There were three types of people Emily feared most, something like her instinct told her to keep her distance from.
The people she knew. The people who forced friendship on her. And the people she didn't wish to know.
The reason she chose to be an introvert and docile was not to stand out much in the crowd. Her blooming years were ruined, but she had no regrets. She couldn't afford to get involved in unnecessary matters to survive when her parents wouldn't be around for her.
It did work out to her advantage, and Emily didn't have many enemies except for her grandfather, yet it was unexpected to get bothered this much by the kind of person she encountered today. She thought she wouldn't have to deal with the person in the third category she was terrified of coming across, but weirdly, she felt it would be easy to peel him layer by layer to get through his mind.
Plus, that man felt weirdly familiar. Emily didn't want to see him again, but why was her intuition telling her that when she knew she couldn't ignore him for now, she should get to know him more and get ready to get him hard before he got her trapped in his web?
But why on earth do I have to go that far?
Emily winced, grabbing her head. Her headache was getting stronger the more she tried to find the reason behind her mind telling her to be on guard from now on and fight back like crazy, just like she did three years ago in Brazil.
"Could it be that my grandfather was again coming after me?"
Emily muttered, leaning on her seat in her study. Her voice sounded a bit shaky, and then she heard Helenite.
"He has dealt an overwhelming loss against you. Twice, at that."
Emily sighed audibly. "Didn't I tell you to keep your mouth shut and reflect on your action, Ms. Kryeziu?"
"You- "
"Send that damn letter first and cut off your connection with your good-for-nothing group. This kind of networking won't help you to survive and put your family in dangerous situations repeatedly." Opening her eyes, Emily coldly glared at Helen. "You should know better than to keep these people around who would most likely desert you like they did today. Besides, you will be a lawyer. Through me, you have experienced many things over the years. Did you not get a brief grasp of the situation at the police station today?
"I...see." Helenite, who looked angry with Emily a moment ago, now had that dejected expression again. "I should have known that nothing would change even with your lawyer helping my teacher demote those corrupt officers at that time..."
This girl wanted revenge. Emily knew the situation wouldn't change much, yet years ago, she let Helenite do whatever she wished to do after making it clear to them that she didn't want to go after either of those people who took Cheryl away from her.
Yes, her grandfather failed in his desperate attempts to corner her and take her home, but again, Emily prioritized her and her people's survival the most. She certainly wouldn't gain anything from it as she knew where she was standing now.
Emily had many people to protect her sister, but what if they were attacked and lost their lives in this process? And that was why she was interfering in her friend's life choices. Emily was indebted to Helenite and her family, who stayed up countless nights on empty stomachs and fought for her to bring Cheryl back home while Emily was moving back and forth from Brazil to LA, where she almost died. It was a traumatizing and terrifying experience for her, but she felt lucky that her deceased stepmother was an assassin.
Shaking her head, Emily pushed away those thoughts that wouldn't be any help now.
"If you are done with sending your resignation letter, come and tell me everything you have yet to tell me about the club's incident."
Helenite's expression turned sour, but Emily ignored that. Cheryl was sleeping alone in her bedroom. Emily quickly wanted to wrap things for today before the little girl woke up and started Cherry Bomb Special Adventure in their kitchen.
Besides, Emily promised Helen's mother to convince her daughter to stop working as an intern in her current law firm. She'd keep her word no matter what, even if that meant threatening her friend that she wouldn't let her meet her sister again. Helen was fast enough to take the hint that Emily wasn't bluffing when she said that, which reminded her how Emily cut off everyone from her life.
"I didn't do anything last night in the club- ahem...um, sorry." Helenite coughed and avoided Emily's burning gaze at her, which was scary. "I mean, I did, but I also didn't. If you look at the bright side, you will say that I am innocent. Honestly, man, I wasn't supposed to be there. After hearing that you lost your job, I went after Adam to talk. You work to your bones for years. Girl, how could I not go and look for him? And there, I ran into some of those punks I was sent to gather evidence to take them down. I would have ignored them as I wanted to talk with your boss first, but they crossed the line when they started talking...things about you, ahem..."
