Mariana Rosette couldn't forget the gray eyes that she had encountered in the woods.
Even as the iron gates of her aunt's courtyard came into view. Even as she examined the elegantly constructed mansion in which her aunt resides. Even as the horses came to a stop and she dismounted Calliope, the thought of those intriguing gray eyes never left her head."We're here Lady Mariana," Quin announced behind her.Mariana nodded and threw another scrutinizing stare at the mansion. It was still the way she remembered it when she visited as a child. It stood on its own in its magnificence. It had a rich mixture of expensive and exotic woods from the best parts of the world as well as bricks that decorated some parts of the wall. The house was the family home of the Romans, her mother's home. The Romans never had a male child and with Mariana's mother dead, every riches that they had was inherited by her aunt, Lydia Roman.Lydia was the same person who had become Mariana's new guardian as her late father also had no relatives. She had no one else in the world except her aunt. Mariana didn't like the feeling of being at the mercy of her aunt. She kept feeling as if Lydia had a shocking surprise in store for her.Lydia had never always been a nice and loving aunt. She was more of a dangerous and strict aunt who didn't like being crossed. The few people who Mariana remembered to have crossed Lydia, Mariana never saw again. Only the gods knew what Lydia did to them. She hated to be on bad terms with her aunt but the nagging feeling at the depth of her stomach kept telling her that what she feared was near.Mariana looked around the courtyard. There was a circular spot in the center of the courtyard which was occupied with colorful flowers. She remembered the stables were to the left side of the building."We should proceed inside the house," Martins suggested."What about the horses?" Mariana inquired while patting Calliope. As if on cue, a young boy who couldn't have been over thirteen emerged from the left side of the building. He wore dark shorts, a white shirt and a dark coat over the shirt. He had white socks on which were coupled with dark shoes. His hair was dark and ruffled. His skin looked very pale with freckles on his cheeks. Yet his big smile looked so warming."Greetings milady. I'm Jasper and I'll be taking care of your horses," He introduced himself."Ah, I was about to tell you about Jasper. Your horse is safe with him," Quin commented.Mariana wanted to protest but the warm smile coming from Jasper was enough for her to give up the idea. She turned to Calliope."Be good to Jasper. Don't make him get worked up," Mariana told her horse while scratching its hair. It snorted in reply.Jasper approached Calliope and outstretched an arm at the horse. When he opened it, there were three cubes of sugar in it. He said nothing. Calliope stared back at Jasper as if contemplating whether to trust him or not. In the end, Calliope gave up and started to eat the sugar on his palm. Jasper broke into a peal of triumphant laughter."That's a good girl," He said and brought his other hand to caress her hair."I see she has chosen to trust you," Mariana finally said after watching the entire thing."Horses love me. What's her name?" He asked."Calliope," Mariana answered.Jasper beamed with excitement. "That's a very powerful name for a horse. Aren't you a beautiful horse?" He said to Calliope and the horse whinnied at him.Mariana smiled. Her horse was in safe hands. She turned to the men. "Shall we?" They nodded and led the way into the house.Inside, the house was just as beautiful. The sitting area was arranged before the fire to keep it cozy and warm. It was situated on the right side of the entrance. The Grand stairway was right opposite the entrance.Four women were waiting in the sitting area for them. It was obvious that the other three women were maids from the way they were dressed. They wore simple kirtles of dull colors and aprons around their waists while the last woman was elegantly dressed in an exotic blue dress which had many layers.Lydia Roman didn't seem to have aged a day since the last time Mariana saw her. That was ten years ago. Lydia was tall and she had sharp features. Starting from her cheekbones to her jawline. Her eyes were bright green orbs that could pierce into somebody's soul who stared too much. Her dark hair was tied up in an updo befitting a queen. Mariana couldn't help but feel as if her aunt was overly dressed. Perhaps, she was attending a ball today. The other maids were short and cowered under Lydia's command. Only the gods knew what she could have done to them. The oldest looked maid was chubby and had brown hair which was tied into a low bun. The others were young, they could have been around Mariana's age. She couldn't tell. One had blond hair while the other had dark hair like Lydia's. They all tied their hair into low buns just like the oldest maid.Mariana and her escorts finally approached Lydia and her maids."Welcome dear child. I trust the trip wasn't too rough. You should have been here since yesterday but due to today's event, I'll overlook it. We're receiving powerful visitors," Lydia Roman began without stopping for a breath. Her accent carried her wealthy roots."I couldn't care less about your visitors. Will you show me to my room so that I can have a good rest?" Mariana asked. The maids seemed shocked by her reply but they didn't show it."Quin, Martins, you may go now. Your services aren't needed right away," Lydia said while dismissing the butlers. Then she turned to the maids. "Cassandra and Sarah, go back into the kitchen to make sure the preparations are in check and nothing has gone wrong. Nothing