Chapter 6: Noah Hatches a Plan

"What?" Noah said.

As if his day wasn't going downhill. Yes, he was on a plane with a beautiful woman, but the beautiful woman wanted something from him. They always did. She wanted an interview and he wanted peace of mind.

Neither of those things was going to happen.

Noah took the phone from her as the pilot came onto the intercom. "We're about to take off. Please put your phones in airplane mode."

"I can connect to the Wifi as soon as the plane is in the air," Noah said. "Where is this? What social media?"

"Instagram," she said as he handed her phone back to her.

She did as the pilot instructed and then tucked her phone away. Noah had seen the picture long enough to know what it looked like. They looked as if they were having an intimate moment. From the outside, he could see how reporters thought he'd dropped into the airport to pick up his love. He'd been holding her hand and looking down at her with a curious, but a delighted expression. That hadn't been what he'd been feeling at the time. He'd only wanted to protect an innocent bystander. Now he knew she wasn't so innocent.

"I'm sorry, Noah. I had no idea."

He put up a hand as the plane left the ground. "It's not completely your fault. The picture does paint us as more intimate than we are."

She frowned and nodded, settling back into her seat. Her hands gripped the armrests.

"Are you afraid of flying?" Noah asked.

"No. I'm not a fan of takeoff. Once we're in the air I'll be fine," she said.

She could have lied to him. She could have passed it off as nothing, but she'd been honest with him. That was a point in her favor, not that he was keeping track.

The plane leveled off and she loosened her grip on the armrests. She flexed her hands as if to relieve some pressure.

"These armrests aren't comfortable when you're resting on them. I can't imagine it is any better when you have a death grip on them," Noah said.

He wanted to lighten the mood even if it only worked for him. She gave him a weak smile. "All I wanted was a scoop."

"Now you're part of the scoop."

She rubbed a hand down her face. This affected her more than him, but he'd always been one to turn things around. He just had to think. What would make this better? "We don't have to talk about it. No one should be at the next landing sight or think you'll be back here."

She frowned. "Do you have a girlfriend in the wings that is going to be jealous?"

He chuckled. "Is that the reporter talking, Hailey? Or you?"

"Both, Noah. I still want the scoop, but I also need to know if there's going to be backlash from someone else. I don't need some crazy woman spreading rumors about me."

He didn't answer the question at first. "Spreading rumors?"

"That's how women do things sometimes. We withdraw support from someone who isn't following the rules."

"Sounds like high school," Noah said.

"It just is."

He studied her for a moment. She was being transported to someplace she hadn't decided to go, but she was taking it all with aplomb. Then again, she did get herself into this predicament by pursuing him.

He couldn't completely feel sorry for her. "Why gossip?"

"You're steering me away from the interview," she said.

His life wasn't that interesting and he didn't want to talk about it. "I am. I don't have a girlfriend and I don't plan on having one."

She cocked her head. "Why not?"

He let out a long sigh. This was deeper than he wanted to go with anyone let alone a reporter. "Off the record?"

She frowned but seemed to be calculating something. She finally nodded. "Okay."

"I've been hurt too many times. I don't believe in relationships. They are more trouble than they are worth," he said.

She nodded. "I get it. I have a trail of exes that I'd rather forget. I have no plans on adding any more," she said.

"So we are equally cynical about having a relationship."

It was a bonding moment. Even if he never saw Hailey again, he knew there would always be one person on this planet that understood his need to stay single. Too bad he couldn't find a way to get away from his adoring fans while he kept them as fans.

"It seems that way," Hailey said. "Relationships bring heartbreak, no matter what type they are. Besides, no one can live up to my standards and I'm okay with that," she said.

That was a loaded statement. If the plane ride was going to be longer, he might ask more probing questions, but they'd be on the ground in a short time. They'd part ways and he'd never see her again.

Some part of him was sad at that. Why? He'd just met her and he hated her job. He'd never liked the interviews or press conferences that he'd been forced to do. He could opt out of many of them. He'd gotten big enough, but then he could come off as a snob. His fans bought his music and he felt he owed them something.

Then an idea struck him. A crazy, stupid idea.

"Where did you just go?" she asked.

"Why?"

"Because a whole host of emotions crossed your face," she said.

"Good thing I don't play poker."

"Good thing. Your face lit up for a moment."

He nodded looking down at her. "I have an idea. You're going to think it's crazy, but I think it can work for both of us."

