Emma

After seeing the incriminating photos back in the bedroom, my heart races with the need to protect Niko at all costs.

I grab my knife and strap it to my ankle, and I'm about ready to fall into hand-to-hand combat with Luca if needs must. But I hope it doesn't come to that.

Racing through the house in a sprint, I note the angry stares of a few of Luca's men, but they don't stop me as I walk down the stairs leading to the house's base level, the cold seeping into me instantly. My anxiety about the past haunts me, and memories surface just as quickly as I blink the days spent below my father's home in the name of training.

I can't dwell on the past, not now, not when Niko's in grave danger for no good reason because of me. God knows how much time has passed and how much time Luca has had to do whatever he deemed fit in the name of punishment. I can't explain it, but there's something pulling me to protect him, to ensure his safety despite the fact that I barely know him.

"What did you do?" I ask as Niko over-talks me."Get out, queen. Let us men fight; it'll all blow over soon enough.""You don't understand... the pictures. They've manipulated them to look as if you were...kissing me," I whisper. My words burn my tongue as Luca watches with keen interest. My body gravitates forward, placing itself in front of Niko as if I were the shield to save his life."Manipulated, or showing the truth?" Luca asks."He wouldn't touch me like that," I gasped. "You heard what Mass said, he's my brother—."Luca assesses me as Niko leans up and onto his feet. Suddenly, I'm flung behind him, his body covering me as he staggers forward unsteadily."So it's true?" Luca's voice changes. He seems somewhat resigned, a flicker of uncertainty filtering through his gaze as he assesses whether I'm lying.Once, he would have known if I were lying by just looking at me, but it seems I've mastered fooling him, and it seems he's still deciding whether I am telling the truth.Sadnes

EmmaWe struggle despite Niko trying to aid Bianca and me in getting him up the stairs. He's a dead weight and is moaning far too much with every movement.I worry about his organs and his blood loss, but I have to grit my teeth and concentrate on the task at hand.Eventually, we get him up the dark stairs and into the lower level of Luca's home. He half-limps there as Bianca and I shoulder some of his weight to his office. Luckily it isn't far from the basement door because he's a wall of fucking weight despite being a lean man."Stay here with him whilst I find Anna," I stipulate to Bianca as he falls into his bed dramatically. Her eyes widen with fear, but I ignore the niggling feeling and turn to leave. "Wait—." She calls after me as I reenter his office, hoping to look for Anna."What is it, Bianca?""Are you sure you'll be safe out there...by yourself?" She asks with deep interest."I'll be fine; go watch him. Please?"She huffs but nods anyway and then turns back and walks i

LucaContemplating my life is not a task I like to take part in. But here I sit, five tumblers deep, as I assess every fuck up I've made since Emma came back to me.I love the girl so profoundly that my behaviour stems from fear of losing her for a second time, yet this time, it is me who is making the decisions; it's me who is pushing her away.I can't believe I hurt her as I did in the kitchen. I can't believe I allowed that insidious side my father nurtured to take over and cause her harm. Her, of all fucking people. Why must I keep making these mistakes? Why can't I treat her as I always did when we were younger? Can she even love me after seeing the monster I've indeed become? These are the things I contemplate in my alcohol-induced haze.Emma never resurfaced from Niko's room, and though I could have barged in when the doctor let himself out, I knew it was the wrong thing to do.So instead, I stood in the darkness of the unlit hall, waiting for her to leave the room, hoping that

"Your mother warned me that you seemed off the other night, but I didn't want to admit that perhaps this takeover has put too much on your shoulders too quickly. But this," he bellows, stabbing his pointer finger into his phone. "This is very, very disappointing.""I'm sure it is, father.""I never raised you to be this type of man," he adds with a fist on the desk."We sell women to the highest fucking bidder; we hurt women every day of our lives. Force them to uproot everything they know, to lose their families and dreams and aspirations to sell them to the next man, one that probably has a weird ass kink that the girl has never even heard of yet a few measly marks on my wife's neck is too much for you to handle?" I scoff. "Oh yeah, besides that, you never taught me to lay my hands on a woman.""We sell women to men that are vetted. They are safe, fed, looked after," he shakes his head. "I have a team checking on each girl that passes through our hands at least once every few months

EmmaI woke up from a restless night's sleep to face a new day with a fresh perspective. Throughout the night, I had been nestled between Bianca and Niko on his bed whilst cuddling Bianca, but in the morning, I turned to look at Niko.He was still clearly in pain, his abdomen showing worsening signs with mottled purple hues. Despite the doctor's miraculous revelation that nothing was broken, Niko was seriously bruised, and that coincided with his lack of sleep overnight.I spent some time simply observing his breathing, silently contemplating how to best care for him. And though I lay there promising myself not to think about the events of last night, my mind wandered. Had my behaviour triggered Luca's response just as much as his triggered mine in the kitchen? It feels as if we've been conditioned to tiptoe around one another for fear we'll lose one another again, and I know that my father dislikes that I was called home to fulfil his promise. So, are we exasperating the problems r