must," Lydia ordered. The chubby maid and the blond-haired maid nodded and walked towards the kitchen which was behind the grand stairway."Leandra, you follow us to my niece's room. You're going to help her get ready for the visitors," Lydia instructed as she turned towards the grand stairway.Mariana gave her aunt a questioning glare. "I don't understand. Why do I have to get ready?"Leandra followed her mistress quietly without saying a word. Which left Mariana with no choice but to follow closely behind. They mounted the stairway. It came to an end before a corridor. Lydia led the way until she came before a room at the far end of the corridor. It was on the left side of the house. On the same side as the stables.Lydia pushed the door open and allowed the two women following her to walk in. Mariana saw that the room had already been prepared for her. The draperies were blue like the sky. The bed covers were the same. The walls were painted white like snow. The bed was beside one of the windows and the dresser was on the other side. A wardrobe that led into the washroom was at the foot of the bed."It's important for you to get ready because Prince Leonard Luther is coming to see you so that he would make the final decision of either accepting you or rejecting you as his bride-to-be," Lydia broke the news.Mariana froze as she stared at her aunt. Her mouth came open in shock. She searched her aunt's face for any sign of a joke or laughter. It was only seriousness she found."You can't be serious Aunt," Mariana scoffed."We don't have all day. The prince will be here any moment from now. You need to get dressed and be on your best behavior," Lydia instructed. It was at this point that Mariana realized her aunt wasn't bluffing. She was telling the truth. Rage started to boil within her. When had her aunt arranged all this? Didn't Lydia even think to involve her in something as grand as her own wedding? Besides, she never remembered saying she wanted to get married!"Aunt Lydia, I don't remember having a certain conversation with you where I told you that I was desperately in need of a husband and that I would be so glad if you came to my aid and arranged my marriage!" Mariana exclaimed.Leandra gasped but she made sure to remain quiet. Lydia stared at her niece in shock and for a moment considered murdering her."Leave us!" Lydia instructed Leandra. The maid without any word hurried out of the room. Lydia let out a heavy sigh. She was trying hard not to lose her temper and lash out at her niece."Dear child. You're right, you never had such a conversation with me but your aunt knows best and I only want what is best for you. Prince Leonard Luther is the heir to the throne of Asgaria. If he accepts your hand in marriage then you tend to become the future Queen of this kingdom. Your future will be secured with the amount of power that you will wield. No one will dare to harm or disrespect you. Do you even realize the gravity of that?" Lydia explained to her niece. The last thing she wanted was for her niece to ruin what she tried so hard to build."Aunt Lydia, I don't want to get married. If I ever marry, then I want it to be of my own accord. I want to marry for love. I want to be the one to choose my own husband. I certainly do not want to marry the prince of this place. I'll be caged, trapped in one place. I won't have the freedom that I have yearned to have. I refuse to get married!" Mariana protested."Are you foolish, child? There is no such thing as love! All that is a stupid fairy tale told to silly girls like you. The prince is coming and you will meet him. Remember! You're under my roof. You have to work to keep your place!" Lydia exclaimed as she was already beginning to lose her temper.Mariana gasped at her aunt's harsh words. "I'm beginning to think it's your future you're trying so hard to secure here!" Mariana retorted. This hit a nerve in her aunt. Lydia threw her niece the harshest glare and swiftly grabbed her niece by the cheek as she squeezed hard.Mariana still shocked by her aunt's behavior tried to blink back the hot tears that threatened to flow out due to the stinging pain that her aunt was inflicting on her."I'm sure you've heard that people don't cross me," Lydia reminded her and her green eyes became so dangerous. "What is the name of your horse again? Ah, yes, Calliope. It will be really devastating if some bad misfortune were to befall the poor horse. It's up to you though, if the horse will remain safe or not," Lydia finished and released Mariana.Mariana stared back at her aunt in shock. She had never once thought that her aunt could stoop this low. Her heart thumped violently against her chest. Her body began to tremble."Leandra will be here shortly to help you dress," Lydia announced and walked out of the room. The tears which had been wanting to fall out the entire time came streaming down her cheeks. She wiped the tears angrily away. She hadn't seen this coming. What had she gotten herself into? Had she known about this then she would have never come here. She would have fled and gone to find herself a home elsewhere. Now Calliope was in danger and she knew well that her aunt was capable of hurting the animal. She was hopeless but she couldn't just accept defeat. She would meet the prince today, she would go along with her aunt's plan. But she will secretly think up a way to break away from the marriage without hurting anyone. She will be fine. There was confusion on his mind as he strolled through the castle corridors. He had tried to get her off his mind. He had tried to forget the incident but no matter what he did, her flawless skin kept coming back to his mind.Lucius made a right turn and spotted the stone stairway that he was about to ascend. Some maids passed by him and giggled suddenly. He chose to ignore them. His mind suddenly took him back to the forest. The only reason why he had been there in the first place was that he had been tracking down one of the beasts that had been terrorizing Asgaria. He had heard of the beast's stories in the pubs and inns that he visited. There had been people turning up missing or dead. The threat had become too much that even before Prince Leonard brought up the matter to him, he had already taken it upon himself to go hunting for it.He subconsciously brought his left hand to the scar on the left side of his face. When he realized what he was doing, he dropped his hand to his sid
