We arrived at Mateo's house about an hour ago. Mila was sitting on my lap while she played with my hair.
I was waiting for Mateo to come back since he had left thirty minutes ago to go handle "business" downtown. He left me in our bedroom before he took off. I sighed lightly before I placed Mila down next to me. "Here," I handed her iPad over to her and she smiled before she took it from me. She placed all her attention on her iPad so I got up from the bed before I walked over to where my closet used to be. I opened the door and my heart skipped a beat. All my clothes were still there. I thought he would've gotten rid of them by now. I walked into the closet before I sat down on a chair in a far left corner of the closet and memories of Mateo and me came flooding through my mind. I still remember the day Mateo brought me to this house for the first time. After seeing it I begged him to buy it for us. Not that I needed to beg him for it, I just wanted him to see that I needed him. I wanted him to know that I loved the house that he picked out for us. And what's not to love Mateo knew me better than anyone else in this world. He knew what I liked and disliked. He knew everything about me back then, he was my life. I wiped a stray tear from my cheek before I stood up from the chair I was sitting in. I should go check up on Mila. I walked out of my closet and froze in my steps when I saw Mateo kneeling down in front of Mila. She had a broad smile on her face as she listened to whatever it is that he was telling her. "Mateo-" I started and he looked up at me. "Here's your mom now. Shall we go down to the kitchen then?" Mateo asked Mila and she excitedly nodded at him. "Come on, mommy! We're gonna make pizza!" Mila told me as Mateo picked her up from the bed. He threw her over his shoulder before they left our bedroom and I looked at myself in the mirror before I followed them downstairs. I don't want Mila to know that I'm upset. Once we were all in the kitchen I smiled at Mila. Mateo placed her on the ground so I knelt down in front of her. "Mila, Mr Mateo is a very important person and he was wondering if he could get to know you better." I told Mila and she frowned at me before she looked over at Mateo. "Who is he, mommy?" She asked me with a frown on her forehead and I looked over at Mateo who nodded at me. "He's an old friend, cariña." I told Mila and she looked down at her shoes. "I thought you didn't have any friends." She uttered in confusion and Mateo knelt down in front of her and I stood up so that I could move out of their way. "Mila, I know this might sound a bit strange to you but I care about you and mommy. I wish that we could've met a little bit earlier than now but I promise you that I will cherish every moment I have with you." Mateo told Mila. "I trust him." I told her in a reassuring tone and that's what finally convinced her to look up at him. "You know me being your mom's friend means that I'll protect you and your mommy from whatever gets in your way. Nothing bad will ever happen to you as long as I'm around." Mateo told Mila and her eyes widened at his words. "Really?" She asked him with hope filled eyes. "Really." Mateo told her and she stretched her tiny hand out to him in a greeting manner. Mateo lightly chuckled before he shook her hand and I wiped a stray tear from my cheek. She will never know that Mateo is her father. I'll make sure of that. "The family wants to welcome you back on Christmas. They want to meet Mila." Mateo told me before he picked Mila up into his arms. "Do I have a choice?" I blankly asked. "It's your duty, Hera." He told me and I just silently looked at him. "Mateo-" I tried to argue but he stopped me before I could even start. "Hera." He said while looking into my eyes and I nodded at him. "Fine. I'll go but only if you tell everyone that we're getting a divorce." I told Mateo and he frowned at me. "Fine, stay at home." He blankly told me. "But I'm taking Mila with me." He said and my eyes widened in shock. "She's staying here with me." I told him and he gently placed Mila on the countertop before looking at me through narrowed eyes. "What do you think, Mila?" Mateo asked Mila who was looking at us while quietly sitting on the countertop. "We should go, mommy!" She told me and