Teagan’s Point of View
They locked us in our rooms. Threw away the keys. Or rather, misplaced them until they wanted to speak with either of us. Even our windows were nailed shut. That measure alone told me all I needed to know.
Most girls would swoon at the thought of marrying the heir of Desert Sun. Hell, from what I have heard along the grapevine, some have thrown their panties at him. Whored themselves out to him every chance they got.
Anything to be the next Luna of Desert Sun. Anything to be noticed by the playboy prince who ran it all.
I, on the other hand, had been sheltered by my parents most of my life. The only man ever allowed around me were the guards that had protected me whilst I went out shopping.
Homeschooled and had no contact with other people besides my family, yet I still ended up a disappointment to my family.
Suck it, tiger parenting. You still fucking lost.
“You need to eat, Teagan. Simply refusing food isn’t going to change their minds or help you in any way. You are only harming yourself like this.” Josephine had been nagging me to eat for the last week.
All the other maids and servants stayed away. Some even spoke harshly outside my door, knowing full well I could hear them.
All of it was insufferable.
“I’m not in the mood to eat but thank you for the effort,” I stated dully and carried on staring out into the world.
Right outside my window, the world was moving on without me. The first night had left me in tears. I could hear Harland snarl and kick and fight to be let go whilst I was escorted away.
His howls didn’t stop when they put him in the furthest room to mine. They only got louder as time went on. One of the maids had said something about him being sedated.
How fucking cruel of my parents.
Josephine regarded me with a grim look. Her eyes darted to the closed door, then back to me. With light steps, she came closer. Squatted down in front of me. Her wrinkled hands settled on mine.
“What you and Harland have is unique, child. You love each other desperately. Don’t let your parents' bad decisions influence the rest of your life. Don’t let their lies rule you.” She whispered, clinging to my hand.
I let my eyes flicker down to her. Took in the urgency on her face.
Lies? What lies?
“What do you mean-”
I wasn’t done speaking before my room door burst open. Josephine jumped back a meter or two and refused to look at me again. I did the same with the person at the door. If it wasn’t Harland, then I didn’t want to see them.
“She refused another meal, ma’am,” Josephine said and bowed her head.
My mother remained at the door. Her eyes dug deep into my flesh. I could feel it. Feel her scanning me from head to toe. It was unnerving but nothing I wasn’t used to by now.
“At least she will be thin for Bellamy. Get her dressed, Josephine. The Alpha and his son will be over in an hour and I need her on her best behavior.” There was a twinge of emotion in her voice. Not much. But enough for me to give pause.
Glancing over my shoulder, I looked at the woman I had called mother all of my life. Her hair was perfectly blow-dried. Nails sparkled from a fresh manicure. Her eyes, on the other hand, looked tired.
Done with this world.
“If you let me out of this room, I will hurt anyone that comes close to me. Do you understand that?” I hissed.
She looked taken aback for a moment. Scowled at me the next. “Then I will have no choice but to sedate you as well. Bellamy doesn’t have to like your personality. Only your body. After all, you will be nothing but his broodmare.”
When had I incurred her fury? Her hatred? I was her child. Her own flesh and blood. I grew within her womb and drank milk from her. As a child, they spoiled me rotten. Gave me everything, especially their time.
Only one thing changed now and I was tossed to the side. So was Harland.
“What is wrong with you?” I couldn’t help but hiss back at her. Let every ounce of venom I had in me drip into my words.
My mother scoffed. “I’m not the abomination to nature itself. That is all you, my dear.”
***
Josephine was quiet for the rest of the process. Her head bobbed up and down several times, assessing me from every angle. Whatever she had wanted to tell me earlier was gone. Replaced by silence.
My mother had cut off her tongue. Metaphorically speaking, of course. She had also ripped out my heart.
An abomination of nature. It cut deeper than any knife ever could.
“You are all done and dolled up.” Josephine declared, taking a step away from me.
Our eyes met in the mirror. There was a glint in hers. Some proud front that slid across her face. Slowly, Josephine placed her hands on my shoulders. Smiled at me cruelly in the mirror.
“Do not let them define you, young one.”
I had no idea what she meant. They had already won. The last song had been sung. There was no way out of this and we both knew it. Or she knew something else.
“How is he?” I asked softly, making sure to mouth the words more than say them.
Josephine’s smile widened even more. She had concocted something. “He is fine. In the kitchen, enjoying some of the cake I made. I thought you would like some but alas. Orders are orders.”
She was referring to my parents prohibiting us from seeing each other.