Mariana's eyes were squeezed shut."What is the name of your horse again? Ah, yes, Calliope. It will be really devastating if some bad misfortune were to befall the poor horse. It's up to you though, if the horse will remain safe or not," Lydia's threat came back to Mariana's thought. It still baffled Mariana that her aunt had dared to threaten her. All this was happening because she was an orphan now. It was happening because those beasts had murdered her parents that day. If her parents had still been alive, then she would have been in the safety of her room, not bothered at all about some rich and spoilt prince that whom her aunt had arranged a marriage for her."I am done my Lady," Leandra whispered. This caused Mariana's eyes to fly open. She had totally forgotten that Leandra was in the room with her. She had forgotten that Leandra had been dressing her hair. She had zoned out to another episode of her many thoughts.Mariana stared at herself in the mirror. She looked different.
“We have a lot to discuss, let's talk over breakfast," Lydia said as she ushered the prince to the dining area. There was tension in the air, something needed to be done or said to liven the mood her niece has just managed to ruin."That is a good idea," Leonard agreed and he followed Lydia to the dining room.It was like a mini feast. He had heard that Lydia also knew how to play a good host but he had not known to what extent. She really was good at it."Please, do sit here," she gestured and the both men took their seats.Lydia turned to Sarah, Leandra and Cassandra who had been waiting in the room for them. She gave them a small nod and they began serving the Prince.Mariana who had been ignored was about to leave when her aunt gave her a haughty look."Mariana dear, why not serve the prince? I'm sure you could use some practice on being a proper lady because I can tell you've barely had one, a flaw on my sister's part I must say," Lydia said sternly.Mariana almost gritted her tee
He stalked through the woods. He was as quiet as ever. He scuffled his feet softly on the the ground. He moved like there weren't thorns in the woods. He listened for any other sound that was unnatural in the forest. He strained his hear for sound. Any sound at all. Lucius felt close to the beast. He had this gut feeling that he was close to taming it. There was a thick fog around him, because it was barely dawn. His cloak gave him some form of cover and the fog hid him well. All of a sudden, he heard a twig snap behind him. He whipped his head to the back immediately to see what it was. It was pointless, his vision was hazy. The forest immediately grew quiet. His heart began race. The hair at his back rose. He felt like he was been watched. Like a prey hiding from its predator. Another twig broke, this time, he didn't bother checking to see what it was. He swiftly moved away from the spot he had been. He felt a presence around him. He couldn't shake the feeling of danger. From
Mariana Rosette rode her horse in silence as she neared home. Myriads of thoughts ran through her mind. She was thinking of Lucius' gray eyes, his firm grip and deep husky voice. She was thinking about the beasts he described. Had this same beasts followed her all the way here? Was the world not safe anymore? Where had these beasts been this entire time? Why had they come up now? Why were they attacking and terrorising humans now? What did they hope to gain? Mariana rode into the courtyard. She dismounted her horse. "You did good today Calliope," She patted the animal. Calliope whinnied in response. Mariana led Calliope to the stables. She reached the entrance and met Jasper at the doorway looking worried. When he spotted Calliope, he breathed a sigh of relief. "For a moment, I thought I had lost your horse. You could have informed me that you were going to ride her. I would have prepared Calliope for you myself," Jasper began. Mariana shrugged. "It's nothing. She's all yours no
Lucius could not take his eyes off Mariana. He felt something deep within him fighting to be unleashed and run to Mariana. He wanted to grab her badly and pull her into his arms. He wanted to plant kisses on her neck. He wanted to plant kisses all over her delicate body. He tore his gaze away from her burning brown eyes. She wasn't his. She was the prince's. It was treason to think about the prince's woman in this way. He could be killed for it. It was dangerous to have her on his mind. But it was hard to not think of her. Her lip curled into a sensual smile. She was aware of her charm. Her lashes framed eyes twinkled. Of all the guards at his disposal, it had to be him the Prince chose to fetch Mariana. He didn't know whether or not to be grateful for that. All he knew was that it would a long torturous ride. He was jolted out of his thoughts her aunt's voice "Escort her safely to the Prince," she ordered She shot her niece one last warning look before she retreated back inside.
