Athena Blackstone pov
Finding the cage had been welded together well I slid down the bars to my butt and rested my forearms on my bent knees. “This sucks,” I growled. “Yeah, and you didn't even get breakfast this morning,” Bria whimpered. “Well, since I'm not going to get fed regardless, I feel that is the least of my worries at the moment,” I huffed and listened to the birds chirping in the woods behind the cinder block structure. “Who is Gavin and what is he the prince of? Are there wolf kings around the area,” I inquired from Bria. “I thought you didn't care because he has a fiance,” she replied and I narrowed my eyes. “I'm having his pups, and he should be made aware, or do you think I should just run off and raise them both on my own?” Growling a bitter, No, my wolf grumbled in my head. “Awe, you sound disappointed, Bria,” I stated sarcastically and she huffed back, “Like you're not?” She had a point, but I was used to being burned by males, even if I felt like Gavin was different from the others. Hearing the door open I glanced over at the sunlight filling the dark space and making whoever was entering become washed out in blurry shadow. “Tell me the truth you skank! Did Gavin give you his mark,” Veronica snarled and I looked upward to the ceiling and gritted my molars. “I don't have to tell you shit,” I responded and gave her my raised brow. “I know that you fucked my husband, he told me, but now you mate with the man I wanted to be bonded to…are you out to personally raze me?” “No, you're not that special, Luna,” I growled sourly, knowing that I rubbed her raw. “Goddess, I pray that you suffer a horrible starvation death, but even that would be too good for you,” she snapped at me through the bars. “Really? You have to pray for my demise?!” I stood and grasped the bars near her. “I'm going to die because you and Jordan are worthless leaders," I asserted with a smirk. Unfortunately, I didn't get the last laugh. The bitch lifted the knife she had concealed and plummeted into my upper body. Cursing at being emotional and not recognizing the threat I fell back while she laughed insanely. “I know that you won't bleed out but that's going to hurt like hell as your wolf tries healing you without nutrients,” she cackled. Side-eyeing her I hissed as I pulled the long blade out of my flesh. “You're a dead bitch, mark my words,” I asserted and tossed the bloody knife onto the straw. “Sure, Athena, whatever you want to believe, goodbye FOREVER and tell your mother hello for me,” she quipped harshly then turned and left me. I cringed hearing the door slam behind her and put pressure on my wound that was soaking the ground where I sat. “Can you fix me, Bria,” I wheezed out to my wolf. “I am working on stopping the blood loss but I'm afraid that you will carry a scar,” she told me sullenly. “That's fine I will see it as a reminder to take her head,” I vowed. “Very well, dear," she sighed, and I closed my eyes as I rested against the cool metal bars on my back. Keeping my breathing steady I remained calm so my wolf could fix the areas that were bleeding profusely. “Amen, I'm going to die in this cell,” I pondered as I glanced around the room. “You're a born warrior, dear, and you will find a way to escape,” Bria stated firmly in my mind, causing me to grin slightly. Two days have passed and my stomach is eating itself. Concerned about my pup's development, I asked Bria if they were both still within my womb. “Yes,” she muttered weakly as I lay on the straw covered in my dried blood. Smelling the scent of meat, my eyes cracked open, and my mind grew alert at seeing Hazel kneeling beside the cage, holding a large grilled t-bone steak. Swiping it from her I ate it ravenously. “Thank you,” I exclaimed through my full mouth. My strength grew after every swallow, and I took the canteen she held out to me through the bars and took a big swig. “What happened to you? You're covered in blood stains,” she inquired. “Luna stabbed me,” I spat bitterly. Watching Hazel rummage through her pockets my eyes widened at the object she had pulled out. It was a cell key and she was presenting it to me. “Anton told me to give you this and inform you to escape during the night….oh and head toward the southern perimeter because he is patrolling that area tonight,” she said softly. “Really?!” I mumbled emotionally and she nodded. “But I will become a rogue without a pack,” I muttered sullenly and Hazel shrugged. “You're