Aira remained silent for a while before opening her mouth to talk then shutting it again.
“Helloooo, Earth to Aira!” Meghan called out through the line,
“I don’t understand. Why would I need to meet your CEO in person. I thought those people don’t bother to be involved in minute details.” Aira finally said still not understanding what all this was about
“This is not minute details, Aira. This is a huge deal. I told you the CEO scouted you himself to be in this project and you being the illustrator is good publicity among the target market base we’re working on. Basically, all your fans should be very interested in this product. It is a huge deal…” Meghan ended her rant with a sigh and Aire almost smiled
“I know, but still, why would he want to meet me, and what would he want to discuss?” Aire asked
“Well, Vincent Valory is a very known art connoisseur and maybe he’s interested in your art. As for what he wants to see… well… He may have mentioned something about the first drafts…” Meghan added quietly and Aira’s heart jumped in its place.
“Are you telling me now that he wants to see the first drafts tonight?” Aira asked nervousness swirling within her.
“Uhm… Yes?” Meghan answered weakly
“Oh my god, they’re still not finished!” Aira exclaimed, “The deadline was supposed to be the day after tomorrow!”
“I know! He was impatient and wanted to see how far you got and how it was going,”
“What kind of artist shows their unfinished work!” Aira said into the phone fuming, was this guy mocking her?!
“Well… I don’t think that he’s meant to insult you or anything.” Meghan said probably after feeling Aira’s ire, “He’s the kind of boss who likes to keep tabs on everything and he’s really invested in this project,”
“Still, how can he ask for the drafts on the night of the exhibition,”
“I know this is sudden and kind of too much, but this is your first meeting, and I’m sure that he just wants to see you in person and get the feel of what you have in mind for the project. Like I told you, he’s pretty invested in it.”
Aira sighed letting go of her anger and trying to think rationally. Her friend was right. She always felt overprotective of her work while still developing it.
“Well then… It’s a good thing that I finished some of the characters this morning,” Aira answered feeling somehow nervous all of a sudden,
Now that she was no longer angry, she felt the fluttering of her stomach clearly.
The CEO wanted to see her work in person… No matter how long she worked as an Illustrator, Aira couldn’t get rid of this nervousness whenever she had to show someone her work.
“You did?! Oh! Thank goodness! I was afraid that you wouldn’t have been able to draw anything. I know how terrible you are with your deadlines.” Meghan exhaled
“Hey! I’m not that bad!” Aire exclaimed
“Yeah, tell that to our graphics team. Your reputation precedes you Aira,”
Aira sighed giving up on that debate, she was going to lose it anyway.
“I will bring the drafts with me, I will be there in around two hours,”
“Okay, make sure to dress like a goddess. It’s your big day!” Meg said as she hung up and Aira’s eyes went back to the dress hanging in her closet.
Dress like a goddess, huh…

Aira was struggling with her eyeliner when she heard her phone ring. Putting on her pods she answered the phone with one eye closed and the other trying to make sure that she didn’t smudge the line she just slaved for.
Who said that artists could do anything with their hands? Because she wanted to have a serious talk with them about how hard it was to put on eyeliner.
“Hi honey, are you ready for the big day?” Jace’s cheerful voice rang through the line.
“Hi, as ready as I can be… Mom in the other hand…” Aira responded as she began trying to mimic what she did in one eye on another,
“Is she okay?” Jace asked sounding confused.
“I think mom is more worried about this than she’s ever going to be about my wedding day, She called me three times today just to check in,” She added and Jace made a laughing sound that sounded a bit awkward,
“I’m sorry I can’t pick you up; Work is just crazy these days,” He said apologetic
“Don’t worry, I can always drive myself no big deal. I know you have too much on your plate right now.”
“Thanks, honey. I will make it up to you when this is finished.”
“It’s alright, Jace. See you tonight,”
“Yeah, see you tonight.”
Aira clicked off her phone and smiled, Jace would always be Jace, her worries were unfounded because of her still lingering uncertainty about their relationship.
