Isabel’s POV

The crisp autumn air slipped through the barely open door, sending a chill under my robe and up my spine. I folded my arms tightly around myself, standing in the doorway, facing the psychiatrist.

I hesitated. Letting a stranger into my home—especially one I hadn’t asked for—felt intrusive. But standing here, shivering in the cold, wasn’t exactly productive either.

"Alright, well... come in," I finally said, stepping aside. "I just need a moment to get more... presentable."

Dr. Hensley gave a small nod, stepping inside. "Of course, Miss Sullivan. Take your time."

I closed the door behind him and walked upstairs, my thoughts racing. Emerson had sent this doctor without telling me.

Did he really think I needed professional help? Was I unraveling so much that he didn’t trust me to handle things on my own?

I took my time changing, pressing my hands against my temples in an attempt to clear my mind. The last thing I needed was to seem defensive or unstable in front of a psychia

Isabel’s POVEmerson left early the next morning. His goodbye lingered longer than usual, as if he wasn’t quite convinced I’d be okay without him. I assured him I would be. After all, I wasn’t alone—I had Liam and Elena to keep me busy. And, of course, Lila. The next few days passed in an odd sort of blur. Lila was... restrained. Almost too restrained. She moved quietly through the house, speaking only when spoken to, never lingering too long in any room where the children or I were. It was as if she was deliberately making herself scarce, and that should have reassured me. But instead, it unsettled me more.Had I been wrong about her? Was my paranoia making me see things that weren’t there? My own condition was another concern. My anxiety was getting worse by the day, even though there was no tangible cause. Despite my reluctance to take the prescribed medicine, I forced myself to follow the routine. And to my surprise, it helped. The constant edge of anxiety dulled, and my heart

Isabel’s POVI let out the breath I had been holding as Lila and the gardener continued their hushed conversation. My heart pounded against my ribs, the sound deafening in my ears. She hadn’t seen me. Thank goodness.I swallowed hard and pressed my back against the cold brick wall, straining to hear every word.Stealing another glance around the corner, I saw Lila retrieve a thick wad of cash from the pocket of her coat. She handed it to the gardener, who accepted it with an almost smug expression."You really should’ve paid me sooner," the gardener said, stuffing the money into his pocket. "I had to lie low for a while. Do you know how hard that was?"Lila rolled her eyes, crossing her arms. "You got what you wanted, didn’t you? The job isn’t finished yet. I might have something else for you soon."The gardener raised an eyebrow. "More risks? I thought burying that damn watch was the last of it. You know, making me take the fall was a clever trick, but I ain’t doing this forever."I

Emerson’s POVI was finally done sorting things out on my work trip in Sweden. The crisp Scandinavian air had been invigorating. But I’d barely had time to register the incredible beauty of my surroundings. As I strode through the airport, my mind was occupied by one thought only: getting home. The past week had been exhausting, a whirlwind of negotiations and damage control. But it was finally over. As I stepped into the priority boarding line, I allowed myself a brief moment to imagine bringing Isabel and the kids here one day. The snow-tipped mountains, the breathtaking fjords—it would be a perfect getaway.Shifting my carry-on to his other hand, I pulled out my phone and dialed Isabel’s number. I let it ring. I waited, and waited. After what felt like an eternity, the call went straight to voicemail. Frowning, I tried again, and again. Still, no answer.A bad feeling settled in my gut. Something didn’t sit right with me. I quickly scrolled through my contacts and called Marianne

Isabel’s POVI was jolted awake by a loud crash. My heart pounded against my ribs as my mind struggled to catch up with my body’s sudden alertness. The door had burst open, and through my blurry vision, I saw Marianne and one of the house servants standing there. Their faces were filled with worry."Miss, are you alright?!" Marianne's voice was breathless, her hands clutching the doorframe as if she'd been running.I blinked, rubbing the sleep from my eyes. My head felt thick with drowsiness, and a yawn escaped before I could stop it. "What…? What's going on?"Marianne hesitated before stepping closer. "You weren’t answering your phone. Mr. Williams called. He sounded anxious. He asked me to check on you. When you didn’t answer the door, he told me to break it open."Her words took a moment to sink in. I looked past her to see my door hanging slightly off its hinges. "You broke my door?""We thought something happened! You’ve been sleeping for far too long, Miss. You never sleep at th

