"What are we supposed to do?!" Kourtney asked frantically, pivoting the steering wheel as it swirled down the road.
I looked back again. They were still shooting, as the bullet hitting the car sounded like a huge raindrop from the sky. Looking back at Kourtney, I held both the driver's and the shotgun seat as I shifted closer to them.
"Kourtney, stop the car," I demanded.
She pulled the shifter, as we stopped in the middle of the road. As soon as she pulled up, the guys trailing behind us also stopped. When the bullet hitting the car had ceased, our heavy panting filled the car. Ducking down, the incandescent headlight filtered through the window behind Kourtney's Audi, as silhouette started to approach the car we were in.
I slowly moved my hand inside the jacket I wore that cloaked the gun placed beside my jeans and pulled it out.
"Wha—"
I cut Kourtney off by shushi
It was as if the world had stopped and his voice kept playing in my head, repeatedly. My heart sank, and my hands began to shake. This was it, I was certain it was Dad's voice."Araulla, princess," Dad said again, the tenderness, and the crack in his voice was enough to assure that it was him.Tears streamed down my cheeks, as I held my shaking hand to my lips. I flitted my eyes towards Kourtney and Daniel who gave me an empathetic look.I couldn't believe it. I wasn't dreaming. Dad was calling me again, this was his voice."Oh my god, Dad?" I said, my tone was filled with yearning."Listen to me, Araulla," Dad responded, as he snorted, "I know a lot has happened to you, I'm really sorry for what's going on.""No," I stammered, tugging my lips to a smile. I wiped the tears off my cheeks and held back the sobs. "Don't apologize, Dad. I miss you so much."My
The moment I had seen my dad, I was relieved and every sign of hopelessness in my life vanished. It was replaced with an unexplainable feeling that lit up something in me. I couldn't quite put my finger on it, but I knew it felt good. His presence reassured me that everything would be okay, that our life would be better, and the dimmed hope I had was lit up.He was the only person I could see at this moment. I forgot that we were in an abandoned place because he made it beautiful here. He lit up like dawn, engulfing the darkness surrounding us.With my yearning and anticipation, I ran for Dad, holding my breath. Once I was in front, I wrapped my arms around him in a tight hug. Tears rolled down my eyes as I felt the warmth of a parent's embrace. This was what I'd been longing for. To feel that I was still a child, and to have a parent that would comfort me every time I was down. And Dad never failed to provide that."My princess," Dad said.I couldn't help the sobs daring to escape my
It had been three months since Dad's death, and I had been rotting inside this cell since Catherine had captured me. I was stuck with only a bunk bed and a vicinity of a toilet that I was too afraid to use. As I stayed here which seemed like forever, and I couldn't help wondering about what had happened; it still hadn't struck me.Dad was gone. I still couldn't believe it. The person I had been fighting for my whole life was already dead. It was all because of Catherine. She ruined us, and she took everything we had in just one snap. She overthrew Hansel in the company, killed Dad in front of my own bare eyes, and put me in this jail to make me suffer even longer. I detested being here, but there wasn't any way out.As the misery prolonged, I was starting to wonder what had happened to Hansel. If he was still alive or if he was captured by the Houstons. He hadn't visited me in this jail since the day we'd part ways because I'd escaped. I d

"Dad!" I called for him with my little voice and watched as he turned his back to face me.A smile appeared on his lips-- that bright smile that lit up like a dawn. His face was dazzling under the sun, and his eyes glinted in them. He was the only person that could make me run when I felt like the entire world was heaved on my shoulders. I called him my sanctuary, and I was his little princess.
Fighting over the things I didn't want to lose had pushed me to my limits. I had done mistakes, buried my old self, and reprogrammed who I was. My deepest fear had already faced me; I lost Dad. The most valuable person in my life was . . . dead. His death still hadn't struck me, and I didn't want to believe it. I had closed my eyes to unsee the occurrence that unfolded in front of me because I knew I was still a coward. I was hiding underneath the surface of myself, and losing in the game I had been fighting for had proved my fragility.
William plopped some files in front of me, as I stared at it while unwrapping the white cloth that was cloaking my hands. Tossing it on the ground, I reached for the file and flipped it open.We were sitting in front of the gym's huge table, and William was seated on the other side. He was watching me read the texts on the paper, elbows placed on the table and his hands were clasped together.

The whole ride on the way back to the hotel was quiet. We immediately left Paola’s house after the conversation we had, and Miguel didn’t choose to persuade her more for he understood her situation. All that I could do at that moment was empathize with her for her loss and we did everything we could to not make her feel bad about not helping us. Miguel also had told her to go to their mother which Paola instantly declined since she felt hesitant to show up to him. Then we all bid her goodbye along with Xavier.
“I met up with our father yesterday,” Miguel said and it received a baffled reaction from Paola. Her eyes widened and she stiffened on her seat as she stared at Miguel.
The next day, Gwen, Miguel, and I left the hotel in the afternoon along with William’s men. We would be heading to the person Miguel was referring to yesterday and we would try to talk to him or her about Fernando. To be honest, I was full of anticipation and I was being optimistic about the outcome. I wouldn’t deny, I was still a little nervous. We were inside the car and Miguel was in the driver’s seat. Gwen was sitting at the back while I was on the shotgun.
No one knows where the golds are, only your father, I repeated Fernando’s words in my head. I was certain that I knew where my father hid them, and he entrusted those to me that’s why I became the new keeper. Why did he come up to that conclusion? Did the Houstons know that I hid the golds?“You know that my father’s dead, right?” I said, my tone was laced with resentment. “And the treasure didn’t die along with him.”
Seeing Fernando sitting in front of me was probably one of the most unsettling feelings I’d ever had. I stared at him in awe, trying to hide the anxiousness I suddenly felt at the sight of him. He plastered a stoic face, and only two guards were standing on both sides of Fernando. I was right, he looked just like an Italian mafia boss in his early thirties. But I knew he was older than that, he just appeared younger because there weren’t any apparent wrinkles that formed on his face. I knew where Miguel had inherited his features, and I could already visualize how he would look like when he got old.
I was seated in front of these men who were gawking at me as if I was prey they needed to devour. There were five of them, and Fernando sat in the middle, contemplating. Beside Fernando was Dmitri, smiling mischievously like he was planning something sketchy. They’d locked William up in a chamber, and I was left alone because we got caught. We failed to conceal the secret between Arthur and William, and we were about to escape Mexico when we got caught by Fernando.
We got out of the car and moved closer to the house that looked just like a freaking castle. It was an old-style house, a bit outdated if you would ask me. But it was gorgeous, dark, and foreboding. It was the house you would expect a beast would live in. The house was surrounded by trees that there were dried leaves that scattered all over their unkempt lawn. The grass had grown tall, maybe because no one was staying here and no one looked out for their house. The hedges that ran along the front of their house also looked dehydrated, and they weren’t the luminescent green color we’d always had at our home. This looked more like a haunted mansion that no one would ever dare to stay here for long.
I was in a deep slumber for the entire ride that I hadn’t realized that we’d landed already. Though I’d already slept, it seemed like I had just blinked my eyes and now we were here. It was quick, about an hour or two rides that I honestly didn’t expect. Gwen had woken me up when we arrived and we quickly got off the plane. William’s men, who I barely communicate with, held our luggage. When I roamed my eyes around the place, we were taken to another hangar which wasn’t expected.
