Chapter 05

I went back in the house and saw Adam addressing our parents. ‘I have an announcement to make’. Everyone turned their attention towards him.

‘It’s regarding the marriage proposal. I won’t do it’. Paul stood up angry.

‘You will do no such thing boy’. Paul said.

‘Did Rosé do something?’ my dad asked glaring in my direction.

‘Why? What happened?’ Melody asked.

 ‘Can I just finish please?’ Everyone kept quiet for him to continue.

‘Before I say anything else Rosé had nothing to do with this it was entirely my decision’ he continued. ‘Yes I want to cancel it but that’s only because I want to win her heart first. I like her and I want her to marry me because she loves me not by anything else’. He said that last part while smirking at me.

A high pitch scream was heard from Melody. ‘I’m so proud of you. You’ve never taken initiative like this before’ she said while squeezing Adam in a hug. ‘She must really be special then’. ‘You have no idea’ he never stopped looking at me.

‘Well you’ve surprised me then son’ Paul said slapping his back a little breaking his gaze on me. ‘So tell me how do you plan to win her heart?’ Paul asked Adam.

‘Well the only way I know how’. He said looking at me again. ‘By being myself, I can’t win her over with material things. I’ll be myself and if she still didn’t accept me then we are just not meant to be’.

‘Awn I’m sure she will’ Melody said looking at me.

‘I can’t promise anything but I will try’ I said.

The dinner ended and the Wrights left. I went to my room and changed into my pajamas. I laid on my bed thinking about everything that has happened. Adam seems like he means well should I give him a chance? But what if he breaks my heart like Douglas it took me almost two years to get over him. I’m still not totally over him. I can still remember the pain I felt.

FLASH BACK

Douglas lived alone, his dad passed away some few years back and his mom was always on a business trips so he was always home alone. I’ve been there sometimes when I came over to hang out. But he wasn’t in school today when I called him earlier he said he wasn’t feeling well. I wanted to come over but he said that wasn’t necessary. But what kind of girlfriend would I be if I didn’t care for him when he was sick. So I went anyways.

I wanted to surprise him so I went and bought him soup and came up to his house. I used the spare key he gave me in case I needed to get in. I warmed up the soup in his kitchen, put it in a bowl and made my way to his room.

I heard sounds coming out of his room and a groan. Wow it must be worst then I thought. I knocked on the door then opened it.

‘Doug?’ I called out.

But then I saw him naked in bed and Regina on top of him, their clothes sprawled out everywhere on the floor. My eyes then made contact with him again. Tears begin to flow from my eyes. ‘Babe’ he tried calling out to me.

The bowl dropped from my hands I went to the kitchen and started grabbing my things I was three steps outside the front door when a hand held mine. I turned around. Douglas held my hand. He was only in his boxers.

‘Wait, please let me explain’.

‘Are you serious there’s nothing to explain, I caught my boyfriend and someone who I thought was my friend in the same bed what more of an explanation do I need to see that you cheated’. I yelled at him while angry tears rolled down my face.

‘I know this looks bad but I – but what? I love you was that what you wanted to say? There’s nothing you can do to fix this Douglas, NOTHING!’

END OF FLASHBACK

That was a very hard time for me, am I really ready to let someone in again. My mind then drifted to Aidan. The way those blue green eyes of his turned to a darker shade. Was she seeing things or was it just the lighting that made his eyes seem that way. He was really concerned over who hurt me. Why, did he like me? Of course not he was probably trying to be a concerned boss.

My brain finally gave up all its thoughts and I drifted to sleep. My alarm rung at 7:00 I woke up did my daily routine and went downstairs to have my breakfast. While eating I heard rainbow barking outside. Come to think of it she didn’t sleep in my room last night she always like sleeping with me.

I went outside and saw her locked up in her kennel. Who put her there? I already knew the answer. I opened the door and she ran out probably happy to be free.

Back in the kitchen I poured food and water for her which she gobbled up in seconds. My parents came down from their room. ‘Good morning mom, morning dad’. I greeted.

