174-He Loves Playing Games

After staring at me blankly for a while, Theodore began walking toward Sawyer. It was the perfect opportunity to confront him--or at least to look into his eyes and gauge whether he felt any shame for his cowardice.

I quickly moved toward Sawyer, reaching him before Theodore could. The council members scattered, giving us space.

“Missing me already?” Sawyer joked, until his gaze landed on the approaching man. The seriousness in his expression didn’t affect me. He knew the circumstances under which I married him; he shouldn’t expect me to be all joyful and clingy.

“Sheriff Theodore!” Sawyer stepped forward to greet him.

“Congratulations, Your Highness. I heard from the pack members about your mating ceremony,” Theodore said, avoiding eye contact with me. His voice hinted at pain, though it was unclear why.

“You weren’t in the pack, so we didn’t want to bother you. Besides, everything happened so quickly,” Sawyer said, wrapping his arm around my back and pulling me closer. Theo
