Liam’s POV

“Good evening. Thank you for coming,” I smiled and greeted what must have been the one-hundredth guest of the night.

The crazy thing was, I didn’t even know half of the people I had already greeted.

“When do we get to stop this?” I bent down to Emma’s ear and whispered the question into her ear. “My legs are killing me. I need to sit down”.

“Can you please stop whining?” she said, sharply, then greeted and fake smiled at the next guest that walked in next. “Shouldn’t you be used to these things by now? I’m the one who hasn’t hosted a single one of these in her life, yet I’m handling it better than you. Aside from that, I’m the one who’s been standing in heels for the last hour, so what exactly are you complaining about?”

“Sorry,” I grumbled in response. “You know, for someone who hasn’t known my mother for a long time, you sure do act like her”.

“Don’t test my patience, Liam,” she growled in response.

I let out a little laugh but stopped when she gave me a look that ga

She just stood and watched me as I puffed out my smoke, then looked at Ryan who quickly hid his cigarette behind him.“You smoke?” she asked, dragging out her question slowly.Clearly, she was not impressed.“Yes,” I said, tilting my head to the side trying to understand why she was asking me such an obvious question, then it clicked.I hadn’t smoked around her before.“Is this a new habit of yours or is it something you’ve always done?” she asked, looking at me skeptically.“I’ve been smoking since I was in high school, but it’s not like an addiction or anything. I only do it when I’m stressed or when I’m bored”.“Okay, so are you trying to tell me that all the while we’ve been together, you’ve not been tired or bored?” she folders her arms across her chest, maintaining a strict-looking composure.“That’s not what I’m sa

Emma’s POV“My God, I’m so exhausted,” I cried out as I threw myself onto the couch. “You can’t be as exhausted as I am,” Liam responded, plopping down on the couch opposite me. “You’re kidding, right?” I scoffed, propping up my body with my shoulders, so I could have a good look at him. “I mean, I did greet a lot of people,” he shrugged his shoulders and then burst out laughing. “Don’t mind me, I’m just kidding”. “You think you’re such a comedian sometimes, don’t you?” I shook my head, then rested my head again. “I try,” he laughed. “On a serious note though, thank you for tonight. For all the effort you put towards making sure everything went according to plan. I really appreciate it for real. I mean you were on your feet for most of the being and you didn’t complain once, just went along with everything. You truly are an amazing person, Emma, and I appreciate you,” he said. His tone seemed so soft and genuine, like he was in actual awe of me. It made me melt. “Thank you,”

Emma’s POV“Are you aware that Liam’s birthday is in a week?” Samatha asked, looking up from what she was cooking. “Huh?” I couldn’t hear her over the sound of the blender crushing the ice I had just put in it. Sammy and I were currently at her place having a girls’ night in. She was cooking stir-fried spaghetti while I was making some mojitos to go with. She nudged her head toward the blender, signaling for me to turn it off, so I could hear her clearly, so I did. “What did you say?” I asked. “I said, are you aware that Liam’s birthday is in a week?” she repeated. “What? How the hell do you know that, and I don’t?” I asked, perplexed. “Ryan told me,” she shrugged her shoulders casually and continued stirring the food in the pan. “How are you being so casual about this?” I asked, pouring out the ice into the glass cups. “How do you expect me to say it, Emma?” she laughed. “He’s not my man, so I’m not bothered by anything, and he’s not exactly yours either, so don’t let it b

Emma’s POV“Hey,” I greeted Liam as I walked into the apartment. He was seated on the couch with his laptop on his lap, so I assumed he was working. He didn’t answer me but put up a finger to stop me from saying anything further. “Thank you so much, sir. I’ll revert to you on that to let you know what my people have to say on the matter. Thank you so much for your time, goodbye,” he smiled as he spoke to whoever he was on a Zoom call with.“Sorry about that,” he apologized as he shut his laptop. “That meeting was literally going on forever”. “That’s fine. It’s just 2 o’clock though, so what time would that meeting have started?” I asked, putting my stuff down on the couch next to him. “Around 9:30 I think,” he responded. “A.m.?” I asked, surprised. “Yes, Emma. 9:30 a.m.,” he laughed. “Wow. That’s crazy. So are you heading to the office today?” “Nope,” he answered, leaning into the chair. “I’m taking a break today. I actually wasn’t even supposed to be on this call this morning