Mateo smirked at me. "Fine but I'm only going because Mila wants us to go." I told Mateo and he nodded at me. "Very well then. I trust that you will be on your best behavior." Mateo told me and I nodded at him. "For Mila I will." I told him before going over to wrap my arms around her. "You should probably start making the pizza." I told Mateo and he nodded before walking over to one of his cupboards. He searched the cupboard for dear life until he found all the ingredients that we would need. Clearly he doesn't cook. Mateo started making the pizza and Mila told us a story about her art teacher and Mateo and I intently listened to her talking. She can talk quite a lot when she feels up to it. Once the pizza was done I fixed a plate for Mila. "Mila, you have to compare my pizza to mommy's okay. Tell us who's pizza taste better, okay?" Mateo told Mila and she nodded at him. She cut her pizza into tiny squares before she digged in. Mateo and I hopefully watched her as she chewed the food in her mouth and Mila placed her fork down on the table. "I'm sorry, mommy's taste better." Mila told him in an apologetic tone and I gave her a high five which made her smile so broadly it made my heart melt. "Yeah but mine is still good, right?" Mateo asked her in concern and she nodded at him with a smile on her face. I quietly watched as Mila offered a piece of her pizza to Mateo. He looked up at me with a smile on his face and I gulped the painful knot in my throat down. He must hate me for keeping her away from him for this long. Probably just as much as I hate him for killing my dad. I will never forgive Mateo for what he did. And Mila can never find out that he's her father.Umberto held my tiny waist as he took my measurements, moving quickly and quietly while writing them down in a small notebook. "All done." He said after a few minutes, and I started getting dressed again. "I thought it was a joke when the don told me I had to take your measurements. But here you are, little dove." Umberto said with a grin, and I smiled back. "That's right, I'm back," I replied softly, and he sighed lightly. "My god, I can't believe it's been six years. You look good, healthy. And you're still my prettiest client," he told me, and I chuckled lightly. "You flatter me, but I've seen the models you work with," I teased, and he smiled. "And what's the difference between you and those models? You're flawless, Hera. I missed you so much," Umberto said before pulling me into a tight hug. "We've got so much to catch up on. You should come over for lunch sometime. A lot's changed since you left," he added, his voice soft. I nodded at him. "I fear we might've needed you b
I walked down the hallway before I entered Mila's room. I found her inside talking to a woman with short light brown hair and curly bangs. She smiled when she saw me and I frowned lightly. "And who might you be?" I blankly asked her. "I'm Mila's babysitter. Mateo appointed me. My name is Cara." She told me and I frowned at her."Mateo?" I asked her and she nodded at me. "Shouldn't you address him as the don? I'm the only person who's allowed to call him by his name." I told her and she nodded at me. "Of course, my apologies." She said with a smile on her face and I blankly looked at her. "You don't have to come in anymore. I'll talk to Mateo but I don't think your services will be required anymore. I'll do just fine raising my daughter on my own." I told her before I picked Mila up into my arms. "Mommy but I like her," Mila whined. "Mila we'll talk about this later. Okay?" I told her and she sadly nodded at me. "You may go," I told Cara and she nodded at me before she came over
"Familia, amigos, estamos aquí hoy para celebrar la vida de nuestro verdadero salvador, Jesucristo. Disfruta de este festín que te he preparado, lo mío es tuyo." Mateo said and everyone raised their champagne glasses in the air. (Family, friends, we are here today to celebrate the life of our true savior, Jesus Christ. Enjoy this feast that I've prepared for you, what's mine is yours.) "Por favor, demos la bienvenida a mi hermosa esposa y a nuestra hija Mila. Serán tratados con respeto y los honraréis. Estas son mis ordenes." Mateo continued, and the room dawned in silence before everyone brought their hands together in a praying manner. (Please welcome back my beautiful wife, and our daughter Mila. They will be treated with respect and you will honor them. These are my orders.) Mateo sat back down before he gestured for the music to continue. I saw Cara waving at Mila so I frowned at Mateo. "She's a friend." He said, knowing what I was about to ask. "I didn't know you