She eyed him but shrugged. "Go ahead. I can't go anywhere and I might as well listen to your crazy idea."

He rolled it over in his mind and chose the right words. Then again the idea was so crazy that there were no right words. Noah just had to hope that Hailey could see the genius in his idea.

He shifted so that he was looking at her fully. "Pretend to be my girlfriend."

Hailey blinked. "What?""You heard me. Neither of us wants a relationship. You pretend to be my girlfriend," Noah said. "This is nuts, Noah."But then again, was it? She shook her head. No. No one would believe that she was Noah's girlfriend. "What reservations are you having?" he asked. "I don't even know where to begin. We don't even know each other.""We can figure that part out," Noah said. He looked at her with earnestness in his eyes. He reminded her of a puppy dog looking for a treat. He was more handsome than she'd originally thought. He had eyes that were ice blue with dark lashes fringing them. Women would kill for those lashes. Women would kill to be in this position. This close to a celebrity and it was her job. "Noah. This is crazy.""I know, but it's a crazy world and this could be the answer to many problems."She wanted to believe him as she searched his face. Was he pranking her? No one would believe this. He seemed serious. "Are you kidding me?"He shook his head

That was not a stipulation that Hailey had expected or wanted. "I can't write about you?""No. Now that you are my girlfriend, pretend or not, I'm off-limits."She had to think about this and she didn't have much time. With the plane landing, she only had a few minutes before it would come to stop where Noah would get out. She could stay on the plane and never see him again. That meant not getting any scoop other than he wasn't dating Cassandra. He could deny anything she wrote about him. Her credibility would be shot. Or she could off the plane with him, as his girlfriend, but never get his story. She could get other stories. Could she sell this to her editor?"Is it that difficult a choice? We can write up a contract and make it all legal. You'll know what I expect and vice versa," he said.Noah sounded so reasonable, but it was her career on the line. This affected her more than him. They did find something in her size. Hailey guessed that it wasn't all supermodels that used private jets. It was a life she only reported on and didn't live it. The blouse and pants fit her well and it was the nicest material she'd ever worn that wasn't cotton. Silk maybe? She didn't know and she wasn't going to ask and show her ignorance. She intended to fake it until this was all over. She would walk off this plane as if she dated rock stars every day. Noah wasn't better than her. "The coast still looks clear. Just one person is wandering around the tarmac," the pilot said.Noah nodded. "Thanks." He turned his gaze to Hailey. "You ready?""As I'll ever be."They stood as the pilot opened the airstairs. The warmth of the sun hit Hailey and she blinked as she put her foot on the first step. There were no camera flashes. No reporters shouting questions. There were logistical things she had to deal with, like getting back to her car, but that was okay. She felt as if Noah was on her s

Hailey had no idea how she was going to do that with her promise to Noah, but she didn't say anything to her boss. They hung up and Hailey frowned. "Problem?" Noah asked. Hailey shook herself. "No, I don't think so.""Is your boss happy?" he asked. He leaned on a wall inside the hangar, his legs crossed at his ankles. "Happy might be an understatement," Hailey said. The woman wouldn't stay happy if Hailey didn't deliver a scoop on Noah. She'd figure that out later. She couldn't betray him right off. She looked him over. The man could have shoved her out of the plane at any time. Instead, he protected her and then made the situation even better when he found out who she was. She couldn't betray him that easily. Her mind searched for a solution, but she knew she'd come up with one at some point. Not right now that the man in question was staring at her with a bemused smile on his face. He was known for that look and it probably charmed the pants off many women. Not Hailey. She was i

"I wrote the contract, but I still don't like it," Justin Lake, Noah's lawyer, and best friend said. "This is nuts, Noah."Noah let his friend rant, but he wasn't backing down. This was a solution to several of his problems. He'd keep Hailey as his pretend girlfriend while he was filming. She'd get what she wanted and he'd get what he wanted. Noah didn't see the problem. "I think you are making way too big a deal of this, Justin.""No, I'm not. You're entering into a contract with a woman you just met.""At least I had you draft a contract," Noah said.He paced outside the storefront office. Hailey was inside waiting for him. She didn't mention bringing her lawyer. She'd get the first crack at perusing the contract, but Noah did not doubt that Justin made it ironclad. He was second in a class at Harvard Law. The man knew how to write things so they couldn't be broken. "Yes, you did, but you were kind of vague. It may need revisions. We don't know what Hailey's lawyer will want to add