The mafia business follows mafia protocols. Luca obviously upset his father enough to provoke this reaction from him. Besides, I'm not sure I want to argue with him after he's lost an evidentially large amount of blood.I pour us both a drink, passing one tumbler to him as he assesses me with hooded eyes. I have no clue what he's thinking right now, and for once, I see the pain etched on his handsome face. The liquid burns my throat as I swallow the tumbler full, but after the last few days, I feel that I need something to steady me and look at his arm.I'm not squeamish, not really, but I was right. After ripping his shirt open, I note his shoulder is a bloody mess with flesh sticking out of a close proximity shot from what I can only presume is a pistol. Blood trickles out the hole and down across his skin as I assess him flexing the hole."You need a doctor; it's still inside—," I note as the gold bullet shines back at me and the blood surrounding it dribbles down onto his peck."

LucaLeaning forward, I catch Emma's neck and hold her still before me. She's apologising, which irks me, so I tell her so with a deep voice of control."You have nothing to apologise for, bambina.""I hit you," she sighs, running her fingertip over the slight swelling around my eye.She did hit me, and rightly so. I was acting manic; I wasn't allowing her space. I refused to let her leave and all that after I wrongly accused her of cheating which I still need to investigate who exactly sent me those damn fucking images. They say pictures tell a thousand words; well, perhaps they conceal a thousand truths.I can completely accept that she felt backed into a corner, and I'm glad she raised her back to me in a way.The fact she can stand up to me is something our relationship obviously needs, but I don't wish to push her so close to the edge to cause her to strike out.I want to be better; I intend to be better. Niko opens the office door. He moves stiffly as he swings the door to reveal my father and mother. Neither says a word to me or looks my way. He just opens his palm to offer my parents into my office in cold silence.Emma instantly begins to move from my lap, so I hold her back, enabling her to turn to face them, silently stipulating that she stays put. This irks both Niko and my father, but I pay no mind to their opinions."Mother... father.""Good evening," my mother greets us, walking in with a delicate smile to sit opposite us.Her gaze wavers as she sees the screwed-up gauze and bullet sitting proudly for her to look at. Her gaze searches for my father with contempt, and it's then I realise my father obviously wasn't as forthcoming with his role in my injury as he should have been."Are you okay?" My mother asks me."Just fine; what are you doing here?" I grit out. I can't quite raise my gaze to my father's but glance at him, moving to stand beside my mother."I'm sorry, son. I s

"I must go, Father, if that's all.""It isn't," he tells me fleetingly. "I have a job coming up. Densel has called a meeting; I'm not invited. I need eyes and ears for the meeting. I need someone inside.""When did that happen?""Just last night," he confirms. "I've had word that he's making movement. I'm unsure what his aim is, but we must get on top of this before word gets out." He frets."That's what you think this is about? Father, no one knows about Emma. I've ensured that. This has to be about Bianca. Franko was adamant Bianca belonged to him. Rossi must have struck a deal. I haven't discovered what was promised or if she was in exchange for something, but I will. Honestly, I think it weird he'd promise Bianca at all. She was to be the next Don; marrying her to someone low like Densel would have been my last choice.""We all have our preferences," my father cites. "Get me someone on the inside. Someone he wouldn't expect. He has to trust them.""I know a few people. Let me call

Luca"Why is Emma completing your jobs?" my father asks me as we speak over the phone. The pretence was about business landing this afternoon, but the longer we spoke, the more he worked to ask me something. The jobs have been slow since Emma took in the drugs, I think because my father realised my intentions, but I haven't complained. The less time we spend on jobs, the more time we have in the bedroom—or kitchen, perhaps even the gardens, as I take her after a slow walk and in-depth talk.Things have been improving between Emma and me, and I can't complain."Ah, you noticed that, did you?" I tease. Gripping a cigarette out of the drawer on my office desk, I bring it to my mouth and light it as my father remains quiet on the other end of the phone."Noticed?" He snaps. "Oh, I've noticed your slackness, Luca. It's the talk of the heirs. Word has it the future is changing at your hands, and everyone's for it.""Well, that's good; I don't need to work hard to get everyone to travel on

Walking me to the bed, he places me down softly at the end of the mattress, leaning with me as he deposits me on my back. His arms lay on either side of my head as we kiss passionately, his tongue swiping against my own as we share the saliva living in our mouths. My hands find their way into his hair, fisting gently as a wave of pleasure flits through my lower stomach, making me attempt to close my legs finding that it's an impossibility with him between them. Luca takes that as his cue to laugh before pulling back, taking his lips and tongue to kiss down my throat, between my breasts. Overmy stomach."One day soon, this tummy will swell with our child, and I'll worship you at your feet for giving me my second reason to live," he whispers against the taught skin of my tummy."Your first?" I breathe."You, of course, Amore Mio.""Soon," I say with avid hope, jumping back to the thought of a child living within me. I think that's something we both want now, something I can be thankful