She needed to sort things out, in her head about him she owed him that… It was the least she could do after accepting his extraordinary proposal…
Aira thought back about Jace’s proposal, it was only two weeks ago. The over the top elaborated proposal that took her by surprise.
At one moment she was entering the private restaurant room to meet Jace’s parents. The next she found herself in front of a kneeling Jace proposing to her. Before she could even say yes he was hugging her and shouting that she said yes, and then suddenly she was surrounded by their parents and friends shouting congratulations.
Aira hadn’t been that much against it, but she hadn’t felt the push to do it either. Which was probably why she felt that she was dragged into it and kept avoiding any talk about weddings or any kind of commitment.
She remembered her eyes meeting her father’s that day and he gave her a worried look. She had realized then that she was making a helpless shocked expression that brought on his suspicion.
Later on, he'd asked her if she'd really wanted it. When she assured him that she was alright with all the bravado she could muster, he had sighed and told her one thing,
“Whatever your decision, we will be here to support you. Just make sure it’s really what you want, if not, it’s alright to take some time to think about what you really want to do.”
His words still rang in her head to this day.
After finishing the last touches to her makeup, Aira picked up the drafts she had finished and took one final look at her attire as she made her way outside.
Her beige dress was a good contrast to her light brown long hair which she decided to leave it as it is except for pulling it away from her face with two braids to each side. There was a limit to how much time she was willing to spend in front of a mirror and her long hair was just out of luck this time.
As Aira made her way out of the apartment, she bumped into her neighbors who expressed their surprise in various ways at seeing her dressed up.
“What’s the occasion?” Asked Dane, her thirty-something neighbor who was famous for bringing just about anyone back to his apartment with him.
Well, at least they were all human beings as far as Aira knew…
“It’s a work thing,” Aira responded not giving any more explanations.
“Our artist is going out, must be an art function of some sort. Do you need a plus one?”
“No thank you, my boyfriend will meet me there,” Aira said
“Hmm, if only that boyfriend hadn’t shown up just when I was planning to make a move on you,”
“I would have said no,” Aira said laughing, “ Becoming one of your conquests was never on my list Dane,”
“Woah, that hurt,” He feigned touching his heart.
“See you later,” Aira added walking away from her goofy, handsome neighbor.
As she drove her car, Aira wondered if she was going to reach the exhibition in enough time to prepare for her unexpected meeting.
Her car shook violently sending her forward bashing her chest against the steering wheel before being pushed back by the inflatable bag.
The last thing she heard was the sound of glass shattering before everything went black.
Opening her eyes, Aira slowly moved her body noting the sting in her arm and the slight soreness in her chest. Looking around, she realized that she was still in the middle of the highway where people were starting to gather and some of them were holding their phones to report the accident. Slowly looking to each side, she realized that the other car smashed into the passenger side of hers. Hence the throbbing in her left arm. Noting that her life wasn’t in danger, the first thing that she thought about was that she was going to be late for her exhibition. She opened the door slowly maneuvering her way out of the car clutching her phone in her hand. As she stood up, she was hit with a sudden bout of dizziness and lost her footing for a moment. She felt something hard support her back as strong arms wrapped around her effectively stopping her fall and sending a wave of electricity through her skin where the hand touched. Funny that the first coherent thoughts she could muster out o
“OMG! You look phenomenal!” Meghan exclaimed dramatically as Aira Emerged from behind the makeshift curtains they set up for her to change. “Thanks, I guess,” Aira responded hesitantly, “I’m still not sure about this, I somehow feel bad about wearing this dress,” “Why would you?! Didn’t you say that he was worried about ruining your dress and injuring you?” “Well, he technically didn’t. The accident wasn’t his fault, so him sending an expensive dress like this is a bit too much. I don’t even know his name or how to thank him for it.” “Nah! Don’t worry too much about it! He probably did this because he liked you and he wanted to do something for you,” “I have a fiance, Megs, and he knows it,” Aira responded feeling somehow guilty at the thought of Jace. “Ant that’s why he did this instead of asking for your number!” Meghan said eying the dress wistfully, “Ugh, look at you lucky little boar! Do you know how hard it is to get a dress like that?! The designer who made it doesn’t tak
