Athena Blackstone pov

When it grew late Hazel sighed and said she was going to head to bed.

I told her goodnight as I shuffled myself to my room and plopped down on my bed.

“Maybe he doesn't want me back,” I murmured and Bria huffed at me.

“Just sleep, today has been a long one," she said softly.

Closing my eyes I tossed and turned most of the night. My head was full of what happened with Gavin when I had seen him last and how I had accused him of doing the unthinkable with Justine.

Waking in the morning I felt more emotionally drained than the day before.

Going to the kitchen I heard Hazel and Anton talking in muffled voices to another person who sounded like Nick.

Hurrying my steps, I opened the door and then stopped to see an older female with silver gray hair and a tan wrinkle-free face standing in my kitchen, looking distraught.

“Excuse me, who are you?”

She turned to me with a curious gaze and said, “You must be Athena Blackstone, the daughter of Gwen Blackstone.”

Athena Blackstone pov “There's an old rundown guard shack up there on the high ridge. Head there and hunker down. There's electricity and running water in it along with a bit of supplies. I will be up there when things get settled here,” Anton continued before waving goodbye and heading back out the front door. “Should I inform Nick and Hazel?” I asked her and she shook her head as she pointed to the kitchen door where Nick was peeking out at us. “If you got her, I will care for Hazel, on my end,” he stated, and I nodded. “Let's go,” I asserted and headed out of my house. Glancing up at the gray mountain I gritted my molars as Josephine as I broke through the treeline and headed further north. “Tell me about this Chad Smith. I want to be inside of his head so I will know how to defeat him,” I growled over my shoulder to her. Chuckling, she shook her head and said, “Alone, he's just a tiny rat, but with his deep pockets he can afford the best of the best.” Furrowing my

Athena Blackstone pov The day ticked by without a visit from Anton, and as we prepared for the night, I helped Josephine get her small bed readied. Hearing heavy footsteps outside, my head tilted and I instinctively brought my finger to my lips to quiet her. “Someone is walking around outside,” I whispered and saw her eyes widen. Instructing her to go stand in the corner of the one-room dwelling, I tiptoed to the flimsy door and cracked it open a little. I was met with a pair of yellow-red eyes peering down at me, and I slammed the door shut. “Oh shit!” I screeched as the door flung open, knocking me back, causing me to land on my ass upon the wood floor. I knew instantly who he was. There was no mistaking his flame-colored eyes. “You're on the Moon Council, Sir, and aren't for hire,” I shouted out to the mountain of a man known as Gideon Landers. Josephine covered her gasp at seeing the Moon Council's assassin come stepping inside our refuge. “Who said that I was h

Gavin Montgomery pov “Henry, Henry, wake up,” Derek Blackstone growled at my dad, who was sleeping soundly on the infirmary bed across the room I was also in. Cracking my eyes open, I saw a huge man standing next to Derek with yellow-red eyes looking stern. “What is going on,” I wheezed out tiredly. Seeing Athena’s dad frowning as he looked over at me I felt Rudik stirring within me. “Athena is here, Your Highness; she had her pups, he muttered, and I raised my brow. “I'm waiting for the but, so tell me,” I growled. Derek gestured to the stranger. I narrowed my eyes as he headed toward me. Realizing it was Gideon Lander, my eyes widened as he got closer. “She was hemorrhaging, and I had to give her a small conversion bite along with some of my blood. Your pups were taken by two individuals,” he informed me regretfully. My hands clenched. “Did she know them?” Nodding he said, “Logan and Justine. She asked me to help, but I know nothing about them, so I couldn't provide my s

Athena Blackstone pov Our matching heartbeat was a comforting feeling and I inhaled Gavin's intoxicating scent deeply. “I asked my dad to borrow some sturdy clothes for us both to wear from one of your guards. I don't think that your kingly garments will last long for what we're about to do,” I mumbled softly into his ear as he held me in his arms. Feeling him chuckle I eyed him. “Athena Blackstone, you are my mate, Luna, and Queen, your state of attire will change, especially when you are in my bed,” he teased me playfully, and I screwed my face at him. “I'm a warrior, sir! Unless you allow me to become your warrior queen then I will have to reconsider,” I asserted. “Don't give him a hard time, dear,” Bria whined in my mind, causing me to pinch my lips and snort. Raising his hand as he thought, he smiled and said, “If you promise to wear a dress for our wedding then I will allow it.” My eyes widened in merriment but then narrowed at him. “Was that your marriage proposal?!”