Emma"Luca—," I drag out as he slams me into our bedroom door carelessly. The night was a success, and I've officially agreed to work for his name much as I promised to remain by his side at our wedding, not that there was ever any cause for concern regarding protecting Luca's legacy. It's always been at the forefront of my mind; I've never needed convincing."Fuck you're so enticing, Bambina. Why did we fight for all those weeks?" He asks me as he kisses up the column of my neck beneath my chin, only to pull away and start on the opposite side of my neck from my clavicle to my ear. His beard ruffs against my skin, sending slight tingles through my neck."It was—fun," I admit shyly because, amid the heartbreak, I found some solace in connecting with Luca after so many years apart, even if it was unfavourably. "Oh, it was?" He asks, pulling back to stare at me with an incredulous look of confusion, but his hands never leave my waist, his fingers flexing as he says his following words.

“Very well, Franko. Perhaps you'll be my first enemy. How joyous," Emma laughs manically. So sexy..."You bitch, you haven't got that title yet. It belongs to Bianca; go lay down under your husband and stay in your place!""Enough," I growl unhappily. "Emma is the next Don Rossi. She'll be taking over in my name. All assets will pass between us, and we will rule with an iron fist over both cartels," I tell him, walking closer to where I grab his shoulder. Squeezing down, I have him turning into a bitch himself. "If I ever hear you talk to my wife like that again, you'llbe fertiliser formy plants.""Stop," Maria Densel, his mother, cried as I make him kneel at my feet."Do you understand, Franko?" I ask, ignoring her as I press hard on his clavicle."Yes," he spits through clenched teeth. "Very good, stay the fuck away from my wife and sister-in-law. And keep far, far away from me."Walking away, I note every damned person staring my way. They all look shocked that I'm letting the man

My father's home is filled with black-coat men who appraise Emma hanging on my arm and silent women who wish to be her. I watch with a clenched jaw and tick in my muscles as they look at her from head to toe with need or envy.I hate these men, hate that I have to work alongside them, but needs must, and I'd rather be breathing than dead in a ditch somewhere. And regarding the women, they should be jealous.I move my hold from Emma's hand to her waist, pulling her into my side as I attempt to stake a claim on her. But honestly, with the cartel, your wife never belongs to you, not really. This is one of the main reasons I'm choosing to have her lead. It'll be me in the firing line, so to speak, which is a vast improvement over potentially having her taken in an attempt to use her as leverage. My father's face flashes in the corner of the room illuminated by the many chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, and my mother held closely to him, much as I'm holding Emma. His eyes appraise us

Luca"You look—ravishing," I whisper against the side of Emma's throat as I kiss my way down the column of her neck. She's freshly showered and tastes sweet like her body wash, which still resided in my bathroom cabinet even all these years later. It's sweet, like marshmallows, and reminds me of the old Emma. The one that smelt delicious out in the breeze. Nowadays, she uses a more floral body wash when she isn't stealing mine. She's wearing a full-length gown in deep emerald green. It splits up her right leg, opening at the thigh whenever she moves. A silent invitation if I've ever seen one. It makes me want to strip her and do unspeakable things until we fall asleep. But she's needed downstairs, and I'll be damned if she misses this ceremony for the second time in a row. We're at my parents' home, and she's in my childhood bedroom. The decor is the same, and my things remain untouched. A photo of us as teenagers stuck by her sits in the mirror before us. I stare back at us, admiri

Glancing upfront, my eyes clash with Mass's in the rearview mirror. Concern etches his face for me, something I wish he hadn't shown me. I glance out the window for the drive over to the airstrip. It's only a short fifteen minutes, the very same one I ran off to with Niko when I escaped the house Luca tried so desperately to cage me into. God, things have changed so much in such a short amount of time. As we pull onto the tarmac, I note the plane, a few cars, and four crates are being moved to be unloaded from the small private plane on the strip. "You go, I have a phone call to make," Luca encourages as Mass walks around the car to open my door for me.Though he takes out his phone, I presume he's making excuses for me to do the work. He's told me umpteen times that I must make a name for myself to prove my abilities. And I know this is all in the name of proving I'm capable, but the daunting task of revealing our wishes to his father seems overwhelming.Walking in step beside Mas

Emma Over the next week, Luca has an increasing number of jobs circulating from his father compared to the weeks before. I think this has to do with the two-week rule of marital bliss that any heir is given post-wedding before the run-up to their takeover. We are now spending the majority of our time driving around to docks and airstrips to intake the likes of drugs, weapons and girls.Luca has been deferring all decisions to me, even with his father's disgust, but I've been making them, and Luca has been acting on my suggestions. Dimitri's a very clever man, and there's no way he hasn't gotten wind of something shifting between Luca and me. I hope he doesn't take the news so badly that he makes a rash decision regarding my life because the possibility is high, especially in this line of work. This evening, we have a dinner at Dimitri's. Several of the Don will be in attendance, as I'm pledging myself to the Moretta name. This should have happened some time ago, but I ran off to Ge
