“Chase?”
I stared in stupor at the Alpha who had kissed then refused me in one breath. No longer was he the put-together, stoic Lycan that emanated power, instead, he looked adorably rumbled and reeked strongly of alcohol.
The bottle of liquor in Chase’s hand fell to the ground and shattered as he looked up suddenly and saw me.
“What are you doing here?” He groaned miserably, his eyes darted from me to the shards of glass at his feet.
I was too stunned by the sight of him to reply or be offended by his question.
He slumped against the refrigerator and began the slide to the ground, that was when I snapped back and rushed to his side to stop him from sitting on the broken glass.
“How much did you drink to end up in such a pitiful state?” I grunted, no longer intimated by the staggering Alpha as I hefted him up and away from the mess he had made.
“You shouldn’t be here.” Chase slurred. “Why are you still here?”
“Alpha Chase, are you whining right now?” Amused, I manoeuvred us up the stairs, panting under his weight.
In that moment with his arm around my shoulder and his weight pressed against me, I could forget his hurtful words. I could forget he was my mate who wanted nothing to do with him.
As though sensing my train of thoughts, he turned to me and buried his head in the crook of my neck. I stilled at the sudden contact while my heart thundered.
Delicious tingles ran down my spine as Chase buried his nose into my hair and brought his arms fully around to enclose me in a hug.
“You smell so good.” He whispered. They were almost the same words Kylan had used yet Chase’s words sounded more distant and sad than flirtatious. There was no way I could compare the two Alphas, Kylan did not stand a chance against the mysterious shifter in my arms.
I started to move but he shook his head against my neck and laughed humourlessly.
He continued almost like he was thinking out loud. “You’re beautiful, absolutely breathtaking.” My breath caught. “And I can’t have you. You’re everything I dreamed you would be but I just can’t fucking have you. Isn’t life such a bitch, Maya?
His question trailed off into silence and we stood there, wrapped in an embrace in the quiet darkness of the pack house.
It broke my heart that I was seeing a different part of Chase but instead of bringing me clarity, his words raised more questions.
“Why can’t you have me though?” I asked, I wanted answers.
No, I needed them.
“Why Chase?” I repeated louder.
The only thing I got in response was a snore. My complicated mate had fallen asleep on my shoulder once again leaving me without explanations.
With a deep sigh, I adjusted my grip on him and moved us out of the hallway and into my room.
“What does he even freaking eat?!” I gritted out and dumped him on my bed. His massive frame made my queen-sized bed look like a child’s bed.
I took off his shoes and drew the covers over him. Bent over, I gave into the temptation and brushed his hair away from his face.
Chase’s face was sculpted to perfection and there was no denying it. Everything from his dark brows to his strong cheekbones had me mesmerised. Unable to stop myself, I reached out to trace his plump lips but quickly snatched my hand back when he stirred.
Fanning my flaming cheeks, I went back to the kitchen and chugged down water in hopes that it would calm my racing heart. It didn’t.
There was no way I could ignore my attraction to him and I didn’t even want to. I decided then that first thing in the morning, I would ask him why he was so bent on pushing me away.
Exhaustion was an understatement for how I felt as I tiredly swept up the glass shards and tossed them before returning upstairs.
I considered sleeping on the couch downstairs but the thought of waking up to random strangers around me gave me chills. The only other options that remained were the bed, the floor and the armchair, and the latter two were too uncomfortable, to say the least. I chose the bed and lay as far away from Chase as I could get without falling off.
Enveloped in his scent, I dozed off not realising that during the night, I had rolled into the arms of the very he-wolf who had demanded that I never touch him again.
When I woke up, Chase was long gone and the sheets were cold. A small smile played on my lips, however, when I inhaled the soothing hint of forest rain that lingered in my room. Without his scent, I could have easily convinced myself that it was all a dream. A very lovely yet confusing one.My stomach flipped at the thought of his reaction to waking up in the same bed with me. I hurriedly got dressed and went downstairs, hoping that I could corner him for answers before he disappeared again.Last night had brought about a strong desire the know who Chase was beneath all that coldness. As I approached the kitchen, bits of Ron and Chase’s conversation floated out, piquing my interest.“It could have been them.”“I can feel it in my gut, they w—" Chase’s words broke and in the quiet that ensued, I knew they had sensed my presence.Stepping into the kitchen, I offered them an awkward smile, “Hi!”Chase scowled but I didn’t blame him, my false enthusiasm sounded grating even to my ears.“W
“My sister is dead and it’s all my fault.”My heart sunk.“What?” I whispered, shock beating a steady drum in my veins. The butterflies in my stomach completely died at his words.Chase drew in a shaky breath that echoed in the suffocating silence.“Two years ago, I...I lost my little sister in a rogue ambush and it was my fault. I wasn’t there and she was attacked because of me...” His glassy stare was fixed at a point over my shoulder, lost in a distant memory. A memory that obviously still haunted him.“Because of you?” I drew out the question. My palms felt clammy where they gripped the counter top. All he was giving me were vague statements and my mind worked overtime trying to fill in the blanks.A bit louder, I asked again, “What do you mean it was because of you?”Chase broke out of his trance and reared away from me. Hurt began to bloom but I squashed it out quickly, my feelings were inconsequential at the moment.“How else?” He asked with a dry chuckle that was completely de
