Isabel’s POV

When I stepped out of the bathroom, the three bodyguards were waiting. Their eyes scanned me with suspicion. I plastered on a casual smile, pretending not to notice their scrutiny.

“I’m heading to see a gynecologist,” I said lightly, adding a pointed look as I continued walking past them. “Do you really need to follow me for that?”

They exchanged glances, uncertainty flickering across their faces. One of them finally spoke, “We have to check with the boss.”

Of course. Emerson.

I crossed my arms, impatience bubbling up inside me. One of the guards pulled out his phone. His voice was a low murmur as he relayed my request. After a short conversation, he turned to me and handed over the phone.

“He wants to speak to you.”

I rolled my eyes and took the phone, bringing it to my ear. “What is it, Emerson?” I asked, letting my annoyance slip into my tone.

His voice came through the line, tight with frustration. “What’s going on, Isabel?”

I paused, knowing exactly how to frame my r

Isabel’s POVThe phone rang incessantly in my hand, vibrating like a heartbeat. Emerson’s name flashed on the screen, demanding my attention. I could almost sense his impatience seeping through the device. My thumb hovered over the green button, but I couldn’t bring myself to answer just yet. Not now.I needed a moment to think. If this had been a few days ago, I wouldn’t have hesitated. I would’ve used this exact moment—this opportunity—to slip away from Emerson’s grip. As far as possible from the life of constant surveillance and control. I had spent too long in the grip of powerful men, waiting for the right window to escape, knowing that my time was slipping away like sand through my fingers. But now, everything had changed.“The tumor hasn’t grown.” Robert’s news had been like a sudden, unexpected crack of light in the darkness. The results from the secret examination still echoed in my mind. The tumor was no longer spreading, and there was even the chance of improvement. A pos

Isabel’s POVI sat in the waiting room of the private hospital, my mind still reeling from the good news about my tumor. But my thoughts were quickly overshadowed by Emerson’s angry, suspicious voice.“I couldn’t answer the phone during my gynecologist examination now, could I?” I said smoothly, even though I could feel my nerves rising. It was a lie, but a necessary one. There was a pause on the other end of the line. Emerson’s voice, when it came, was tight, still edged with suspicion. “Well… Why did it take so long?”I swallowed, quickly coming up with an explanation. “There are some complications because of the miscarriage,” I said softly, adding just enough vulnerability into my tone to disarm him. “I’m still awaiting the results, but they might have to run additional tests and treatments.”I wanted to plant the seed of a future cover—an excuse for any medical visits that Robert would arrange for me. This was all about buying time, staying under the radar while I figured out what

Isabel’s POVI scooped Liam off the floor just in time, as the heavy bookshelf came crashing down behind us. I felt a sharp sting as the shelf scraped against my arm. But the pain was nothing compared to the terror that gripped me just moments before. If I had been a second later, the shelf would have crushed him.The sound of the crash brought Emerson and two maids rushing into the hallway. I sat on the floor, my arms wrapped tightly around a trembling Liam, as the heavy cupboard lay sprawled beside us.“Isabel! What happened?” Emerson’s voice was laced with panic as he knelt down beside me, his eyes scanning the chaotic scene.Still catching my breath, I managed to explain. “He pulled the shelf down... it was falling... I just grabbed him in time.” My voice trembled, my pulse still racing from the near disaster.Emerson’s face softened, relief flooding his features. “You saved him, Isa…” His voice was quiet, almost reverent. He crouched down beside me, staring at Liam as if the real

Isabel’s POVKiss me? The words echoed in my mind, twisting my gut in disgust. Every fiber of my being recoiled. But I quickly remembered the delicate game I was playing. If I wanted to win Emerson over, to buy my freedom bit by bit, I couldn’t let my true feelings show. Not now. Not after I’d spent days carefully maintaining peace between us. The only way to get what I wanted was through calculated patience.I forced a smile, gentle but firm. "I don’t think that’s a good idea right now," I said, keeping my voice calm.Emerson blinked, caught off guard. I’d never seen him speechless before. He stammered, “Oh… okay, sorry… It’s just—I thought—”The sight of him stumbling over his words would’ve been almost comical if the situation weren’t so dire. It was strange seeing this side of him—vulnerable, unsure. For years, he’d been nothing but cold, controlling, calculating. Now he stood before me, clearly embarrassed. As if he wasn’t sure how to proceed."It’s fine," I said, adjusting the