Athena Blackstone pov “She's holding one of our pups,” I stated in aggravation as Gavin held me back from rushing out at her. “I know but move your eyes and see the rogues that are there. You're experiencing tunnel vision, Athena and not seeing the danger,” he warned me. “Where is our second pup?!” I growled bitterly and his creased brow glanced at the tent. “He better be in there, or I'm going to be ripping off heads,” he said firmly, and I huffed, telling him that I was going to do that anyway. Gideon was standing there listening to us both and shaking his head. He suddenly vanished then reappeared with the bundle Justine had been holding, surprising us both. Handing my pup to me I pulled the blanket back and gasped at the adorable infant. “There was no other infant in the tent,” Gideon informed us and my brow furrowed. Justine was screaming in shock while she turned around the area where she stood. “Where did it go?” She growled frantically. “We need our othe

Athena Blackstone pov Pleading with her to keep bugging Rudik as I wished to know my dad's condition, she remained quiet. “I just found my father and I don't want to lose him too,” I sighed and looked down at Azel as he started fussing. “Feed him,” my wolf asserted and I balked in return. “With What, Bria? I'm in a basement!” Feeling her rolling eyes, she growled, “Your breasts still carry milk since they haven't dried up yet. Give him your nipple.” Glancing around at the scattered pack members I turned away from them in the chair and lifted my t-shirt. “I hope the little fella knows what to do,” I muttered as I moved his tiny mouth to my nipple. When he latched on and began to nurse I cheered triumphantly in my head. Feeling a tap on my back I glanced over to a small young female handing me a sandwich. “My mom said to give you this, Highness,” she said softly. Taking it from her tiny hand I grinned slightly and said,” Thank you, little one. Let your mom know th

Athena Blackstone pov Drying my eyes I sighed and said, “We must find our daughter and inform the Gray Mountain pack of their Alpha’s passing.” “I'm sure Luna will make it known on her way out,” Gideon asserted and passed us through the open doorway. Gavin peered down at me oddly and asked me where my necklace was. Shaking my head I told him that it wasn't meant for me only to confuse him. Resentment filled me briefly about who I could have been, but once I glanced up at my mate's face, I realized that I had made the right choice. “Just know you're a lucky fucker,” I informed him and gestured for us to go into the lobby. Chuckling he said, “I do feel rather grand.” Side-eyeing him I shook my head and said, “We must find Henry and ask her about Sally. I think she's in cahoots with Justine and her father, Chad.” Giving me a concentrated glance as he mulled over my words, he hissed, “Henry and Dwayne left to go stay with other relatives; hmm, not suspicious at all. Athena Blackstone pov Rushing toward the frightening-looking man holding the knife in Chad’s gut, I jumped up and kicked him in his chest with both of my feet, causing him to stumble backward with his knife still in his hand. I quickly spun in the air and dropped to my feet before the blonde-haired man. Oblivious to the rifles pointed in my direction I grabbed his robe and lifted him to face me. Hearing the guards moving in my direction didn't faze me or my mission. I barely registered their guns raised in my direction. “Where is she!” I demanded with a snarl. My eyes were glowing dangerously at him needing answers. Chad Smith looked at me in utter confusion. “What in the fuck are you talking about?” “My baby girl that your daughter Justine and her mate Logan brought to you that you intend to raise and breed with, you sick son of a bitch,” I growled. Shaking his head he said, “I have disowned my daughter and haven't seen her since…Oh shit, you're the female the king re