When I frowned, Josephine patted my shoulder.
“It would be a damn fucking shame if a fire broke out right about now. The white tent they put up in the back garden is so wonderfully decorated for your engagement to the heir. Besides, such a distraction could lead to some gaps in security. People might get hurt. Or go missing.”
There it was. A small glimmer of hope in the dimness surrounding me. Our grand escape. They would send out various teams to try and find us.
It was a risk I was willing to take.
Ten minutes later, I had already packed two bags. Rucksacks that you could easily throw over your shoulder with expandable ties for when you had to shift in a hurry. Bare minimum along with a whole lot of cash that my parents stored in the hall closet safe.
Another five minutes passed in which my heart refused to calm down. Blood was rushing in my ears. Sweat beaded on my forehead.
I knew where every guard in this house was. Where they liked hanging out for smoke breaks. Even whilst they were distracted they were on guard. I had to wait.
Wait. Wait. Time it perfectly. She will help. I don't know why but she will.
Wait. Breathe. Countersteer, like Harland would.
A resounding explosion flooded my ears then. Loud and menacing. I cringed but moved into the closet again. People were going to flood the halls in three. Two. One.
The first set of footsteps marched right past the closet. I held in a breath. My father's office was to my left. It must have been him. I needed another moment or two. Everyone was going to go out and investigate.
Right then, I heard Josephine scream for help. It woke something up inside my chest. It was now or fucking never.
I rushed out of the closet then. Took the stairs two at a time. Made sure to look in all the directions once I got to the bottom. When the coast was clear, I sprinted for the kitchen. Dodged the living and dining room and hurried into the stuffy kitchen.
From the entryway, I could see an unconscious Harland. He was moaning lightly. Rolled around on the floor in soiled clothes. Blood stained his shirt. His pants.
I stifled my reaction. Reminded myself that there was no time to lament his condition. We needed to go and we needed to go now.
Hurrying forward, I grabbed a pitcher of water from the counter. Slammed down beside him, nearly spilling the water. I had no idea how he had gotten here but I was relieved to see him. To be near him once more.
"Baby, please forgive me for this," I mumbled hastily. Gripped the pitcher firmly in my hands.
One. Two. Thr-
I threw the water all over him. Aimed for his head more than the rest of his body. It seemed to do the job rather well.
Harland snapped awake, sitting bolt upright in the process. His eyes were wild as he took in everything around him. A snarl curled on his lips.
Then he noticed me and everything softened. He inhaled.
"Hey there, sexy lady."

Bellamy's Point of View
There was an orange sheen against the fading horizon. The closer we got to the van der Merwe house, the larger it grew. Until I realized it was smoke that contrasted the orange.
My father didn't seem alarmed by the sight. He barely paid it any mind, even as we pulled into the estate. Even as we walked closer to the front door.
Alpha Jonah was dead set on getting this engagement through the gate. All of my protestation in the world couldn't budge him. Or sway his mood in any other direction.
I stopped trying after the third fight. There was no use in it anymore. Not like my disdain for him made him feel any differently.
We stood on the porch for another good five minutes before my father lost his temper. Growled loudly that he was going to the other side of the house to see what was going on.
I wanted to tell him that he was either blind or stupid but remained silent. He left without another fuss.
And that's when I saw her. My mate. The most beautiful woman I had ever laid eyes on. Her dark brown hair whipped in the wind. Her narrowed shoulders jutted out prominently in the dress she wore.
But, she was clutching to another man. Intimately, might I add. Anger coiled in my stomach. Reared its head for as long as I had them in my sight.
As always, my father had to ruin it for me. Finding my mate should have been wonderful and he threw cold water all over my skin.
"Fucking get over here, Bellamy. The house is on fire and we don't know where your bride is."
Just like that, I was thrown back into my shitty reality.
