Chapter 81

Chase’s POV

I left for the Franchez’s home with dread curled tightly in my gut. Death of a loved one was hardly ever expected and the tragedy of it was always difficult to come to terms with. Sadly, I spoke from experience.

Being the bearer of this bad news was just as horrible. It wasn’t my first time though. When you had power and people under you who followed your commands, you were bound to lose a few.

The few times when unrest grew to battles, I lost warriors on the frontline, though thanks to smart strategizing which brought the battles to a quick end, they were few and far apart.

I always offered my condolences to their family personally and compensated them in the best way I could. I wasn’t a complete monster.

Regardless, breaking the news was difficult each time and this case was worse because Theo hadn’t died fighting. No. She had been murdered in cold blood.

As I ran, my mind wandered and I didn’t realize that I had changed course until I slowed down. Around me, trees loome