a badass and surely can fight your way into another,” she said encouragingly. Nodding my head slowly I chewed on my bottom lip in thought. “Did you find out anything about Gavin?” I questioned her. “His last name is Montgomery, that's all I got from eavesdropping, and he's a very important individual,” she said softly, and I screwed my face up in bewilderment. “I will repay you for your kindness someday, Hazel, I give you my word,” I asserted and watched her smile. “Thank you, Athena,” she said kindly and informed me that she had to sneak back to the kitchens. “Be careful,” I told her as she hurried out of the building. Palming the key I shouldered the canteen strap and glanced up at the dimming sunlight. It was close to setting so I had a few hours before the moon would rise. “Look like I shall live on and get closer to my revenge,” I growled. “You have other priorities to deal with before seeking your payback,” Bria asserted and I thought of my pups and Mister Montgomery. “You're correct,” I huffed and leaned back as the meal settled in my gut.Gavin Montgomery pov After receiving the call from Veronica I was more anxious to return to see Athena. I hadn't answered her question directly and only reminded the wicked woman that I was going to be married soon to get her off my back. Confused about why she was questioning me about her kitchen worker I had pondered about it the entire evening. The next morning I was sitting in my office and fumbling with the necklace that my jeweler had just finished repairing. “The female didn't lie about who she was; her bloodline is that of a warrior and she is a moonless shifter like yourself. She was not part of the kitchen staff,” my Lycan, Rudik, growled sternly in my mind. “If I hadn't had to return to deal with the rogues that attacked my Silver Moon pack I would have made her my luna queen by now and told her the truth about everything that very night. Hell, I have been searching for my mate since receiving the crown three years ago and well before that,” I muttered. “What are you i
Athena Blackstone pov Keeping a close eye on the darkness outside I grabbed the knife I'd been stabbed with and wrapped it up in a piece of cloth I'd cut from the bottom of my tank shirt to use as a sheath and tucked it into my back pocket. “I guess now is as good a time as any to get the hell out of here,” I surmised as I turned the key in the lock and closed my eyes in relief hearing the lock disengage. “Remember to head south,” Bria growled in my mind. “I know but first I have to get past the pack houses,” I responded as I slowly opened the door of the building and glanced around the outside. Since it was late evening, the coast was pretty clear, so I hurried across the gravel into the forest in the southern direction. My stomach rumbled and I huffed at being hungry once again. “Find Anton. He might have some deer jerky on him that he can give you,” Bria suggested, and I grinned slightly at the suggestion. Running through the trees I stopped and panted. “I'm tiring myself
Gavin Montgomery pov Heading back to my pack, my mind was full of images of Athena during our mating and then the blood-stained straw inside the cell. I couldn't determine what had happened to her and Veronica nor Jordan had been any help. “If they inflicted harm on her I'm vowing to personally end both of their lives,” I asserted with a scowl. My Lycan Rudik agreed with me wholeheartedly but then mentioned Justine… "You must tell the chit the truth and end the farce engagement,” he stated firmly. Lowering my eyes I pinched the bridge of my nose and growled. “I will tell her that I have found my real mate and plan on making her my queen. She will have to decide what she plans to do,” I muttered as I pulled up in front of my house and glanced up at the door. “Her Dad is going to be pissed,” I huffed. “Why, he is not the one who is getting refused to marry,” Rudik growled. My cell phone started ringing and I answered it. Listening to the person on the other line, I grew surpri