"You sound like a street ruffian!" Helenite flinched but didn't talk back then. "You are lucky you came out unscathed, Helenite! Do you think any nightclub is safe after midnight? And you dare to look sad to leave that team of yours who was supposed to be there to watch over you when you are on field duty! What would Cheryl learn from any one of us after this? Gosh! This is too much!"
"They were there..."
Helen's quiet mumble angered Emily even more.
"And run away after the police raid with the charge of drugs and illegal weapons!" Emily felt awful to see how her friend was trembling, but that didn't keep her from throwing words_punches at Helen's face. "Did you hear yourself how pathetic you sound, Helen? I told you people in power see you guys as nothing but lambs to slaughter anytime. Do you think it would have been possible even for your cousin to clear those charges with his family backing? His family reputation would have hit rock bottom, and they would have lost influence in the market! And you, my friend, have no support. Your parents are teachers. Your best friend has no power despite being a heiress. Who will be at a loss if you involve yourself in unnecessary matters like last night's incident?"
No wonder that man demanded eight million from her! His intention was clear to Emily now, and he hoped that Emily would shoulder responsibility with him. Getting Helenite involved in this wouldn't do either one of us any good anyway.
That man just wanted to play safe, and that was all. Emily would try to be nice to him for his consideration for this time.
And as for Helenite, she kept her eyes glued on the floor and didn't say anything. "It's alright now. I made mistakes, too, and learned my lesson from that. So, I suggest you do the same." Emily still looked mad but said calmly, "For you, it is hard to ignore those who badmouth me behind my back. I am grateful to have at least one person to care about my feelings, but can I ever forgive myself if anything ever happens to you for me? Do you not see how afraid that little girl looked seeing you in jail today?"
Silence filled Emily's study. None of the girls said anything for a while.
Emily, who had been silently taking notes on her laptop about that incident, switched off the machine after some time and left her seat before making her way to her friend, who looked like she had finally come to her senses, which was a good sign itself.
Lifting her hand, Emily patted Helen's shoulder twice. "Now, get up, will you? You have to return to your hostel tomorrow."
Helen raised her head and looked ready to cry, "Do I have to?"
"Yes." Emily looked at her sternly. "For the time being. We talked about it. This is something your lawyer has also agreed with."
When it came to family, Emily acted very strict. It was hilarious how Helenite's parents doted on her and trusted her more than their daughter. At least, unlike others, they were aware of her situation and had helped Emily, caring less about their safety.
Her guilt would eat her up for not clearing their misconception about a man like her former boss. Emily didn't mean to deceive them, but what could she possibly do other than keep them in the dark now? She was helpless.

The next afternoon. . .
"Mr. Fernandez, you have a guest waiting in the lobby. Would you like to see her now?"
"We aren't done here."
The intercom went off with a swift swap of Bash's finger before even his assistant had finished talking.
"So, where were we?"
Bash flickered his one perfectly shaped eyebrow, tapping his finger on his desk, which showed his impatience.
His gaze fixed on one of the two men, seated on the other side of his desk, particularly.
Adam.
Emily's former superior and Sebastian's detective friend undercover.
The other guy in the room stood by the window, but Sebastian could tell his bodyguard was listening to them silently.
Adam had platinum blonde hair, the same as Bash, but not natural. His striking grey eyes looked sharper and merciless and gave away his personality by just the depth and darkness of his orbs that no one had ever seen in him. "I've reported to you everything."
"About the accident..." Bash's voice sounded blunter than a knife. With his meaningful gaze fixed on him, he pointed out, " -about the two months' leave she had taken three years ago, you have mentioned. Did you feel anything strange about her at that time?"
"I can't tell if it was an accident as the report says something else. It can be fake. Indeed, she was there for over a week, and that's it. It was strange how everything was erased from those records like she never existed. However, she returned when her leave was over, and since then, I couldn't help but cover up for her so that the media and none of her students or guardians posted her picture anywhere." Then Adam shrugged. "You see that for a rising star like her, it is troublesome to have people tailing her and bothering her family. She was efficient and hardworking enough to make me keep my word until now. I find nothing strange in it, Bash."