I watched as Mateo and his mom came walking back inside the dining hall. Aurellia and Martín followed shortly behind them. I finally managed to get Mila back from that vampire, Cara. After talking to Umberto and Javi, we decided to go back to our table, and now she was holding onto my hand while she ate a cupcake that Umberto gave her. "Hi Mila, I'm Mateo's mom. It's so nice to finally meet you." Lola told Mila who smiled up at her. "Nice to meet you too." Mila kindly told Lola who nodded at her with a smile on her face. "You're very kind, Mila," Lola told her with a kind smile on her face and Mila looked down at the cupcake in her hand. "May I get a hug?" Lola asked Mila, and she looked back up before she slowly nodded at Lola, and Lola picked her up into her arms. "Oh, you're so pretty; you're a replica of your mom," Lola told her before tickling her and Mila laughed at her actions. "She's so precious," Lola told Mateo. She was avoiding eye contact with me; she cl
***I stumbled against a tree trunk and rushed to get up from the ground. I desperately tried to catch my breath, but my chest was burning, and my heart was aching. I got back up to my feet and continued running through the woods. I came to an abrupt stop when I reached an old graveyard. All the graves were covered in grass, their tombstones shattered to pieces except for one grave in particular. I hesitantly took a step forward. I sucked in a deep breath before carefully walking over to the only standing tombstone in the entire graveyard.I frowned when I saw my name engraved on the tombstone. "Hera Delacruz."Something was written in fine print under my name, so knelt in front of the grave before narrowing my eyes to better my vision. "Like father, like daughter." I read the fine print out loud. I wildly shook my head before getting up from where I was sitting and the ground beneath my feet gave way from under me. A scream left my mouth as I fell into the grave.***"Mommy!""Mo
"Lola, welcome," I said as she stepped over the threshold. She gave me a tight smile before her expression shifted to one of cool assessment. Her eyes swept me up and down without a word before she brushed past me, leaving me to press my lips together awkwardly. "Hola, Martín," I greeted warmly, and he responded with a friendly smile before stepping inside. Aurellia stood still for a moment, her gaze cold and indifferent. She walked past without a word. "Hello to you too, Aurellia," I muttered under my breath, tired of the silent hostility. Beside me, Mila clung to my hand, her big eyes watching the exchange. "She seems mad at you, Mommy," Mila whispered, her innocence cutting through the tension. "She does, doesn’t she?" I replied with a wry smile, and Mila nodded solemnly. Her mood brightened as she spotted the next arrival. "Here comes Uncle Tiago!" she exclaimed, tugging at my hand. Tiago approached with his usual swagger, something hidden behind his back. "The man,
This has been a long night.I quietly sat at our table while watching Mila playing with her friends. Everyone was off conversing or dancing to the music that the live band provided. Everyone here fits in somewhere, except me. I don't belong here. I looked over at Mateo, and a tight and painful knot started to form in my throat. I don't recognize him anymore. He's the complete opposite of the person he used to be when we first met. He never told me what to do or who to talk to. God knows why he's doing so now.My phone suddenly made a pinging sound so I grabbed it from where it was lying on the table. A notification popped up on the screen so I quickly clicked on it. I waited as my messenger app opened. I saw a message from an unknown number. I opened the message and a frown settled on my forehead. A picture. I adjusted my brightness and could finally make out what the picture displayed. My eyes went wide in shock. I left the dinner table before stumbling into a random bathroom.