Gavin Montgomery pov Grabbing the end of the rope attached to the three prisoners I jokingly said, “Mush,” while whipping it lightly. Informing them of where I was taking them the youngest male turned to eye me incredulously. “You're going to release us?” Shaking my head I explained that I was going to swap them for a female that I assumed his parents had captured. “We're sorry for stealing food from you, sir,” the young man added, and I nodded. “Next time, just come to my house and ask; I will be generous with my stock and donate provisions,” I explained, surprising the young lad. Heading down the main road of my pack village I watched the three of them glancing around in awe. “Have you rogues thought about joining an actual pack? You could ask as long as you contributed your manpower then you would have regular meals and possibly the chance for your very own family,” I asserted. The three prisoners started speaking with each other while I steered them toward the field where
Athena Blackstone pov Seeing my mother’s necklace in Gavin's possession I gasped and reached out for it. “You repaired it for me?!” I sighed in disbelief. “I had the means to the right individual that could restore it to its original splendor, so I did; it was the least I could do for you after that amazing night we shared,” he said with a grin. I smiled back at him as I expressed my thanks. Putting it back on around my neck I looked down at the heart pendent and wiped the moisture collecting in my eyes. “This means a lot, thank you,” I told him truthfully. Glancing at Gavin I thought that perhaps not all men were assholes. “There are others that have proven themselves, like Anton and Seth, the two guards you trained with,” Bria stated in my subconscious. “True, but only Anton still breathes; Seth was ill and passed away,” I muttered sourly, catching Gavin's attention. “What are you mumbling about,” he asked playfully and I told him that I was just thinking out loud. “Um,
Athena Blackstone pov Standing there in the foyer I glanced over at the interior of his home and swallowed nervously. It was the largest house that I had ever been in, and I was feeling a bit overwhelmed. “Let me give you a quick tour before I show you to your room. I have housekeepers that come in the morning and leave after dinner. They are a mother-and-daughter pair. Henry is the mom, and Sally is the daughter. Henry's husband, Dwayne, is my chef. I will introduce you to them in the morning,” he informed me, and I laughed. “Henry?” Grinning, he nodded and explained that her real name was Henrietta, but she preferred just Henry. “I feel that Henry and I will get along fabulously,” I chirped as he brought me into the formal room with a large dining table off in the corner of the big open room. Pointing out to the glass wall, he informed me that there was a wrap-around porch that surrounded the structure. “The kitchen is through that door and another lounge area is back that w
Athena Blackstone pov Having the best sleep in my life, I was unaware of the blue-eyed female glaring down at me with daggers in her big eyes. Rolling over to my side Bria was growling in my subconscious and yelling at me to wake. “Why should I? This bed is like a cloud,” I responded to her in my head. “Just open your eyes, Geesh,” she huffed. Cracking open my eyes a little bit they opened widely at the big eyes blinking at me. The female was leaning over my face and smiling strangely. “Good morning sleepyhead,” Justine said with a child-like enthusiasm. “Why are you here?” I growled only to hear her laugh. “I have decided to befriend you since we both are in love with Gavin,” she announced, causing me to furrow my brow. “Well, I am going to get clothes with him this morning and don't have time to entertain you,” I growled in annoyance, only to see her scrunch her face. “Sorry, but his highness left earlier this morning after we shared breakfast. It was very special,” she s
Athena Blackstone pov “Let me introduce you to my staff,” Gavin offered. “Oh crap, I met Henry already and she was making me breakfast. She's going to think that I'm an asshole for not keeping my word,” I muttered and pulled on his hand to return to the kitchen. When we both entered Justine was at the small table eating with tears streaming down her cheeks. A young female was rubbing her back and glanced at us with sadness. “Did you hear Highness, about her dad,” she asked in a whisper. Gavin nodded and said,” Athena, that is Sally, Henry's daughter and I am going to assume that was your breakfast so we can grab a bite in the village after shopping.” Capturing my elbow with his fingers he steered me away from the emotional mess. Nearing my ear he said, “Justine’s being a drama queen and wasn't even close to her dad. She was closer to mine.” Finding that an odd thing to say I side-eyed him strangely. “You must be close to her to know so much,” I asserted and he shrugged. “We