"...Anything from her side."
For Adam, trying his best not to side with Emily seemed unsettling for Bash.
"You mean her family? Recently, they have run into some crisis in their business, which indicates they won't stop their advances this time. Don't you think it is about time for them to pull all the strings to corner Emily now that they know about her weakness?"
Familiar anger surged in his heart, recalling the event that had almost ruined his life years ago.
That night, Sebastian was very nervous about the event the next day.
Who would have thought choosing an engagement ring of his woman's liking could be that hard? Later, he attended a party on a cruise to celebrate the success of the ongoing movie in theaters, and there, his drink was spiked, and he ended up in a luxurious suite.
And there, he saw her...Emily.
Bash wasn't sure about the last one because of the lack of evidence he had in his hand.
But the first one...the memory of that nasty night, and then her face and warmness, had all given birth to wrath and disdain in his chest that Sebastian had never felt for anyone before.
He had been looking for that face and sent his people to hunt her down, but he always failed.
She was not a passenger or had her name registered in that guest's book on that luxurious ship. Who would have thought their path would cross again that morning in his bar? And now, she had the nerve to look at her with no recognition in her eyes!
"What are you planning to do with her?"
"Once it gets confirmed it was her that night." Bash said venomously, "I'll do something that no one could ever expect from me,"
Since the day she came into his life, everything had changed in Sebastian's life for the worse.
Sebastian didn't want to remember those events, but now, Emily had made it difficult to bear the consequences alone.
That woman needed to shoulder the responsibility with him now. He would make sure to have her pay back the amount he lost because of her friend's surprise attack on his club, and his influence significantly decreased in his largest branch in Seattle.
He sneered mentally and answered this time with the intercom vibrating on his desk continuously. "Yes, send her in."
"Well, we should take our leave now, don't you think, Julian?"
Adam was about to leave his seat while asking the bodyguard, who was looking out of the window, but he stopped after hearing Sebastian's stern response. "I would like to talk with her alone. Any kind of interference would be intolerable."
Before returning to his post quietly, Adam froze, listening to Julian, "May I know why you asked me to bring this marriage contract file today, sir?"
He won't take no for an answer. I found it rather funny, recalling how Bash's bodyguard stalked off after handing me that well-laminated card. That comment sounded like his boss owned the entire Sao Paulo, and every citizen here followed his puppy_love rules. Then where did that make my grandfather, the great Emmanuel Iglesias, stand right now? Under a hybrid actor's thumb? Alpha Grandpa would rather die than wait for that day to come into his life. Someone who loved power would never want to sign any contract with a young and inexperienced entrepreneur unless that man had a strong backup whom grandpa could use in his favor. It might sound like I was looking down on that star, but it wasn't the case. I was in dad's office most of the time for mom, so I was aware of things. Bash would have had a chance if it was my dad in the position, but now, he would get played by grandpa, and, in the end, it would only be him to blame for wasting his time here in this city---oh, sorry, I mean i
"You shouldn't have dragged her family into this. We don't know the person you are helping." Bash's assistant/bodyguard said the first thing as soon as his boss came out of the bathroom after freshening up. The traveling and the temperature of Sao Paulo had taken a toll on Bash. He would rather avoid those southeastern countries where he felt stuffed and suffocated, but his vision led him to where he never wanted to be in the first place. His fair skin was turning red, and he got rashes too, which had him in the worst mood because even the water there didn't suit him. And then, his man brought up a matter he hated to think of for so many reasons that he stopped counting, knowing that would take him nowhere. He hoped to sign the contract with Mr. Iglesias fast, and then only he could return to NYC for his movie promotion, away from that humid city. Wiping his face, Bash tossed the towel on the dressing table in the room where Emily's grandfather's butler brought them to freshen up as