"Take her away." He angrily told Rafe who nodded at him before he grabbed me by my waist. I fought against him with everything inside of me. I scratched and punched him in the face as hard as I could. Rafe grunted in frustration before he tightened his grip around my waist. He finally managed to pull me away from Tiago and I angrily hit him in the abdomen with my elbows. Still, he didn't let me go. "Let me go!" I angrily yelled at him as he started carrying me over to a black Jeep. He reluctantly placed me on the ground but kept his arms tightly locked around me."Mateo!" I yelled when I saw him pointing his gun at Tiago's lifeless body on the ground. "If you shoot him, I will kill you myself! God knows I will and I will hold this against you forever." I promised him and he angrily tucked his gun back inside his waistband. He came walking over to me, and suddenly, I remembered the gun I had strapped to my leg earlier. I clenched my jaw before grabbing the gun and pointing it at Mat
After dinner I stood on wobbly legs. I hastily made my way out of the restaurant and Mateo followed me outside."Be a good girl and drive home as fast as you can." Mateo told me before hitting my ass. I bit into my bottom lip and watched him confidently walking back to his car. I grabbed my keys from the valet before climbing into my car. I drove ahead of him and made my way home deciding that I was tired of being so deliciously tortured by him. That I needed him inside of me.Once I parked my car in it's usual spot in the mansion parking lot I jumped out of the vehicle. Mateo had his car parked next to mine, he placed a passionate kiss on my lips once I reached him. We made our way into the house, I ran upstairs and Mateo hit my ass while following me to our room. I opened the door and froze in my spot when I found Mila asleep in our bed."Cold shower." I told Mateo and he nodded at me. "Definitely." He uttered and we sneaked into the room and grabbed our bath essentials. We took
WARNING: SEXUAL CONTENT!I stepped out of the elevator and made my way to Mateo's office. Every employee I passed kindly greeted me. I took my sunglasses off and placed them into my bag. I reached to knock on the door but it swung open before I could do so. My heart skipped a beat when I saw Cara walking out of Mateo's office, she fixed her lipgloss then her hair before smirking at me. I rolled my eyes at her and made my way into Mateo's office. I slammed the door in her face before going over to Mateo."Mateo, what the hell was that woman doing in your office?" I angrily asked him. "She came to hand in her resignation." Her calmly stated. "I already fired her, Mateo! Did you let her work here after I fired her as Mila's babysitter?" I wildly asked him and his eyes slowly ran over me as if he just noticed that I was wearing his favorite color. "I did." He blankly uttered so I walked over to where he was sitting. I angrily glared down at him before pointing my index finger at him.
I walked into the Salvador mansion with Mila by my side. I could already feel the shift that was about to happen. Mila ran upstairs to go put her backpack in her room so I decided to wait for her inside the living room and found Lola sitting on a couch, she put her phone aside and placed all her focus on me."Hera? Where have you been?" Lola curiously asked me as soon as I entered the living room. "I was in town- doing some shopping-- but I couldn't find anything I liked so I decided to come back home." I lied to her through my teeth and Lola just nodded at me. "And have you calmed down yet, since this morning?" She asked me. "Yes, Lola. I'm not leaving my husband, if that's what you're asking." I uttered in annoyance and she smiled at me. "That's good," she told me and a document lying on the table caught my eye. I narrowed my eyes to read what it said and found that it was the results of a paternity test. "The results came back positive." She told me and I faked shock. "Wow wh
I sat in a dark basement, scared of what might happen next. The door suddenly opened and I sat upright before backing into the wall behind me."Hera, follow me," I heard a familiar voice. I slapped myself as I got up from the ground. I followed the person outside since I couldn't get a good look at them in the dark. Once we got outside an old man stood in front of me, his back facing me. His hair was grey and his hands were behind back. He was wearing a black ring on his ring finger with the crest of the Salvador mafia carved into it. But how?"Leonardo?" I uttered in disbelief. "Yes, child." He uttered before turning around to face me and my mouth went agape. He seemed much older now, he had wrinkles around his eyes, they were still as blue as ever.I took his face into my hands to check if he was real and he was- real. Alive. I wordlessly watched him and he showed no emotions on his face. "Yes. I'm alive, Hera." He assured me before opening his arms for me. I skeptically watched
