In the hospital ward, I lay on the bed. The medical monitor made a dripping sound in my ear. To pass the time, I reached into my nightstand, picked up the remote control, and turned on the TV hanging on the wall.

“Hey, are you feeling better?” Frade pushed the door open.

“Can you tell the doctor to turn off the damn device?” I hate to hear such a short and continuous dripping sound, which makes me mistakenly think that I am seriously ill.

“It's a baby heartbeat monitor.” Frade, who is sitting next to me, glances at the flashing red light. “I don't like the sound of it either, but it can monitor the baby's heartbeat at any time. You have to listen to the doctor.”

“Is there something wrong with the baby?” I asked hastily.

“It's fine.” Frade put his hand on my belly. “The doctor said that it's normal to have occasional abdominal pain in the early stages of pregnancy.”

I breathed a sigh of relief.

“The doctor said you need to rest and keep a relaxed mood.” Frade said, holding my hand, “Th

“I've decided to hold a press conference.” I sat up straight, “That's why I need to keep the card. I recently saw a media report online about my imprisonment. I wanted to take this opportunity to teach Mickle a lesson.”“How?” Frade asked.“I want to spread my personal experience online through the media,” I told him. “I think the media will definitely be interested in my experience. Maybe they'll even help me publish a book.”“You think that's gonna scare Mickle?”“I'm going to tell the press about my relationship with Mickle,” I said. “As soon as the secret is undiscovered, he won't be able to hurt me in private. After all, his actions are under watch.”“Eva, are you sure you want to do this?” Frade looks at me worriedly. “Don't you want to get out of here for a while?”“We're not going anywhere,” I said, “Danger is everywhere. When all the conspiracies are exposed to the light of day, the true faces of the villains will be revealed. Frade, this time we're up against something. Runn

  • His Perfect Wife Strikes Back   167 Interviews With A Journalist

Tommy put me in touch with a reporter from the New City Weekly, and we set up our first interview in a hospital room.I had planned to meet him in a cafe near the hospital, but Tommy thought it would be better for me to do my first interview there. First, for security reasons, and second, Tommy believes that journalists are emotionally involved in the writing of their stories. If a reporter sees me in my hospital gown, he'll be more sympathetic to me.He is about to hear a pregnant woman describe her own traumatic experiences, and he cannot help but feel compassion for the woman. And he will incorporate that compassion into his writing. And as Tommy imagined, when New City Weekly's Paul first met me, his eyes lit up with surprise. At the beginning of the interview, he asked some tough questions. This, as Tommy told me, was a common trick with journalists. They ask tough or embarrassing questions to test the reactions of the interviewees. The goal is usually to test whether the intervi

“The press outside the manor has been waiting for three days,” Frade said, looking out through the window. “Do you want me to have them removed?”“It's unnecessary.”I saw a lot of reporters sitting on the side of the road outside the manor with cameras around their necks. They stared expectantly at the gate. As soon as someone or a car came out, they would rush in.“Send some food and water to them,” I told Frade. “They may have to wait another two days.”“Are you going to talk to those people?” Frade looks at me in confusion.“Why not?” I said. “People always want to know the truth.”Then Frade made a phone call to tell the housekeeper to bring food and water to the waiting reporters outside. The second he hung up, his phone rang again.“Mark and Liv want to see you,” Frade said, clutching the phone. “They're near the estate.”“I'd love to meet them.” I took Frade's call. “Hey, my spy friends. You can go straight to the manor.”Mark's voice came from the other end of the line. “We g

“Mia, you told us that you had very important evidence that you were related to Mickle Blanton. “Is this the document?” The host said, holding up a document in a transparent plastic paper bag, “Can you confirm the authenticity of this document?”“This is a DNA test result. If you have any questions about the authenticity of the document, you can contact the person in charge of this testing institution at the scene.” Mia casually brushed her hair behind the curtain, “I swear on my life that this document is not a fake.”“Please give us five minutes,” the host said to the camera. “We need to authenticate this DNA test on the spot.”At this point, I glanced at the live show where the number of online viewers had reached 100,000 and was growing. This has gone way beyond what I originally planned. Damn it, Mia, how could she show up?“The DNA document has been verified to be completely accurate.” The host turned to Mia behind the curtain. “This document shows that you and Mr Mickle Blanton

I saw my sisters Mia and Frade return after half an hour. Mia sported a low-cut bodice, a short skirt, and big sunglasses that nearly obscured her entire face. She walks alongside Frade, rubbing herself against him, but she can't keep up with him.“I can't accept that she has the same face as you,” Liv said, sitting next to me in a voice I could only hear. “She dresses like a p.rostitute.”“She's my sister.” I looked at the two people who had come in, “Though I didn't want to admit it.”I observed as they entered the living room through the front door. When Mia noticed me, she removed her bizarre spectacles. Her perfectly made-up face broke into a phoney smile.“Hello, my sister. Long time no see.” Mia left her sunglasses on the sofa as if this was her home.I heard Liv snort at her, but Mia didn't care that Liv wasn't nice to her. Mia glanced at Frade, who was taking off his coat, and she said it to him deliberately.“Are you feeling hot, Frade?”“No. It just has your scent on it. I