How laughable. One got himself engaged while the other was already betrothed.“Miriam, what are you doing here?” Chase growled. His gaze returned to mine and did not stray as he addressed the so called Miriam. She bounced over to Chase and clutched his arm, leaning heavily into him with her annoyingly full chest. My eyes flicked from her hold to Chase’s face, silently begging him to shake her off. He did not.“I’m here to see you, silly.” She giggled, batting long lashes up at Chase.I blinked. Her existence felt like a thorn in my side.“And who is this?” She asked, scanning me from head to toes with barely concealed distaste.I scoffed and shook my head, disappointment in Chase. I did not know how to process the fact that he was actually betrothed and his silence brought me no ease.I needed to be as far away from him as possible. My eyes pricked and my cheeks burned but I would be damned if I gave them the satisfaction of a reaction.Sticking out my chin with as much dignity as I c
“Come on down for dinner, princess, no more room service.” Henry joked from the other side of my closed door. After rapping the oak surface twice, his footsteps receded with his retreat.I felt sick in my stomach.I still had not properly met the members of Drakor that lived here at the pack house and sitting through dinner with them sounded like a punishment. However, it was a punishment that I rightly deserved for being awful to Chase and if I could get a chance to apologize after dinner, that would make it worth it.With that consolation, I patted down the flyaways from my ponytail and left the comfort of my room.I walked into the bustling room and it might have been my imagination but eyes seemed to follow me as I made my way to where Ron and Henry.I fisted my hands as I walked, hating the fact that I felt like an outsider. When I reached familiar faces, I sat down in the chair that Ron pulled out for me and returned Henry’s encouraging smile with a small one of my own.“Ah! Loo
Chase’s POVMy jaw worked as I stepped into the pack house, rage boiling in my veins. My patience with Kylan Greene was wearing thin and when it finally snapped, nothing would be able to save that scum of an Alpha.I passed Miriam in the hallway and my already surly mood soured further.“Why are you still here?” I asked, hoping to goddess that my tone did not sound as short as my current temper. My former betrothed rolled her eyes, “Am I not allowed to come here now that you’ve so conveniently called off our arrangement?”My wolf growled at her insolence but I had no time for Miriam’s spoilt nuances.“I told you to go home, Miriam. I don’t appreciate you making my mate uncomfortable.”She was the only person whom I had told about Maya being my true mate. I had explained that it was the reason why we no longer needed to mate and I had expected her to understand.Unfortunately, I had overestimated her level of maturity.Miriam sneered, “Seriously, Chase? You think that mute mutt is fit
I blinked at Chase.OnceTwice.Then a scream tore from my throat and I scrambled for a towel, slipping and tripping over myself.Chase’s hands flew to his face, covering his eyes.“Shit! Maya, I’m so sorry! I panicked when—”“Not the time for a bloody explanation, Chase!” I yelled, securing the towel tightly around my chest.“Right. But I’m sorry—“Oh, goddess.” I cried, flustered. “I get it, please just leave!”“Yes, of course. Shit, sorry.”I stood in the bathroom holding on tight to my towel long after Chase left whilst mumbling apologies. To say I was rattled was an understatement.Back in my room, I changed into my pyjamas while replaying the scene over and over in my head. I flushed as I recalled the way his pupils had dilated as he got an eyeful of my body.I slipped under the duvet wondering if I should go find him and ask why he had entered my room in the first place. No, I was still too flustered to be in the same room with him at the moment. So I made up my mind to ask him
Chase’s kiss was ecstasy. He nipped my bottom lip and took advantage of my gasp to deepen our kiss, dominating every inch of my mouth.Chase let go of my wrist and circled a possessive hand around my neck. Every nerve ending in my body flared to life as he grabbed my ass and lifted me so my feet were off the floor. I wrapped my legs around his waist and fisted my hand in his hair to tug him closer. My wolf whimpered, hungry for more. There were too many clothes between us.He placed me on his large desk and ground his hardness into me sending a jolt of electrified desire straight to my core and a breathy moan escaped my lipsChase groaned. “You like that, don’t you?”He traced his kisses down and paused, nipping gently at the side of my neck.“It is taking every fucking thing in me not to mark you right now. To finally claim you as mine.” He whispered against the side of my neck, his hands holding my hips firmly.“Then do it, I’m yours, claim me.” I pleaded. His eyes darkened with sur
“What?” I gasped.I had an out-of-body experience as I tried to comprehend the answer I had just received.“That can’t be...” I trailed off, wide eyed. Kylan was a greedy bastard but murder?Chase sighed and dropped is head into his hands. I reached out to comfort him but drew back my hand and turned to Ron.I took a deep breath and then said, “Tell me everything.”I needed to know everything if I wanted to share Chase’s pain. I needed to know the whole truth to be able to comfort my mate if that was even possible“Chase?” Ron looked at Chase with worry. “Do you want to tell her yourself?”A moment of silence passed between us then after releasing a laboured breath, Chase spoke, starting from where it had all begun.“My parents also died on the 11th blood moon but that was four years ago. It was a stupid, bloody attempt of a coup.”Something nagged at me at the mention of that date but I pushed it aside. This moment was for Chase.“Those spineless bastards coveted the Alpha title and