Emma’s POV“I’m so sorry, Liam. I didn’t mean to put you in this mood,” I apologized. He sniffled, then let go of my hands and turned off the stove.“It’s fine,” he wiped his face, dismissing the conversation. “Let’s move on from this,” he said with a forced smile on his lips.I definitely wasn’t going to let go of it, but I decided to drop the matter for now.“Of course,” I nodded, then collected the plate of food he had dished out for me. “I’m going to head upstairs with this, so I’ll be in my room if you need me,” I said, then took my phone and charger from the couch and headed upstairs. In about fifteen minutes, I was done eating, then decided to take a bath. I wasn’t up to ten minutes into my bath when I heard Liam shouting my name from outside my bedroom door.“What is it, Liam? I’m in the bathroom!” I yelled back in response.“Okay. When you’re done, I want us to talk about something. I’ll be downstairs waiting for you!”“Sure!” I responded. What now? That’s what I thought as

  • Her Unexpected Love Story    Chapter Sixty-Seven

Liam’s POVOver the next few days, Emma and I didn’t talk much. Not about my birthday or anything in general. I was honestly pissed off from the last conversation she and I had, so I didn’t have much to say to her. Plus, I’d spent the last two nights over at Anna’s place so I could get some space from the apartment and Emma. Now, unfortunately for me, the day I had been dreading all week had finally come. My birthday. The day I turn thirty-one. The day that marks two years since my grandfather and I celebrated my birthday together.Fuck. It’s crazy how it’s been two years now, and I can’t just seem to let go.In my defense, that man was more of a father to me than my own father ever was. He’s my mother’s father and, judging from the stories my mother and her siblings would tell me about their childhood, it was no wonder the man treated me the way he did. Can’t say the same for my father’s father though. That man was much more rigid than my father was and is. I barely spoke to him up

  • Her Unexpected Love Story    Chapter Sixty-Eight

Liam’s POVIt was currently 7:45 p.m., meaning that in a few short hours, I’d have successfully spent my birthday the way I wanted to, alone.Emma wasn’t home yet, but I wasn’t too bothered by that because she had called a couple of hours earlier to check in on me and let me know she’d be home later. It was honestly quite cute how worried she was about me. When she called, she kept asking if I needed anything or if I wanted her to come home early, and it made me realize how far she was willing to go for the people she cared about. It’s just so crazy considering I’ve been absolute shit to her.As I sat down in front of the television contemplating what to eat for dinner, I got a call from Ryan.“Hey, man. What’s up?” I asked him as soon as I put the phone to my ear.“Birthday boy. You home?” he asked.“Yeah, I am. Why?”He didn’t say anything in response and cut the call, just at the same time he heard a loud knock on the front door.Fucking hell. “Who is it?” I grumbled, standing up

Emma’s POV“I’m here, guys,” I said in a sing-song voice as I descended the last flight of stairs.“Finally,” Ryan said, rushing to bring the boxes of pizza into the living room. “I’m starving,” he complained, rubbing his stomach as he set down the packs on the center table.“When are you never hungry?” Liam asked him, rolling his eyes.“Shut up, dude,” Ryan snapped back at him.“Sorry, babe, but I’m actually with Liam on this one. We ate about an hour before heading over here. What’s going on with you?” Samantha chirped in.“I burn my food easily. You know this,” Ryan sulked.Throughout their back and forth, I just remained quiet and watched the three of them speak in fascination. They really are a weird bunch of people.“Did you touch the ice cream that was in the freezer?” I asked Liam as I walked over to the refrigerator.“There was ice cream in there and I didn’t know?” he looked offended.“I don’t understand. Did you buy any ice cream? Why the hell are you looking hurt?”“Oh. Th