Isabel’s POV“Lila?"My voice cut through the silence of the room, reminding her that I’d asked her a question. But she didn’t react for a few seconds. I watched her carefully, taking in the slight twitch of her fingers as they rested against the tray she was holding. Her expression was unreadable as usual. But something about it unsettled me—like she was caught between two emotions. An odd mixture of anxiety and triumph flickered behind her eyes. As if my memory loss was something to celebrate and fear all at once. She hesitated just a moment too long before answering. “You were dealing with work last night.”I frowned. “And then?”“You had a sudden headache,” she continued, her voice smooth but slightly rehearsed. “So you took some pills. I assumed it was from stress.”I stared at her, willing my mind to recall anything from last night… Nothing. It was like hitting a wall—no images, no snippets of conversation, just a frustrating void. Could that really be all that happened? A h

Isabel’s POVI rushed down the stairs, the cool wooden floor pressing against the soles of my bare feet. The nightgown I’d thrown on clung to me like a second skin. The hem fluttered slightly with each hurried step. The soft, silk fabric did nothing to shield me from the cold evening air. But the chill didn't matter. I had to find out what was wrong with Emerson. Why did he sound so panicked? As I reached the bottom of the stairs, I spotted him in the entryway. The moment I saw him standing there, disheveled and breathless, something stirred deep inside of me.Had I… missed him? No. My emotions had been all over the place lately. This… whatever this feeling was… was probably just a side effect of the medication. His eyes darted around the room with an intensity that made my heart race. When he saw me, a visible shudder ran through him.“Isa!” He gasped my name, his voice raw. The panic in his eyes shot through me like an electric current.“What’s wrong?” I asked, my voice shaky. Emerson’s POVSeeing Isabel like this felt like the world had split open beneath my feet, leaving me suspended in a void of helplessness. The woman I loved, the woman who had always been a pillar of strength and clarity, was unraveling right in front of me. In another time, another life, I might have noticed the way her nightgown clung to her body, the soft curve of her hips, the gentle slope of her collarbones. I hadn’t seen her like this in… too long. But not now. Not when she looked so fragile. So lost. Her usual radiance was dimmed, clouded by confusion and fear. All I could do was hold her.I pulled her into my arms, wrapping her tightly against me. Her warmth was a balm to the cold panic creeping through my chest. I stroked her hair, just like I used to when we were still together—back when life hadn’t been so full of uncertainties. I tried to steady her. But more than that, I tried to steady myself.“It’s okay, Isa. Don’t force yourself,” I whispered, my voice low, soothing.I

I just thought you should know,” she said, lowering her eyes in a picture of demure humility.I narrowed my eyes, studying her carefully. Her resemblance to Isabel was uncanny, almost unsettling. At first glance, I had to admit, there had been something striking about her—an allure that was difficult to ignore. But looking closer, something felt off. There was an artificiality to the way she moved. The way expressions flitted across her face like they weren’t truly hers. Her smile, in particular, unsettled me. It never quite reached her eyes, never carried the warmth that Isabel’s did. It was too calculated, too controlled. As if she were mimicking emotions rather than feeling them. And why was she so quick to label Isabel’s condition as mental illnes

Isabel’s POVVictoria’s words sent a shiver down my spine, cold dread pooling in my stomach. Robert and I exchanged bewildered looks, a silent conversation passing between us. “What are you implying, love?” Robert asked, his voice wavering slightly.Victoria inhaled deeply, as if weighing her words. “A few weeks ago, I encountered a peculiar case at the hospital. A child was brought in—no identification, no guardian, nothing.”“Okay… So what does this have to do with me?” I asked, struggling to stay patient as she shared her story. I felt anxious and needed to get to my appointment.“Getting there,” Victoria said, her smile gentle with a hint of pity. “He was unresponsive at first, just lying there as if in a trance. Then, when he finally came to… something was off.”Robert frowned. “Off how?”Victoria’s lips pressed into a thin line. “He didn’t remember anything. His own name, where he came from—gone. And it wasn’t just amnesia. His emotions were erratic, almost as if they weren’t hi