Emerson’s POVI stared at Isabel, trying to make sense of what she’d just said. My mind spun in confusion, uncertainty gripping me tighter than I cared to admit. Did she really mean it? If I found a doctor for her father, she might... kiss me? The idea sparked something deep inside me—a jolt of excitement I hadn’t expected. But it also brought a flood of emotions I wasn’t prepared for. Ones I wasn’t supposed to feel.Swallowing hard, I nodded. “I’ll find him,” I said before I turned and left the room. Isabel’s words echoed in my mind as I made my way through the villa. The next morning, as I prepared to leave for work, I couldn’t shake the image of Isabel from my mind. The way she’d tied my tie the day before, her fingers moving with a delicate tenderness I hadn’t felt in years, lingered like a ghost. Before everything had gone wrong between us, Isabel had always been the one to pick out my suits. To make sure everything was in order before I stepped out the door. She had cared for

Isabel’s POVThe villa felt emptier than usual tonight. Emerson hadn’t come back since he left for work, and I hadn’t heard a word from him all day. At any other time, his silence would be inconsequential. Perhaps even peaceful. But tonight, it stirred an uneasy feeling that settled deep in my chest, filling every quiet corner of the house. Something was wrong. I couldn’t shake the nagging thought.I lay in bed, the hours ticking by as I tried to force myself to sleep. But I kept replaying the last conversation we’d had. I had practically dangled myself as a reward for him finding a doctor for my father. A kiss held out like a promise I wasn’t sure I’d ever keep. Was I making a mistake? Was manipulating him the right way to get what I needed?A sigh escaped me. I turned over in bed, pulling the covers tightly around me, hoping that sleep might finally claim me. But each time I closed my eyes, I saw Emerson’s face. The way his eyes had softened when I adjusted his tie. The confusion

Isabel’s POVThe butler and I struggled to get Emerson to his feet. I steadied Emerson as best I could. My arm was wrapped around his waist while the butler supported him from the other side. His weight pressed heavily against me. The heat radiating from him was tinged with a discomforting dampness. My hand brushed against his arm, and I felt the sticky warmth of fresh blood seeping through the bandage. A pang of concern tightened my chest; he must’ve been losing blood for hours. As soon as we had eased him onto the couch, the butler hurried to contact the private doctor. He muttered reassurances about discretion. I could barely focus, though. My eyes were fixed on Emerson’s blood-soaked arm. The crimson stain was spreading across the fabric. There was something terribly wrong here. The doctor arrived swiftly. The man looked too calm given the urgency of the situation. He unwrapped the bandage carefully, revealing a wound deep and raw. “A puncture wound,” he explained. His expressio

Isabel’s POV“Emerson,” I began, but the words felt trapped in my throat. Was he serious? Did he expect me to kiss him right here, right now? Was he using his vulnerability to manipulate me?“You don’t have to say anything now, Isa.” He tilted his head, that glimmer of satisfaction in his eyes intensifying. “But… tomorrow morning, perhaps?” His smile held a lingering challenge. One that made my stomach twist in a way I wasn’t sure I liked. I was angry at his frivolity, yet I couldn’t allow myself to lose my temper with Emerson. Not while he was in this state. My mind raced. It was all too confusing, too layered with unspoken feelings.“Perhaps…” I said evenly, hoping he wouldn’t press further. And he didn’t. He closed his eyes instead, his pain and exhaustion obvious. “Good night, Emerson,” I said as I retreated quietly.“Night, Isa,” I heard his weak voice behind me.As I returned to my room, the silence enveloped me. But sleep still eluded me. My mind was racing with thoughts. Wha