Athena Blackstone’s pov We left the cottage and were currently on the ATV heading back to the house. I was resting my cheek on Gavin's back as he drove down the dirt path. “Are you excited to get wed?” My wolf asked me. “Sure, I will be official afterward and Gavin's Luna queen,” I answered her. “I just wish Hazel was still here to be my bridesmaid and my dad to hand me off,” I added sullenly. “Ask Anton to hand you off, or Styx and Remy and Linda can be both your bridesmaids,” Bria suggested, and I grinned slightly. As we pulled up to the front of the house, I spied a white and black speckled large owl perched on the roof looking down at us, then immediately got a chill. “Is that Aspen?” I questioned Bria and she hummed before saying possibly. Narrowing my eyes at the feathered creature, I watched it tilt its head, spread its wings, and fly off toward the forest. “Is he able to transform into anything?” “Yes, he has that gift from his ancestors,” Bria sighed and I huffed
Athena Blackstone’s pov Waking up suddenly, I peeked over at Gavin, still sleeping soundly, and pinched my mouth from laughing at his mouth open as he slept. Moving my legs carefully from underneath him I patted my bare feet to the hot spring and grinned slightly as I lowered myself back into the hot water. I rested my elbows on the edge while I submerged my lower half. Closing my eyes as the warmth filled my leg and butt muscles I smiled at hearing Gavin beginning to rise. “You look like a siren awaiting a sailor to entice,” he said sleepily. Snickering, I told him that he was the only semen I wished for. “Hmm, interesting choice of words, temptress,” he laughed and rolled on his stomach, facing me from the bed. Looking over at him I raised my index finger and beckoned for him to join me. “If my woman wishes I will come,” he mumbled and quickly jumped into the deep pool. Watching his head bobbing up with his eyes glowing I inhaled sharply when he submerged and moved purpos
Gavin Montgomery's pov I had been overjoyed about bringing Athena to the cottage until Gideon appeared. I knew instinctively that it was about the high king in one regard or another, and when my mate ran off to the balcony, I was told what brought him. “Aspen cannot have your daughter. You need to give up your throne, hide, and keep her away from him at all costs…besides, I think the female could potentially be mine,” Gideon asserted, and I looked at him with disbelief. “I'm not going to give my crown to my eldest. I don't know which one of the twins came first, and either way, the other one will feel cheated. Plus, I want Athena to be given the title of queen officially. She deserves it,” I huffed. Rubbing his eyes the assassin was gritting his teeth. “Aspen is a cruel and crazy fuck with too high of expectations! He will break your child’s spirit and not allow her to become the woman she's meant to become,” he stressed firmly and I gave him a stoic glare. “It's true, Aspen n
Athena Blackstone's pov The following morning I was in a daze. Nothing seemed real as I watched my friend Hazel’s wrapped body get consumed by the flames of the pyre. I didn't sob like yesterday but tears rolled down my cheek. My thoughts were completely void of Aspen and the white wolf I had seen, and my body wasn't giving me a warning, so I just focused on what was happening before me. “She had finally gotten her happiness and it was taken from her,” I think to Bria. “It happens to all of us, some sooner than others. That's why you must live your life to the fullest and be happy,” she said softly. Seeing my mate standing with Nick, I noticed that he was looking at me with concern, and I curled my lip slightly to let him know that I was okay. “Is he still planning on going to the mountain after this?” I questioned my wolf. Silently for a moment, Bria replied with a simple yeah. Sighing deeply I hoped that it would bring me a little bit of happiness. “Life cannot