Teagan’s Point of View“You are out of your mind if you think that I am going back there! That pack can rot for all I care!” I screeched, fire crawling up my insides.Horrid, acrid memories clawed their way to the front of my mind. The fleeing. The heartache. All of it thrust upon me once more as I had to contemplate going back there. How alone it felt, braving the world.Ciaran sighed deeply, pinching the bridge of his nose whilst Alvara stood behind him. There was a kind smile on her face. Gentle in many ways that contradicted Ciaran’s harshness.Harland was nowhere in sight.“I wouldn’t ask this of you if I didn’t think you wouldn’t be able to do it, Teagan. You agreed to be our ambassador. This is your first task. I also know that you are familiar with the pack.” Ciaran said, still pinching the bridge of his nose.Ozias was leaning against the wall beside me. Looked less than pleased to be there but had no choice. He knew my feelings regarding Desert Sun. Nothing pleasant came fro
Teagan's Point of ViewBy the time the sun rose, I was already awake. Had been for the last couple of hours, just staring at the side of Harland's face. His chest rose and fell evenly. Lips were parted slightly. The picture of relaxation. Of peace.Whilst I on the other hand felt like drowning every sorrow I had with a bottle of whiskey. Not a very ladylike quality but one my mate had accepted through the years.Somehow his scars had healed. Whereas mine remained black and blue.Exhaling deeply, I flung the covers off of myself. Swung my legs over the edge of the bed and groaned as I stretched. The more my chest expanded with air, the hollower I felt.I was leaving today and there was nothing I could do about it. There was no Harland to keep me sane. Keep me out of prison. Only me and my thoughts and the cunts that had put them there.Sighing, I slid off the bed and into the closet. A rather large walk-in that Harland had specially commissioned for me once he got promoted. Once he got
Teagan's Point of ViewThe air was as dry as I had remembered. Nothing but sand for miles on either side of the airport as I climbed down the rickety steps of the small plane. But this was Desert Sun. What did I expect from a remote town in the middle of mines? A 5-star fucking holiday? Not.Even the airport itself was minuscule. Nothing compared to the grand luxury of Windhoek airport. I was officially in the backcountry. The place where few humans dared to venture. The scarf around my head was tight against my scalp. Pressed in from all sides as the winds threatened to blow me away. At least it kept the sand out of my hair. Maybe I should have opted for pants instead of the pencil skirt. But I wanted to look all business and no pleasure. Not that this place could provide me with any pleasure. It could barely provide itself with fucking water.Gritting my teeth, I sauntered down the path to the entrance to the building. Jonah would send someone to come and fetch me. Or I hoped. I ha
Teagan's Point of ViewThe inside of the house was the picture of opulence. With the foyer alone that spanned up until the third floor and a crystal chandelier hanging in the middle of it. Exposed sandstone walls. Garling fountain in the middle of it. But I couldn't walk another step before a maid appeared out of nowhere. Snatched my luggage right out of my hands with a beaming smile on her face. She bowed her head at Jonah before scuttling off."Another will come to show you to your room," Jonah assured me and walked further into the house. "Would you like something to drink in the meanwhile?" He called over his shoulder. His hands were stuffed into his beige pants. Feet bare against the light floors. Everywhere I looked there were golden accents. Light classical music played in the background. This was straight out of a movie. Something I never thought I would see.Ciaran never spared any expense with his homes but this was on another level. Some warped version of a health spa only
Teagan's Point of ViewI could feel the banging of the bass right through the walls. A relentless meowling entwined with it. Some might call it singing, I called it harassment to my ears. It was somewhere in the early morning hours when the music started. People giggled and laughed along with the horrendous assault on my ears. Bottles of booze crashed to the floor, making the people pause. Right before they carried on in those loud voices.Groaning, I turned on my stomach and plopped the pillow over my head. Pressed it hard against me but to no avail. The meowling carried right through. Pulsed at the base of my skull until I had had enough.Flinging off the pillow, it thumped against the far wall. Slid to the floor. I could barely hear it. Could barely comprehend my own thoughts. How could Jonah allow such loud noise in his house, much less at this time of the night?"Can you keep it down out there! Some of us want to sleep!" I screamed at the top of my lungs. There was no sign of th
Teagan's Point of ViewI was out of that house before the sun even rose. Not that I could fall asleep again after seeing Bellamy. Realized what he was to me.But fuck that. Fuck this.I had Harland. I needed no one else. Loved no one else. And I sure as fuck didn't have the capacity for more than one mate.My only solution to the problem? Get my work done and leave this place once and for all. It seemed simple enough but Jonah wasn't going to make that easy. Not in the slightest. I had to find the weak spots here. Had to exploit them to the best of my capabilities.Last night, Ciaran had given me full power to promise anything and everything. Nothing was off of the table. From his urgency, I could tell that this venture was more important than he had first led us to believe.Something else was brewing. Inside Eiecrunt. Desert Sun. The world. But that was none of my concern. All I had to do was finish the task at hand and carry on with my life. Go back home to my loving mate and my own
