I apologise to Councillor Steven and his wife, Bella, as I guide Emma out of the grand hall, moving us through the house as I stride purposefully, I lead us out to the gardens, and then I guide her to the fountain we used to spend more of our time than we were supposed to.

"Luca?" Emma whispers at my change in direction. I think she's keeping her voice low so as not to betray the emotion flitting through her, but I see her eyes as she appraises the fountain.

They're wide and hurt. Does she think I'm purposely bringing her back to the place we first fell in love to hurt her?

I drop to one knee as she walks a little ahead of me, her hand dipping inside the pool below the fountain as she swipes at the water in much the same manner as she used to.

I snag the chain around my neck, breaking it in the process.

The ring falls into my palm as I pocket the broken chain, intent on keeping it in the hopes that breaking it will bring us a new life together.

Why have I brought her out here to where

EmmaI walk through the evening like a zombie, the ring a stark reminder that I'm only here because my father and Luca's father deemed it a good business deal to tie our families together using us as collateral.Once, I would have been perfectly happy to be standing beside Luca, but I don't feel like his equal anymore, and that doesn't bode well for me.My finger still smarts, the stinging giving way to swelling around the metal he placed on, knowing it would never be removed again. For some reason unknown to me, I feel somewhat honoured he would give me a ring I had always fantasised about owning and in the face of admitting that he would never let me go by ensuring the ring would never leave my body again unless I were dead and they severed my finger to claim back the heirloom that now belongs on my ring finger.I hadn't known his grandfather designed the ring to hurt the one he loved. I hadn't expected that, but it doesn't seem unsurprising. Men in the mafia seem to have dark souls

The kiss takes me back to a simpler time when we would sneak kisses like this at every opportunity while believing our young love could get us through anything. His hands cinch at my waist as he picks me up, moving us to the kitchen counter on the island not far from us. My dress rides my thighs, allowing access to spread my legs where he chooses to settle."Fuck, bambina," he murmurs against my neck as he nips, licks and sucks at the skin that's on fire from his attention."Luca...""Shh, don't tell me to stop, bambina.""Please—," I pray, beg; I don't know why I fucking said that word.Am I encouraging him?Do I want this?Could we...?"Put her down; you're in public," my papa's voice booms around us, the distant smell of sweat and whisky infiltrating my senses as Luca pulls back, only to rest his forehead against my own."Mr Rossi, to what do we owe this fucking pleasure?" Luca growls at my father, stepping back only enough to angle his body to see my father standing at the door we

LucaI've always been taught to face my problems with stealth and indifference, so I have no clue why I ignored Emma for four days, avoiding her as if she were the plague.Besides the times I watch her sleep, we lack crossing paths, but even so, tonight's unplanned dinner with my parents throws a spanner in the works. They called not an hour ago, telling me they would be turning up within the hour. I've agonised over whether to keep the dinner between the three of us or invite my wife-to-be.I decided upon the latter, though I wonder whether that's a good idea or not, considering Anna has whined that Emma continued asking where I was these last few days. I hate to think she would out my behaviour to my parents.Whatever, it's not like I have a choice in the matter of marrying her, but her father's hushed words had me wondering what type of hold he had over her decisions and exactly how far she would go to make her 'papa' happy.Did she really think I wouldn't eavesdrop on their conver

"Appearances," Emma whispered beside me as she walked into the dining room with an emerald evening gown on as if she were attending a dinner at an event she didn't want to attend. But her feet are bare, precisely as they should be in her home."Mr Moretta, Mrs Moretta, it's so lovely to have you over for dinner," Emma greets them quietly, confidently."You look beautiful, Emma, but please just use our names," my mother grins at Emma with that warmth she's always given Emma."What's so important to call for dinner out of the air like this?" I ask, walking to sit beside Emma instead of taking my usual pew at the north head of the table."There was an attempt on my life this morning," my father admits. Those worry lines deepen as he watches me brace the back of Emma's chair with a tight fist of annoyance. The timing couldn't have been more inconvenient if they tried. If I hadn't stopped myself, I would have sworn my hand would have entangled itself in Emma's long blonde locks to grasp fo

EmmaI'm unsure why I'm upset that Luca will be gone for at least forty-eight hours or more; it's not like we spend every waking minute with one another in some loved-up bliss before our seemingly fake wedding. The thing is, since he put this contraption on my finger, we've spent less than half an hour with one another, and twenty-eight minutes of that was at the dinner table with his parents.Unfortunately, I was tasked with getting rid of his parents on top of the emotional turmoil that he was walking into an ambush with a man who had already tried to kill his father because that's what this is, isn't it?An ambush. My training makes me question all of their sanity, but right here and now, I have his mother to contend with."Take a walk with me?" She asks, leaving her husband's side to grab for my elbow in encouragement.I don't point out that I have no shoes; I know it's a ploy to give the two Moretta men time to talk.Who am I to turn down their need for privacy?"Sure."She walks