Athena Blackstone's pov Feeling as if my entire world was crumbling around me I was thankful for Anton. When we reached Gavin's, he was wiping his eyes and said, “Stay alive, boss lady. I can't lose you too,” he said emotionally, and I nodded before giving him a motherly hug. “Thanks for bringing me home,” I mumbled softly and turned to see Gavin standing on the front porch. Shaking my head at him, his eyes filled with grief. “Is Nick alright?” “No, he is hurting,” I replied and he sighed. “Go inside and eat. You missed dinner, and the pup needs nutrients. I'm going to go help Nick. I'll return later,” he said firmly and I nodded as I stepped up the stairs. “Are you going to be okay,” he asked me in concern. Peering up at him with my reddened eyes and damp cheeks I shrugged. “I will manage. I've got family, but Nick has no one but his pup. He needs you now more than I,” I said solemnly. Kissing my forehead he told me that he loved me before rushing off to help his
Athena Blackstone's pov An hour or so later, my family was all gathered in the living room, and Remy hugged me tightly when she first arrived. She could tell instantly that I was bothered by something and asked me to tell her. “We will in a moment,” I told her sullenly. Gavin exhaled deeply and then stood up to address them all. “Your mom and I had an issue at the King's Ball and unfortunately had to save our asses by signing our unborn pup over to King Aspen,” he said firmly, and Styx visually shuddered. “That's insanity; he is part demon, werewolf, fae, and related to Ormguddina, the snake witch, along with the high demon Mammon, who can shift into anything and is extremely dangerous,” he growled, and I eyed him, then my mate. Swallowing uncomfortably, I growled, “I knew he was odd, but it was either the contract, or he was going to kill your father and keep me for nefarious reasons.” My daughter side-eyed me with sadness and reached her hand out to me. Taking it I looked
Athena Blackstone's pov The helicopter ride home didn't even faze me. My brain was occupied with the pup that was growing within me. “Athena, he would have killed us both. First me, then you eventually,” Gavin stated. Shaking my head I huffed and growled, “So we offered up our daughter like a sacrifice. Is her life less important than ours?!” I was crestfallen as a mother and a warrior. I'd failed and eyed Gavin critically. “Perhaps he should not be my mate. I could have been the Goddess’s warrior and not had to deal with any of this failure,” I thought bitterly as a tear rolled down my cheek. Seeing me crying Gavin wrapped his arm around me and pressed my head against his chest. “It's better to face things together, Athena and the grass isn't always better on the other side,” Bria growled in my head. Rolling my eyes I told her that didn't make any sense and continued to drown in my frustration. Once we finally landed, Dwayne wasn't there to pick us up so I just s
Athena Blackstone's pov Time seemed to crawl by, and my anxiety over our fate increased with each second that passed. Watching Gavin taking a piss in the same corner that I had, I sat while resting my forearms on my knees, growing impatient. “When is that dick going to get here?” I growled sourly in frustration. Returning to my side Gavin said, “He is seeing his guest off since it's the end of the ball and also probably dealing with Lyra’s corpse.” Frowning, I side-eyed him and said, “Sorry you had to do that.” “Do what?” “Kill your former lover,” I muttered and he shook his head and laughed sarcastically. “She was pushing me, and I warned her to stop. If anything, the blame falls on both her and Aspen,” he asserted, and I nodded. Exhaling deeply I huffed and buried my head between my knees. Gavin placed his hand on my back and rubbed me for comfort. “I'm happy that you agreed to marry me,” he mumbled softly near my neck. Lifting my head I furrowed my brow.
Athena Blackstone's pov Once we reached the outside Gavin said to slow down and act casual. “Guests come out to have intimate connections. We just need to behave as such,” he panted as he squeezed my hand and pulled me closer. As the guards rushed past, he captured my lips in a toe-curling kiss that had me growing instantly damp with desire. Grinning against my mouth he asked, “I can smell your lust. Should we go to a hidden spot for a quick mate?” Running my free hand over his swollen crotch, I giggled and nodded, wanting nothing more than to have him inside of me. Lifting me in his arms, he ran through the garden, and I wrapped my arms around his neck. Peeking over his shoulder, I noticed that the guard's presence had waned, and he soon slowed his gate. Stopping at a small walled gazebo I raised my brow at him. “Have you, um, done things here before?” Shaking his head he said, “No, this is Aspen’s. No one enters this area.” Grinning smugly at him I said, “Seems like an i