"Hey kiddo," her father said, sounding as if he were in good spirits.Hopefully, today was a good day for him. No bad news. She didn't know if her brain could handle anything else. "How are things?""The nurses are giving me fits," he said. It wasn't a complaint and she knew it wasn't true. Most likely he was giving the nurses at his rehabilitation facility a hard time. He didn't mean it. He was a good man, but he was still adjusting to his circumstances. He'd gone from running his own business to being the victim of a crime to now having health issues. It had been a quick and steep decline for her father, and the man still hadn't grasped it. He wanted to have command of his life the way he always had. She sympathized with him, but the nurses weren't at fault. "Please behave, Dad.""I am behaving. Why do you take their side?""Because I know you."He wasn't angry at her. She had only seen her father angry at her once and she'd deserved it. He could get cranky knowing that he'd lost

Noah's breath went away, but he didn't let Hailey know what he'd heard. She'd told someone that she loved them. He thought she'd said hello to her father, but he wanted to be sure. "Problem?"She sat there for a moment staring off into space. He wanted to comfort her because she was in some distress. Then she shook herself and smiled at him. It didn't reach her eyes. "No problem."Noah didn't believe her, but he let it go. He would investigate further. Was it her father that she'd been talking to? She hadn't mentioned a boyfriend or he wouldn't have suggested what they were about to sign a contract over. He cocked his head, but she rose before he could say anything more. When they were both back in Roland's office, the lawyer looked from one to the other. "I read through this and I find it highly unusual."Noah shrugged. Hailey liked the feel of her hand in Noah's more than she wanted to admit. He was affecting her. She didn't want that to happen. Having feelings for Noah would complicate things. He looked back at her with a smile. "You ready?""As I'm ever going to be."She wasn't sure what kind of onslaught there would be, but being on the other side of it was interesting. It might make her do her job more gently in the future. Noah shoved the door open and stepped out into the alley behind the lawyer's office. The limousine idled a few feet away. Noah looked around. "Coast is clear."He didn't drop her hand until he pulled open the car door. "Get in."She did as he said, but chafed at the tone. They weren't in any danger."He jumped in behind her. "Noah," Hailey said as she slid off of her father's bed. Noah strode into the room. He still had manners so he extended his hand to Hailey's father. "I'm Noah Magellan."Judd took his hand and the grip was firm. He looked a lot better than the last time Noah had been here. Judd had been unconscious. Noah had done his best to give Hailey and her father space while he was recuperating. "Judd Johnson.""I've heard a lot about you," Noah said. His gaze strayed to Hailey who hadn't moved away from her father. Her mouth hung up as if she'd been surprised to see him. "I've heard a lot about you, too.""Thank you for that note, sir. It has made a difference in my life," Noah said. That was why he was here. Life was too short to be away from the woman he wanted by his side. "I'm glad. It's important to remember that," Judd said.Noah now couldn't take his gaze off Hailey. "Can we go somewhere and talk?" Noah asked. "If you don't mind."Judd waved a hand. He was probably healthy enough to help her deal with it all or even just listen. She sat on the edge of his hospital bed. He would be released later today back to his rehabilitation facility. His prognosis was better than it had ever been. She couldn't be happier to know she would have her father back. Having made a mess of her life, it might be nice to just be under his wing again. Even if it was only for a little bit. "I'm not sure about amazing, but I feel better than I have in a long time. The surgery worked and I couldn't be happier.""Me, neither.""You don't look so happy, Hailey. Troubles?"She frowned and sighed. That was ending and then he could tell her how he truly felt. His heart leaped in his chest at the idea that he and Hailey could begin a true life together. No contract. No lying. He couldn't wait to bring her back to Tennessee and work out the logistics of them being together. He could build a house for her father on their property. He would do anything for Hailey. He wanted to spend his life making her happy and if she needed her father close then he would accommodate. The crew member came back. Life is short. That was what was on the piece of paper that Hailey's father had given Noah. Hailey wondered if she should take that advice also. Production of the film had been delayed because of Noah's stitches, but now they were down to the last days. She hadn't made any moves and they'd hummed along like friends who kiss. If Hailey was going to express anything to Noah, she needed to do it soon. He'd invited her on set that day and she accepted. She hadn't gotten to see much filming last time and her editor had had her busy with other assignments. Today would be the day. Hailey would stake her claim. She'd gotten the impression from Noah that he was interested so she was going to go for it in a public way. Kevin parked the new limousine Noah had rented. The driver still had some bruising on his face, that was the last of the evidence of their accident. A man had been arrested in the case and Noah and Hailey would have to testify. She wasn't afraid and it would cause Noah to come

