Chapter 2: Madelyn

How did I ever get myself into his mess? Oh right, I fell for the wrong man. He was so attractive, so charming, until he wasn’t. He was a prince, until he became a nightmare. All those things you worry about as a kid, all the things that go bump in the night, they’re real. Werewolves are real. I know because I’ve been forced to live with them now for several months.

Alec was everything a young woman dreams of when she finds ‘the one’. He’s smart, charismatic, and he seemed to really be into me. We dated for a short time, but it was intense. He wanted to be around me all the time and I loved the attention. After a life in foster care, never having anyone who truly cared about me, I fell for it; hook, line, and sinker. In hindsight, he didn’t even have to give me that much attention. I thought he was being gentlemanly not wanting to sleep with me, but it turns out, he never wanted me for sex. He wanted a slave.

When he’d ‘confessed’ to being a werewolf, he said he wanted me to know everything about him before I decided to bind myself to him. He said he wanted to always be honest with me. So, I’d gone with him to the forest, and I’d watched him shift. I’d been shocked and terrified, but his wolf had come up and licked my cheek and it had been so much like the German Shepard I’d had in one of my foster homes, only much larger, that I hadn’t been afraid.

When he said he wanted to show me what his life was like, to see if I could be happy living with him, I’d agreed. He’d taken me to this pack and that’s where everything had changed. Rather than protecting me, he’s made me a slave, what he called an omega. I was told I couldn’t leave, ever, and I was forced to cook and clean for sixteen hours a day.

I was given no time to continue my studies, no time for anything but to serve the pack. The first time I tried to escape, he’d caught me, ran me down in his wolf form and literally dragged me back kicking and screaming. His father, the ‘Alpha’, had slapped me so hard across the face that I thought he broken my cheekbone.

“Just where do you think you’re going?” he’d snarled.

“I…I…I want to go home.”

“You are home,” he’d growled, and I’d been put in a room by myself without food or water for three days.

When they came for me, I felt like I was on the verge of death.

“Fuck! She’s human. We can’t leave her as long as the other omegas. Get her out, get her cleaned up and get some water in her,” I’d heard Alec saying.

I’d been dragged into my room, not much larger than a closet, and given food and water with the command to bathe and sleep before my shift the next morning.

And my horror had stared all over again. I learned quickly that humans are despised by the werewolves. We’re weak compared to the wolves and so they think less of us. I’m not sure why Alec chose me, maybe I was an easy target, maybe because I had no one to come looking for me, no one who cared if died. But either way, I knew if I didn’t find a way out of here, I’d remain a slave to this pack for the rest of my life.

It took a couple of months for me to finally get an opening. The pack was planning a party, inviting other packs to the come and celebrate. I think Alec was becoming Alpha and this is a big deal. I heard them talking about two of the last three Guardians accepting their mates and becoming Lunas, but since I had no idea what they were talking about, I didn’t really listen.

Instead, I began planning how I could get away. I know their senses are heightened, but I also know that Alec likes to have sex with pretty girls. He flirts with them then takes them to bed. His father is no different and since there will be a lot of she-wolves here tonight, all of the unmated males will be trying to get laid. It’s the best chance that I have to get away.

I’d been waiting for the right moment, when fate shined down on me. One of our pack’s she-wolves was making out with a wolf from another pack. He had her pressed against the wall in a hallway and he was so distracted that he didn’t notice that his keys fell out of his pocket. When they moved on, I grabbed the keys and put them into my pocket. I went to the side door, holding the keys and pressed the unlock button so I could find the car. There were patrols watching the cars, so I stayed out of sight, seeing which one flashed.

When it did, the patrols looked over, then snickered, talking about how the guy must be having a good time. I quickly rushed back to show my face a couple more times, pour more drinks for the wolves, and then excuse myself to go to the bathroom.

My window of opportunity is small, and I know I have to hurry. I rush out to the car, thankful that I’d pushed the unlock button earlier. I crawl in, not closing the door all the way. The patrols have moved away, flirting with some she-wolves from another pack. I decide to act as though I’m the owner of the vehicle and not race away. So, I get the seat set and turn the car on, quickly moving it out of the parking spot.