Isabel’s POVCarter first sent a team of soldiers to probe the enemy’s defenses. The plan was simple: test the waters, gauge their numbers, and avoid unnecessary bloodshed before reinforcements arrived. But what they found was far worse than expected.“These are not just Alistair’s usual lackeys,” Carter murmured, lowering his binoculars. “The numbers far exceed our expectations. And what’s worse: these men are seasoned fighters. Most of them have appeared on international wanted lists… multiple times.”Emerson, standing beside him, clenched his fists. “That bastard really went all in.”I narrowed my eyes, straining to make out the details from our vantage point on the rocky hillside. The sun hung low in the sky, casting long shadows over the rugged terrain. The distant compound was a maze of dilapidated buildings, high fences, and scattered patrols. From here, it was impossible to tell how many men were stationed inside. But it was clear we were up against more than just a handful

Sebastian/Elias’s POVI stood there, rooted to the spot, watching the scene unfold before me. The sterile, cold walls of the laboratory pressed in around me.Alistair’s voice broke the silence, a hint of pride echoing through his words. “This is my proudest work! Thanks to your potions, Scarlet.” His tone was a mix of admiration and satisfaction, as if he had just achieved the culmination of a long and arduous project.Scarlet’s gaze flickered to me, her sharp eyes assessing the situation with cold precision. There was no mistaking it: she was shocked I hadn’t escaped yet. She must be wondering if her antidote had failed. Then, without warning, she lunged forward, grabbing Alistair by the collar with a force that was both unexpected and dangerous. Her voice was low, a warning laced with venom. “I’m telling you, don’t touch my nephew! Otherwise, I’ll make sure you never stand again!” Her words were like a promise, a threat wrapped in maternal protection. But there was something more

  • His Betrayal, His Regret   Chapter 434 - Preparing for War

Emerson’s POVI sat in the car, fingers drumming absently against the steering wheel as my mind churned through everything that had happened. The weight of it all pressed down on my shoulders like an iron grip. Lilith’s confessions, Elias’s predicament, the looming confrontation with Alistair—it was a tangled mess of threats and uncertainties. Every second that passed only heightened the tension coiling in my chest.A sharp knock on the window pulled me from my thoughts. I turned to see Carter standing outside, his sharp gaze scanning the area. I rolled the window down, and he wasted no time.“I heard you caught a woman? How is she involved in this?” he asked, his voice even but laced with curiosity.I exhaled and nodded, stepping out of the vehicle. My eyes swept the surroundings instinctively, old habits keeping me cautious even in relatively safe zones. Carter caught on immediately.“Margot’s with Isabel back at the base,” he assured me. “We can talk there.”I gave him a curt nod,

Isabel’s POVWe delayed our mission. Lilith's intel might be significant and give us clues on how to proceed. In the interrogation room, Lilith sat handcuffed to the chair, her face twisted with a mixture of defiance and resignation. I stood behind the mirrored glass, my arms crossed tightly over my chest, trying to steady my breathing. Emerson and one of his men sat across from her, their expressions unreadable. The tension in the room was thick, palpable."Talk," Emerson commanded, his voice cold.Lilith smirked, leaning back as if the shackles meant nothing to her. "Where do I begin?" she mused, tilting her head. "Maybe with the fact that I was Lila all along?"My stomach dropped. I clenched my fists, forcing myself to stay rooted to the spot. I knew it. But I’d never expected to hear her say it aloud. My mind reeled as Lilith continued."Alistair took me after you thought I’d died," she said, her tone shifting into something bitter. "He changed me—physically, mentally. His damned