Liam’s POVIt had been a week since Emma had made her choice to be with me and for this last week, I’ve probably been the happiest man on this earth. Now, our first anniversary was in three days, and I had no idea what to do. Before we got married, I remember while I was having one of the pre-wedding discussions with my mother, she said she would love for Emma and me to throw a party or a ball or something in that regard to commemorate the milestone, while also making sure we appear as a happily married couple in the public light. However, with how things are going in the family right now, with my dad’s sickness and the rift between Emma and my parents, that party that my mother would have wanted us to have just doesn’t seem probable. And to be honest, I haven’t even had a talk with Emma about this anniversary of ours, so God knows if she actually remembers that it’s even coming up or not. “Liam! Where are you!?” Ryan yelled, pulling me out of my thoughts as he stepped into the apa

I didn’t realize I had kept you standing there”. “It’s fine,” I dismissed it with a small smile. “I was lost in thought too, anyway”. “Right,” he replied, his lips drawn up into a tight smile. “Here,” he gestured to my bag that was still slung over my shoulder. “Let me get that for you”. “Oh. Thank you,” I said as I handed the bag to him. “No problem,” he replied, walking over to place the bag down on the couch while I took a seat on one of the stools surrounding the kitchen island. “So,” he started as he came back into the kitchen and took a seat on the opposite side of me. “How’d it go over there at Maywood?” he continued, his eyes focused on mine as he eagerly awaited what I had to s

  • Her Unexpected Love Story    Chapter One Hundred and Forty-Two

Emma’s POVIt was now Sunday, so it was time for me to head back home. As I packed up the last of my toiletries, my mind wandered back to the events of the past few days. The emotional rollercoaster I'd been on since my trip to the cabin with Liam, followed by the heart-wrenching conversation with Tony, left me feeling both drained and oddly liberated.I zipped up my bag and took one last look around the hotel room that had been my sanctuary for the night. After leaving Tony's apartment yesterday evening, I couldn't bear the thought of going back to the home I shared with Liam. Although Liam and I were in a good place, it just felt unfair to me to immediately run back into his arms after what had just gone down with Tony. So, I needed time to process everything, and to gather my thoughts before facing him.As I wheeled my suitcase towards the door, my phone buzzed with a text from Sammy - ‘Hey, girl. What’s going on over there? Call me when you can’I smiled, grateful for her constant

Emma’s POVHis words hit me hard, even though I knew he was probably right. “Tony, I—”He held up a hand, cutting me off gently. “It's okay, Emma. I'm not angry with you. Hurt, yes, but not angry. You can't help how you feel”.I felt a fresh wave of tears spill over. “You're too good, Tony. You deserve someone who can love you wholly, without any doubt or confusion”. A sad smile played at the corners of his mouth. “Maybe. But I fell for you, Emma. All of you, complications and all”. We sat in silence for a while, the weight of unspoken words hanging between us. Finally, Tony spoke again. “So, what are you going to do about Liam? You want to be with him, right?”I hesitated for a moment, thinking about my answer, until I eventually nodded my head. “Yes I do,” I sighed. “You know, this is honestly the first time since that day that I’m actually saying it out loud that I want to be with Liam, and it’s so crazy because even after running to Sammy’s house the moment we got back home, I s

Emma’s POV“Oh,” he said, suddenly sounding dejected. “We need to talk,” he repeated after me. “That can never be a good thing,” he chuckled bitterly as he loosened his grip on my waist until he eventually let me go completely.“Can we sit?” I asked, still looking up at him.“Of course,” he smiled slightly. “After you,” he said, pointing to a couch behind us for us to sit on.“Thank you,” I said as I sat down, my eyes still trained on him, watching his every move.“Mhm,” he nodded as he walked over to the couch, sitting down on the spot not too far away from me.“So,” he clasped his hands together after heaving out a deep breath. “What's going on, Emma?”I was silent. Not because I didn’t know what I wanted to say, but I was trying to figure out the best way to say it such that I would seem like a person and not a completely horrible one.I sighed, letting out a deep breath as my shoulders fell further than they already had.“Okay,” Tony chuckled, bitterly too, if I might add. “What’s

