “Anyone else?” she asked. There were crickets. “Great,” she said, clapping once. “Let’s hear from each of you. Just a little about yourself, maybe why you want to play Mia.”Athena stood first before I had the opportunity to raise my hand. “Hi, I

  • His Secret Heir, His Deepest Regret   Chapter 7: ANDY

ANDYAnother pack of strawberry jelly sat on my desk before I even had the chance to draw a breath. I stared at it for a moment before letting out a weary sigh. “Don’t worry. That’s new,” Callie whispered, settling into the seat beside mine. I glanced at the colorful packaging and then back at her, shaking my head before reluctantly taking it. Arguing with her was an exercise in futility—she’d just leave it there anyway, and I’d invariably find it squished beneath my textbooks later on. “Thanks,” I muttered. She beamed widely as she pulled out her notebook, eager to begin our class. Just then, a tall woman in a flowing mustard-yellow dress strutted in: our General Art teacher—a strict woman with boundless ambition—Miss Dickson. The thick frames of her glasses magnified her piercing gaze, and the bangles on her arms clinked with every move. “We met just yesterday for introductions, but now it’s time to get down to business! I’m thrilled to be your General Art instructor," she st

  • His Secret Heir, His Deepest Regret   Chapter 6: CALLIE

CALLIE I was sitting under the shade of the tree behind the campus garden, a quiet little nook that most people tended to overlook. In front of me lay my packed lunch: rice adorned with little sausage octopuses I had made simply because I wanted something cute. Earlier, I had debated whether I should pack something for Andy, too—a little bento, perhaps. But ultimately, I opted to bring only one for myself. After all, you can’t plow the whole field in one go, right? It’s all about sprinkling in the effort, bit by bit. I still knew how to play hard to get! “Callie?” I paused, chopsticks halfway to my mouth. “Sammantha?” She grinned, marching across the grass. “It’s Sammy! I’ve told you plenty of times.” “Right, right. Sammy. You’re studying here, too?” “I could say the same thing to you.” We exchanged playful ‘what-are-you-doing-here?’ expressions, but deep down, we both felt a sense of gratitude for each other’s presence. When I was in high school, I had plenty of friends, but

  • His Secret Heir, His Deepest Regret   Chapter 5: ANDY

ANDY“Do you want to eat together?”The orientation had just concluded, and I was right; they were going to send the details to everyone’s school email. I had just wasted my time being there.“Andy!” Callie exclaimed, capturing my attention. I sighed and finally turned to her. Her voice was too bright. It was like sunlight in your eyes when you were simply trying to walk in peace.“I have somewhere to be,” I replied flatly, shifting my bag on my shoulder. That wasn’t entirely true.Where I was going was my own place. To fry another egg—probably overcook it—add some rice, pretend it was a real meal, and maybe read another chapter of my law book while sipping soup from a mug. I wasn’t exactly booked and busy at this time. But the thought of sitting across from her, with her wide grin and gentle eyes, made my chest tighten in a way I didn’t like. With that feeling weighing on me, I began to descend the steps of the auditorium, the noise behind me fading. However, it seemed that the uni

  • His Secret Heir, His Deepest Regret   Chapter 4: CALLIE

CALLIEGetting into this school wasn’t just hard—it was like trying to win a lottery while blindfolded, underwater, and upside-down. One of the best in the city, if not the best, and somehow, by a miracle, my name showed up on the scholarship list. And now, here I was. Orientation day. Wide-eyed, I was carrying a borrowed tote bag stuffed with snacks and a pencil case shaped like a fish. Don’t ask. It was a project made by the twins, and I just didn’t have the heart to throw it away. I walked through the large glass doors like I belonged there—even though my sneakers were from a secondhand store and my jeans were about five years old. I didn’t know anyone here yet, but I was excited. Okay, terrified and excited. I stepped into the auditorium and immediately regretted not brushing my hair one more time. People looked like they had just stepped out of fashion magazines. Everyone had dewy skin and unexplainable auras. I quickly climbed up the steps, aiming for the backmost row. M
