Chapter 1225

Author: Summer's Blaze
The chamber doors creaked open, and Derek quickly called out, "His Majesty is departing!"

Lydia hurried inside, rushing to Kylie's side and helping her to her feet.

"Your Majesty, your hand is injured." Lydia gasped. She immediately pressed her handkerchief to the bleeding cut, then motioned for the maids to bring water and bandages.

Kylie sank into a chair, her body trembling as though her strength had left her entirely. Fear lingered in her wide eyes, and her voice was shaky with disbelief. "He said he would depose me. His Majesty said he would depose me."

"His Majesty is just angry for a moment. How could he really depose you? Don't worry."

Lydia sent the maids who had come to assist back out, then sighed as she looked at Kylie.

"Your Majesty, you shouldn't have said those things to the queen dowager. And as for Lady Ruth's situation, I advised you about it, but you didn't listen."

"I don't understand! What was my mistake?" Kylie's eyes burned with indignation. "It was just

"Kylie wasn't always this foolish," Victoria remarked as she rose from the dining table, moving to the carved cherrywood armchair. She was pleasantly full, and the chair's firm support felt just right. "She used to be quite clever. When a clever person suddenly becomes foolish, it's often because they're too entangled in their own schemes. They can't see past their own interests. And for those interests, they think any sacrifice is justified, no matter who pays the price.""Mom, your words are absolutely correct," Salvador agreed, nodding.Victoria gestured for him to sit and then asked, "What are your thoughts on the current admissions policy for the women's academy?"Salvador replied thoughtfully, "I think it's a good idea. It gives the common folk the impression that they aren't so far removed from the nobility. It might even ease some of the discontent among them."He naturally spoke with the broader picture in mind. As for whether it offered women a chance to broaden their h

Once the investigation into the gentlemen's retreat was concluded, Carissa personally entered the palace to deliver her report. She was unaware that Kylie had lodged a complaint against her, intending only to report on the matter at hand before visiting Victoria. When Salvador heard that martial-trained Sandorian spies had been hiding within the gentlemen's retreat, he was visibly shocked. His expression immediately grew serious.Carissa refrained from mentioning Gerald's frequent visits to the gentlemen's retreat. The investigation had made it clear that Gerald's visits were purely for leisure, and he deliberately concealed his identity. Otherwise, he wouldn't have gone to such lengths to disguise himself in that ridiculous manner. From what she overheard, Gerald's conversations revolved solely around frivolities, with no mention of court affairs or suspicious behavior. Thus, there was no basis to suspect any breach of security.Claire, who had eavesdropped on the courtesans' pri

The Capital Guard headquarters' prison was as sparse as they came, and they didn't usually imprison people there. It wasn't that they didn't arrest anyone. Minor offenders were usually fined or given a few lashes, while those committing serious crimes were sent to the authorities to face proper sentencing."Your Majesty, if there are court officials present, should they also be detained?" Carissa asked.Salvador's expression darkened. "Naturally, they are to be detained as well."Carissa understood that Salvador intended to teach these officials a lesson, though not publicly—he didn't want word of their indiscretions spreading to the authorities. Locking them up in the Capital Guard headquarter's prison was meant to serve as a discreet warning while protecting their reputations.More importantly, the raid's true objective was to capture the Sandorian spies and subject them to a rigorous interrogation."And make sure no one warns them in advance," Salvador added. It was time to d

Inside, heavy breathing could be heard—panicked and unsteady. Perhaps Gerald had never experienced such chaos in his entire life.No matter how big the problem, he had always been able to handle it with ease. But this? This was beyond his control. The thought of dying here was mortifying enough, but the idea of his body being found in such a place was even worse—especially since, on the eve of the New Year, he had sternly scolded Carissa before leaving the palace."Come out!" Carissa shouted again, her voice sharp and commanding. Two barefoot courtesans stepped out. The room was warm, heated by silver charcoal. Carpets cover the floor, making it easy to walk barefoot."Will you leave on your own, or must I escort you?" Carissa asked calmly. The two courtesans hurried out, leaving Gerald behind the screen, trembling faintly.Carissa grabbed the embroidered tablecloth from the tabletop and moved behind the screen, draping it over Gerald. Then, she seized his arm and said, "Let

The news of the gentlemen's retreats' raid spread like wildfire through the entire capital.Fabian was struck dumb with shock. He had been feeling unwell that evening and hadn't gone to any of the retreats, never imagining it would be seized. The gentlemen's retreats had been in business for years, hosting many of the capital's elite. If Salvador had intended to shut it down, surely someone would have tipped him off. But there had been no warning—it had simply been raided out of the blue! When Fabian finally returned to his senses, he immediately called for one of his most trusted servants. He needed to know who had carried out the raid—and, more urgently, whether Gerald had been there tonight. He was well aware that Gerald frequented the retreat, and he had always kept that knowledge a secret. Even the rest of the Quinton family was unaware, except for Gerald's trusted servant, Cody. To Gerald, the only person in the gentlemen's retreat who knew his identity was the steward.T

