Despite wanting nothing more than to climb back in bed with Emma, I chose to stop by the garden, where our men are training with one another, as I would expect them to.

I noted them as I walked down the hall, stopping to stare out the window as I marvelled at how good they were becoming in hand-to-hand combat. I have Emma to thank for that. Just when I thought they couldn't improve, she showed up to prove me wrong.

Backtracking through the house, I chose to stand off to the side and watch in the shadows, not really piquing anyone's interest nor imposing on their training session. My pain threshold would not hold up anyway.

I'm disgusted to say after a while; I find Bianca in the thick of my men doing precisely what Emma might have been doing if she weren't in bed, exhausted from the last few days of hell.

She, too, moves just as fluidly as Emma does, leaving me with no doubt that they were trained by the same person. I find myself hovering closer to marvel at the fact that though even

EmmaMy heart wasbeating in my throat when I woke up to no Luca beside me. After last night, I thought he might sleep in with me.Rolling to my side, I see the clock reads seven-thirty. It's late, yet I'm bone tired and ache like hell.Sitting up, I find Niko sitting in the armchair, watching me intently as he leans back in the chair with his legs spread. Both elbows are on the armrests, his fingers pressed to his lips."Niko," I fright, holding my chest that hurts with how rapidly the beat of my heart is racing."I'm sorry, I didn't mean to scare you," he shrugs. "Are you okay? I know you said you were yesterday, but Luca's not here now; you don't have to lie," he exclaims calmly."I'm fine, Niko... just as I had said yesterday.""Good, that's good," he trails off.Cinching the bedsheet against me, I do nothing but stare at him as he stares back. Something in his eyes seems depleted, as if he's received some bad news that's set him off to hate life today.I want to ask him about it,

"Luca, you're hurting her," I tell him imploringly. "Let her go.""She can get out of it," he fires back immediately, but his eyes change. They're not dark orbs of evil as they were only moments before. Now, they're soft, an emotion he seems to reserve for me, even if his actions fail to mirror his internal feelings."Can't you, Bianca?" Luca asks her teasingly. She grits her teeth, batting his arm away before using her elbow to hit him in the stomach. She has him falling to his knees with a knee to his groin. And it's then I see his hatred for her again. Why does he hate her? "See, no harm," he tells me angrily. My eyes bounce between them, and I know then I need to get her away from here where she'll be safe."Bianca?" I call anxiously."Just training, Emm," she lies, smiling to me. But I can tell it's fake, and there's definitely an element of needing to escape in her eyes.Luca grabs for her, pulling her to him as he settles her under his arm. He's still livid but puts on a show

EmmaIt's two in the morning, and I find myself standing in Luca's office just before the break of dawn. Startled from my sleep, he pulled me from our bed to attend an urgent meeting he called in the dead of night.Niko and Mass are seated across from us, their expressions mirroring my own alarm at being summoned at such an ungodly hour."What the fuck is this?" Niko shoots a sharp, skeptical look across to Luca, his evident disdain for his boss simmering just below the surface."It appears my wife desires her sister to depart, and I wholeheartedly concur regarding the timing. I require you to escort her," Luca reluctantly discloses.I'm feeling quite bewildered. Why would he choose to send Niko, of all people, to accompany me to my father's estate when he poses a more significant threat to my safety than Bianca does? Niko glares at Luca, clarifying that he does not appreciate his boss."Luca," I started to say."Uh-ah, Emma. I'll help with this unexpected delivery, but it will be don

"Wait. What? Does Luca know?" I ask quietly, trying to keep my worry from being evident."No, I haven't told him. These are your results, Mrs. Moretta, not his.""If he knows, it'll worry him. What do the blood results mean? The milli—whatever it was.""I understand your concern, Mrs. Moretta. Your child is his heir, remember? Your HCG levels suggest you are very early on, four or five weeks perhaps. It would be premature to perform a scan at this stage as there will likely be nothing to see. So I'd suggest waiting another fornight. However, we've caught your vitamin deficiencies early, so my chosen treatment will be very effective.""Right, the vitamins, they'll address the deficiencies completely?""Yes, they are easily manageable with the prescribed treatment.""Well, that's something. Can you send the prescription to the same pharmacist?""Of course, it'll be there momentarily for Niko to collect.""Thank you.""My pleasure, Mrs. Moretta. And congratulations, you must be so excited