Athena Blackstone pov “May I hold her,” Styx asked Anton. “Wash your hands and face first; you might scare her with all that blood,” he replied sternly, making me cough on my held laughter. Nodding his head, Styx pointed to the inside of the house, and Gavin told him to go ahead and use the kitchen sink. “He is no more bloodier than you, Anton. You shouldn't be so cruel,” I commented as he held Remy. “Got to keep the old fart on his toes,” he smirked and I wagged my finger at him. “You know there's a possibility that neither of you is Remy’s mate,” I informed him so that if it became true it would be less of an issue. Anton eyed me strangely and snorted, “Bullshit, boss.” I tilted my head and shrugged as he lifted her to look at her tiny face. “She came straight up to me. Didn't you princess,” He said with a grin. I was gobsmacked at seeing her nodding her head. Side-eyeing Gavin, I asked him if he knew if they would be talking soon. Thinking about it he said

Athena Blackstone pov Changing back to my normal clothing, I passed by the full-length mirror and caught my reflection. I stopped mid-step and turned to look more closely at the necklace around my neck. Lifting my fingers to it, I creased my brow, studying the stone. “Huh, that's odd, “ I muttered. Seeing the heart-shaped stone giving off iridescent colors when I had always thought it was a diamond but this certainly wasn't a diamond. “It's a Rainbow Moonstone, the Moon Goddess’s Stone. She must have altered the necklace,” Bria informed me. “Wish you could tell me why, wolf,” I growled sourly and continued back downstairs to meet with Gavin. Getting a rush of adrenaline I stood at the bottom of the stairs and rubbed at my temple. “The mercenaries are going to join Styx?” I murmured and looked up to see Gideon and Gavin standing before me. “Good, I had hoped he could convince them to join our pack,” Gavin chuckled and glanced at Gideon. Nodding the assassin agreed. “The war wi

Athena Blackstone pov Getting bombarded with information, I rubbed my forehead, and Gavin asked me if I was alright. “Yeah, I am processing a lot of amazing stuff, but I don't understand how or why,” I mumbled softly and eyed Gideon, who had paused up ahead. Poking his broad back to get his attention, I crossed my arms, waiting for him to give me his attention. He glanced over at me and asked what. “Tell me why I'm suddenly inundated with all this information to fight and engage in battle,” I asserted, no longer fearful of the dreaded Moon Council assassin. Pinching his bottom lip he huffed and finally said, “I don't know. I was just asked to return the necklace to your neck. Perhaps the Goddess has plans for you.” My heart started to ache and I shook my head. “My future is with Gavin so she's barking up the wrong tree!” “Hush, female, I stopped because there's a group of rogues with mercenaries ahead in the trees,” he warned, but I watched Styx treading ahead undeterred. Athena Blackstone pov “What are they discussing,” I asked Gavin and he shook his head before pulling me aside. “I feel like you should play your part when we arrive at the home of Veronica and Jordan. I want you to wear a gown instead of the guard clothing you normally wear,” he said uncomfortably and I screwed up my face while giving him a sour look in return. “How am I supposed to fight in a damn dress?” I balked. Holding my upper arms he pinched his mouth and stared at me. “I don't care what you wear around here but I think you dressed up for your position will strike a nerve with both Veronica and her horrible mother. Don't you wish to rub it in that you're the queen and not her, eh?” Narrowing my eyes at him my lip started to curl upward. “I suppose that would be fun, but I will rip the dress off myself if I need to attack, so be sure to grab some pants just in case,” I muttered reluctantly, making him smile and kiss my forehead. Leaning over me he opened the kitche

