Emma's POV
“Mom! Eva? What are you doing here?” I asked, my voice filled with surprise as I spotted them at my office door. Eva rushed forward, arms outstretched, enveloping me in a tight embrace. “Isn’t it obvious? We missed you, darling.” I hugged her back, feeling a mix of joy and unease. “I missed you too. But why the sudden visit?” “To remind you that you’ve been working too hard and it’s time to settle down,” Mom chimed in, her tone both affectionate and insistent. “Mom, please, not this again.” I rolled my eyes, but I knew from experience that she wouldn’t drop the subject so easily. “You may not like this discussion, but that doesn’t mean we can avoid it forever.” “Mom, can I tell her my news?” Eva interjected, clearly irritated by the direction the conversation was heading. “What news?” I asked, turning to my sister. She grinned and held out her left hand, showing off a dazzling diamond ring. “I’m engaged!” Eva exclaimed, her excitement palpable. For a moment, I stood there, stunned. “Engaged? To whom?” I finally asked, my mind racing. She glanced at Mom, then back at me, hesitating. “To Daniel.” Daniel? The name echoed in my mind like a bad memory. The same Daniel who had once been my fiancé, chosen by my father because he was, in Dad’s words, “the perfect match.” But I hadn’t agreed. I had called off the wedding and left, much to my father’s fury. The man I dreaded a lot, even more than my own dad. He was just like my dad in every manner. I shivered thinking of Eva's life after getting married to him. “Daniel? Are you sure? Is Dad forcing you into this?” I asked, my voice rising with concern. Eva shook her head. “No, nothing like that. After you called off the wedding, he was upset, but he moved on. We reconnected on a trip to Europe. We spent a lot of time together, became friends, and then he proposed to me in Paris.” “And are you happy?” I asked, needing to be certain she wasn’t making the same mistake I almost did. “Very happy,” Eva assured me. “I hope you’re not upset that I’m marrying him,” she asked me. I shook my head. “No, Eva, I’m not upset. I’m happy for you, truly. I never had any feelings for him, and that’s why I left. I’m just glad you’re sure about this. You are sure of this, right?” I asked again as I could not understand how she could fall in love with a man like him? “Thank you, Emma, let me assure you, I am absolutely sure of my feelings for him. He is a bit of a non-romantic person, but I am over-romantic, so maybe we would get balanced. I just wanted to be certain you were okay with it.” she said with a smile. “Of course I am,” I said, smiling warmly at her. “You deserve to be happy.” Mom, who had been silent for a while, took the opportunity to jump back in. “And when will we have the chance to celebrate your engagement, Emma? We’ve waited long enough.” “Mom,” I groaned, exasperated. “Can’t we just have a normal conversation without bringing up marriage?” “Your father is worried about you. We all are,” she said, ignoring my plea. “He’s always worried about something I’m not doing right,” I replied, forcing a smile. “We only want the best for you, Emma. But you keep pushing us away,” Mom said, her voice tinged with hurt. “After all this time, can’t we just enjoy each other’s company without turning it into a melodrama?” I was losing patience. “The issue is that you’re not doing what’s expected,” she retorted, clearly upset. Eva, who had been watching this exchange with increasing discomfort, finally spoke up. “Mom, please don’t spoil the day.” But Mom wasn’t done. “Your sister is younger than you, and she’s already in a serious relationship. What’s the problem, Emma?” I rolled my eyes. “I’m not Eva. Why can’t you understand that?” “Because you’re twenty-five, almost twenty-six, Emma. Your friends are settling down, and you’re still single. What are you waiting for?” I shook my head in disbelief. “Please, Mom, not this again. Can we drop it, just for today?” Eva, clearly feeling emboldened by Mom’s persistence, chimed in, “Mom’s right, Emma. You should think about settling down.” I turned to her, incredulous. “You too, Eva? I’m so tired of this conversation. Let’s talk about something else—like your wedding plans.” Eva hesitated, then sighed. “Alright. But there’s something I want to ask you.” “Anything,” I said, was relieved to change the subject. “I want you to be engaged before my wedding,” she said, her voice soft but firm. I stared at her, shocked. “That’s not fair, Eva. This isn’t a game.” “I know it’s not fair, but