EmmaDespite feeling reluctant, I wake up feeling groggy and cold. My teeth chatter, and my headaches with a dull pulsating pain that I can only compare with the first time I was drugged in the same way.At first, I was trying to remember exactly what happened. It's there in the back of my mind—just out of reach. But as soon as my eyes snap open, I'm rendered anxious at the reality I've found myself in.I was so sure dropping my sister home would go along without a problem, and it did—until it didn't.Begging my eyes to focus, I look around my surroundings. I'm in a cell. The walls are dark and wet, as I can tell from the smell that seemingly comes from the eighteen hundreds, and the floor is equally as wet beneath me.I know this place...I hate this place.Gritting my teeth, I sit up, scooting back out of panic, expecting someone to greet me. But all that welcomes me is pitch black and the howl of silence as my back hits a hard surface damp with trickling water."Hello?" I call out,

"Basta, Bianca. Controllare." Enough, Bianca. Control, my father spits at her as he holds her back from moving to my mother."Papa," she cries, making him twitch with his first sign of emotion. Her wild and frightened eyes catch my own, yet I can't find an ounce of empathy for her. It's her; she must have crossed me. She's the reason I'm here, and it seems Luca knew all along that she was bad. He felt that something was off. But if that was the case, how the fuck did I find myself here and not at home with him?Pushing aside thoughts of Luca and our men and their whereabouts, and with despair weighing heavy on my heart, I slowly stand on the spot I was cowering in. My father smirks, lifting the gun to point towards me."Oh bambino, vuoi giocare?" Oh child, do you want to play, he asks.Trembling, I choose to act upon impulse rather than think over his question. Running towards my father, I fling my whole body weight into disarming him.I'm successful but not efficient enough because h

LucaThe pendulum swings in the clock on the bookshelf opposite my desk. It's a tiny family heirloom passed down from my father and his before him. Inside, there's gunpowder hidden in a small compartment, something insignificant unless you know its meaning. With each swing comes a tick, which signifies another second Emma is not standing beside me where she belongs.A cleared throat over the mobile's loudspeaker reminds me that Theo is awaiting a response to his revelation that Niko and Emma have disappeared."What the fuck do you mean the pair of them are missing?" I suddenly screamed down the phone to Theodore, who had strict instructions to drive them to the pharmacy before bringing them home safely, in one piece. The drop-off of Bianca to Rossi went without a problem, just as Emma had promised it wouldn't, but now it seems the pair of them have vanished into thin air, never returning to the car from the pharmacy, which is not fifteen minutes drive from our home. I've felt divided about Bianca for days now. I had never imagined she would be so bold as to take her own sister from right under my nose.Fuck, I've failed. Failed yet a-fucking-gain."I should know these things," I admonish Angelo as my mind races. He nods but doesn't comment on the matter, so I push aside his secrecy and yell to make myself feel better. "Get out there, find my wife, and BRING HER BACK TO ME!"There is no time like the present to see if these men are genuinely loyal to only Emma. And if they don't help, then they'll die by a bullet before they step foot inside my compound again."Yes, sir," they all shout in unison before piling out of my office.Chewing glass, I pick up the desk phone, ringing Mass first, but get no answer. Then I try Niko, who goes through to answer the phone immediately. Emma has no phone to call, making me wonder why the fuck I haven't supplied her with one yet.I've lost so many men over the last few days that I'm running low on reserves. Tea

Luca"Aria, come to Papa?" I request, sitting opposite Emma on the floor of our new lounge in our new home. I bought a new country estate not long ago, in secret and not in either of our names, of course. Our little family is growing by one more, not to mention all of Rossi's former men, women, and children who have moved with us.Yes. Emma is pregnant again, six or so weeks. A little flickering entity is living deep within her tummy once again. I'm excited to watch her swell with this child, as I was with our princess, and I'm equally happy to find out who fate has blessed us with.Aria is nearly ten months old. She's tall like me. Her previous brown hair has turned into long, curly blonde locks like Emma's, and she has her mother's eyes but strangely looks a hell of a lot like me."Go to Papa, Arri," Emma encourages.Watching intently, I hold my hands out for our little girl, and she shakily takes some steps, holding onto her mother's fingers. I've been away these last few days, bu

Anxiety rolls through me, and I start to wonder if anyone would have followed them. If our impenetrable home will fail us. I started spiralling; I swore I might begin hyperventilating before Luca reentered with his parents.Dimitri and Lucia are dressed down in casual clothes that scream normal people. Luca looks far too overdressed compared to the three of us, but his father appraises him with a grin before holding his hand out."Congratulations, son.""Thank you, Father."Lucia moves away from them and comes to me. She smiles kindly and bends her knee beside me on the sofa."Congratulations, Emma. How are you?" she asks me, her hand coming out to stroke my hair away from my face before she holds my chin much as she has done a few times before."Tired, overwhelmed, wired. That's hard to answer.""Birth does that to you; the drop in hormones is worse than the pregnancy itself. How have you been getting along? Is there anything you need?" She litters me with questions, surprising me. I