In the study of the Quinton family's main residence, the flickering light from two lamps cast a cold glow over Malcolm's face, making his expression one of deep gloom and fury."Who knows about this?" Malcolm asked, his voice tight with barely contained anger.Though his control was still sufficient to keep him from losing his temper on the spot, his frustration was evident. The Marquis of Glandale hesitated. He couldn't admit that his sister had already learned of the matter. Only now did he realize why she had insisted on not coming along. This situation, it seemed, was best kept as quiet as possible."No one knows. I heard Lord Gerald was covered with a tablecloth when he was brought out. It's likely only Lady Carissa saw his face," said Fabian.Malcolm ground his teeth together. "She should never have seen it. If it were Deputy Commander Brown or Chief Lewis, it would be manageable. But her—how are we supposed to move forward now? She will make it her mission to let everyone k

Malcolm sat in the study, pondering for a moment before sending someone to Inkwood Hall to bring Logan back. However, his efforts were in vain as Logan had gone to Ebonflow with Kiera after the New Year and wouldn't be back until March.Furious, Malcolm threw the inkpot on his table. "All he does is play! If it weren't for the Quinton family's influence and his marriage to a princess, would he be living such a carefree life?"The Quinton family's steward, Mark, suggested, "Lord Malcolm, why not send the third lord and his wife instead?"Malcolm furrowed his brow. "A fool and a simpleton. If I send them, they won't be able to say a word without making matters worse."If only Rafael were still in the capital. Two men could manage a conversation better, but now he would have to go and speak to a woman. How could he possibly maintain his dignity? This matter couldn't wait until tomorrow—it had to be dealt with tonight. Gerald's health wasn't good, and he was locked up in the cold, dra

Staring at the steaming coffee, Malcolm had no desire to drink it. It didn't matter that his throat was dry and his mouth felt like it was on fire.Noticing that Carissa didn't respond to his mention of Gracewood Women's Academy, his eyes shifted. "I've heard that His Highness has a few capable men around him. Perhaps I could recommend someone..."Carissa raised her hand to stop him. "Lord Malcolm, let's not stray from the topic. Rest assured, Lord Gerald's identity hasn't been revealed to anyone. When he left the gentlemen's retreat, I covered his head with a cloth. Even now in prison, he is still covered."Her directness caught Malcolm off guard, making his face flush with heat. He didn't know how to respond. If he looked at it objectively, the matter was deeply embarrassing. If it had been anyone else from the family—any cousin or nephew—he would have ordered them beaten within an inch of their life and tossed to a remote estate to fend for themselves.Once the truth was laid

Once back at the palace, Salvador was unable to rise from his bed. Sebastian spoke briefly with him, hinting that he didn't have much time left. If there was anyone he wished to see, it should be done as soon as possible. The first person Salvador wanted to see was, of course, Victoria."That child… When he saw me, he couldn't stop asking about you. You didn't love him in vain, Mom," Salvador murmured, his voice weak.Victoria sighed deeply. "How cruel... his life must be lived hidden away in the mountains, never able to leave. Is there truly no hope for his legs?""I believe there is no hope," Salvador replied softly, his lips pale and drained of color. "But as I was leaving, he said, 'Dad, once I've learned enough medicine, I'll cure you. I'll make you better.'"Victoria's heart ached. "What a good child."Salvador's gaze drifted to the ceiling, his voice barely a whisper as he repeated, "Yes, he is a good child."After speaking with Victoria, Salvador asked Rafael to bring in

Salvador had temporarily settled at Eldermere Keep. The place was filled with every kind of medicine, yet his illness had reached a point where no remedy could ease his suffering.Still, staying there brought him peace. It was as if he had finally set down a heavy burden and could now live as an ordinary father. He spent each day with his son, sharing simple moments together.Carissa was allowed to visit and spend some time with Connor. He asked her about Ryan, specifically inquiring whether he had made any new friends."Ryan has no other friends but you. He always thinks about you," she reassured with a smile, thinking the eldest prince might be jealous.Connor was quiet for a long while, his expression tinged with guilt. Finally, with a deep sadness in his eyes, he softly said, "I have friends now, like Otto. Ryan should have his own friends too. I always think about him, but... I don't think I'll ever see him again."Carissa gently patted his head and smiled. "The future is lon

After the sun set behind the mountains, the temperature began to drop. Salvador had been carried up the mountain, but now, he was carrying Connor on his back as they made their way back into the estate.Connor had his arms tightly wrapped around Salvador's thin shoulders, and he couldn't stop the tears from falling. This was a scene he had never even dared to dream of. Not only had he never imagined being carried by his father, but even something as simple as having his father gently pat his head had always seemed like an impossible wish. But his father was so thin; there was no flesh on his back at all. How had he become so frail?Carissa and the others waited outside the gates. Not even Galen had been allowed in. Only Salvador's most loyal attendants, those who had carried the litter, were permitted to enter. The others, of course, were kept away from Connor. They all believed that Salvador had come to Eldermere Keep solely to recover from his illness. The estate itself was full