it’s what I want,” she said, her eyes pleading. Was she scared that Daniel and I might get on where we left off? She was insecure?? No! Maybe! I looked at her, then at Mom, who was beaming with hope. They were ganging up on me, and I knew it. “Fine,” I said, giving in, “but I don’t even have a boyfriend.” “That’s okay,” Eva replied with a mischievous grin. “We’ve got time to find someone.” Mom clapped her hands, clearly thrilled. “We’ll help you find the perfect man, Emma.” I sighed, knowing this wasn’t going to end anytime soon. “I’ll do my best. But right now, can we please eat? I’m starving.” Mom smiled and nodded. “Of course, darling. Let’s eat.” As we sat down to have lunch, I couldn’t help but feel the weight of their expectations pressing down on me. But I also knew one thing for sure—I wasn’t going to let anyone, not even my own family, dictate my future. The rest of the evening passed in a blur of wedding talk and laughter, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that my life was about to become a lot more complicated. As much as I loved my family, I had no intention of following the path they so desperately wanted for me.Day of the exhibition.Emma's POV Everything was proceeding smoothly until I caught sight of Mum heading towards me, her eyes brimming with pride. My heart dropped like a stone. Not now… please, not now."Emma, darling, we're so proud of you!" Mum exclaimed, pulling me into one of her warm, enveloping hugs."Thanks, Mum," I managed to reply, forcing a smile to mask the uneasiness bubbling inside me."But I haven’t come alone," she added, her voice tinged with that familiar excitement that always spelled trouble. "My friend and her son are here."Just like that, my smile vanished."Mum, not again!" I groaned inwardly. "Especially not here, with all these people around. Why on earth did you bring them?""They were already planning to attend, darling. You can’t avoid them now. Come, meet Mrs. Moore and her very handsome son, Mike," she insisted, as though this were the most natural thing in the world.I drew in a deep breath, plastering on a polite smile that I hoped didn’t look too for
Emma's POV "What? Who is he? Tell me, and I’ll speak to him and his family," Mum demanded, her eyes narrowing suspiciously."No, Mum, it’s not like that. I need more time," I pleaded, trying to keep my story straight."Why? If you like him, just tell him and get married. What are you waiting for? Are you waiting for him to propose?" she pressed."Mum, I can’t rush into marriage like this. Please, give me some time. It’s… complicated," I explained, though I knew how weak it sounded."But you’re nearly twenty-six," she pointed out, as though that were an insurmountable obstacle."Exactly—twenty-six, not forty-six. I want at least two more years, and I need you to stop pressuring me until then," I said, trying to keep my tone calm and reasonable."Are you out of your mind? You’ll be twenty-eight by then!" she exclaimed as if that were the worst possible fate."So what, Mum?" I shot back, my patience wearing thin."I don’t want to wait that long," she insisted, her stubbornness matching
Emma's POVIt had been nearly two months since my mother imposed that dreadful deadline, and with Eva's engagement just around the corner, I knew it was high time to introduce my so-called boyfriend to the family. But where on earth was I going to find one?"What's with the furrowed brow?" George, my best friend and business partner, asked as he noticed my evident distress. George was the only man I felt truly comfortable around."I have to attend Eva's engagement this week and then her wedding next month," I replied with a sigh."And that’s troubling you because...?" he inquired, eyes narrowing in curiosity."Because I need a boyfriend," I confessed, barely meeting his gaze."A boyfriend?!" George's exclamation was laced with disbelief."Yes, a boyfriend to introduce to my family. If I don’t, they’ll start arranging my marriage with the first eligible man they can find," I explained, frustration evident in my voice."Aww, poor you," George teased, though there was genuine sympathy in
