In small ways, Adder made me think of my kid sister Gabrielle. Well, except Gabby would never come to such an event, nor would she be dressed even close to how Adder is. She had grown quiet as the match began. I watched as Ashton and this champ circled each other, assessing each other.
From my vantage, I saw none. But Ashton must have seen something as he grinned at the champ. "What he grinning for?" Adder asked. "He must have spotted a weak point." I explained. I still couldn’t be sure what the weak point was. But that was quickly answered as the champ moved to throw a punch at Ashton.
Ashton dropped down low and went directly for the man's legs getting him to the ground, and started to twist at the left ankle. The man grunted, hitting the ground, and tried to kick Ashton off with his other foot and, with a few attempts, was able to knock Ashton away though the damage was done. He got to his feet, having to favor his left foot more than before. So that was the weakness. Knowing Ash, he was going to focus on that foot.
Ashton took a few hits throwing a few solid punches of his own, striking the man. Every impact and movement Ashton made was to force his opponent to put weight on the left foot. Ashton drew it out before tackling the man down and putting him into a solid ankle kick submission applying excessive pressure and twisting at the injured ankle. A cracking sound could be heard softly under all the shouting of the crowd.
"Ashton is...." Adder tried to find the words. "An unyielding and violent man?" I offered. Adder nodded. "Yup. He's not known for being gentle." I commented. "Glad it was you who decided to confront me bout following ya." she started, now understanding what we meant when we said it was best for her it had been me and not Ashton that chose to stop her.
The champ finally tapped, unable to get Ashton to break the hold or take more of the pain. Ashton finally released his hold when he was named the winner to the astonishment of all but him and I.
"Well, I hope your other bets were more fruitful." I commented. Adder shrugged. "Made a couple of quid." she answered. Ashton collected his winnings and pushed through the crowd and over to us. "Well, that was good sport. Why is your pet on your back?" Ashton asked, pocketing his winnings.
Laughing, I rolled my eyes at him. “He just wanted to pick me up, I suppose.” Adder answered. “She wanted to see if you were all talk, so I let her up on my back so she could see through the crowd. Apparently, the guy whose ankle you just snapped was top dog around this fighting ring.” I explained.
“Meh, he wasn’t so tough. So, you learn your lesson about judging books by their covers?” Ashton questioned, taking his watch back from me putting it on his wrist. “Yea, I ain’t gonna bet against you two in the future.” Adder said. “Release your pet back into the wild, and let’s get back to the dorm. We have to still sneak past the RA.” Ashton said, checking the time.
I shrugged, bending down for her to get off my back. “Alright, down you go, pet. We need to sneak into our dorms back at Oxford University.”I instructed. Adder nodded, getting down. “Guess I’ll be seeing you blokes around. Be mindful of your pockets.” Adder teased, walking away with a smirk and wave. I don’t know why but I find myself watching her leave, worried for her.
“Come on, Mason, let’s go.”Ashton insisted, nudging me. “Your pet will be fine. Stop being well, you… worrying about everyone.” he sighed. I nodded because what else could I do. “I know. I mean, she’s survived however long without help. Let’s head back.” I agreed as we walked out. The walk back was, at least, uneventful. No signs of Adder, even though I was looking for her.
After sneaking past our RA’s room, we arrived back at our dorm. “I’m going to take a shower. I don’t know if I’ll be able to sleep. I’m way too amped after that fight.” Ash grinned, tossing his hat on his messy bed before going into the water closet. Sighing, I started to undress. Unlike Ashton, I don’t just throw my things about. I like to keep my half of the room neat and organized.
Neither Ashton nor I was able to get out to the fights over the next few weeks. University life had taken hold of us. We both have a heavy class load as freshmen, and then we each have added a sport. Ashton joined the swim team while I joined the rugby team. It was grueling but in a good way.
I was returning to the dorm each night mentally and physically exhausted. I loved it. I’ve had to help Ashton here and there with assignments. We both know our fathers expect the best from us. Our fathers told us if we both got B+ at minimum, we’d be given an allowance to rent an apartment and escape dorm life.
I couldn't get Adder out of my head. I found myself thinking about her at random times, during a lecture and even while in rugby practice. Tonight, I dragged myself into my dorm, and I found her on my mind again. Is she okay? Is she safe? Has she eaten? I glanced at Ashton's bed and saw he’s already out cold. So, no sense asking him if he’ll look for her with me. So instead, I put my bag down and headed back out.
Cautiously I duck past my RA’s room. Peeking in, I saw him studying at his desk diligently. Good. Let’s hope he continues not to pay attention. The next obstacle I had was campus security.
Luckily, they are about as observant as my RA. I let out a breath of relief as I got beyond the university's walls and into the city. Now, where might I find Adder?
I checked a few different alleys where I’d heard homeless congregate, but she wasn’t among them. I’d asked a few people, but no one had seen a girl fitting her description. “Thank you anyways.” I sighed after the fifth person said they’d never seen her. What was this girl a ghost? Did we imagine her? “Here, thank you for what help you could offer. If you see her, please tell her Mason was looking for her.” I said, offering the woman a tenner for her trouble.
Walking away, hands in my pockets, I started to wander. I found myself going in the direction of the fights or where they’d been last. I wasn’t sure if she’d be there. Hell, I didn’t know if the fights were there again. I was ready just to turn around and try another night again when I thought I caught a glimpse of her.
“Adder?” I blinked, following. I saw her run down an alley followed by three rather angry-looking men chasing her. Oh, this didn’t look good. And I was certainly not going to ignore it. I’d been hunting her down for the last two hours.
Now I find her, and she’s in trouble. I don’t even care why they are after her. I won’t let three men hurt a girl. So, with no direct plan in place, I used my wind to propel myself up to the roof to have the best advantage.