Salvador didn't fare well along the long and tiring journey, his condition worsening with each passing day. Sebastian did what he could—applying needle treatment and using medicine—but all he could offer was temporary relief. As they pressed on, the king's condition only seemed to deteriorate further.Fortunately, Salvador was a man of remarkable willpower. Despite his suffering, he gritted his teeth and carried on, unwilling to give in. He could not afford to back down—not now.Eldermere Keep lay in the southern province of Mendoria, where the climate was mild and temperate, perfect for someone needing rest and recovery. Even though it was now winter, the air was neither cold nor biting, more akin to the gentler days of autumn. The locals knew little of Eldermere Keep, though they often spoke of a physician's office that was the largest in Mendoria, as big as the one in the capital, also called Arcane Sanctum. There were other keeps, but this one was renowned for its abundance of r

Before Salvador left the capital, Rafael had already become regent and taken on the required duties. With his great military achievements, he had earned respect from both civil and military officials. At first, no one questioned his authority, and many even held him in high regard. However, with Salvador now ill and traveling incognito, rumors began to spread within the palace, warning people to be wary of the regent. The fear was that, as Cecil was still so young, Rafael might take advantage of the situation and eventually replace him.As often the case, such suspicion and rumors spread like wildfire, fueled by the mouths of many. Consequently, a number of officials lost their previous respect for Rafael. They even began to disregard his orders, paying them little heed and carrying out his commands half-heartedly.Noticing this troubling shift, Davis felt a sense of urgency. He decided to speak with Patrick, the Minister of Justice, who was also Cecil's grandfather and the father o

On the day of the first snowfall, a sudden idea struck Salvador. He hadn't attended court in some time, and now, seated on the throne, he declared his plans for a private journey to admire Starhaven's beautiful landscapes. As for the kingdom affairs, they had already been entrusted to Rafael, and that arrangement would remain unchanged. As Salvador appeared very thin and weary, many court officials tried to advise against the trip. But once he had made up his mind, there was no swaying him. He insisted that Carissa and Galen accompany him, along with Sebastian and Dorian. The very next day, they set off.It wasn't a spur-of-the-moment decision—Salvador had already discussed the matter with Rafael and Carissa beforehand. Sebastian had advised against it, but the king's mind was made up, so the renowned physician had no choice but to accompany him. While Salvador certainly wanted to see more of the kingdom, his true destination was Eldermere Keep, as he longed to see his son one last

Eustace waited patiently for Violet to finish her greetings before he could finally choke back his emotions."Rise, you little imp," he said softly, his voice thick with feeling.Violet slowly stood, her eyes brimming with tears. She tilted her head back, fighting to hold them in.At that moment, she regretted her decision. Why had she been so stubborn? Why had she insisted on getting married in the capital when none of her relatives were here?"Dad, once the wedding is over today, may we return with you? We can hold a celebration at home. Afterward, we can go to the guild and host another, if that's all right," Violet suggested.Eustace was pleased by the thought, but didn't want his daughter to wear herself out with so much traveling."Didn't you say you don't have many friends in Ebonflow? That's why you didn't want a grand wedding there," he reminded her."I don't, but you do, Dad, and so does our family. I can't be so selfish. I don't want you to be embarrassed because of m

Carissa had intended to spend more time talking with Violet today, but she had forgotten how many little tasks came with weddings. The hired bride attendants arrived to do Violet's hair and makeup, and before long, an hour had passed.Violet was already stunningly beautiful, but under the skilled hands of the bride attendants, she looked even more radiant—lovelier than the flowers themselves.Lunchtime came and went with only a light meal, and soon, the guests began arriving to see Violet off.As the groom's elder sister-in-law, Zoey wasn't supposed to be present but had insisted on coming. She said that since she was family to the groom, and as good as family to the bride, there was no problem. Isaac and Violet were finally set to marry in the golden month of October. In truth, Violet had accepted Isaac's proposal the year before, during the Starlight Harvest Festival. From that moment, she knew he was the one she wanted to give her heart to. When she agreed to marry him, she did so with all sincerity, trusting her feelings in that moment. It had taken a full year to arrange the wedding, but it wasn't because of the wedding gifts or dowry.Violet's dowry had been prepared by the Spencer family since her birth, gradually adding to it year after year. Now, they had even bought a house and a large estate in the capital. As for the wedding gifts, the Pathfinders Guild had long since prepared them on Isaac's behalf.Instead, the delay was due to differing opinions among the Spencer family, the Inferno Guild, the Pathfinders Guild, and Violet herself.Violet wanted to get married at Hell Monarch Estate, then have Isaac escort her to her estate in the capital. It seemed easier