Leonard Luther stirred in his bed. The previous day had been tedious but he thought it worth it as he was able to set eyes on his betrothed. Her beauty kept him in awe. She was like nothing like the women he had bedded in the past. He wondered what it would feel like to have her beneath him. On his bed and in his arms. His eyes flew open and he sat up. A new plaything laid beside him. She hadn't satisfied him as much as he had imagined she would. She was one of the new maids that were assigned to his wing of the palace. He took in her details, her back turned to him. Her ivory smooth skin was translucent. Blond mane sprawled across his pillow. She was pretty. Just not as pretty as that one woman on his mind. "My Prince, you're awake," The maiden said as she rubbed her eyes groggily. She flipped her seductively, in a way that it exposed her creamy mounds. She had long lashes and she never missed a chance to flutter around. Her green eyes stared at the Prince's icy blue eyes hoping
Lucius watched Mariana as she slept. The fire illuminated her features, giving her a golden hue. He had wrapped her in a bandage with a piece of cloth he tore from his cloak. The only injury she sustained was on her left temple. The warmth from the fire must have made her feel better. She no longer looked pale. He had spent the entire afternoon with Mariana on his back, walking deeper into the forest other than going back to the palace because he was sure that if he continued on that quest, they would wind up dead. Lucius wondered what was truly going on in Asgaria. The place had been safe for travel. It had been a very peaceful place. All of a sudden, huge wolves were terrorising Asgaria. Who and what could they possibly be after? He wondered if the King knew of the recent occurrences. He watched the fire cackle. Despite the intensity it was burning with, he still didn't feel warm enough. His teeth was chattering with cold. He had covered Mariana with his cloak instead. Her legs we
In the silence of his room, Leonard pondered over the events that had happened hours before, even though seemed to him that it happened a lifetime ago. It had happened so fast. One minute he was trying to subdue Mariana and the next his most trusted and loyal guard appeared in a dangerous stance, ready to pounce on him with looks that shot daggers. Lucius had been loyal to him all his life. He rarely questioned his orders. He had little or no history. All that he could remember of his lineage was that he was a fareaway kingdom that hadn't survived the crises of their neighbouring kingdom. He had been taken as a prisoner and had been brought to Asgaria to serve the prince which happened to to be him.Leonard had never imagined that a day would come where Lucius would disobey his orders, much less stand up to him and stare into his eye with unmasked fury. His eyes had gleamed differently and there was something unmistakably dangerous in those depths. For all that he knew, Lucius had
Rays of sunlight cast along the forest leaving a golden hue. As the dawn unfolded, the air still kissed by the night's cool embrace stirred with the promise of a new day. As if aware of the lovers that lay half naked on the floor, the ambient rustle of leaves and the distant singsong sound of the birds a distant melody.Lucius was awake with his elbow propped against his chin. He stared intently at Marianna and he felt his heart ache with love for her. It was impossible to love someone that much. His emotions were in disarray. A mass of contradictions. Love and fear. But majorly love. He was crazily in love with the beautiful woman that lay passion tousled beside him.She was his elixir.A drug he didn't think he'd get enough of. An addiction he didn't want to be free of. She was his redemption. As much as she belonged to another, he had to admit that he had longed stopped seeing her that way. But there this daunting feeling of fear that was eating at him. A residue of their long-live
The horses tied to the carriage trudged through the forest at first, then when what seemed like shelter slowly came to view, Thorax tightened it's reins and urged it to go faster. It's gallops in sync with their incessant heart beats. When they got closer, they came to a halt and tied it to a tree, he stayed behind, looking after the horse and carriage.King Pius nodded at him, and went further with his son, in search of the unknown. What should have been a castle with high walls had become a dilapidated shed concealed by the twisted limbs of ancient trees forgotten with time. The air around this dwelling was thick with an ominous aura. They ventured into the abode. They were met with creatures assumed to be werewolves. They roamed the abode with fluidity and ethereal grace. Each one looking more dangerous that the other. Their fur clung with their bodies each strand pulsating with energy. Their claws honed to perfection with their eyes gleaming under the lunar spell.Their snout re