‘Morning my dear’ my mom replied.

‘Morning’ my dad said getting a cup of coffee.

‘Dad you forgot to release bow from her kennel yesterday’ I said calling rainbow by her nickname.

‘Oh sorry chipmunk I forgot’.

‘Try not to forget next time she could have starved’.

‘I made sure she ate before she went in. She’s a tough dog, don’t worry’.

‘Alright, I have to go now see you guys later’ I said to my parents while patting bow’s head.

‘Have a great day honey’ my mom said.

Getting into my car I drove to work. On entering the building I saw Wayne standing by my desk.

‘Good Morning sir’ I greeted.

‘Good Morning and please call me Wayne’.

I sat on my chair. ‘Ah, ah, you are no longer working here’ he said. I was confused. ‘What do you mean? Am I fired?’ I asked panicking a little as far as I know I didn’t do anything to deserve being fired.

‘No, calm down you misunderstand me. I meant your no longer working as a receptionist. We are moving you to a new position’. Wayne said.

I let out the air I was holding. ‘If that’s the case what’s my new position?’ I asked.

‘Well that’s – oh Regina may I have a word with you’. Wayne called out to Regina who just entered the building.

Regina walked up to us. A frown appeared on her face on seeing me standing behind Wayne but she quickly masked it with a smile.

‘Yes?’ she asked.

‘You’re being reassigned to a new position’ he told Regina. Her eyes opened so wide that I thought it was going to fall out of its socket.

‘What! Why?’ Regina asked.

‘Mr. Aidan’s orders’ he replied. ‘Anyways you’ll be the new receptionist for the company’.

‘What receptionist? Then who is taking the role of Mr. Aidan’s assistant?’ she asked.

‘That will be Rosé’ Wayne said turning towards me.

‘Me?’ ‘Her?’ We both asked at the same time.

‘Yes now to your stations’ he said clapping his hands.

‘No I’m not going to accept it. She can’t be Mr. Aidan’s assistant’ Regina spat.

‘And why is that?’ A voice said from behind her. I didn’t need to look to know who that voice belonged to. That deep, charming voice belonged to the one and only Aidan Walker.

Aidan walked up to us. ‘Sir may I ask as to why I am suddenly being replaced by her?’ Regina pointed at me.

Aidan didn’t like the way he addressed her but he didn’t show it.

Aidan turned to Regina. ‘You are being replaced because I need someone reserved, someone who does not find joy in riling up other workers and someone so dedicated she wouldn’t forget to schedule dates for my meetings’.

She gasped at the last one.

He held his phone which showed his call log and a name on it. ‘He called me personally yesterday when he couldn’t reach you thinking I refused to meet with him’.

‘I’m so sorry sir it slipped my mind’ Regina said trying to come up with an excuse.

‘I could have lost and important client because of your carelessness. You should be grateful I didn’t just fire you on the spot’.

‘Wayne, perform a proper orientation with her’.

‘Yes sir’ Wayne said.

Aidan turned towards Regina. ‘And you, the attitude you have towards the customers and clients who walk through that door’ he said pointing at the entrance ‘Can affect the company’s success so I advise you be on your best behavior’.

‘Yes sir’ she said.

‘Now go and clear your belongings from your previous desk’.

Regina left and Wayne went into his office. Aidan turned towards me, his expression softened.

‘Come’ he said walking away.

‘I’m assuming you know what the role of an assistant entails?’ Aidan said as we got into an elevator.

‘Well as the name entails I assist you and manage your office, organize your meetings by booking facilities and meeting rooms, manage your calls and emails and prioritize which ones that are of importance to you’. I said listing off the duties.

‘Not bad do you have experience working as an assistant?’ he asked.

‘No I don’t’.

‘Well that’s alright we all have to start somewhere’. I was surprised. He still let me work even when I had no work experience.

‘In any case you’ll be doing that and more’ he said then the elevator door opened and he started walking out.

‘I don’t understand, more?’ I asked confused.

‘You’re not going to be just my assistant’. He turned around to face me.

‘You’ll be my personal assistant’.
