How did I ever get myself into his mess? Oh right, I fell for the wrong man. He was so attractive, so charming, until he wasnât. He was a prince, until he became a nightmare. All those things you worry about as a kid, all the things that go bump in the night, theyâre real. Werewolves are real. I know because Iâve been forced to live with them now for several months.
Alec was everything a young woman dreams of when she finds âthe oneâ. Heâs smart, charismatic, and he seemed to really be into me. We dated for a short time, but it was intense. He wanted to be around me all the time and I loved the attention. After a life in foster care, never having anyone who truly cared about me, I fell for it; hook, line, and sinker. In hindsight, he didnât even have to give me that much attention. I thought he was being gentlemanly not wanting to sleep with me, but it turns out, he never wanted me for sex. He wanted a slave.
When heâd âconfessedâ to being a werewolf, he said he wanted me to know everything about him before I decided to bind myself to him. He said he wanted to always be honest with me. So, Iâd gone with him to the forest, and Iâd watched him shift. Iâd been shocked and terrified, but his wolf had come up and licked my cheek and it had been so much like the German Shepard Iâd had in one of my foster homes, only much larger, that I hadnât been afraid.
When he said he wanted to show me what his life was like, to see if I could be happy living with him, Iâd agreed. Heâd taken me to this pack and thatâs where everything had changed. Rather than protecting me, heâs made me a slave, what he called an omega. I was told I couldnât leave, ever, and I was forced to cook and clean for sixteen hours a day.
I was given no time to continue my studies, no time for anything but to serve the pack. The first time I tried to escape, heâd caught me, ran me down in his wolf form and literally dragged me back kicking and screaming. His father, the âAlphaâ, had slapped me so hard across the face that I thought he broken my cheekbone.
âJust where do you think youâre going?â heâd snarled.
âIâŚIâŚI want to go home.â
âYou are home,â heâd growled, and Iâd been put in a room by myself without food or water for three days.
When they came for me, I felt like I was on the verge of death.
âFuck! Sheâs human. We canât leave her as long as the other omegas. Get her out, get her cleaned up and get some water in her,â Iâd heard Alec saying.
Iâd been dragged into my room, not much larger than a closet, and given food and water with the command to bathe and sleep before my shift the next morning.
And my horror had stared all over again. I learned quickly that humans are despised by the werewolves. Weâre weak compared to the wolves and so they think less of us. Iâm not sure why Alec chose me, maybe I was an easy target, maybe because I had no one to come looking for me, no one who cared if died. But either way, I knew if I didnât find a way out of here, Iâd remain a slave to this pack for the rest of my life.
It took a couple of months for me to finally get an opening. The pack was planning a party, inviting other packs to the come and celebrate. I think Alec was becoming Alpha and this is a big deal. I heard them talking about two of the last three Guardians accepting their mates and becoming Lunas, but since I had no idea what they were talking about, I didnât really listen.
Instead, I began planning how I could get away. I know their senses are heightened, but I also know that Alec likes to have sex with pretty girls. He flirts with them then takes them to bed. His father is no different and since there will be a lot of she-wolves here tonight, all of the unmated males will be trying to get laid. Itâs the best chance that I have to get away.
Iâd been waiting for the right moment, when fate shined down on me. One of our packâs she-wolves was making out with a wolf from another pack. He had her pressed against the wall in a hallway and he was so distracted that he didnât notice that his keys fell out of his pocket. When they moved on, I grabbed the keys and put them into my pocket. I went to the side door, holding the keys and pressed the unlock button so I could find the car. There were patrols watching the cars, so I stayed out of sight, seeing which one flashed.
When it did, the patrols looked over, then snickered, talking about how the guy must be having a good time. I quickly rushed back to show my face a couple more times, pour more drinks for the wolves, and then excuse myself to go to the bathroom.
My window of opportunity is small, and I know I have to hurry. I rush out to the car, thankful that Iâd pushed the unlock button earlier. I crawl in, not closing the door all the way. The patrols have moved away, flirting with some she-wolves from another pack. I decide to act as though Iâm the owner of the vehicle and not race away. So, I get the seat set and turn the car on, quickly moving it out of the parking spot.