“Aira, this is Carter Polland, Mr.Valory’s personal assistant,” Meghan said introducing the handsome, almost pretty young man in front of her. “Mr. Polland, This is Aira Brian,” “Nice to finally make your acquaintance, Miss. Brian. My boss is such a huge fan of your work, I hope everything is to your liking.” “It’s nice to meet you too, Mr. Polland! Of course! Everything is perfect, thank you very much!” “Please call me Carter, we will be working with each other from now on so let’s drop the formalities,” Carter announced and Aira smiled “Call me Aira then, Carter. It’s very good to make your acquaintance,” Aira said smiling at the deceptively charming secretary. She glanced at her friend to find her keeping a good distance from the amiable secretary and stiffly staring at Aira who wanted to laugh at the sight. Maybe she was going to have her revenge on Megs for teasing her earlier sooner than she expected. Her usually fun-loving and social friend was acting like she was in a h
Aira’s eyes were fixed on the sight before her as if she had been slapped on her face.Jace was standing there fumbling with his belt to cover up a part of his anatomy that she’d never even seen before. Not that it seems like she’s missed much…Her gaze shifted to the other woman who was wearing the catering business’s uniform and trying to fit it back tightly onto her frame- her curves generously spilling out of the unbuttoned shirt.Everything looked as if she was merely an observer and none of the participants seemed to take note of her.“Of all the people that could’ve walked in on us,” Jace said with a resentful tone looking at Meghan. It didn’t seem like he noticed Aira standing right behind her. Although Meghan was much taller than Aira, there was still enough space for him to see her. But, he didn’t notice her. Aira wondered for a moment if the man ever really SAW her, but she soon she buried that thought deep within her mind, it was too late to think about that.“You cheating
Aira slowly woke to persistent beeping sounds bumping into her ears like drums. Opening her eyes she tried to sit up from her crouched position on the desk wincing as her neck and back protested against the sudden movement after such a long time resting in a wrong position.Trying to massage the back of her neck as it painfully flexed back against her fingers like some unruly child who didn’t want to be set straight, Aira looked around her through half-closed lids.Papers were strewn around her desk haphazardly with rough drafts of various characters. She had been pondering in her mind for a while waiting until the Idea completely formed in her mind. And last night they finally came to her.The drawings caught her eyes and she couldn’t help but look at them with amazement. In her furry, she had managed to complete the work of weeks within one week and only to finally sleep on her desk with her pen still in her hand. The persistent sound came through again and she turned toward the doo
The man standing before her wasn’t wearing a three piece suit like the last time she met him. Instead he was dressed casually in khaki pants and a simple white shirt, leaning against his desk with a document in his hand.Basically he looked like something out of the pages of a magazine,“You…” Aira said too shocked to say anything else.“Ah! We meet again!” The handsome businessman said with a smile, as he uncrossed his long legs and made his way toward them with the ease of a pather and the charm of a fox.“My, do you know each other?” Carter asked with a smile not seeming in the least bit surprised.“Miss. Aira and I had an unexpected encounter last week,” Vincent said, “ Though we didn’t get to introduce ourselves since she left before I could ask her about her name,” He said with a smile that looked too much like a smirk to Aira making her guards stand up to attention.Good lord, it had been him all along! And to think that she had made a fool of herself…“Yeah, last time was a bi
“What do you mean?” Aira asked looking at her friend who was looking back at the office door with a puzzled expression.“What do you mean by ‘What do I mean’?!” Maeghan said sounding surprised,“You were in there! Didn’t you see?! He was smiling! Vicent Valory was smiling! The whole time!” She said lowering her voice to make sure no one heard them.“Well, yeah. I guess he was smiling. Does he usually not do that?” Aira asked,“Usually? The man never smiles Aira! The best thing one could see from him is a tight business smile and that was solely reserved for people he conducts business with.” Meghan responded,“That’s weird. Since I met him he had always been like this. He was always charming and kind of easy to talk to.”“Aira, I’m telling you. In the years I worked here I’ve never heard anyone describe the man as charming. Handsome, maybe. Sexy, definitely, but never charming. They call him the Shark in the broad room and he does deserve that nickname if how he ruthlessly tears peopl