Teagan's Point of ViewI told Alvara all that I could. How dismayed I was by what I found. Desert Sun was perfect in ways I couldn't have fathomed. From my childhood until now, things had changed drastically. Everything was different. People were well looked after in every sector of this pack. It made me nauseous to my toes because it meant the deal might fall through after all.My friend took my rambling in stride. Listened silently until I was panting and on my second coffee. Then her sunshine voices beamed through on the other end. "We have something else to offer him besides help with the pack." She replied, keeping an upbeat tone in her voice. In times like these, this was why I adored Alvara so much. She kept her cool. Her calm. Marched right into the pits of hell with a smile plastered to her face. Sighing, I hunched over my table. Gripped the side of my face for dear life as a headache started forming. "Like what? The bastard only likes money and fucking flaunting it." I gro
Teagan's Point of ViewI couldn't remember the last time I ran. Maybe about two years ago. I was on yet another stint to get healthier. To grow myself as a person and thought I would indulge in some exercise. Needless to say, that had been the last time.Well, today I made an exception to my vow to never run again. I booked it back to the pack house. People swerved to miss me as I came in hot. My Chanel handbag flapped against my side whilst my ribs expanded and contracted relentlessly to keep my lungs from collapsing at any moment.By the time I reached the pack house, I was a sweaty mess with rumpled clothes and melting mascara. Not a pretty sight but everyone who saw me could go fuck themselves. If you saw me running in the future, you should run as well. There might be danger about. The only reason I would ever book it again.Unless Bellamy showed up and I had to high-tail it out of there. But that was something else entirely.I couldn't get past my guilt. It was a monster inside
7 Months Later Teagan's Point of View "Who has the baby bag!" Ulrich screamed, flitting from room to room as he scrambled to get the one thing he was tasked with. "Already in the car," I mumbled, slipping out of my soaked nightgown. Although I doubted he heard me. No one could hear me above their panic right now. Who thought the baby would come in the middle of the night? Not fucking me. Not when I had finally figured out a way to sleep with such an enormous stomach. "Did you install the car seat like I asked?" Bellamy screamed back. I could hear him in the living room. He had forgotten to set up the spare cot downstairs. Thought now would be a good time to do it. Rolling my eyes, I slipped into a clean dress. Didn't bother with underwear. They were going to come off, anyway. "I can't find the fucking car keys! Who had them last?" Harland screamed. The house was echoing with their voices. Bounced around relentlessly. So it was no help to remind him that they were on the
Bellamy's Point of View"Where is he!" I screamed down the moist hallway. Down here in the earth, everything was damp. Which was strange, given we were in the middle of a desert. But that wasn't the problem right now. The problem was Felix. The bastard wasn't anywhere near the cells. Hell, his scent wasn't even here, which meant he had never made it down here to begin with. "Heir, sir, Alpha," The guard nervously stammered, sweat beading on his forehead. "From the list in the office, he was brought here right after you asked. The last man on duty here even swore he had booked him in."He had lied, no doubt. Or this little maggot was. Either way, Felix had never been here. No doubt thanks to all of his bribery. "Find him! The enemy is on our doorstep and you let our only fucking bargaining chip escape!" I roared and spun on my heels to march back the way I had come in. We had evacuated everyone in the town within an hour. Left only shells for homes and shops. Mariland and Keagan
Teagan's Point of View"Get most of the civilians to the ranch! Don't trust fucking any of the guards! The moment they try something funny, kill without mercy." Bellamy all but screamed as we stopped in front of the house. The two cars that had followed us from the desert were barely full, compared to when they left with us in the first place. So many of Bellamy's men had turned. Or died. "What do you want me to do?" I asked, clinging to his arm. Watched as his face shifted. Took in everything around us all at once. Those caramel eyes turned towards me. Blinked slowly."Why did you call my brother?" Bellamy asked in a whisper that no one else would be able to hear. Not with all of the commotion taking place around us.I stiffened. Twitched my eyes away from him.I knew he was going to be upset. I just hadn't thought it would come so soon. Not when we were still in crisis mode."Because I would rather take his help than see any of you in a grave. We need his man-power and he is more