I see the patrols look over, but since Iâm going at a normal pace, they donât react, going back to talking to the she-wolves. I begin driving down the road, hopefully heading out of the pack lands. Itâs been months and I was only on the road once, so Iâm hoping this is the right way. The only thing I remember is turning right into the pack lands. So, I plan to turn left when I leave here.
When I get to the gate, I smile, but the patrol frowns. âWho are you?â
I donât wait to try and answer, I hit the gas and take off. Almost immediately, I hear howls as wolves alert the others that Iâve escaped. I donât stop, I keep driving as fast as I can, knowing that if I donât get away this time, theyâll most likely kill me.
I drive until I come to a city. I need to get lost in the crowd and find somewhere to sleep. I have no idea where that might be and I realize that I have no money, no ID, nothing except the clothes on my back.
I get out and I begin to run, trying to find someplace to hide. I know they have a good sense of smell, but Iâm hoping that the scents in the city will override my scent. Iâve barely made it a block when I hear tires screeching to a stop behind me. I begin running faster, terrified that Iâll get caught, that this time, theyâll kill me.
I turn, seeing Alec coming after me, fury on his face. I turn and run into a brick wall.
âHello beautiful,â the wall, who is actually a man, says before strong arms come around me. He smells like buttery maple syrup.
The man pulls back, frowning down at me. I have a moment to wonder if this gorgeous man just walked off of the cover of a surfing magazine before my fear takes over.
âPlease. Please help me!â
He looks past me and must see Alec and his goons coming for me. Iâm almost positive that he growls, and he pushes me behind him.
Thereâs no reason for me to feel safe. Iâm not at all safe. But, thereâs something about this surfer-looking guy, something about the way that he just put himself in between me and Alec that has me feeling protected and safe if a way that Iâm not used to.
âWho are you?â I hear Alec snarl.
âMy name is Cayden Holstin. If you donât want the wrath of the Guardians raining down on you like wildfire, I suggest you turn and walk away. NOW!â he snarls and crouches into what I know is a fighting stance.
Did he say Guardians? Isnât that what Alec and his friends were saying before? Something about twins finding their mates? When the man, Cayden, crouches into a fighting stance, I donât even have to duck to stay hidden behind him. Whether that was intentional on his part or heâs just that tall, I donât know, but I stay behind him, my hands looping into the back of his pants. If Alec tries to tear me away, at least I have something to hold onto.âWe just want the girl, Alpha Cayden. Sheâs part of our pack and sheâs distraught. We need to get her home and take care of her.âAlpha? Oh no!âDistraughtâŚâ he says as if heâs rolling the word around in his head but itâs not making sense. âYeah, I might go with terrified, not distraught, based on her scent. So, Iâm guessing that whatever you boys did, she didnât like it. Sheâs run from you and now sheâs asked for my help. If you know who I am, then you know I wonât say no to helping her or anyone that asks for my assistance,â he growls.Iâm not
My little mate is about as skittish as she can be. Iâm not sure how sheâll feel about staying in my apartment, but itâs the safest place for her. As much as I want to know about her and what happened to her, I also feel the need to take care of her.âWE feel the need to take care of her,â Baron says.Baron has been thrashing in my head ever since that Alpha, his Beta, and the other warriors came charging after our mate. I donât know why they want her or what they did to her, but Iâll be contacting Rich to find out everything he knows about Alpha Alec. Her stomach hasnât stopped rumbling and it makes me wonder how long itâs been since sheâs eaten. As we wait for the food, I casually look over her body, noticing the bruises, the scrapes, the dried and cracked skin on her fingers and the cracked fingernails with dried blood that look like sheâs chewed them down to the quick. All of that is making it harder for me to keep Baron under control and to remain calm. But sheâs a human. I need t
Iâm not sure why this guy takes me asking him for help so seriously. I asked because I needed to get away from Alec. But he seems to be taking it to mean I need food, clothing, and a place to sleep. I do, but I donât understand why this guy is making it his problem. He could have let me go after Alpha Alec walked away, but he didnât.Since I learned my lesson, that trusting werewolves is dangerous to my well-being, I follow the guy, Cayden, when he goes to make a phone call. I hear him talking to others about coming here. Iâm already outmatched with this guy, but if he has someone coming to get me, who knows where Iâll end up. It could be worse than what happened with Alpha Alec.I think quickly, rushing into the kitchen as quietly as I can. When I hear him call my name, I lift the pan over my head that was thankfully sitting on the stove. If I can just knock him out, even for a few minutes, I can get away. Once the others arrive, there will be no escape for me. As soon as I see his h