It had been eight nights and Pius had heard nothing from neither Fabien nor Cyprus. He suspected that the secret army he had mobilized in search of them would report to him any moment. He still couldn't shake of the feeling that something had gone terribly wrong. The feeling had always been there, only this time, it ate at him more disturbingly. He took a long look around his secret chamber, and mused at himself. He wondered what it would really take to feel like he truly belonged there. He poured his tea and took a long sip, wincing as it burned down his throat. A necessary feeling. He heard a knock. No one knew of his secret chamber except his son and his most trusted soldier. Thorax. The commander of his secret army. His guess was the latter and he desperately hoped he brought good news. He cleared his throat. "Come on in," he ordered.Thorax ushered himself in while bowing to his king, his face grim. " Your Grace, I'm afraid things have taken a wrong turn."His anger building ,
Mariana couldn't shake the foreboding sense of unease. She didn't know whether to attribute it to the fact that she wasn't home in her room or because she hadn't seen or heard from Lucius ever since the incident. She wondered if he thought about her as much as she did him. She paced around the room for the upteenth time. She was restless. She didn't like the feeling of being trapped. She had mentally counted four days. Four days since she had seen the light of the day. Four days since she last saw Lucius. She didn't think she could take it any longer. Several attempts to leave the room had been futile. She was met with stoic unpleasant guards who only gave her one worded answers. The longest they said was that she couldn't leave the room and that orders were from their majesty. How she longed to leave the room. How she longed to see Lucius. "Lucius...", his name rolled of her tongue in a soft whisper. Like a caress. She gave a long look at her supposed room, her gaze fell on Monalis
King Pius Luther was in his chambers as he pondered on the events that had being happening in Asgaria. The werewolves were back again even after he thought he had bought them off. Even after he thought that the deal was over and done with. They were back again and they had not come alone. They came back with the one that threatened the throne the most. Was this perhaps a game that Rufus was playing on him? Could it be all part of the plan? At that instant, he regretted not ordering his kill. Rufus had become an Alpha, it would be much harder to get him killed. All King Luther's life, he had worked hard to secure the throne for his son, his bloodline. He was never in line of succession until his sister and her family mysteriously dropped dead, a tilt to his own edge. He seemed to think the world was favouring him until that roar erupted through the woods two days ago. A reminder of the sacrifices he had made in the past. They were no wrongdoings to him, merely things that needed to
Voices echoed in his head. Voices that he could not determine if they were from the past or present he squinted through the sharp rays of light. He felt a sharp pain in his head as he struggled to keep his eyelids apart. "Luther! Run!" A feminine voice screamed. The voice sounded so familiar like he knew it so well. On close inspection, he realized that it was his mother's voice. The voices came back, he could tell that he was about to do as he was told when a roar resonated throughout the entire place. It vibrated the walls and carried fear with it. He trembled at the power that came with it. Next, he heard screams. Roars erupted. A scream from his mother reached his ears again. All the voices collided as one as they came together. The echoes became too loud. Too unbearable for him. Then all the voices zeroed down to one deep all too familiar voice. "You can never take my place, never." Lucius gasped awake. He sat up immediately and stared around the room that he was placed in.
Was heaven usually this loud or were wolves also in heaven? Loud growls rumbled and vibrated in the air. They sounded menacing and threatening. Mariana's eyes came awake. She had passed out and for whatever reason she was alive again. She realized her situation in that instant. She was alive and with Lucius. They were face to face with wolves again. Her heart thumped crazily. Lucius was scared that he might have lost Mariana. When he saw that she had awoken, he sighed a breath of relief and muttered silent thanks. They were faced with danger again. They seemed to attract danger. Or maybe danger was always there, it was about time they no longer ran away from it and life had chosen both of them to be its warriors. Wolves scared Mariana. They made her think of her tragedy. How she lost her parents to them and how she was in an unfortunate situation as a result of it. LuLucius who was still staring at them decided that it would be good if he made his move now. He stared at the three
Mariana Rosette couldn't stop staring at the man before her. He stood by the entrance of the small cave. They had found shelter in it and had hidden themselves from the rain. Every second she spent in his company, she was at risk of losing herself to him. Her eyes hungrily ran over his body. She wondered if he was aware that he sexually appealed her. He was all veins and muscles. Lucius had been carefully moulded into existence. It took all the control in her to not run to him and wrap her hands around him from behind. Mariana shut her eyes in ectasy as she remembered what went down the night before. She brought her hand to her lips, she couldn't have enough of him. She reddened at the thought of the passionate kiss they shared. She silently wished it had gone further than that. Rain droplets threatened to put off the flame. He had made the fire for them to keep them from getting cold but it didn't keep them warm enough. Lucius stared ahead at the pouring rain. He had to get Maria
