She looked at him, seeing the struggle in his eyes. “What are we supposed to do, then? Pretend this never happened?”

“I don’t know,” he said, his voice barely above a whisper. “But I can’t let you go without a fight. I need you to understand how much you mean to me.”

Seraphina felt a pang of guilt. “Alex, I care about you too. But I’m with Damien. He’s a good man, and I love him.”

“I know,” Alex said, frustration creeping into his voice. “But can’t you see that we have something special? Something worth fighting for?”

She shook her head, feeling tears prick at the corners of her eyes. “I can’t keep hurting people I care about. This is tearing me apart.”

Alex reached out, taking her hand in his. “I’m not asking you to make a decision right now. I just... I need to know if there’s a part of you that feels the same way I do.”

Seraphina looked down at their intertwined hands, her mind a whirlwind of emotions. “Of course, I feel something for you, Alex. But feelings aren’t always enough.”