I’d just cleaned up at the fights, but my good mood was being dragged down, feeling that I was being followed. Sore losers, I was sure. But screw them. If they don’t like that they lost to a girl like me, that’s on them, not me. I won my fight fair and square. And just got lucky with bets. No big deal. Leaving the latest location for the fights, I stuck to the back ways hoping to shake them. "We should find that little snake and turn her into shoe leather for hustling us out of our hundred quid." one murmured to the others. "Yeah. Show her that she can't mess with us. I think she went this way." another said. Hustled? Bullshit! They underestimated me, which is on them, not me damn it. "Then what are you two idiots standing around for? Let's get her!" the third ye
Taking a deep breath and putting on my best terrified face I ran from the alley to the main street looking frantically in all directions and spotted a constable. “CONSTABLE! CONSTABLE! HURRY COME QUICK PLEASE THESE MEN NEED AN AMBULANCE!" I shouted, running to the constable. The officer stopped and looked at me with concern. This was the performance of my life. I don’t think I acted this well even back in my drama department at primary school.“Slow down there son. What’s this about needing an ambulance? Who does? Where are they? What happened?" the officer asked. He was looking me over trying to see if I was the person hurt. Of course I had no injures to speak of. I needed to keep up my show. So I took a few purposely shaky breaths. Letting him believe I was trying to regain some composure.“I was on my way back to the
I’m left dumbfounded. He not only steps in to save me from those goons but now… now he gives me money insisting I seek medical treatment? I couldn’t wrap my head around it. I’ve never known anyone like him before. I looked up from the money he pushed into my hands and saw him looking back at me. I smiled just a little, and I can’t even understand why. Why does he want to look out for me, to take care of me? And why does that make me smile? Hell, why does him looking at me like he did make me smile? I shook my head and hurried away. Well, not hurry too fast. I am injured, after all. Between what I won at the fights and the money Mason gave me, I could get a local doctor to check me out. He’s been known to tend the homeless, but he’s no saint. No, he usually wants payment, and if you don’t have the money, you have to make a trade which often means h
I’d known she’d been following us around campus for weeks now. I didn’t call her out on it at first because it was amusing. And second, if she was on campus watching us, I knew she was safe. "I don't really try getting laid. Not exactly something I struggle with. Birds tend to be the ones pursuing me. So you in or not pet?" I questioned, stepping away from the wall.I could see the gears turning in her mind. She was trying to decide how much she trusts me. I know this offer is a lot and possibly extreme. I’m offering to let an underage girl stay at my house with three other blokes and me. I’m sure that there being two guys she doesn’t even know doesn’t help. But I want to know she’s safe. And if she’s with us, I can make sure she’s okay. She smiled and jumped off the wall with her rolled-up sleep
So far, I was already on edge about this. His house was way too nice for the likes of me to stay in. And while Andy and Oliver seemed nice, I wasn’t sure yet. Ashton certainly hadn’t been pleased to see me. Which honestly, pissing him off might be reason enough to stick around the whole week. And now Mason was acting like everything was normal, showing me around. He is far too good of a man to be my friend. But I don’t think if I tried to distance myself, it would work. He found me that night that he saved me. I don’t know if it was just fate or he was looking for me. But he had been there. And every time I tried to forget about him, to even leave Oxford and give up keeping an eye on him, I couldn’t. I can’t explain it, but something about him draws me to him.Now so far, everything about this house seems okay. It
Andy turned and nudged Oliver, who nudged Ashton, who shook his head and tapped me on the arm. “Mason, your pet’s talking to you." he remarked. I turned to look for her. I smiled a little, spotting her as she walked over. She had her rolled-up sleeping bag in her arms and wearing probably the least feminine outfit she could put together from my sister’s clothes. “Ain't his pet Ashton. So I suggest ya stop calling me that." Adder glared at Ashton walking up to me.“At least your pet cleans up." Ashton teased. I elbowed Ashton a little. “You look nice. I know my sister’s clothes aren’t really your style. But you look nice. You can throw your clothes in the wash. It’s off the garage." I said, pointing in the direction. Adder stuck her forked snake tongue at Ashton and carried her things to the garage to wash her things. I’m sure she’ll fe
I took the time we sat around watching football to let everything I heard Mason seep into my mind. I didn’t believe people like him could exist. But he honestly wants to be my friend. To help me improve my life. Everyone else I’ve met has overlooked me. And if they did notice me, it was with disgust and telling me to die in the gutter or similar. I was thrilled when my clothes were finished in the wash. It had been a good time since I had my clothes adequately washed. Hearing the final buzzer of the dryer, I excused myself from the guys. They were going to get the last of the party supplies in place. I took a moment to sniff my dry clothes. They smelled so nice. Taking my things back upstairs to Gabrielle’s room, I hurried to change back into my regular clothes. I felt a sense of relief as I slipped into my acid-washed jeans and only slightly torn
As host, I had to try and evenly spend my time greeting people and catching up. But even while I was talking to various guests, or in the case of my ex Vanessa cornered, I still kept track of Adder. I didn’t want her to feel out of place or unwelcome, especially after Jason and his rude remarks. When I noticed a group of girls approaching, I was skeptically optimistic. I wanted to think they would be polite and be nice to Adder. But I’ve also known these women for some time and know that while they try not to show me their more cruel and vindictive sides. So I was looking to find a good moment to excuse myself to rescue Adder from them as she seemed annoyed. But then Tiffany interceded instead. Even if Ashton doesn’t realize that Tiffany is in love with him this week, I’ll be glad she came so that Adder can make a true friend. I knew those two would get along