I see the patrols look over, but since I’m going at a normal pace, they don’t react, going back to talking to the she-wolves. I begin driving down the road, hopefully heading out of the pack lands. It’s been months and I was only on the road once, so I’m hoping this is the right way. The only thing I remember is turning right into the pack lands. So, I plan to turn left when I leave here.

When I get to the gate, I smile, but the patrol frowns. “Who are you?”

I don’t wait to try and answer, I hit the gas and take off. Almost immediately, I hear howls as wolves alert the others that I’ve escaped. I don’t stop, I keep driving as fast as I can, knowing that if I don’t get away this time, they’ll most likely kill me.

I drive until I come to a city. I need to get lost in the crowd and find somewhere to sleep. I have no idea where that might be and I realize that I have no money, no ID, nothing except the clothes on my back.

I get out and I begin to run, trying to find someplace to hide. I know they have a good sense of smell, but I’m hoping that the scents in the city will override my scent. I’ve barely made it a block when I hear tires screeching to a stop behind me. I begin running faster, terrified that I’ll get caught, that this time, they’ll kill me.

I turn, seeing Alec coming after me, fury on his face. I turn and run into a brick wall.

“Hello beautiful,” the wall, who is actually a man, says before strong arms come around me. He smells like buttery maple syrup.

The man pulls back, frowning down at me. I have a moment to wonder if this gorgeous man just walked off of the cover of a surfing magazine before my fear takes over.

“Please. Please help me!”

He looks past me and must see Alec and his goons coming for me. I’m almost positive that he growls, and he pushes me behind him.

There’s no reason for me to feel safe. I’m not at all safe. But, there’s something about this surfer-looking guy, something about the way that he just put himself in between me and Alec that has me feeling protected and safe if a way that I’m not used to.

“Who are you?” I hear Alec snarl.

“My name is Cayden Holstin. If you don’t want the wrath of the Guardians raining down on you like wildfire, I suggest you turn and walk away. NOW!” he snarls and crouches into what I know is a fighting stance.

Did he say Guardians? Isn’t that what Alec and his friends were saying before? Something about twins finding their mates? When the man, Cayden, crouches into a fighting stance, I don’t even have to duck to stay hidden behind him. Whether that was intentional on his part or he’s just that tall, I don’t know, but I stay behind him, my hands looping into the back of his pants. If Alec tries to tear me away, at least I have something to hold onto.“We just want the girl, Alpha Cayden. She’s part of our pack and she’s distraught. We need to get her home and take care of her.”Alpha? Oh no!“Distraught…” he says as if he’s rolling the word around in his head but it’s not making sense. “Yeah, I might go with terrified, not distraught, based on her scent. So, I’m guessing that whatever you boys did, she didn’t like it. She’s run from you and now she’s asked for my help. If you know who I am, then you know I won’t say no to helping her or anyone that asks for my assistance,” he growls.I’m not

My little mate is about as skittish as she can be. I’m not sure how she’ll feel about staying in my apartment, but it’s the safest place for her. As much as I want to know about her and what happened to her, I also feel the need to take care of her.‘WE feel the need to take care of her,’ Baron says.Baron has been thrashing in my head ever since that Alpha, his Beta, and the other warriors came charging after our mate. I don’t know why they want her or what they did to her, but I’ll be contacting Rich to find out everything he knows about Alpha Alec. Her stomach hasn’t stopped rumbling and it makes me wonder how long it’s been since she’s eaten. As we wait for the food, I casually look over her body, noticing the bruises, the scrapes, the dried and cracked skin on her fingers and the cracked fingernails with dried blood that look like she’s chewed them down to the quick. All of that is making it harder for me to keep Baron under control and to remain calm. But she’s a human. I need t

I’m not sure why this guy takes me asking him for help so seriously. I asked because I needed to get away from Alec. But he seems to be taking it to mean I need food, clothing, and a place to sleep. I do, but I don’t understand why this guy is making it his problem. He could have let me go after Alpha Alec walked away, but he didn’t.Since I learned my lesson, that trusting werewolves is dangerous to my well-being, I follow the guy, Cayden, when he goes to make a phone call. I hear him talking to others about coming here. I’m already outmatched with this guy, but if he has someone coming to get me, who knows where I’ll end up. It could be worse than what happened with Alpha Alec.I think quickly, rushing into the kitchen as quietly as I can. When I hear him call my name, I lift the pan over my head that was thankfully sitting on the stove. If I can just knock him out, even for a few minutes, I can get away. Once the others arrive, there will be no escape for me. As soon as I see his h

