[Elise’s POV]
“Alright,” I announce, fixing my gaze on Rosco. “Why did you want to get me alone?”
As I speak, I yank my arm free of his hold and press my hand against his chest.
“Did you want to rethink that rejection?”
“Don’t be absurd,” he growls, smacking my hand off. “You know damn well that there will never be anything between us.”
Smirking, I cross my arms and wait as he stares me down. I had to admit, it was pretty damn funny that he was so full of himself, and it was because of that that I couldn’t help but pick on him. Maybe it was a family trait since his cousin was equally fun to tease.
“Then what did you want?” I ask when the silence continues to fall around us. “You ruined my chance to have more fun with your cousin, so it better be good.”
“My cousin,” he repeats, his gaze narrowing. “I hope that you will be smart enough to know that you have no place beside him.”
“Says who?” I demand, taking offense. “Don’t tell me that you have a cousin complex. Don’t you know that’s gross? Does your wife know that you’re so protective of him? If not, I can.”
“That’s enough of your bullshit!” Rosco growls, his aura exploding around us and pushing against my skin. “I’m not in the mood for your shit.”
Letting a slow smile spread across my face, I let my own aura begin to trickle out. Who the hell did he think he was trying to assert his dominance against me? Even if my dear sister didn’t possess the alpha gene, that didn’t mean that I didn't, and I would be damned if I let him feel like he was my superior.
Okay, well, maybe given my current circumstances, he was, but this was something entirely different, and I wasn’t in the mood to back down.
“Are you challenging me?” Rosco asks now, his eyes flashing dangerous gold. “Denali just gave birth and needs time to recover, but that doesn’t mean that I’ll go easy on you if you...”
“Yeah, yeah,” I sigh, drawing my aura back in. “You won’t go easy on me if something happens.” I continue, rolling my eyes. “I get it. You don’t have to spout the same bullshit all the good guys do. Anyway, you were the one who started it. I was enjoying my time with my sister, and you pulled me away, so could you please tell me what the hell it is that you want?”
“What was with you earlier?”
“I don’t understand what you mean,” I say, feeling my unease beginning to grow as memories of the dream I just had emerge. “Why don’t you...”
“Cut the shit,” Rosco growls. “You were looking for something on Serenity. What the hell was it?”
Remaining quiet, I let the images of those cloaked figures come flashing back as my stomach churns and I taste bile beginning to make its way up my throat.
“Tell me,” I say slowly, pushing them away. “Have you by chance offended anyone else?”
At my words, a look of anger flashes across Rosco’s features, but he doesn’t speak, and when his brows begin to furrow, I know that he is considering my words.
“I was an alpha heir,” he points out. “There are many I offended because of that.”
“Then does your family bear any curses?”
This time, Rosco’s gaze darkens and his lips twitch into a terrifying scowl, and I realize too late that I’ve said the wrong thing. Before I can react, his hand is shooting out and wrapping around my throat.
Gasping, I feel myself being pushed against a wall and then lifted off my feet.
“What the fuck are you trying to say?” He growls, his face close to mine. “Are you keeping important information from us?”
As he speaks, the door to Denali’s room opens, and William comes rushing out with a look of shock on his face. When he spots us, he rushes forward and wraps a hand around Rosco’s wrist.
“Rosco,” he hisses, attempting to pry his hand from my throat. “What the hell do you think you’re doing? Do you know what Denali will think if she sees...”
“Rosco.”
“Too late,” I manage as Rosco works to cut off my airway even more. “It seems you made too much noise, brother-in-law.”
“Rosco,” Denali repeats, her voice echoing around us. Even though she tries to sound strong, it is clear she is exhausted from giving birth, and when a hiss of pain escapes her, I’m being dropped while Rosco rushes to her side.
Sucking in deep lungfuls of air, I collapse onto the ground and turn my gaze to the lovers as Rosco gathers Denali in his arms. The scene leaves me with a sense of emptiness, but before I can let the pain of already being rejected consume me, I tear my eyes away and bring them to meet William’s.
“Are you alright?” He murmurs, kneeling down in front of me. “I’m not sure what happened, but I’m sure Rosco didn’t mean...”
“He did,” I counter, brushing away the hand. William reaches out to touch me. “Don’t forget that I’m a criminal and a murderer."
For a moment, William doesn’t speak as he processes what I’ve said, and before he can collect himself, I’m standing.