The next morning everyone sat at the breakfast table, quiet and unmoving. Not even Mila had something to say and she's usually the most talkative person in the mornings.Mateo looked around the table before frowning at me so I shrugged at him in response. Uncle Charlie and Aunt Maya just quietly ate their breakfast and kept to themselves."Did something happen that I should know about?" Mateo asked and Lola frowned over at him. "Is something wrong, son?" Martín asked Mateo. "I'm not your son, Martín." Mateo tiredly told him and my eyes slightly widened at his words. "Lola wants me to fix things between you and Dario." I blurted the words out and Lola angrily glared over at me. "Because you're the one who screwed them up in the first place." She angrily told me. "How? By telling my husband that his brother was doing dealings with his enemies behind his back?" I asked Lola and she set her fork down on the table, trying her best not to lose her temper. "And then he tried to kill me
I pulled the black beanie I was wearing over my ears and quietly walked through the gates of the Salvador mansion. I was escorted by a guard, we sneaked around the back of the house and I entered the house through the backdoor.Lola frowned at me when she saw me. "Hera, where the hell have you been? One of the kids just called asking if we were expecting guests." She told me. "Who exactly called you?" I curiously wanted to know. "Carlos, he stands guard at the gate.""Have you informed Mateo about this, yet? I didn't get the chance to." I asked and followed her into the living room. "Yes, he says he's not far from the house, that he'll be here in five minutes." Lola answered before sitting down on a sofa. "You're sitting down?" I asked her in disbelief and she frowned at me. "I'm not doing anything until my son gets here. I'll wait for his orders." She blankly stated. "You do realize who's standing in front of your house right now, don't you?" I asked her and she nodded at me.
Mila and I quietly walked through our entire mafia, as they stood lined up in front of the house. They smiled and waved at Mila and she tightly clenched her fists around the straps of her backpack.Mateo lifted Mila up before placing her in the backseat. Once he was done buckling her seatbelt we both climbed inside the car. The family insisted on being there for Mila on her first day of school and we simply couldn't refuse them. We drove to Mila's school, she couldn't stop talking about how excited she was about her new school. I was scared for my daughter and nervous all at the same time. I don't want this cruel world to know her. My beautiful little girl. We stopped in front of the St. Marks school campus, Mila jumped out of the car and I handed her backpack to her before I knelt in front of her. "Come on, give me a good one." I told her and she placed a kiss on my cheek before wrapping her tiny arms around me. "Te quiero mucho, Mami." She smiled at me so I brushed my hands o
Mancini is dead. And-Mateo killed everyone in Mancini's family yet we're the ones suffering in the aftermath. We're still mourning Aurellia's death and its been two weeks since her murder. Rafe changed. He couldn't cope with the loss of his girlfriend. I wasn't here to witness their love blossom but from what I've heard it was pretty great.Life is unfair like that. True love only comes once in our lifetime and death is simply the tax that we pay for love. "Mommy," Mila curiously uttered from where she was resting her head on my lap. "Yes, mi cielo." I smiled down at her and she lifted her head. "When are we leaving?" She curiously wanted to know and I frowned at her. "You want to leave?" I asked her in a gentle tone and she nodded at me in response. "Why?" I asked again. "I don't like it here, Mommy." She told me and I frowned at her."Then what do you suggest we do?" I asked her and she pressed her lips together. "I want to go to school." She said and I tried my best not to
I quietly sat in the living room while holding onto Mateo's arm, I had rested my head on his shoulder a while ago and I wasn't planning on moving it anytime soon."We recently found Aurellia's body in the pantry. She was shot three times. She was caught off guard. And yes Aurellia was one of our best fighters but the enemy doesn't care if it's a fair fight or not, you've seen it yourselves. They want to see our blood. For seven years we had no equals, no enemies. But they've gotten close to us again. And when the enemy comes to ambush us at night I expect you to join me on the battlefield. This neighborhood is our home and we will fight for it. We took an oath to protect The Heights and its people. And I don't know about you but my oath is my honor." Mateo uttered with pride and every man inside the living room stood up. "My oath is my honor! Salvador Heights is my home and I will die protecting it!" They started chanting in unison and I felt goosebumps forming on my skin. Rafe sudd