"I'm sure you've seen his mood swings firsthand, and you felt the slick sweat covering his skin. He was lost after my husband had you sent away. He searched for a new way to fill the hole you've always been able to fill for him. But you must open your eyes to see you were too in love, far too soon. A teenage boy is reckless at the best of times, but throw in the weight of the crown that would one day be bestowed upon him and then a girl, one he fell irrevocably in love with so early on that his life started and ended with you from the age of nine..." she chuckles humorously. "I think you'll agree that you would only have been a distraction, a target to have been taken, knowing the young Moretta would die a thousand deaths only to save the girl he saved once before. Many call it childish love; my husband and I chose to call it stupidity of the heart.""E allora, avete deciso tutti il nostro destino come se non avessimo voce in capitolo nel nostro destino? LucaI haven't endeavoured to pack much because I don't plan on being away for more than a few days. Still, I ensure I have one spare set of black combats and enough straps to hold more guns to my body than ever before. I have a vest to ensure I don't get shot in vital places that might well help me bleed to an untimely death. My legs and arms will have to be sacrificed, and if they decide to shoot to kill, then my pretty face is of no use to me in the face of death. The importance of this kill strikes through me, making me cognisant of the fact that an attempt on my father's life has not happened in a long, long while.Perhaps not since he was gearing up to taking the throne from his father. Is the timing coincidental?I think not.I'm just slinging the bag over my shoulder, having given myself the pep talk to walk out of this house, intent on not returning until my charge is complete when Emma enters our bedroom. Her eyes are wide, her cheeks flushed as if she were only warming up f

Reaching for her ring, I turn her palm up, stroking the date sixteen years ago when she had almost drowned out of fear of falling into less than eight inches of water. It would have been so easy for her to be able to save herself, but she panicked so much that she failed the only natural instinct we are born with. Survival. That day, she failed to do the only thing our brain knows from the moment we take our first breath, just like she's panicking now.But what she doesn't know is I'm the snake. I slide in and slip out without so much as a batted eyelid. This man will be dead before tomorrow and, if not then, the early hours of the morning after. He doesn't know what's coming for him; he doesn't understand the gravity of his treachery, nor does he expect the son of the man he chose to execute to avenge such a decision. My father stated that it was a stupid move to have me fly out there, ready to kill him. And that's why he won't be expecting it. Everyone expects us to keep our securit

BiancaSo we're in hiding, great, except for the fact that there's no food or much water and only one bedroom come living area, leaving us with the only option but to share space with one another. That first hour was filled with tense silence. We sat in a circle, staring at one another as we judged each other.I guess none of us had a clue of what to say, leaving the only sounds coming from Alexandra as she hissed annoyance at being tied to another chair while simultaneously trying to release herself. She couldn't, of course. Sven ensured she wasn't able to breathe, let alone escape. Soon, though, the trivia of being trapped down here had me wandering around the space as I paced back and forth in an attempt to kill my anxiety. And my movement had first Sven agitated and then Alexandra."You'll have to surface at some point; they'll be waiting," she tells me. Or at least she looks to me as she speaks. It's as if she's solely talking to me, yet she never actually addressed me. Anxiet

She's so wrong."I don't care; I accept them. I accept all of you, Bee.""Why?" she asks in a quiet and frightened tone. Her disbelief is flavoursome, and I hate it. I think long and hard about my answer, but it comes down to one thing. "Because I can," I tell her with a look that I hope transpires everything I'm not saying.Because I love you should have been the words that left my mouth, but it's the wrong time to say such things, especially when the feeling is so new and appeared so quickly that even I'm tripping over this emotion I've run from all my life."I'm ugly, horribly ugly inside, Niko.""And I'll love those ugly parts just the same; now, do you want to talk about it or save that conversation for later?"She looks ast