“You don't know anything,” I said, “If Mickle hadn't come after me, I wouldn't have told the press that he had an illegitimate daughter. Because I can only be protected by exposing my identity to the press. Look at you, you opened up your genetic test to get the title of the President's daughter. You've completely messed up my plans. You might even annoy Mickle.”“But he wouldn't dare kill us,” Mia said, taking a chance. “Now that everyone knows he's my real father, he wouldn't dare make us disappear in front of the media.”I only wanted to use the media's authority to bargain with Mickle, but Mia appeared in front of the public with this DNA test, compelling Mickle to admit that he and us were father and daughter. He most likely assumed it was my plan.Mickle was most concerned with the recording, and if he used his official powers to dismiss it as a farce, Mia and I would be gone shortly. This plan was fraught with danger, and Mia had us walking a tightrope. “I'd advise you not to take out your pistol here,” said Ian, glancing at Frade's hand behind his waist, “Although Mr Blanton told me to try to get you out peacefully, he did not forbid me to use force against you.”“You can try.” Before Frade could finish his sentence, he pulled out his pistol and pointed it at Ian's head.“Once again, let us go!”Even though Frade's pistol was aimed at Ian's head, he didn't change his expression. The next moment, a red light came from nearby. A small red dot was pointed right at Frade's heart.Ian just waved his hand, and the red light shot straight at me. The red dot that had been on Frade shifted to me.“Mr Logan, I'd drop that pistol if I were you,” Ian said, smiling at Frade.Frade looked at me, then he threw the pistol to the ground. After Ian raised his right hand and gestured, a black SUV drove right up to us.“Please get in, Miss,” Ian said as he opened the door.I was in the back seat of the car, and just as Frade was about to catch up, Ian

“Why are you sending people after me?” I questioned him.“I'm going after your husband, Daley, not you,” Mickle said. “I didn't think you'd be on the boat.”“Why did the police charge me with murder?”“It was a personal move on Mikeal's part. He thought he could impress me that way.”“Wasn't it part of your plan for the police to arrest me?” I looked at him straight in the eye, trying to catch him in a lie, but he didn't change his expression.“First, Daley threatened me with an audiotape. Not only did he ask me to help him escape the US, but he also asked me to help him with his drug business. I had only agreed to send him out of the US, but he asked too much, so I had to deal with him. I'm sorry if my actions hurt you.” Mickle's tone was exactly the same as when he was in front of the cameras, “So I went to Mikeal and asked him about your mother's tape. Mikeal didn't know anything about it. He thought it was a conspiracy between you and Daley. He told me he'd fix it. I never thought

A week later, the trip to Mexico didn't go well. Mexicans were angry at Mickle's claims that the wall had been expanded. The Mexican president and Mickle met in secret for three hours. I don't know what they talked about. After the meeting, he got on a plane and left Mexico. But he left me behind, and I knew exactly what he was doing.I was not surprised to see Daley in front of me as the representative of Mexico. Instead, I had the urge to punch him, but I held back.During my stay in Mexico, Daley was responsible for receiving me as the Mexican representative. The night we met, he took me to a fancy restaurant in Mexico City.“I had no idea that the famous Daley was already a member of council.”I looked across at Daley. The last time we parted, he looked pale. But now, beneath his mask of calm lies a kind of ineffable pride.“Do you have to talk to me like that?” Daley smiled at me, “It's been a long time since we were alone together and I miss you so much. “Why do you always have to decide before you tell me?” Frade asked, smoking hard on the couch. “Didn't I tell you to consult me before you made any decisions?”“Because this time there is no room for negotiation.” I stood in front of him, looking at him like that. My heart felt extremely painful. But I had to tell him about my decision. We have to face the truth eventually.“Mia was dead.”Frade's face froze for a few seconds. “She's dead?”“She escaped from the sanatorium, frantically searching for her father and questioning him as to why he had abandoned her. Mickle's bodyguard shot her for endangering the president. It happened right in front of me.”I have mixed feelings about Mia's death. Even though she was detestable, her death was like a razor blade slicing through my unsuspecting skin. It was instant, clear pain.Frade continued to smoke heavily. I didn't expect Mickle to agree to meet with me as soon as I contacted him. But I had to go jogging with him, so I changed into a white sweatshirt and drove to his estate. We jogged side by side on a path near the estate, with two bodyguards following us. I can't remember the last time I ran in the morning. I was a little out of it at first, but after a while, I got my breath back.“Do you need a few minutes?” Mickle, who was wearing a black, short-sleeved tracksuit, turned to me. “Looks like you haven't exercised in a while.”“I'm fine,” I said.“I'll wait for you at the lake ahead,” he said as he continued to run.By the time I got to the lake, he was resting. A burly bodyguard offered him water, but Mickle gave it to me.“You need water,” he says.“Thank you.” I opened the bottle cap and took a sip. The bodyguard somehow took out another bottle of water and handed it to him.“It's a rare day for you to call me,” Mickle said, his face flushed but his tone calm. Judging from his stro