Teagan's Point of ViewWe headed out into the eastern part of the desert with several guards in tow. The ones who stayed behind with Felix were informed of the situation and instructed to keep him shackled at all times.Killing him wasn't an option. Not until we could safely get Jonah back. The moment we had him or deemed him-I swallowed down the lump in my throat, shoving the thought that he might already be gone to the back of my mind.Bellamy was never going to forgive himself if he didn't say goodbye to his father. Especially after the note Jonah had left in his last file.As if he knew he was walking into his death."There... On the dune just past that large outcropping." Ulrich said from the passanger side.He was looking west now. Scanned the horizon fervently with the stars shining down on us.Out here in the middle of the night was the best time. With no light pollution, the air was clear. The Milkyway a shiny symbol above us.But in the direction Ulrich was looking, someone
Teagan's Point of ViewThe end note left my mind reeling. Shot a wave of dizziness through my body. Jonah knew. Knew about Harland being here and about Ulrich. Knew that we had taken some of his files. And he had done nothing about it. Actually counted on the fact that we might come snooping again. Now he was somewhere in the desert, likely dead, from what the note implied."We have to tell Bellamy." I breathed, feeling my lungs quiver with each word.Ulrich's eyes shot towards mine. Eyebrows nearly touched his hairline. "There is no fucking way I'm letting you go down there by yourself. We might not be able to hear what is happening but I can assure you, it isn't going to be pretty." "His father can be somewhere out there fighting for his fucking life and you just want to keep that from him when we can try and help?" I screeched, balling my hands into tight fists.A sheepish look passed over his face then. One of pain as well. "It's not like the guy is winning the Father of the Yea
Teagan's Point of ViewHarland moved closer to me on instinct. Shifted his weight to his dominant leg. Geared himself up for a confrontation if the need arose."What do you mean he can handle himself? Why would he have to?" I pushed more, feeling a shift of energy all around me.Felix gave me another long and cruel smile. Took one step forward before I noticed several men behind him. All tall and menacing. Brooding hulks that engulfed the space we stood in.None of them looked familiar. Or even scented to me that I knew them."Let's just say that Jonah isn't the only one fighting for his life right now." My heart slammed into my throat. Bellamy. He was talking about Bellamy. Harland sensed my urgency. Spun around and pushed me lightly to the staff door on the other side of the kitchen. "Go. I can handle this." He urged, fear lacing his voice. He was my mate and I loved him dearly. But he wasn't the best fighter around. Ulrich, on the other hand, was.I nodded and broke for the door
Teagan's Point of View Even with everything aired out, Harland barely looked my way. His shoulders were still sagging. Hair fell into his eyes. And whenever I tried to make eye contact with him he would look away the moment he noticed. The air wasn't clear yet. "He is going to be away for two days. I say we haul up in the pack house and start digging for whatever we can find on him. I told him I'm your new assistant, so he won't question my scent. Harland can lead the run tonight so that no one questions your absence too much. Get the shit and-" Bellamy shook his head in the driver's seat. Locked eyes with me in the back of the car. At least Harland had agreed to drive with us instead of walking. "No. I'll go lead the run. They won't expect Teagan to be there, seeing as the news of her pregnancy has spread like wildfire. Jonah can smell Harland in the house when he gets back because by then we will have everything we need to dethrone him. Just make sure that Felix doesn't j
Ulrich's Point of View Their family was fucked up. Beyond fucked up. Made me thankful that I had grown up in the foster system. Drama on drama on drama. Like there was no end to it. But it shaped Harland and Teagan into who they were. Gave me the greatest blessing I could ever have. Teagan. Our baby. A future where I didn't have to kill or maim. A stable home. Well, it was going to be a stable home the minute all of this madness passed. Died down. Which wasn't going to happen anytime soon, I was sure of that. "Harland. Wait up!" I screamed and followed him down the driveway. If he heard me, he gave no sign of it. Continued marching toward the gate and away from all the shit this place gave him. "Harland!" I tried again and upped my pace. Broke into a sprint. When I touched his shoulder, he whirled on me. Those were tears in his eyes. Snot peeking out from his nose. He was crying. And I could feel his pain as if it were my own. "Something wrong?" He asked, wiping his face
Teagan's Point of View Jessebelle brought out tea and coffee for everyone. Stood at the door and watched as the drama unfolded. Her little smirk of satsifaction upon seeing Mariland's distraught face was enough to make me smile as well. "Now then, we have something to drink. The mood in the room seems to be less intense. Care to explain what happened?" Bellamy asked, placing his coffee on the small table in the middle of the room. We were sitting around the living room like we were friends. Discussing the weather and upcoming plans. Like we weren't hoping the other would just fall over and die. Keagan sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. Placed on leg over the other. His eyes slid my way. Took me in with a remorseful look that had my bones aching. Was he ever as bad as Mariland? Not really. But he permitted it and that was all the confirmation I needed to not pity him. "When we mated, we tried for years to have a child. Jonah was freshly made the Alpha of Desert Sun and h