Isabel’s POVCarter and Emerson bent over the map, their voices low but intense as they laid out the plan. The dimly lit tent smelled of sweat, gun oil, and the anticipation of an impending fight. My fingers tightened into fists at my sides. I refused to be left behind.“We move in small teams,” Carter was saying. “Margot and I will take a group to circle around and cover you. The reinforcements are still a few hours out, so we’ll have to be careful.”Emerson nodded, his expression unreadable. “I’ll lead a team ahead to scout their positions.”“I’m going with you.” The words left my mouth before I could second-guess them.Emerson’s head snapped toward me, his brows furrowing. “No. It’s too dangerous.”I squared my shoulders. “I didn’t train for years on that island just to sit in the shadows while you go off to fight. I’m stronger than ever now, and you know it.”He exhaled through his nose, his fingers flexing at his sides as if fighting the urge to grab my arm and shake some sense i

Isabel’s POVI couldn’t shake the image of Eric’s disappointed eyes from my mind. The way he had looked at me—like I was making the worst mistake of my life—had been haunting me ever since I rejected his offer.Although returning home with him and bringing the twins sounded like a dream, I couldn’t risk any danger following us.“Isabel, do you even hear yourself?” Eric had asked, his voice thick with disbelief. He gestured at Emerson. “Haven’t you learned your lesson with him?”I had known this conversation would be difficult, but seeing the pain on his face still cut deeper than I had expected. To him, my decision wasn’t just reckless—it was a betrayal. He had spent so much time trying to protect me, trying to give me an escape, only for me to walk right back into the fire.“This isn’t about Emerson,” I had explained, forcing my voice to remain steady. “It’s about unfinished business, Eric. I can’t leave Rivermont. Not yet.”He exhaled sharply, shaking his head. “Isabel, I’m begging

Sebastian/Elias’s POVScarlet’s voice was razor-sharp, slicing through the tension-laden air. “I never meant for my nephew to be dragged into your web of danger, Alistair.” Her eyes burned with a fury I hadn’t seen before. Yet there was something else lurking beneath it—regret. Guilt.Alistair, as always, was unimpressed. He gave a dismissive wave, his mouth curling into an infuriating smirk. “Spare me the theatrics, Scarlet. He dragged himself into this when he started meddling with my operation. You want to play the remorseful aunt now? Too late.” His gaze turned to me, and his voice took on a condescending edge. “You should be thanking her, Elias. She’s the one who made those delightful little concoctions running through your veins.”Scarlet stiffened, but she didn’t deny it. “I never gave you permission to use them on my family members.“And since when do I ask for permission?” Alistair sighed, as if the conversation bored him. “Since you’re so concerned, why don’t you give him

Sebastian/Elias's POVThe basement was the same as ever—cold, damp, and stinking of rust and decay. Dust swirled in the dim light from the single flickering bulb, casting erratic shadows on the cracked stone walls. But this time, I wasn’t the one in chains.“Kill him.” Alistair’s voice was sharp and commanding, his outstretched hand pointing at a young man kneeling a few feet away. He couldn’t have been much older than nineteen, his face drawn and gaunt from fear. His chains rattled as he tried to inch backward, but there was nowhere to run. Nowhere to hide.I didn’t hesitate.I lunged forward, my foot connecting with his chest before he could react. He crumpled to the ground with a strangled gasp. Without missing a beat, I dropped to one knee, my hands locking around his throat. His pulse fluttered beneath my fingers, his breath hitching as I tightened my grip.He struggled—weakly at first, then more desperately, his fingers clawing at my wrists. But I was stronger. Faster. Lilith’s POV"What? You want to change back to your old face?"The woman in front of me didn't even look up as she spoke, her voice laced with contempt and utter boredom. She was in her fifties, yet not a single wrinkle marred her flawless skin. Her body, toned and striking, was a testament to her wealth and vanity. She sat elegantly on the edge of a metal counter, her fingers idly playing with a small vial of serum. The dim, sterile light of the underground lab reflected off the glass, casting eerie patterns across the walls.I clenched my fists. Of course, she wouldn’t take me seriously—not at first. But I was done playing games."I’ve completed the task my father gave me," I said, my voice steady, though my stomach twisted with unease. "I no longer want to bear this disgusting face."That got her attention. Scarlet finally turned to face me, a slow, amused smirk curling her lips. She tilted her head slightly, as if studying me for the first time."Completed?" she repeated mockingl