I grind my teeth as my mate breaks down into the most gut-wrenching sobs I’ve ever heard.‘Cayden, who is she?’ my brother asks in the mind link.‘My mate.’He nods, watching his mate and mine.“Come on. Why don’t we go into the other room and relax for a moment. Sometimes Alphas forget what a strong presence they have,” Emlyn says to Madelyn, gently scolding her mate. She turns and gives him a look before leading Madelyn into my bedroom and a moment later, I hear the water turn on.Rich gives her a contrite look before turning to me as they walk into the other room.“What pack?” Rich asks, gesturing for me to sit. “Oh, pizza. I’m starving.”“Help yourself. They’re wings, too,” I say as we sit. “Alpha Alec. Do you know him?”“Hmm,” he says, taking a bite of food as his eyes stare off while he thinks.‘Cayd, did you get her some clothes?’ Emlyn asks in the mind link.I hop up, grabbing the bag and a bottle of water and taking it into the bedroom.I see Madelyn sitting on the side of th

Emlyn’s story is remarkable. Everything she says sounds like it comes out of a fairy tale, well, except the part where Alpha Rich and Cayd’s mother was held by a vampire prince for years, and Emlyn’s mother was ejected from the pack by her father because he didn’t think she had a wolf, or that human hunters came to kill them. None of that sounds like a fairy tale, but the rest of it does.I learned that elves really do exist and one of their friends is the Queen of the Fae. Seriously, all the things that you grow up reading about, the fairy tales and the things that go bump in the night…every one of them really does exist. What I find the most interesting is the history of the Guardians and how, throughout time, they weren’t allowed to be with their fated mates because the Alphas wanted them for power. It wasn’t until their parents’ generation that Guardians were able to be with their fated mates and now, the Guardian line is being passed down genetically through the females. I guess

While I feel nearly incapacitated with my desire to help my mate but fearing that I would scare her, Xander swoops in to save the day.Since we’re all standing, I look at my mate. “I’m guessing horror movies aren’t your thing?”She shakes her head, no.“Maeve wouldn’t allow that in our house anyway. We’ll be lucky if we don’t have to watch some children’s witchy movie like Sleeping Beauty.”“Sleeping Beauty didn’t have witches,” Madelyn says, frowning.“Tell that to my mate. Those sprite things…what are they called, Cayd?”“Fairy godmothers,” I say, watching Madelyn. Her heart rate has gone down since Rich left. I’ll need to warn my father to monitor his Alpha aura around her. Maybe if I tell him to act like she’s one of the twins, he’ll get the picture. Of all of us, the twins, who look and act the most like our mother, have always been treated more gently than the rest of us.“My mate says the fairy godmothers aren’t fairies at all, they’re witches,” he says,

Except this isn’t my room. I frown, looking around and then it all comes flooding back. I escaped. I ran into Cayd. I met a Guardian, Cayd’s brothers, Xander’s mate, and we watched a movie.I must have fallen asleep during the movie. I certainly don’t remember coming back down to Cayd’s room. The only reason I know this is Cayd’s room is because I showered in here last night and I glanced around at his room, curious to see if he had any pictures of him and his girlfriend or mate. I was surprised at how happy it made me that he didn’t have any.He has lots of pictures of his family. It’s a big family and every one of them, every single one of them, is drop-dead gorgeous. She wanted me to kiss her,’ he says smugly.Damn arrogant wolf.‘I’m not arrogant. I was careful with her, but she’s obviously curious about me and apparently has no problem if I kiss her. You on the other hand…’ he says, laughing as we walk into the living room.I roll my eyes and go to open the door for my parents. When I do, my mother’s sweet smile brightens my day, just like it has for most of my life.“Cayden,” she says, opening her arms. “Hello, my son.” The only person that my mother loves more than her children is my father. Well, now maybe her grandbabies are starting to push us out too, I’m not exactly sure on that one.“Hello, Mother,” I say, enveloping her in a hug. My mother is a small woman, having been held by vampires when she was still a growing teenager. It stunted her growth, but not her strength.“Hey, Dad,” I say

