James had asked her a few questions, on the way to the pack, but nothing more than that. Elizabeth hadn't minded answering, and truthfully, she thought it was good for her. And for him.

If they both knew the other had a fiancé, if they both spoke about them, they wouldn't focus on each other, and disrespect their vows.

They were silent the rest of the drive through.

They pulled up to the boundary, and there was no way she would have known that except that the truck in front of them slowed down, and then passed through a thicket of trees, coming out at a clearing, and then stopped.

They pulled up next to them, and everyone climbed out of the truck.

The Sycamore wolves went first, though there wasn't much to worry about. There were no guard wolves that ran them down. Elizabeth almost stared in confusion. She'd sensed the Moirai wolves all through her passage to her cabin, following her, even though she'd been invited.

How had no wolves thought to even glance at three trucks, piled

Elizabeth spent the whole night watching over the sleeping Luna. She wanted to be sure Selene was free from the moon's grip. And when the sun rose, the Luna rose with it, waking properly.James had stayed by her side the entire night, even though Elizabeth had begged him to go sleep. He told her he could stay awake one more night without any harm, but he couldn't leave their only pack healer unattended and without protection in a foreign pack.Kenneth had agreed with him, and tried to stay as well, but he had been awake the entire day before, and most of the previous night. Kenneth didn't have an Alpha's strength, so James had given him an order to sleep. The wolf had pouted and snarled, but an Alpha's Edict couldn't be disobeyed. And in the most blatant and daring display of breaking the Edict but still technically following it, Kenneth had shifted in his wolf form inside the sleeping Luna's tent, and curled up around Elizabeth's chair and gone to sleep. He was, technically, still

  • Her Forgotten Mate   Chapter 16: Sharing Warmth

{Flashback}Elizabeth spent three days caring for the dying wolf. He hadn't woken up yet, which meant his body was healing itself, or trying to. The wounds hadn't gotten any worse. But they hadn't gotten any better either. Still he was dying, not dead, so Elizabeth continued to care for him. Changing bandages and face clothes as much as she needed to.His fever had left him drenched in sweat, so she'd been forced to bath him at least once a day, and change the bedsheets each time. It was very possible he was sweating out the toxins in his body, and she didn't want those toxins staying around. It was the fourth day after she'd pulled him from the forest that the injured wolf started to stir.Elizabeth darted to the other side of the house, near the front door. He was a strange wolf, still. Dying and injured and desperately in need of help, he was still a strange wolf in her home. She had to be ready to fight or run, if she had to.So she stayed a safe distance away as he slowly st

  • Her Forgotten Mate   Chapter 17: A Luna

James woke to find Elizabeth curled against his chest, shielded in his arms. He remembered waking up like this more than once before. But the time that came back to him is the first one. When he couldn't even see her face. She was absolutely beautiful, even when she slept. He remembered when he'd woken up after passing out, almost a full day later. She'd stayed with him the entire time, not wanting to let him lose her warmth for even a moment. She'd been starving, not having eaten for so long, but she had kept herself glued to his side.He had woken up that morning knowing something was different. About him, about her. He hadn't felt in danger in her home before that, but that morning was the first time he'd felt truly safe in a very long time.James glanced down at her again, frowning. She was not sleeping peacefully. Her eyes moved rapidly, her heartbeat erratic, fast and then slow. Her breathing uneven.'A nightmare?' James thought. But then her eyes opened slightly, and he s

  • Her Forgotten Mate   Chapter 18: Confusion

Elizabeth and James turned to Selene, stunned at her words.James realized he had never made the distinction. Most of the packs surrounding him had been aware that he had chosen a future Luna, but as Katrina was not Luna yet, she had still not been introduced as such. And here he was, introducing a she-wolf to them on a humanitarian mission. Sometimes, the Lunas accompanied the Alpha's on diplomatic missions. It didn't matter much for the sake of safety to keep the Luna at home. If the Alpha was killed, the next Alpha to ascend would have a different Luna by his side, and the old one would be driven out, or absorbed as a servant into the pack.It was a very natural assumption that Elizabeth was Luna. It was one he would have made, had the circumstances been different.Still, it needed clarification."I'm not," Elizabeth began to say.But James didn't give her a chance to speak."I haven't taken a Luna yet," James clarified. "But this is Elizabeth, my packs most valuable healer.

  • Her Forgotten Mate   Chapter 19: Rest

Elizabeth sat in the Alpha's Hall, having finished her supper, she was almost exhausted. But she kept going, feeding off the energy of the wolves here. It was like they were just starting to live again. They had been working for days straight. James had taken a group of fifteen wolves to the forest and thinned quite a few of the trees strategically. He'd uprooted the trees themselves. This allowed them to make almost another entire clearing, and the herd animals had already begun grazing there, the grass springing up, no longer competing with trees for nutrients.Elizabeth had watched as James had herded some gazelle, then wild goats, and then deer, to the clearing. It was simpler than just hoping they would stumble on it themselves. The fallen trees had also given them more wood than even James had imagined, and with thirty wolves working around the clock on constant rotation, James had already had five more cabins built in just a week. Five new homes for five families.Elizabeth