And that was it. Bash left his seat so abruptly that his chair nearly dropped on the ground, and the cutlery and spoons scattered all over the table. He could barely control his anger, and when he found Emmanuel looking at him strangely, Bash gave him a tight-lipped smile, saying, "Sorry, My girlfriend has a conference tomorrow. I have to drop her at the airport right now." "Oh, that won't be a problem." Emmanuel smiled softly at Bash, holding mischief in his eyes that Bash missed seeing. "Bring your dad and brother to Brazil next time. I want to apologize to Andrew for that blunt rejection from Milena. Eriberto spoilt her, you see. I need to make sure your family isn't holding any grudges against me when we have to work together for the time being." The only thing that man cared about was Bash's family, who Bash had as a backup that he would never use, even if his company went bankrupt. Emmanuel wouldn't care if Bash failed to bring him the money he demanded at the end of the year,
Emily flinched the tone Bash used on her. His eyes held accusation and caution for her. She knew she shouldn't feel guilty, but her cheeks still heated up in embarrassment and terror, and then her eyes enlarged as she realized how effortlessly the man caught her when she was still in disguise, or that was what she thought until her feet touched her false hair. She was supposed to put that on after getting in the car, but her nervousness and worry made her completely forget about checking on her appearance. "Water." Suppressing her fear, Emily again held her water for him, "You need this more than my name." Whatever the officers said about Sebastian, she remembered them still. That transaction from his account would separate her from her sister for life, but she knew he was a businessman, and whatever he did to get that deal from her grandpa. Bash wasn't the first person who tried to destroy her, and he certainly wouldn't be the last person her grandfather lured to bring her to her kn
Emily didn't look back like the other day. Bash expected she would and kept his eyes glued to the bus until he lost sight of the bus. What did she think of herself? That he couldn't make it wherever he wished to without her help? Who asked for her in the first place, anyway? It wouldn't have happened to him if she hadn't chased after him with her heavy steps in the dark until she was out of breath and failed to catch him. Bash snorted coldly at her in his mind and turned his gaze from the road to the taxi to his side. Bash wondered why that man didn't throw those useless cards away or call her back to take them back. But the glow in his eyes was undeniable. Spiked up the curiosity in Bash's mind, and he wished to know what kind of treasure the driver had got in his hand, which had him choose them over the piles of cash in his way for his bravery. Either way, Bash would give him what he deserved, even when the driver pissed him off with his denial to give him a lift to the airport to s
Emily groaned in annoyance at the constant beeping sound of her phone in her hand. It was getting on her nerves. She didn't get a blink of sleep for the whole day when she didn't have to do anything with the packing, unlike the other time she had to hurry up to catch her flight to Brazil before her grandfather forged every piece of evidence and proof she needed to throw a case against the child protection services who denied her every claim to meet her sister after they took them from her home. The authorities were found guilty, and now her team is looking for the person who complained about Emily about their services, but still, the judge opposed giving her guardianship. But still, Emily was going to get that, and her grandpa had to hide on his estate fearing for his. . .life. Even that little partner he lured to destroy her could only count his days in his hospital bed and curse the day he thought about signing a deal with him. Could it be him disturbing her with his calls to her nu
Emily regretted she couldn't refute that day to Bash for insulting her so openly that night in the car, so she imagined it was Bash standing before her again, and she just lashed out without holding back her anger. She didn't sense anything wrong or how the air around her thickened slowly, and Beckett looked angry with a hint of mischief in his eyes. "Being a person of the 21st century, it sounds awful in a thousand ways when you look down on a woman or man just because they were somehow weaker or were no match to stand at your level. What do you expect us to do for you, huh? Lick the damn ground you walk on like you are some god, and we will be your followers! This is not a Barbie World, and no girl chooses Ken over...well, Elias!" Emily knew she sounded like a complete narcissist, but she didn't know who to compare with Ken. Besides, the female co-workers liked Elias for his nature, which made her feel less guilty. Glaring at this bratty rival, she raised her voice for one last tim