EmmaIntroducing Aria to our men—our family was exhausting, but at least we could keep her birth a secret from the outside world with them.Luca and I have been in this quiet, subdued, and fabulous bubble, but just as with everything, Dimitri is not out of the know. The plan was to call him the day after the birth, but we put it off and then again the next day and the one after that. It turns out he made the first move. He called just this morning, six days after her birth, to ask why we were keeping his grandchild away from him and Lucia and if we knew there were protocols in place to pass over the information. The call was scary; I watched the version of Luca, who had been around me for days, turn into the man I came home to over a year ago. Honestly, we didn't call to prevent the rest of the world from knowing. There's this deep-rooted need to protect my little girl; no, that's not right. It's not a need; it's a must. I watch as he grabs Aria's blanket, the little changing bag and a small teddy Anna gifted Aria."Let's get comfortable in the lounge before they come?" He asks, holding a hand out to lead me from the bed.I nod, cradling Aria closer before I stand and let Luca walk us down to the lounge we never use. The sofa isn't as comfortable as the bed; it's cold and far too firm, but I make myself as comfortable as I can while Aria continues to feed. She soon falls asleep, so I move her to lay over my shoulder to burp her. That's when Luca leaves, obviously having word that his parents are here.Anxiety rolls through me, and I start to wonder if anyone would have followed them. If our impenetrable home will fail us. "Take your T-shirt off?" I request with a beaming smile that sends tingles through my veins at the thought of gifting this invaluable gift of life to Luca after so long."O—Kay," he replies with confusion but does it anyway. His shirt goes over his head, and he dumps it with his shoes on the floor. I lay our daughter, who is just as naked as his chest, on him. The doctor raved about skin-to-skin, so surely that extends to her father, too? I gently press her head sideways so she can breathe, and I watch with amusement as Luca holds his hands out as if he thinks he might harm her if he moves. "Here," I smile, moving his hands to cradle her before I cover the pair of them with the blanket around my legs. It's an instant connection for him, his eyes close as he presses his back into the lifted mattress, and he leans down to smell our little girl's head. A sound somewhere between a moan and a groan exits his mouth, and tears fall through his closed eyes."Congratulations, Papa," I whisper

EmmaAs I look down into my baby's eyes, I forget all the hardship her labour created only moments ago. She has the deepest shade of mahogany brown hair that covers her head and curls by her ears, yet her eyes seem somewhat light—perhaps they'll be a shade of blue like mine or a deep shade of marbled grey. Her looks remarkably resemble both of ours, yet it seems she favours her father more. It's in her straight nose, sharp jawline, and chin that resembles his. I know this might change; in fact, there's a sure certainty that my daughter will evolve rapidly, but right now, I couldn't be happier to meet her, especially to have her resemble her father in such ways. My world re-centres around her, making everything else seem dim in comparison to her. I've never felt love like this. It pulls my insides as something imaginary envelopes the pair of us. It feels like a bubble, one that's missing one person—the very man waiting to meet his daughter properly. "Hello, my darling," I hum quietly

The petite blonde, blue-eyed, screaming doll had me hooked. She held my finger and soon babbled up at me as if her world had already revolved around me. Christ, I hope our daughter looks like her mother and equally looks up to me like that. What I'm trying to describe is how fate had me fall for her even then when she was a newborn baby, and my love has lasted this long.Emma turns to me, looking up as she has on so many occasions before. She seeks my gaze on the balcony, and I hold hers for a long moment. A smile spreads on her face, and she summons me, taking my breath away. She's forgiven me yet again, not that I deserve her forgiveness after treating her so demeaningly. Holding one finger up, I back away, turning into the bedroom before floating toward her. And then through the house and down the hall. I walk through the open patio doors and down the steps into the garden and stalk towards her fervently. Her hand is outstretched at the very moment I grab her waist, pulling her

Six months later LucaAs I stare at Emma sitting in our garden with her stomach round and protruding, one hand rubbing it absently, I think over the events that led up to this moment.Things haven't always been easy for us, far from.Falling in love with her at such a young age gave my father the weakness he needed to exploit to keep me in check. He had his gun trained on her one too many times with only our knowledge to make me do as he wished. Taking her away from me made me thicken my skin; that was the most suitable decision he ever made and probably will ever make regarding me and my future. Without that singular choice, I don't know if I would ever have become the man everyone fears. The loss of Emma was monumental in creating the drive I lacked beforehand. I suppose I should be thankful to my father; without his input, Emma's and my child's safety would be at risk more than it is.The sun shines down on her as if telling me to watch my beautiful wife as she walks alongside t