Noah breathed a sigh of relief. It wasn't one of his fans that put them in the emergency department. It was some random person. He didn't like that they were there at all, but at least he didn't need to feel responsible. She squeezed his hand as she answered questions. "I'm sorry we couldn't tell you more. It was dark."The office grimaced. "It always is and it isn't the same car every time, but we think it is the same person. The accidents have happened in the same mile stretch of that road," the officer said.He closed up the notepad he was writing on a frown on his face. He handed Noah a card. "If you think of anything else, please call me.""Will do," Noah said. "You're going to have to get a new limousine," Hailey said. "If there ever was a first-world problem, this is it. Kevin called a tow truck. I called a rental place to get a car to drive us home," Noah said. "Should any of us be driving?" she asked. She had a point and Noah had no plans to make Kevin drive them home. He

"Is everyone okay?" Kevin asked from the front. When Hailey looked that way, she could see blood. "Sore, but I think I'm okay. What about you Kevin?""The airbag hit me that's it. Nothing was broken from what I can tell.""Noah?" Hailey asked. He had been quiet, but he reached out to her. "I'm bleeding."Hailey could see that he had a gash on his head. "I'll call for an ambulance.""Already done," Kevin said.Hailey had an overwhelming desire to just get out of the car. She needed fresh and to make sure she was still in one piece. "Let's climb out."Her door was wedged into a bush and she couldn't budge it. "Let's try my side."Kevin was outside yanking the door open. "Let's assess and meet the ambulance crew by the road. We didn't travel that far down the hill."Noah took Hailey's hand as they ascended to the road. When they reached it, they found a streetlight where they could look at their wounds. They were all bleeding. "We are a sight, I'm sure," Hailey said. "Do you think that

"Filming always seemed glamorous."Noah grimaced. "It's a lot of waiting around to make it all look seamless in the end.""I guess it's like sausage. You shouldn't see it made. It loses its appeal," Hailey said. "I have a confession to make," Noah said. Hailey's heart seized. What could Noah need to confess? "Okay.""I've been putting off telling you something.""Go ahead," Hailey said. She couldn't imagine it was any worse than her revelation of juvenile hall. If Noah had something comparable to say, he would have said it then. Still, she couldn't imagine what was going on in his head. He stopped them and turned to her. "I have an event tonight.""Okay." She shrugged. "What kind of event?""It's a fundraiser for a charity I often give to. I'm not in town usually, but they always invite me. I should have told you sooner. It's tomorrow night."Hailey wasn't sure how to unpack all of that. "Do I need to attend?""Yes, and be a loving girlfriend."That wasn't going to be difficult. She

Hailey studied him. "Like a date?""Yes. It's normal for a man to take his girlfriend out for dates.""But I'm not a real one.""But we need to be in public at least a little bit. I feel as if you've been cramped in this house for days since your father's operation. You've been to see him and nothing else. Let's go for a drive.""Is Kevin available?""I gave him the afternoon off. Just you and me, Hailey."She liked that idea, but why was he doing this? No one would see them."I scoped out a cool road along the river," Noah said."You have a plan."It sounded like a date. It felt like a date. Why was he doing this? She would have preferred to only pretend when they had to. She would lose her heart to him if she kept spending time with him. His face had that small smile on it that she found irresistible. She was going to give in and she knew it. She'd have a good time, but at what cost? "It'll get your mind off of your father," Noah said. He was always thinking of her. "So what's th

Noah was still thinking about that kiss the next day when he was on set. He was distracted, but he'd learned his lines so no one noticed. Well, Cassandra might have noticed. They were filming outside again and the weather was cooperating. Noah couldn't complain about the day. What he could complain about were the constant interruptions. He and Hailey had laid low since their interaction with the reporters. He knew eventually they would have to make a statement, and his publicist was working on it. Until then, she's insisted that they stay out of the public eye.Noah would do that happily if there wasn't a gaggle of his fans in the parking lot to the studio. An amateur could have found out where they were filming. The director, Marvin Knight, had built it himself so he could be close to his family. What he hadn't provided was enough security to keep the crowd away. Marvin grimaced as he yelled, "Cut."The crowd shouldn't be there making that much noise and Noah sighed. Cassandra loo