Isabel’s POVI stared at my own reflection in the mirror. I gripped the edge of the bathroom sink as if it were the only thing keeping me tethered to reality. My eyes were swollen, my face pale and drawn. This wasn't me. Not the woman who had fought so hard to reclaim her life. Not the woman who had returned to Rivermont with confidence, stronger than ever before. And yet, here I was—helpless, unraveling, drowning in my own mind.Terror clawed at my chest. My memory was slipping through my fingers like sand, moments vanishing before I could grasp them. The worst part wasn’t even the gaps—it was the fear that I wouldn’t know what was real anymore. If I couldn’t trust my own thoughts, then what was left of me? The tumor had been terrible, yes, but at least I had known what I was up against. This... this was something far more insidious. Was I losing my mind? Would I wake up one day not knowing who I was?A big, warm hand settled on my shoulder. I turned, my eyes meeting Emerson’s. H

But I quickly squashed it, locking my jaw and focusing on the task at hand.“You think I’m blind?” I spat out, trying to wriggle free from his embrace. My arms strained against his iron grip, but he was relentless. He only held me tighter, his hands firm, his chest pressing against mine. I could feel the warmth of his body, but it was a warmth I no longer trusted.I struggled against him again, fury rising in my chest, forcing the words from my lips. “Stop pretending, Emerson! I heard everything. You and Lila… you’re a match made in heaven, aren’t you?”The accusation hung in the air, thick and suffocating. I could feel my heart pounding, the throb of it echoing in my ears. I waited for the shock, the guilt, the admission. I wanted to see him squirm. I wanted to see him crack. But inst

Isabel’s POVI curled up under the duvet, my arms wrapped tightly around my trembling body as another wave of intense palpitations surged through me. My heart pounded so violently against my ribs that I thought it might shatter. I squeezed my eyes shut. Trying to block out the world. Trying to drown out the muffled voices beyond the bedroom door—but they seeped through anyway, slicing through my defenses like a blade through silk.Lila’s voice was sickeningly sweet, oozing with faux concern.“I know a psychologist who specializes in cases like this, Mr. Williams,” she murmured. “Someone discreet, professional. She might be able to help Miss Isabel… and help you as well.”My stomach twisted violently. Help me? My fingers curled into the sheets, knuckles whitening. She was doing it again—planting seeds of doubt. She was weaving a narrative where I was nothing more than a fragile, unstable woman in need of treatment.I forced myself to take a shaky breath. I had to clear my thoughts. I

Isabel’s POVI locked the bedroom door behind me and pressed my forehead against the cool wood, my breath uneven. My hands were still shaking from the way I had snapped at Liam and Elena. I couldn’t let myself get close to them again until I had a handle on whatever was going on with me.The guilt clung to me like a second skin, suffocating and inescapable. I had never raised my voice at them before. What was happening to me?A soft knock at the door broke through my tangled thoughts.“Isa?” Emerson’s voice was calm but laced with concern. “Please open the door. We need to talk.”I squeezed my eyes shut, my fingers curling into fists at my sides. Talking wouldn’t change the way I felt. Talking wouldn’t erase the look of fear on Liam’s face or the uncertainty in Elena’s eyes.“I just need to be alone,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper.Emerson sighed, his frustration evident even through the heavy wooden door. “Isabel, locking yourself away isn’t the answer. Isabel’s POVThe cool sterility of the hospital room made my skin prickle. I sat stiffly on the examination table, my fingers gripping the edge as the doctor studied my latest scan. He hadn’t stopped watching me since we arrived. His concern was palpable, but it only made my skin feel tighter. As though I were being scrutinized under a microscope. Finally, the doctor turned to me. “Your brain scan looks completely normal. Structurally, there’s nothing concerning.”I let out a slow breath, relief washing over me for a moment—only to be replaced by lingering unease. If my brain was fine, then what was wrong with me?The doctor leaned forward slightly, his voice calm, measured. “You mentioned some adverse reactions since your surgery. Can you describe them?”I nodded. “I recovered well overall. The only lingeri