"Mom? You here?" Bash scowled, not expecting to see his mother in the club owner's cabin. "I heard everything you did." His mother's eyes weren't on him, but her tone made him glare at Julian, whose eyes were anywhere but him. "Do you have anything to say in your defense?" Bash swallowed hard, yet he pretended he didn't know what she was saying. "I didn't hide anything from you. You were aware of everything, especially my dreams for my business. That's something I promised my uncle," His throat felt constricted with emotions. "He was my brother. Of course, I know." She said in reminiscence, but she brushed it off with a cold snort. Bash clenched his hands when her darker shade of green locked with his light emerald; he got the warning there even before she put that in words. "Before I take any legal action against Mr. Iglesias and why you helped him, being well aware of his intentions with the forsaken heiress who had been fighting for a child's custody, I want to know why your gi
Emily lay on her face, taking the whole bed for herself. Even her jaw was killing her to support her face on the pillow for the cut on her forehead. Even a fool knows what is good for him, but Emily. . .she was beyond that. Who rides a bike at that speed after falling from it? Those four paint buckets had weight, but still, she carried them on her back. Could she go to work on Wednesday even? Birds were chirping outside like usual for biscuits. She could hear that, even though the windows were closed and the doors too, she could still smell the burnt bacon, toast, and beans in her kitchen. "Lord, Helen! The pancake batter was in the freezer!" "It's done!" Helen's scream sounded from the other side. "Hold your horses." "Yes! It's done." Her sister hollered. "Don't mind the smell. It's a glitch!" "You heard her." Helen gushed, which made Emily shake her head, snorting. It would be a hell of a job to fix her kitchen, but she could do nothing but accept this silently. At least the gi
"Adam?" Bash received a call from his friend/business partner, who had been handling the part of the swimming in his club. "Can you tell me if all your associates will be available now? I can wait till their shift is over, but I want them in my office before seven." Standing at the side of the road, Bash talked on his phone and gestured to Julian about how it went at the drugstore, at which Julian shrugged only. Shaking his head, he leaned on the pillar at his side and faced the street where the heiress had fled with her bike. "You are in the city, Sebastian?" Adam sounded surprised. "Julian and I talked last morning, but he didn't tell me about your arrival. Anyway, I can send the six instructors on their shifts now. The session will end in a while, so. . . are you on your way here?" "I arrived last evening." Bash said, "Send your instructors into my office at the end of their shifts. I have some paperwork to finish and checked on the manager and servers about the complaints I am g
Bash couldn't just believe his eyes. His mouth fell open, and he blinked twice, wanting to confirm if it was. . .her. The girl he had forever seen in a hoodie or man's clothes was now standing in her knee-length brown dress with an overcoat. Her hair, which Bash thought was short, he could tell if she untied her messy bun, it would reach to her waist. She looked a few inches shorter, which was obvious, as she was serving as a male bartender in Sao Paulo, faking it all, but she looked. . .fuller. With her vegetable bag in his hand, Bash took a few steps toward her while thinking about how that teen girl looked more like a woman now with her noticeable changes. It would be wrong to call her a teen girl back when they met. She looked somewhere between a tomboy and a schoolboy then. His eyes accessed her from head to toe, and when he again looked at her face, he found a cut on her forehead and red liquid trickling down from the left side of her face, but she looked oblivious to that! U
Bash sat in his car, staring out the window at an exclusive clubhouse where he could see people queuing in front of that evening. He has owned this place since he moved to this city and brought his business here three years ago, but the headquarters was still in Texas, close to his aunt's home, who goes for his factory visit to check on the workers. Something someone close to his heart used to do for him when he was away on business trips or for his shoots, but now, it was only him and his emptiness. Emptiness? Bash snorted coldly in his mind. He didn't have time for that anymore. He worked like a freak. Even the records he made in his acting career now no one could break them, and his business. . .he would soon buy the entire swimming board in the US. "Where are you heading?" Turning his gaze from his club, Bash asked when Julian returned after answering his call. "Just have some private matter to deal with nearby," Julian said coolly. "Do you want something me to bring for you, s