Emma's POV "So she should serve you hot meals and be ready to please you in bed, like a slave?" I challenged, my patience wearing thin."A slave? No, of course not. But as a willing partner, to share in life’s pleasures," Peter clarified as if that made it any better."This is pointless. We’re not on the same page. Our views on marriage are completely different," I declared, deciding there and then to end the conversation."I didn’t say anything out of the ordinary. This is what every man expects from his wife," Peter defended, clearly taken aback."Well, then I have a problem with all such men. Women are not objects to be used for a man's convenience. We have our own identities and our dreams. Marriage should be a partnership, not a master-servant relationship. I’m sorry, Peter, but I’m not interested in your kind of marriage. Goodbye," I stated firmly, standing up to leave before he could say another word.Still fuming, I returned to the office, only to walk straight into what felt
Emma's POV George sighed in relief, "What a relief. Now both of you, follow me."We followed George to my office. Once inside, I demanded, "Now, explain why you dragged him here."Ryan, equally curious, added, "Yes, I’m eager to hear this as well."George began, "Emma, you mentioned needing a boyfriend to placate your family, so I thought—"Ryan cut him off, looking far too pleased with himself. "Boyfriend? I’m all in!"I shot back, "Well, I’m not. I don’t need him or anyone to pretend to be my boyfriend."Ryan, intrigued, asked, "Pretend?"George explained, "Emma’s family is pressuring her to settle down. Her younger sister is about to get married, and her mother has given her a deadline to show up with a boyfriend or fiancé—or else they'll choose one for her."Ryan leaned back, clearly enjoying the unfolding drama. "So, you want me to play the role of her boyfriend or fiancé?"George nodded. "If you're willing..."I interrupted, feeling cornered. "I’m not sure about this... It does
Emma's POV " The man you went to meet today, came back after meeting you and said that he was sure that you were... not into men. " Eva said. " WHAT??? " I was shocked to hear that. Oh no!! Shit!!! I could not even breathe... Eva didn't say anything and just continued to look at me. " WHAT? What are you saying? Why didn't you tell me? " I was shocked, and just then, Daniel came in. He looked at me with a weird expression. Then he placed his arm around Eva's waist as if he wanted to prove something to me. " I have been trying to contact you since then. Where the hell were you?? And when you picked up the call you yelled at me instead of listening to me. " Eva asked " I was busy, and later I left my phone in the car. " I lied. " Is it true? " She asked me." What? I really forgot the phone in the car. Have you never forgotten your phone in the car? I was very tired, so it escaped my mind but as..." I was explaining. " I am not asking that, because I am sure you are lyin
Emma's POV "Are you out of your mind? Eva, please make him understand, or tell him to leave. I was uncomfortable because I didn't even like him, and on top of that, he was telling me to be ready to try new things in bed and leave my work as he earns very well. I don't like such men. Why did mom want such a man to be her son-in-law ??" I retorted. " Are you sure?? " Eva asked." Of course I am... Why are you even asking?? He was fake." I replied. " Do you know grandma was so shocked? She instantly had the stroke. Mom also got unconscious. " Eva said" I think she is lying, Eva. " He said. " That is the exact reason why I refused to marry you. You think exactly like dad who thinks that... Let it be... I don't want that stupid discussion. I am not interested in those men who just want a beautiful wife as they want a beautiful body in their bed. It's high time that men should start treating their women as equals. Women are more than just a beautiful, warm, soft, and cuddly body in
Emma's POV Feeling trapped and frustrated, I came out of the room and came to stand by a big window in the corridor. What shall I do now? Shall I tell everyone the reason why I dared not to marry him?? No, Eva would be hurt, she would not listen to me. What if she really loved him? What if she thinks that I was jealous as they were together now? She looked insecure earlier. But I must tell her why I left him.Yes!! I must. Then it would be up to her if she believes me or not. Well, I wasn’t interested in being another man’s accessory. I was determined to build a career for myself, to stand on my own two feet without depending on my father, my husband, or anyone else.If I were ever to marry, it would be for love, not convenience. I wanted a life partner, not a ringmaster, cracking the whip while I dutifully followed his commands. A life partner, in my mind, meant someone who would share the journey with me, where we’d have equal say and equal rights in our shared life. I wasn’t