My mother and my aunts apparently felt the need to make sure our new friends had clothes, so when we arrived back at the apartments, they had clothes waiting for them.“I don’t even know what to say about this,” Avalon says, looking shocked.“You don’t have to say anything. I don’t know how my body has the energy to go for so many hours, never needing a break, never needing to disconnect from my mate, but I don’t care. My only complaint is that the time went by much too quickly and before I knew it, Cayd was sliding out of me, showing me that the sun had started to rise.“We need to get back to the city today so we can head out west. It’s time for us to bring all of your dragon brethren home, Madelyn. Then, maybe next time, we can stay out here until you’ve had enough of me,” he says giving me that million-dollar smile.“Well then, you’d better prepare to spend the rest of your life here in the forest Cayden Holstin, because I will never have

How are you?” I ask him.“I’d be better if me mate wasn’t flittin’ around about having some male dragons around. What has he got that I haven’t got?” he asks irritably, his Irish accent becoming heavier with his frustration.“Height?” Madelyn asks innocently.“I think it was a rhetorical question, love,” I say to her as Buppig narrows his eyes at her.“Yeah, well, I’ve got it where it counts! Got her pregnant, didn’t I? I’m giving her a little sprite baby, aren’t I?”“Or possibly a leprechaun baby, Buppig. You know that Hyacinth loves you, unconditionally,” Anastasia says kindly.“Of course she does! You’re not questioning her love for you, are you, Buppig?” Madelyn asks.“Just because he’s big and warm, so what? I’m warm!” he huffs,

It feels good being back in Araphyra. I almost wish that this could be my home. Almost. But my home is with Cayd and he has a life back in the city and in the packs. And my life is with him.‘I promise we’ll visit frequently,’ Cayd says, sensing my thoughts.I smile at him as we all exit the van. King Aolis and Queen Lily are waiting for us.“Welcome dragons,” King Aolis says. As the others step forward and look around, I can sense the fae creatures moving toward us. I’m not sure if they are drawn to the magic of dragons, or if they are just excited to see more here in their homeland.“Whoa!” Tamsyn says. I turn and look at her, seeing that her body is glowing in a golden light.“Uh, what’s happening?” Silas asks, his body beginning to glow with a silver light.“Is this our magic?” Avalon asks in awe, her body glowing with her dragon's rose-gold color. Even Torin is glowing with a pewter glow.“You’re glowing too,” Cayd says, smiling as he looks over my body. I look down, surprised to

I wasn’t sure what to expect from our decorating party, but I wasn’t expecting to have as much fun as I did. Everyone seemed to have a wonderful time, my mate especially. After breakfast, half of us began decorating trees, while others began preparing dinner, and then others decorated the apartment.I had several moments where I stopped and looked around, recognizing that someday soon our apartment will be as large as Xander and Maeve’s, but that this, this happiness and chaotic fun, is going to be my life.“I know that look,” my father says walking up.“What look is that?” I ask, eating yet another Christmas cookie. They’re really good.“The look of a man who is seeing his future with the woman he loves.”“Yep, that’s exactly what I was thinking,” I say, smiling as my mate sings with the others who know the holiday songs playing on the television.“Now replace every one of these people with your pups or dragons babies and you’ll see what I saw in my future when I met your mother.”“Ma

Even without sleep, my body is humming with the pleasure that Cayd gives me. It’s like a constant adrenaline rush that keeps my body on a high so that I don’t feel the need to get as much sleep. When I get out of the shower, I smile, putting on the second dress that Cayd knew that I’d need. I bite my lip as I think about all the positions we were in while I was in and out of this dress. I lean down to get the shoes, not sure that my feet are ready for a day in these heels when Cayd’s strained voice stops me.“Baby, I love you. I love you so much, more than anything else in this entire world. If you love me at all, anywhere close to how much I love you, you won’t wear those shoes. I only have so much restraint and it’s going to be hard enough seeing you in that dress today with every memory of what I did to you while you were in it last night. Please, have mercy on your weak mate and don’t wear those shoes.”I giggle, and then, because I can, I run and leap into my mate’s arms. He catch

Lily is heading back to Araphyra to prepare for us to bring this first group of dragons home.Home. It’s a simple word and something that none of these descendants of dragons have had.