(Present) "I love you." Emily whimpered, holding the hands of her best friend Helenite, who had an oversized coat on with a cap on her head. Helenite gritted out in a manly tone and shrugged Emily's hand away from her shoulder. "You don't say that." "Please, don't turn your back on me." Emily bit her inner cheeks while sobbing, but she flinched when suddenly her friend turned toward her. "Then what do you want me to do, Rose?" Holding Emily's shoulders, Helen jerked her with a force that poor Emily saw stars in her vision and tried not to bring that look of horror into her eyes, "Tell me. What should I do to make this pain go away from my heart?" In the backyard of Emily's house on a winter's eve in Seattle, the duo arranged a badminton night to surprise their little sister, but it all went wrong, much to their dismay. From the corner of her eyes, Emily glanced at Cheryl sitting on a chair with popcorn in her lap and instantly looked away, noticing how her sister narrowed her ga
Meanwhile, Bash's mood worsened by the kind of way she apologized to Catherina. He was about to go after her, but his aunt stopped him. "Please, son, let her be." Catherine intervened. The young couple was close to her heart. "She didn't mean to be rude. You know how things are getting there in her home." "That still doesn't explain the way she talked to you." Bash exhaled harshly, looking into the hallway where his girlfriend had disappeared. Catherine held Bash's arm and made him face her. "You have to understand her side that it isn't easy for her either. She lost but didn't want the same to happen to you in your business and acting career. When you had to stay in Sao Paulo, she went places where you couldn't go to your factories, fundraising events, family gatherings, dealing with your clients, and everything. Please, don't judge her about how she talked to me just now. You should be ashamed of keeping her waiting so long to make her your girlfriend. You met her at sixteen, bu
"Did your dad call?" Bash heard his aunt Catherina when he stepped into the backyard garden where all her colony's children played like they usually do after school. The mansion garden had become more like a playground where their parents also came for strolling to keep their eyes on their children. Nobody is allowed to step inside the mansion unless they are family members. "No, but he will be okay." Madeline said, and Bash halted on his steps and hid behind the pillar. But Catherina's gaze didn't waver from a particular boy who couldn't be nine now sitting on a swing away from the rest and ignoring the girls who wanted to sit on his swing like usual. As if he owned that. The kind of cousin Bash got, whom his aunt adopted, reminded Bash so much of him when he was that boy's age. And the kid didn't like his would-be sister-in-law at all. "He better be," Catherina said. "Sebastian has got to clear his name himself. Those pictures were fake that he showed to your family. His direct
It was a hectic week for Bash. He didn't get much rest before meeting the cast of his films for the promotion now in Dallas. So many reporters and their questions couldn't be avoided either, the same way he tried not to be rude to answer the hosts when they brought up the stuff from his personal life that had nothing to do with his profession. The cast members were thrown in a tight spot and tormented, but they managed it like Bash did, changing the matter. "They won't let us catch a break, will they, guys?" Bash questioned absentmindedly, "Is it your fiance again absentmindedly?" "Hell, no." She laughed. "He's okay with it, despite him being a teacher. All problems come from my side. They keep the same thoughts about me as they had when I was in school. People change with time, but dad won't believe that until I get hitched." The girl at her side interjected. "Then do that. What are you waiting for, Amelia?" Amelia scoffed at her co-star, Crystal. "If he tells me, I will fly to Sy
"You are taking Julian, and this is the end of the discussion." Bash looked sternly at his mother, who was adamant about going alone to the Iglesias manor where his father and older brother would be. They had just arrived and directly drove to Emmanuel's place, and Bash didn't know why. He wasn't that interested or had the time to spare when his flight was in an hour. "We have talked about it, Sebastian. After what happened here with you, I am not leaving you with- " "You know very well this isn't the first time I have been attacked like that." He said calmly. "It was nothing new, and it happened to all of us and even to you. Don't forget why you divorced my dad. You thought it would work, but it didn't. You have enemies, and I am making mine too. You are aware of how things work in a highly profitable business. You know the risk, but you are still doing this. Please leave it here, mom. I insist. The only thing I want to do is break off the deal. But if you can't, then I will have