“About your question,” I say now, turning toward Rosco. “Make sure that Serenity is protected at all times.”
“What the fuck is that supposed to mean?” He demands as Denali’s confused gaze comes to rest on me. “What do you know that we don’t?”
“It could be nothing or it could be something, but this world is dark and cruel.” I respond slowly. “I suggest you sit down with your parents and figure out if there is some dark history that you aren’t aware of.”
“Elise,” Denali says, confusion coloring her words. “What are you implying?”
“And you,” I continue, focusing on her. “Is there anything you know about our parents that you aren’t sharing?”
“Nothing,” Denali responds immediately. “Why are you saying all of this?”
“We may have won one battle, but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t another waiting,” I say quietly. “And your daughter may be the reason for it.”
I knew that I was being pretty damn vague in what I was saying, but after the way Rosco treated me, I wasn’t much inclined to share with him what I knew. Honestly, with his temper and his distrust of me, I didn’t even expect him to believe me if I told him, and if he did, there was a good chance that he would think I was behind it.
“Hey, brother-in-law?” I call, drawing Rosco’s attention to me. “When is my trial?”
“A week from now,” he responds, giving me a look of confusion. “Why are you asking?”
“Because I need to start that training sooner than later,” I shrug, grabbing William’s arm and pulling him to his feet. “Can you lead me back to my cell now, handsome?” I ask him as his gaze meets mine. “I’m pretty tired after so much fun.”
“William!” Rosco growls when we begin to move. “I wasn’t finished talking to her.”
“I think it’s best that you focus on Denali and Serenity for now,” William counters. “Tension is too high at the moment for anyone to have a reasonable conversation.”
At his words, I shoot Rosco a look, and when he gives me a look of annoyance, I give him a wink.
“At least someone knows how to act like an adult.” I giggle, wrapping my arms around William’s. “Lead the way, handsome.”
[William’s POV]I don’t fight Elise as she begins to lead me away from my brooding cousin. While we move, I can feel his gaze burning into my back and know that when I return later, I’m going to have to deal with his wrath, but given the tense atmosphere between the two earlier, this was for the best in the end.“Thanks for playing along,” Elise sighs once we are out of earshot. “Sorry for using you.”As she speaks, she untangles her arms, but before she can fully release me, I reach out and grab her hand and hold it in place.“Are you just going to use me and throw me away?” I ask. “You and that sister of yours truly are the same.”“The same.” Elise repeats, her voice dripping with venom. “Then why was one of us kept and the other thrown away?”At her words, I feel my heart squeeze with sympathy."Unfortunately, I’m not the one that can answer that,” I admit, knowing this wasn’t the answer she wanted. “You should go straight to the source.”“Mmmm.”Tugging herself free, Elise wraps h
[William’s POV]I climb into my car and pull out my phone, checking my messages from the day, and am shocked to find a number that I don’t recognize. Frowning, I click on it and then feel my eyes widen as I take in the message on the screen.Meet me at the old pub on Burben Street. There is neither a name attached nor an explanation as to what it was that the sender wanted. Reading it again, I wonder whether or not I should actually go, and when curiosity weighs out caution, I rev my car to life and begin to drive. When I arrive at my destination, I move slowly while extending my senses. Since there was no specific place to meet, I couldn’t let down my guard. As I move, I let my eyes scan the area, and when I enter and the overpowering scent of cigarettes and alcohol attacks my nose, I realize why I was asked to meet here. Of course, this would be the perfect place since I couldn’t utilize all my senses.Going on alert, I move slowly until my phone goes off again.Booth in the back co
[Rosco's POV]I lead my mother out of the pack house and toward her waiting car. After my blowup earlier in the night, the atmosphere between us was tense, and I knew that she was most likely wanting to ask what exactly happened but also didn't want to pry. When we reach her car, she turns and takes me in with sad eyes.“Your father would fall in love at first sight with Serenity.” She says, her voice quiet as she treads dangerous waters. “You should really...”“What?” I ask, trying to keep my temper in check. It was her fault that my father and I were currently like this, and there wasn't any reason for me to take anything out on her. “Give him a call when he hasn't bothered calling.”“You know him,” she tries now, but stops as I let out a growl of warning.“He shouldn't put you up to trying to guilt me.” I hiss through gritted teeth. “And I have no intention to apologize. He was the one who made the decision to remove me from the pack due to false allegations against my mate. He is