According to Vickie's will, her body will be transported back to Italy for burial. So Frade decided to hold a simple farewell ceremony for Vickie in the manor. After the ceremony, he would be in charge of sending Vickie's body back home with Mark.Vickie was right that no Sicilian would refuse the dying wish to return home. This time, they offered to open their arms to the Logan family to show their deepest sorrow. The place of the farewell ceremony was chosen in the hall of the manor, and all the participants were dressed in black as a sign of mourning. Black-and-white photographs of Vickie's life were placed in the centre of the hall. As her body was temporarily placed in the hospital morgue, guests had to mourn over her picture in silence. Each of the guests held a white chrysanthemum in their hands and placed it in front of the tablet. In the photo, she looked at everyone with a smile on her face, her eyes looking at everything indifferently.Frade greets guests who have come to p

In the room, Vickie is lying on her bed, a private nurse holding a clear plastic tube attached to a ventilator up her nose. Since a trip to Italy, Vickie has grown weaker. Mark told me that she was taken home in an ambulance from a private hospital after she landed.“Why don't you take her to the hospital?” I asked in a low voice.“She's determined to go home,” Mark said. “No one can change her mind, and you know it.”“The patient needs to rest. Please leave the room,” the middle-aged brown-haired nurse said politely.Mark and I left the room just as Frade and Vickie's doctor came out of the other room. That was the room where they had been discussing Vickie's condition, and Frade's sullen face didn't look good. It's terrible.“Mark, please help me get Dr. Hans out of here.” Frade's voice was hoarse and tired, and the stubble on his face seemed to have grown overnight, making him look even gloomier.“Are you all right, darling?” I stroked his cheek and looked at the man in front of me

A middle-aged woman in a plain grey T-shirt and light blue jeans sat on the living room sofa, her hands on her closed knees, her eyes downcast. The coffee in front of her was steaming, and it was obvious that she hadn't touched it.“Hey!” I whispered. “I'm Eva.”“Hi!” The woman stood up at once. She looked at me a little stiffly. “My name is Joe. I'm a friend of Joan's. We're all in the same union.”“How did you find me?” I motioned for her to sit down.“Joan gave me your number,” said Joe, “And we found your place. I'm sorry to bother you so late. Joan needs your help.”“You didn't come alone?” I asked curiously.“I have another colleague with me,” Joe said truthfully. “He's waiting for me outside.”“Is he here to ensure your safety?” I looked at her. “Since your friend is worried about your safety, why are you looking for me? So, what's the matter?”“We just...” Joe looked down sheepishly. “Just in case. But Joan says you're a trustworthy person. You're not like your father.”“I hel

During my stay in the hospital, I received many greeting cards and gifts from strangers. They piled gifts for the baby in front of the hospital or at the nurses' station, and a few fanatical fans even pretended to be nurses sneaking into the ward to see the baby. Fortunately, the fanatics were spotted by the doctor on duty and called the police, who quickly took them away.To prevent this from happening, Frade picked me and my baby up from the hospital in the middle of the night and took us back to the manor. Frade also put guards around the manor to keep out outsiders, leaving Mark in charge of all security, and Liv came to accompany me.Frade was on the move for us to leave the United States. This time he didn't entrust anyone but himself. He didn't tell me that he had met with those people. “What does a newborn baby get him?” I stared at Ian. “He's already president.”“The president just wants to show his concern for you,” Ian explained patiently. “This baby is his granddaughter. You're family.”“What an official statement,” I said. “Just this once. I need at least three months off for the rest of the year. During that time, neither I nor my baby could be seen in any media.”“Deal,” Ian readily agreed.“I'll give you some time to get ready,” Ian said. “I'll let you know when the president is arriving at the hospital.”After Ian leaves, Frade gently places the baby in her own crib, where she falls fast asleep without crying or fussing. Frade walks to the bedside, his eyes brimming with anger. I knew he was unhappy with my decision, and as I prepared for his wrath, he just lowered his voice and said, “Why did you agree to his request?”“Because I can't say no.” I looked at him. “Ian's right.