NikoSven and I meticulously strip what little clothing Alexandra had on, but we find nothing that could account for a tracking device.Even so, we check every crevice of her body and still come up empty-handed before replacing the clothing to give her some sense of decency. If I'm honest, I tackle the task with indifference, but in honesty, I feel sick to my stomach doing such a task. At first, she shook like a leaf, but her true identity showed itself when her quivering lip turned into a malicious smile when we realised she didn't have an evident tracking device."Perhaps you should look elsewhere," she sneered at me with enough malice to prove she's gone entirely fucking rogue. This is not the woman I remember; she sure isn't the loved-up woman who followed Mitchels every word. "I should kill you now, leave your dead body for them to find. Perhaps that would leave the message that I'm not to be played with," I hiss back with equal fervour, but I knew I was only playing into her g

Continued:My entrance is dramatic, and I twist my ankle. Barely containing the yelp of pain as hands steady me. "Careful," Niko warns as his hands grab my shoulders. Righting me, he strokes my cheek and kisses my forehead. Then he leaves me, moving for Alexandra, who is sitting on one of the kitchen stalls in the middle of the kitchen. I watch Niko closely tie her to the stall, ensuring her hands and legs are immobile.I'm itching to turn every light off and cut out all light for anyone searching for something to guide their way here, to me.The seconds tick by until he's finished, and I slap every light switch to swamp us in darkness when he begins to stand."Bee?" He questions me as the house falls into darkness. The silence around us stretches out only as far as Alexandra's laugh allows. She knows, god, she knows that they're coming. "Isaw lightout at sea," I whisper to Niko. "She's guiding them here. I'm sure of it!" I tell him desperately, knowing he probably won't believe m

BiancaThings are escalating so quickly, and I'm at a complete loss for words. I don't know what to do with the information safely stowed away in my bra. It is burning my skin. It's begging me to reveal it, knowing deep down that we need to acknowledge the fact that a Densel was seemingly working against one of their own with the likes of another man's wife, who just so happens to be one of the top three rulers of our kind.I'm sure Niko could make more heads over the tail of it himself, but I don't want to give away the game for Alexandra only to win with the upper hand. Because she knows, she knows what Benji was doing there, and she might be the fucking key for the downfall headed our way. Now, whether Benji is the one she is hinting at or if she is hinting at Mitchel is above me right now.Anxiety rolls through me, and a sixth sense begs me to accept the truth. They were working together, but for what and why? And more importantly, who?So, I defer. I accused her of cheating des

Continued: Sighing and gritting my teeth in annoyance, I begin to unbutton my shirt in a hurry. Shifting it off my shoulders, I hold it out to Alexandra with a stern look of annoyance, willing her to take it without saying thank you. Sven chuckles from the back of the boat. He's far enough away that his chuckle comes at me quietly, but I hear it anyway as I make eye contact with him. He never did appreciate having morals. "Thank you," Alexandra eagerly takes my shirt, wrapping it around herself, proving she was trying her damned hardest to conceal the fact she was indeed very cold. I train my gaze away from her lack of attire, aware that my staring might well upset Bianca, and I far from want to create that distance between us. Not after we've come so far in our relationship. "I think you need to start talking, Alexandra," I finally demand with a low undertone, my voice as menacing as I can make it. I want to instil as much fear as I can to successfully seek the answers I need. Bu

Niko The short ride to the private dock is tense and, quite frankly, unnerving as I try to remain stoic and quiet after saving Alexandra and nearly losing Bianca in the process. I want to ask Bianca exactly what happened and how she came to be in that room alone with no one holding her there as I thought I'd find, but I cannot fathom asking these questions in the earshot of Sven, and perhaps even Alexandra. I need to judge whether the pair of them are safe, and I definitely need to gauge whether Alexandra is a threat. How did she know that Bianca would be in that room, and would she tell me if she had planned to abduct her alongside the Densels? I'm sure I've mentioned it before, but the Densel dabble in illegal requirements of girls, even by the mafia's sordid morals and not one family knows the coordinates of any one of their bases. Most girls, if not all, disappear without a trace after they are handed over to the Densels. It's quite literally as if they vanish into thin air

BiancaNiko executed his plan very promptly leading me and grabbing the girl as we compiled out of the small door that led us back here in the first place. But things don't continue as expectedly when I start to veer off from Niko with the encouragement of a hand that surely isn't his."Let go of me," I hiss in pain as I'm dragged by the wrist through the crowd of people. The hand holding my wrist is cold, and unlike Niko's warm and inviting touch, I recoil very quickly from the individual leading me away. I try to turn away using my weight as a tool to pivot in the direction I want to head in, my aim is to head back to the group of people that are now lingering outside the door. Back to Niko, back to safety but my feet lose purchase on the floor, my body being lifted quite easily as if I weighed nothing. The strong smell of aftershave fills my nostrils, a stark reminder of him, of Don Densel."Let me go!