[Elise's POV]“ELISE!”Rosco's booming voice startles me from a light doze, ruining any semblance of sleep I may have gotten after shifting around for hours to get comfortable.Grumbling, I begin to move again, searching for the perfect spot so I can take a cat nap before breakfast is served.“Elise!” He repeats, finally reaching my cell.“Sorry, Elise isn't home right now; please state your business and then go away.”“Don't you dare fucking play with me right now.” Rosco growls, grabbing my bars and making them groan. “You better fucking answer what I'm about to ask you.”“Is that how you speak to a woman?” I ask, prying one eye open to look at his rage-filled face.“I would hardly say you're a woman.”“Really?” I giggle, opening my other eye and getting to my feet. “Would you like to see whether or not I am?”As I speak, I move forward, and when I'm inches away from Rosco, I hook my fingers in my pants, preparing to remove them.“Make one more move, and I'll fucking kill you.” He w
[Denali’s POV]I cradle Serenity, my eyes fixed on the mark on her wrist. The more I look at it, the more it looks like a serpent, and I can’t help but wonder if this was some sort of mark of doom. Although I know I shouldn’t work myself up until we absolutely know what it is, I can’t stop the sense of foreboding I feel.Lately, things were just going too well for Rosco and me. Even when we had a trial looming over us for my father, Beatrice, and even Elise, we finally had peace. Well, for the most part, there were occasional attempts at ruin from Harold due to Nadia’s sudden death.Sighing, I try to process the complicated feelings that begin to bubble up in me from knowing that she won’t be around anymore to scheme and put me in harm's way. Although I was relieved, I was also saddened by the death of someone so young.“That was a mighty big sigh.”Lifting my gaze, I look in the direction of the voice and watch as Rosco makes his way toward me. His earlier look of panic is now gone,
[Denali’s POV]I swallow hard while I’m led down a long hall that is lined with metal doors. This was the place where the worst criminals to be arrested were kept so that they couldn’t attempt to escape, and at the very end of this hall was where my father was being kept. With each step, my heart kicks up in speed, even though I know that there is no way he could hurt me. I guess all those years of abuse and suffering were still rooted deep within me, and anytime I laid eyes on the man, I expected to go back to that time.“We’re here, Luna,” Jeffery, the one responsible for guarding these criminals, announces. “Are you sure you want to go in?”“Yeah,” I respond, taking a calming breath. “Thank you for your concern.”Nodding, Jeffery digs in his pocket and pulls out a keycard, then presses it against the lock on my father’s door.Stepping back, he waits as the metal slides to the side, revealing bars, and once those bars begin to lift, my father’s head lifts and his dark gaze comes to
[Rosco’s POV]My eyes grow wide as I watch Denali collapse on the ground while blood explodes from her mouth. Fuck! I should have known that she would do whatever it took to get answers from her father.‘Help her!’ Fabian whimpers. ‘You shouldn’t have let her go alone!’‘You don’t have to tell me that!’Surging forward, I gather Denali into my arms and then shoot a glare in Roger’s direction as he watches on in amusement.“It seems she is still the same pathetically weak omega she has always been.”A low growl of warning escapes me as I fight the urge to slit the bastard's throat. Not now. Not yet, when a more severe punishment was waiting for him. Soon, he wouldn't be so cocky, and I looked forward to seeing him get every fucking bit of karma he deserved.Fighting my very instincts, I slowly stand with Denali in my arms and then turn to leave.“Enjoy the time the two of you have left!” Roger calls from behind me. “Because once things are in motion, your end will come.”“I don’t know
[Rosco’s POV]“Will you keep an eye on Denali?”I turn to my mother, taking in her look of confusion and worry. When I was finished with Manny, I would need to tell her what was happening. I knew that in the end she would be worried, but this involved not only me and Denali but also her grandchild.“Of course.” She responds immediately. “Please, go ahead with what it is you need to do.”Nodding, I motion for Manny to move, and when he does, I start to follow. As we move, Manny doesn’t speak, but from the way he is carrying himself, I know that he is uncomfortable, and that doesn’t help with the fear I’m trying to keep at bay for my wife and daughter.“Please, go in.” He announces when we reach our destination, a small room with books lining the wall and a single desk. “We won’t be heard here since the walls are soundproof.”“Is what you’re going to tell me that bad?” I ask, feeling my anxiety spike.Instead of responding, Manny lifts a finger to his lips and nods toward the interior o