Aira stared at her hands on top of the table wondering how nice it would be if she had something to hold in her hands right now. It would probably help with how awkward she felt.“First of all, I wanted to apologize for what I did. Cheating on you like that was wrong. And I…”“You were doing it for a while, right?” Aira said finally gathering enough courage to look up at him in the eyes.He flinched for a moment, then he said,“How did you know?”“The real question here, Jace. The one that needs to be answered the most, is why,” Aira said calmly looking at the man who used to be her fiance.“I don’t know… It just happened…”“No, not that, Jace. Why did you want to marry me? Why did you go out with me, Jace?” Jace looked up at that question his eyes not hiding the surprise they held in them. Then as if trying to desperately hide it he looked down at the table.“I wanted to go out with you because I liked you,” He answered,“Maybe you did, I did too. At first. But things changed along
Vincent pressed Aira against the door kissing her face and neck frantically and she chuckled upon the contact her melodious laugh making him relax and smile back at her as if she was the most precious thing in the world. "Are you really here with me?" He asked cupping her cheeks and she smiled up at him and nodded. "I really am here with you. Vince. I'm not going anywhere," She said looking him in the eyes and he nodded his eyes looking vulnerable, "This feels like it's another dream," He said and she circled her arms around his waist leaning into him. "Did you have a lot of those? The dreams I mean," She said and he simply nodded. "Since the very first day that I met you. I had been dreaming about you since that day," He said looking at her with a serious look in his eyes making her wonder if that was really the truth. It can't be... He must be pulling her leg. Before she could think about anything, she felt Vincent pull her up against him and kiss the daylight out of her as he
Aira stood at the side and watched as the crowds all dressed in lavish black, circled around the huge gallery. She was standing to the side wearing a tight-laced black dress and black string high heels which made her feel both exposed and a little bit uncomfortable. There was something about dressing like this while attending an event alone. It made her feel as if she was being followed around by the gazes of any man hoping to get an easy lay tonight. Her only consolation is that this was a family event. A memorial for her grandmother. She wanted to laugh at that. This was more like a full-blown exhibition. The exhibition of the century. Her mother had went and outdid herself again with this event. Both her grandmother and Paul had been working nonstop on this. They even employed interior designers and event planners to coordinate everything to make sure the event was what their grandmother had hoped for.The woman sure had a fancy taste.Aira had been mostly working on the painting m
"It was believed that the legal battle between The CEO of Valory groups and his uncle was going to go on for years before the score is decided. But a sudden turn of events makes us wonder if that assumption is going to be proven wrong.Today, Warren Valory had been arrested for no disclosed reasons closing the chapter of a long battle that had been going on for years since the young CEO took over the company in his early twenties being one of the youngest entrepreneurs to reach such a position at such a young age.In answer to our questions this morning, Vincent Valory revealed that his uncle was only getting what he had always deserved. He said that the days when he would cover up for his uncle because he was family were gone and that the limit was set at hurting other people and committing real crimes.Other sources revealed that the real crime Mr. Valory was talking about was the attempt his uncle had made to harm his beloved wife in a hit and run causing her car to almost roll up
Aira sat down beside her mother and looked at the members of the family around her.Her uncle sat back on his chair looking as if he still believed his mother would walk into the room and announce that this was a joke. His wife sat quietly beside him as he clenched her hand in his offering him all the comfort he needed.Grace sat on the other side of the sofa leaning against paul her eyes red-rimmed and Paul held her close gently patting her shoulder while Ian stood be her side looking down at her from time to time looking worried. It paid to be the youngest member of their family. Her father on the other hand stood behind her mother his hands on her shoulders comforting her the best way he could.Aira on the other hand sat there alone as everyone wondered where her so sweet and loyal husband went at such an important moment. They were about to know why.The lawyer who sat before them cleared his throat as he pulled a piece of paper out of the envelope that he had been holding linking