I grind my teeth as my mate breaks down into the most gut-wrenching sobs Iâve ever heard.âCayden, who is she?â my brother asks in the mind link.âMy mate.âHe nods, watching his mate and mine.âCome on. Why donât we go into the other room and relax for a moment. Sometimes Alphas forget what a strong presence they have,â Emlyn says to Madelyn, gently scolding her mate. She turns and gives him a look before leading Madelyn into my bedroom and a moment later, I hear the water turn on.Rich gives her a contrite look before turning to me as they walk into the other room.âWhat pack?â Rich asks, gesturing for me to sit. âOh, pizza. Iâm starving.ââHelp yourself. Theyâre wings, too,â I say as we sit. âAlpha Alec. Do you know him?ââHmm,â he says, taking a bite of food as his eyes stare off while he thinks.âCayd, did you get her some clothes?â Emlyn asks in the mind link.I hop up, grabbing the bag and a bottle of water and taking it into the bedroom.I see Madelyn sitting on the side of th
Emlynâs story is remarkable. Everything she says sounds like it comes out of a fairy tale, well, except the part where Alpha Rich and Caydâs mother was held by a vampire prince for years, and Emlynâs mother was ejected from the pack by her father because he didnât think she had a wolf, or that human hunters came to kill them. None of that sounds like a fairy tale, but the rest of it does.I learned that elves really do exist and one of their friends is the Queen of the Fae. Seriously, all the things that you grow up reading about, the fairy tales and the things that go bump in the nightâŚevery one of them really does exist. What I find the most interesting is the history of the Guardians and how, throughout time, they werenât allowed to be with their fated mates because the Alphas wanted them for power. It wasnât until their parentsâ generation that Guardians were able to be with their fated mates and now, the Guardian line is being passed down genetically through the females. I guess
I could kiss my brother. While I feel nearly incapacitated with my desire to help my mate but fearing that I would scare her, Xander swoops in to save the day.Since weâre all standing, I look at my mate. âIâm guessing horror movies arenât your thing?âShe shakes her head, no.âMaeve wouldnât allow that in our house anyway. Weâll be lucky if we donât have to watch some childrenâs witchy movie like Sleeping Beauty.ââSleeping Beauty didnât have witches,â Madelyn says, frowning.âTell that to my mate. Those sprite thingsâŚwhat are they called, Cayd?ââFairy godmothers,â I say, watching Madelyn. Her heart rate has gone down since Rich left. Iâll need to warn my father to monitor his Alpha aura around her. Maybe if I tell him to act like sheâs one of the twins, heâll get the picture. Of all of us, the twins, who look and act the most like our mother, have always been treated more gently than the rest of us.âMy mate says the fairy godmothers arenât fairies at all, theyâre witches,â he says,
I wake in soft sheets that smell like buttery maple syrup. Or maybe thatâs the smell thatâs coming from the kitchen.I shoot up in bed worried that Iâve overslept and Iâll be punished. Except this isnât my room. I frown, looking around and then it all comes flooding back. I escaped. I ran into Cayd. I met a Guardian, Caydâs brothers, Xanderâs mate, and we watched a movie.I must have fallen asleep during the movie. I certainly donât remember coming back down to Caydâs room. The only reason I know this is Caydâs room is because I showered in here last night and I glanced around at his room, curious to see if he had any pictures of him and his girlfriend or mate. I was surprised at how happy it made me that he didnât have any.He has lots of pictures of his family. Itâs a big family and every one of them, every single one of them, is drop-dead gorgeous. His sisters, and I know theyâre his sisters because they all have the sun-kissed look of people who live by the ocean, all look like mod