  • Her Unexpected Love Story    Chapter One Hundred and Thirty-Nine

Emma's POVSaturday had finally come, meaning that it was time for me to go to Maywood to see Tony. Luckily for me, Maywood from Los Angeles wasn’t far at all, so I didn’t have to leave home early or anything. As I packed my overnight bag, stuffing my charger into it, it dawned on me properly that I hadn’t actually been to Maywood to see Tony before. Since he and I started talking, the only times we’d seen each other here in L.A. was when he’d come over here for business. Obviously, it worked for us, and so we’d meet up, but that has happened just two or three times now. So, thinking about all of this, it was quite sad that the reason I was going to Maywood to see him now was to let him know of my situation with Liam. Stepping out of my room, I bumped into Liam who was on his way back into his room. “Oh. Hey. Good morning,” I greeted him, a bit startled by his presence. “Morning. How was your night?” he responded, sounding rather chipper. “It was good, thank you. And yours?” I ask

Emma's POV“Hey,” I greeted Liam as I walked into the apartment. “Oh, hey. I didn’t hear you come in,” he said, standing up from his spot on the couch, as he walked over to me. “Yeah, I’m not surprised. The volume of the TV is quite loud,” I chuckled softly. “Right. Sorry,” he snapped his fingers and rushed back to the living room to turn the TV off. “Alright,” he clasped his hands as he walked back over to me. “Hey,” he hugged me. “You good?” he asked as he released me from his embrace. “Yeah,” I nodded, then sighed. “Just tired”. “Sorry,” he said with a pitiful look on his face. “So, did you get to see what it was that caused the traffic?”“Yeah actually. It was an accident. Nothing too serious though. I mean, I wouldn’t actually know, but from what I saw, it didn’t seem like there were any casualties or anything”. “Okay. Well, that’s good,” he nodded. “Mhm,” I said, making my way into the living room, as I dropped my keys on the dining table. “What was it that you stopped

Emma’s POVFollowing my whole issue with Liam last night and our awkward encounter with each other at breakfast this morning, I think it was safe to say that I’ve been rather uncomfortable throughout my time at work so far today. With the way the air is between us right now, I just feel weird and uneasy. Sadly, this is how I feel anytime he and I have a disagreement or a fight or whatever. The man just has too much of a hold over me and it’s very annoying sometimes – like now. Trying to get work in this moment is mad difficult because I simply cannot get him off my mind. During my lunch break, I contemplated giving him a call so we could work things out, but I decided against doing that for two main reasons. The first and most important reason was that if I did that, even though he would deny it, I would most certainly come off as desperate and probably even clingy. The second reason was that, at the end of the day, he and I would still meet each other at home, and it would be far be

I let out a deep breath because I knew the next words that were going to come out of my mouth weren’t going to be pleasing for him to hear. “I’ll be going to Maywood this weekend,” I gulped. “Maywood?” he asked with furrowed brows. “What’s in Maywood?”“Tony,” I replied, my voice barely above a whisper. “What? I didn’t get that?” he asked with a look of clear confusion on his face. I sighed. “Tony,” I said, my voice still low but audible enough for him to hear me this time. “Oh,” he responded, his jaw tightening. “And why exactly are you going over there?”Uhm, okay. I definitely did not expect that kind of attitude. “Uh first of all, could you please fix your attitude?” I asked. I mean, I didn’t expect him to be jolly when I mentioned this, but I didn’t exactly expect him to give me a dirty-ass attitude either. “Sorry,” he mumbled. “Why are you going to se