Athena Blackstone pov I opened my eyes suddenly in a complete panic with the sun beating down on my face, and I sat up in bed. Gavin shuffled himself toward me and muttered incoherently. He was still sleeping. “Did you hear the pups at all last night?” I asked him in concern. Blinking his eyes, he yawned and said, “No, I was knocked out and slept like the dead.” Making an annoyed sound I scrambled from the bed and rushed into the adjoining room. Glancing over the mattress I moved the pillows I had used as barricades and found no pups. “They are both GONE!” I shouted out. Gavin ordered me to stop just as I was about to run from the bedroom. “Dress yourself! Do not run around in the buff when other males are staying here!” Snatching the robe from his hand I growled sourly as I slipped it on and tore off down the hall. Scurrying down the stairs I saw Henry dusting in the living room. “Have you seen the pups?!” Nodding, she simply pointed upward and said, “Your friend Anton he

Athena Blackstone pov After showing Henry, she was twirling Remy around the kitchen, and said, “I'm so happy for you and Gavin. Your pups are adorable! Um, where is his Highness?” Telling her he was in a meeting with the mercenary Alpha, her eyes widened. “Do I need to prepare another plate for supper?” Shrugging, I told her that she could just encase, and she nodded as she handed me back Remy. “Let me get two bottles for the pups so you can feed them while I finish supper. They will have full tummies and allow you to enjoy your meal in peace,” she said softly and I thanked her. After feeding them both I changed their cloth diapers and laid them down on either side of me on the couch. “What is taking my mate so long,” I huffed and sank back into the cushions. “And what about Gideon and Anton? They're searching for the pup that's here,” I muttered in irritation. The lack of sleep over the past few days was catching up with me, and I was slowly drifting off until Gavin started

Athena Blackstone pov “How did he find her so quickly,” I questioned sullenly. “Styx has a direct line to the rogues, and once he got the whereabouts of your pup, he went there immediately and demanded her return. At least that's what the couple told me,” Gideon said. Rubbing my eyes I exhaled deeply and said, “He believes that she is his mate. How can he assume that without her reaching her maturity,” I growled. “Maybe he felt a connection with you and figured that your daughter would be his,” the assassin said reluctantly, causing me to glare at him. Henry, Dwayne, and their daughter Sally were approaching us, and Henry was wringing her hands nervously. Shoving her daughter forward she told her to tell us, gaining both our attention. “I'm giving my resignation, I will be working with another female starting immediately,” Sally stated firmly. I looked at Henry, and she waved her hands before herself and said that she and her husband were staying. Nodding, I side-eyed Gavin,

Athena Blackstone pov Giving him a raised brow I leaned toward my mate and asked him if he was jealous of the younger man. Snorting at me he growled, “Certainly not!” Nodding, I said, “Don't be; Anton was one of my top students. I used to train the guards at my former pack and taught him since he was a youngster.” Grinning like a goof, Anton said, “Yeppers, that's who I am! Athena's TOP student.” Rolling his eyes Gavin apologized for thinking we were a thing and asked me if he was going to transfer to our pack. Shrugging I mumbled, “Perhaps you can ask him if he wants to.” Seeing Anton’s head bobbing up and down I giggled. “Guess that's a yes, which is fantastic since Hazel is mates with your Beta. I will have all my dear friends close to me,” I said cheerfully but then frowned. “Can we find Justine? Could she still be camped at the same location?” I asked Gavin as we continued toward his pack home. “Hey assassin, can you transfer yourself to people by seeing their

Athena Blackstone pov Exhausted, I rested my head against my stretched-out arms that were hanging by the chain. I was surprised by Styx remaining wide awake at the table drinking straight from a bottle of liquor he had gotten from a chest tucked in the corner of the shabby room. “I've sent off the ransom note for your sake, or your head will be on a spike next to Mister Smith’s,” he snickered. “Oh, you're fucking hilarious,” I muttered, bringing his narrowed dark eyes toward me. Glaring back at him I asked him what? “What's it like having a mate,” he asked me bluntly, surprising me. Shrugging I pinched my lips together as I contemplated my answer. “Different from what my mother said it was. She was a deeply devoted warrior prodigy and despised men,” I said softly. Nodding his head, he exhaled deeply and said, “I have yet to meet mine, but I'm certain that they would find me hideous if they ever met me.” “Your mate will find you handsome no matter what but your line