âDammit, Baron! Youâre going to scare her!â I growl at my wolf.âYou need to get your nose checked, Cayd. What I was smelling wasnât fear, it was arousal. She wanted me to kiss her,â he says smugly.Damn arrogant wolf.âIâm not arrogant. I was careful with her, but sheâs obviously curious about me and apparently has no problem if I kiss her. You on the other handâŚâ he says, laughing as we walk into the living room.I roll my eyes and go to open the door for my parents. When I do, my motherâs sweet smile brightens my day, just like it has for most of my life.âCayden,â she says, opening her arms. âHello, my son.â The only person that my mother loves more than her children is my father. Well, now maybe her grandbabies are starting to push us out too, Iâm not exactly sure on that one.âHello, Mother,â I say, enveloping her in a hug. My mother is a small woman, having been held by vampires when she was still a growing teenager. It stunted her growth, but not her strength.âHey, Dad,â I say
Four Years LaterâDaddy, who are we waiting for?â my oldest daughter, Theia, stage-whispers to my mate.I see him glance at me from the corner of his eye and I know what heâs going to do before he does it. He whisper-yells right back.âWeâre waiting for Tate if he ever gets his poop together and comes out.âI see a flash of light and I know that Tate heard him. Cayd and Tate have always been close and that hasnât changed in the five years that Cayd and I have been together. Now that Tate has turned nineteen, he decided to take over their familyâs coven. He waited a year, wanting to spend some time with his new mate, Daphne, before making it official. Now, his sweet little mate and their beautiful sprite daughter are sitting in the front row, right in front of us, watching as Tate is about to take over as warlock of his coven.âWhatâs he doing with his poop?â my third child and first son, Idris, asks.Cayd always wanted to name our first son after his father, since none his other siblin
Eleven months laterWhat a difference a year makes! From the moment that my mate ran into my arms, my life felt like it was going full-throttle into my future, a future that still looks so bright and beautiful I can hardly stand it.âYou always say that,â my sweet mate says in my mind. Thatâs just one of many things that have changed in the last year. My mateâs ability to mind link me and use her enhanced senses has improved significantly.âMy future is you. And you, my love, are bright and beautiful,â I tell her. I hear the soft purr in her mind, the emotions of her dragon that has strengthened in the last year. Every time we go to Araphyra, it gets stronger. As I expected, all of the dragons stayed in Araphyra. They created their own village or clan or whatever they call it in the mountain ranges that Lily, Silas, and Tamsyn found. Most of them have created their homes there, although some made their permanent residence in Araphyra. Samlaelâs mate, Mevnenth, stayed in Araphyra and Sa
Everything here in Araphyra is so magical, and now, all of these dragons get to feel it too. I lean into Cayd as we watch Silas and Tamsyn find their families. I watch as the sprites, even the ones from Araphyra who donât know the dragons, all sniffle and wipe their eyes. I watch as Anastasia hugs Ailduin, looking up at him and wiping a tear from his face.âToday is a good day,â I whisper to Cayd.âYes it is. And there are many, many more for us and them,â he says, wrapping his arms more tightly around me.âOkay, everyone,â Lily says, wiping her own tears. âWe have so much to show you. First, I think we should show you to your rooms. You are welcome here as long as you want to stay, but Silas, Tamsyn, and I found a place here in Araphyra, in a different land, where you might be more comfortable. There are mountain ranges there and I understand thatâs where you were living before. Once youâre settled, weâll show you around, and let you begin to connect with your magic. Araphyra is a mag
It takes a lot to get everyone into the vans and to the jetliner, but we make it work. Thankfully, there are enough leaders among the dragons to help keep things moving and since the really young dragons left yesterday, it makes it that much easier to get everyone settled.Rich sent the two pilots and several flight attendants to help us, and he also made sure the plane was stocked with food and beverages. The biggest surprise was seeing my parents, Reagan, and Meadow. They came out to assist in any way that was needed. As soon as my father saw the sprite mates, he burst out laughing. âThe sprites strike again. Hello, Iâm Alpha Liam,â he introduced himself to everyone. My mother introduced herself and, in her way, gently touched the dragons as they boarded the plane. I could tell that many of them could feel her aura as it touched theirs. Since they havenât come into their magic fully yet, Iâm sure it feels weird to them, almost like an awakening inside themselves. Thatâs what it felt