There was one thing about goodbyes that Aira knew very well. And that it was a form of closure that people seek in order to make peace with the person they were never going to see again. And also with the part of them, that was attached to that person.Aira now was saying goodbye to both. And she knew that it was going to be hard, but she didn't expect it to be this hard.Standing before the coffin and away from it enough for her not to see the insides of it she remained rooted in place for a while fear gripping her heart like a vice. Her mind was like a rollercoaster of emotions and thoughts and she even started trembling again. But then she remembered."I am proud of you." That's what her grandmother had said back then.As if her mind calmed down all of a sudden from the turbulence of a storm to the calm of a sunny morning by the beach, Aira slowly stepped toward the coffin where her grandmother was laying peacefully looking like she was simply asleep. And maybe she was, but her sle
A few days later, Aira sat down in the second row as she watched her mother present her eulogy. She felt drained and cried out. In the three days since her grandmother died, Aira had been doing very little.Other than painting or staring at the painting, she spent half the time crying and the other half trying to suppress her tears. Her family was grieving and each time she found her mother sitting in a corner crying by herself, she felt her heart break a little more as she went to try to comfort her.She was tired. So tired that she felt like she was going to sit anywhere and fall asleep as soon as the funeral was over. She felt a hand sneak around her waist and pull her sideways against a muscular chest. Grateful for the support, she didn’t tell Vincent anything. She didn’t need to.He had been hovering over her since that day but she couldn’t say that his presence bothered her. Sometimes she barely noticed his presence but most of the time, he would always be in the right place at
Aira opened her eyes after a few hours from her nap feeling rested and peaceful for the first time since she discovered what Vincent had done.Jumping out of bed, she could barely fight the urge to take the brush into her hands. So without stopping to think about anything and like a lunatic with an illusionary fire chasing after her, she changed into her jeans not bothering with a new shirt, and made her way toward the workshop.Opening the door. She headed toward the untouched painting left as she had left it before the butler had come to get her.A bang in her chest sobered her but she still made her way toward it and stared at it for a few moments before she picked up a new brush and started mixing the colors and preparing for everything. After a while, she was already painting the rest of the painting unaware of what was going on around her.Vincent came barging into the room at some point and she looked at him absently wondering why he looked so worried. Then he sighed in relief
Vincent stood by the door and watched as Aira’s family fussed over her. Her mother and sister were hugging her tightly as they cried and her uncle stood away awkwardly as her father spoke to him clearly giving him a piece of his mind about what he said to her.“Thank you for finding her,” Ian said as he came up to stand beside him, “Amongst all of us, she is the one who has the hardest time.” He said.“I know. They were pretty close together,” He said with a smile his eyes never leaving her.“They were. Which is probably why she sold the mansion to you. She wanted Aira to have it one way or another.” Ian said and Vincent remained silent for a while not bothering to answer that comment.“She told me that you had a fight. She seemed upset over it, I was wondering if she would agree to come with you.” Ian added and this time Vincent looked at him.“I was wondering the same too. To be honest, I screwed up pretty badly this time and I wouldn’t have been surprised if she had refused. I had
Aira stood there in front of her mother and uncle staring at the table.“Honey, I know how hard this-““No. You can’t do this to me,” she muttered.“You have no choice, Aira, you’re an artist, you need to finish that painting. It was her last wish,” Her uncle said in a hard tone.“No!” She screamed and they were both taken aback, she took a step back startled at her own outburst.“No… I- I mean…” she stuttered taking a few steps back feeling stares on her piercing through her skin.Suddenly she felt overwhelmed, dizzy, and out of air. She wanted to throw up.“Aira, honey, are you okay?” Her mother asked looking at her with concern Aira took another step back when her mother reached out for her.“Don’t touch me…” she said dazed and her uncle stood looking at her with confusion.“Are you like this because we asked you to finish the painting?” He asked and she felt the mocking tone in his voice.“Don’t talk to me,” she gritted out glaring at them, then she turned around to find everyone l