As cold as it is here in the mountains, there is steam coming from the hot springs. âOh! How wonderful.âMy grandmothers join me in the springs, showing me what they use to bathe themselves, using sand and scents found in the woods to scrub and scent their skin. Maybe thatâs where the wild scents come from, or maybe, just like the wolves, itâs because of who we are. They ask me more about Araphyra and I tell them while we soak and then dry off using more plants to help absorb the water off our bodies. Once weâre dressed, we return to the fire. Cayd is back and is helping get this first group in the van. When he sees me, he comes jogging over.âI spoke to Rich. Heâs getting a jetliner for us tomorrow. We need to talk to everyone by tonight and get their agreement to come back, but I also need more vans. Do you want to come with me or talk to the rest of the clan members?â He stops, leaning in and growling softly. âI like this wild scent on you. What is that?ââItâs what the dragons here
I donât remember falling asleep, but I do remember feeling completely overwhelmed. When I wake up, itâs still dark outside but I feel my mate wrapped around me and the fire is in front of me again. I smile, thinking about how my mate always takes care of me.I carefully sit up, looking around the fire. Many of the dragons stayed to sleep here with us. It makes me glad and hopeful that theyâll all go to Araphyra and stay together.âHe really loves you, doesnât he?â my grandmother Camrys asks from across the flames.I look down at my sleeping mate. Somehow, after I sat up, he wrapped his body around me, still protecting me and keeping me warm, even in his sleep. Or maybe itâs Baron keeping watch over me. Either way, it makes me feel so loved and cherished.âYes, he does. And I love him. When we marked and mated, I wasnât sure what would happen or what it would be like. But Iâm able to feel his emotions and hear his thoughts, although Iâm not very good at it. Iâm still surprised when I he
I watch my mate crying with her family. As much as I hate seeing her cry, I know these are good tears. I turn and look at Toddre.âThank you.ââI wasnât sure. I didnât want to say anything, just in case I was wrong. But the ages match. Iâm pretty sure Silas and Tamsyn have family here too. Theyâll want to see them.ââWe will make that happen,â I say, turning back to my mate as she and her grandparents pull back, one of her grandmothers wiping the tears from her eyes.âOh, you have to meet my mate. This is Alpha Cayden,â she says, excitedly, turning to me.âYouâre a wolf?â Qeddryn growls.âI am. But Iâm not like the ones who did this to Madelyn or the others,â I say. âMy family is blessed by the Moon Goddess. We, well the women in our families, are Guardians, much like Madelyn and the others in the Falkor line.âAs weâre talking, more dragons begin approaching us. The ones from the hatching grounds, or as they call them now, the birthing grounds, also come to join us. For the rest of th
I never would have thought sleeping on the ground would be comfortable or that I could be warm in the mountains in winter, but with a fire in front of me and Cayd behind me, I slept great and stayed toasty warm all night. When I open my eyes, I see Toddre putting wood on the fire. âWhat time is it?â I ask.âEarly. Iâd say around 5am. Youâre probably a bit jet-lagged so it might feel later to you.âI look around, seeing Torin, his body covered with sprites, and Avalon, with her body much the same. âWhere are the others?â I ask.Toddre smiles. âWell, Dragon Fierce Lover went to see his mate,â he says chuckling. I laugh with him. The spritesâ names for the dragons are cute. It made me wonder what my name would have been.âDragon Warm Heart left right after you fell asleep. Something about licking and not needing to choose one mate. He hasnât re-emerged, so that should be interesting. And Dragon Grumpy Pants also went into the woods with his sprites, although much later.âI feel Caydâs lip
I feel the dragons relax as we sit. That doesnât mean that I feel safe enough to let Madelyn out of my reach, so I tuck her against my side, keeping an arm wrapped tightly around her. I stay quiet as she tells the story of what happened to her, how she got away, how she met me, and then of our experience in Araphyra. When sheâs done, they look at Torin and Avalon whose stories are nearly identical.âThere are two more. We left them in Araphyra. Theyâre younger and I think all of us felt the need to keep them where they are safe,â I tell them.Orsid, the leader, looks at me. âWhat was that thing you said about sprites. You mentioned it and then Madelyn mentioned it too.ââDo you not know that your forest is filled with sprites?â I ask them, amazed. They all look at each other again.âOur forest is haunted. Thatâs why weâve been safe from humans. They donât come here. Especially on windy days and nights, you can hear the ghosts voices on the wind,â Ronnon says.âThose are no ghosts,â I s