  • Her Forgotten Mate   Chapter 20: Lessons

{Flashback}Phillip had been recovering at a steady pace for the past few days. After the initial shock and loss of body warmth, Elizabeth had been monitoring the temperature in the cabin and Phillip's own personal temperature closely for the past couple of days. He'd been improving almost steadily. His eyesight had been badly damaged by the attack. It had partly returned, but she'd warned him it might not ever heal entirely. He could see the major outlines of things, but no detail. He could see the shape of her, but not the features that made her up.She'd also been watching his diet and recording every single thing down in her journal. She knew enough about healing to know that recovering from an Alpha's wounds was something that needed to be documented. Their world had such precious little information on healers and healing, that everything new had to be treated as valuable. Every piece of information was priceless.Phillip watched her from the bed, and Elizabeth didn't mind to

  • Her Forgotten Mate   Chapter 21: Believe

Elizabeth felt his lips on hers again, and for the third time, her mind jolted. It was like it was trying to remind her of something. A feeling, a sense she just couldn't escape. The first time she'd felt it was the first time he'd kissed her. Then again the first morning she woke up alone, after sleeping in the same bed as him. And now. As she felt his lips against hers, she felt her mind and soul warring within her. Trying to get her to remember. But remember what? Who was James to her? Why had she been dreaming of him since before she'd met him? Why had he felt so familiar to her?James pressed against her, and Elizabeth felt the tree trunk against her back, as James' torso pressed against her chest, trapping her between himself and the tree. He wrapped his arms around her entirely, pulling her as close against him as he could.Elizabeth felt his desperation and his need as he clung to her. And her first instinct was to respond. She wrapped her arms around his neck, holding him

  • Her Forgotten Mate   Chapter 22: Birthright

James woke before Elizabeth again, and again he found her in a Luna's dream. This morning, the thought made him smile. A hereditary Luna, definitely. He wanted to tell her, beyond excited and grateful that he could tell her something about who she was, and her family.A hereditary Luna, a she-wolf born with the ability to see the future, even if she was still unmated to an Alpha, was something extremely powerful. Only the greatest of Luna's could pass this ability to their daughters while they were still young. It meant that Elizabeth's mother had been a Luna, and a very wise one. It also meant Elizabeth's father had been an Alpha.Though James couldn't tell which one. He knew many Alphas, old enough to have sired a daughter that would now be Elizabeth's age, but he couldn't think of any resemblance to her in them, or in their Lunas.Could her pack have been destroyed? Decimated by an invading Alpha? But then why hadn't he killed Elizabeth? Alphas that took over territory almost ne

  • Her Forgotten Mate   Chapter 50: Wedding Rites

A wolf's wedding was held beneath the full moon. It was a tradition, a hope they lived by, that as the moon protects them all, the moon would bless the couple on this evening. It was the day of her wedding, and Elizabeth was waiting in her room for the wolves to come and help her. Ayla would be part of her bridal party today, and Selene was coming from the Sycamore Pack.Besides those two, who Elizabeth had requested to be in attendance, there were many of other wolves who had offered to help her. But Elizabeth had been wary, after Katrina just yesterday, and had requested only those two wolves to come to her rooms. They would bathe her in hot water and oils, then they would apply salves to her skin so the moonlight would shine off of her.Right now, the wedding was being set up outside, and the path to the altar was being lined with the freshest and cleanest soil.James would walk, barefoot, to the altar down the aisle. Leaving footprints for her to follow. And then she would wal

  • Her Forgotten Mate   Chapter 49: A False Daughter

"Hello, Katrina," Elizabeth greeted, walking into the wolf's tent unannounced. She hadn't knocked or showed deference.Elizabeth was done playing games. It wasn't the Luna's tent, it wasn't even the tent of an honored guest. It was just a spare room they'd set up quickly for her to stay in.The ground looked muddy and wet."Luna," Katrina made the slight bow that was offered to the Luna's, and Elizabeth remembered her doing one for Katrina, something that felt almost a lifetime ago now.It also felt like a betrayal, to herself, to James, to their mate bond."You are a Luna too," Elizabeth began. "If I'm not mistaken, Luna Vanessa is your mother, and she was wise, she passed her gift to you, am I correct?"The Luna's gift passing to daughters was a strange way of inheritance. A Luna was only truly a Luna when she was mated to an Alpha, the same way an Alpha was only truly an Alpha when he had the loyalty of a pack that agreed to follow him.But some Lunas could pass their gift t

  • Her Forgotten Mate   Chapter 48: A New Beta

The fight was finally over. Elizabeth could hardly believe it. Everything was over, all the lies and deception, the loss and manipulation. There was finally peace in the Moirai.Or, as much peace as a wolf pack could have. Two weeks had already passed since Bass had been exiled, and for two weeks, they've been living without his shadow, or fear of him, covering them.Elizabeth still felt slightly uneasy, though. The moon had still been showing her troubling dreams, things she couldn't yet explain.A knock on her door brought her out of her thoughts."Luna," the wolf bowed before her, and Elizabeth had gotten used to the deference very quickly. Even she had to admit, royalty had its perks. "The Alpha is summoning you, in his hall.""He is, is he?" Elizabeth arched a brow. "Tell him I'll be right there."Elizabeth glanced to the wedding clothes and jewelry again. She would be barefoot for the ceremony, it was their law. But something about her things looked missing, and she couldn

  • Her Forgotten Mate   Chapter 47: Challenge

Bass immediately realized his mistake. But it was far too late to make any attempts at correcting it now.Not only had Bass robbed them of a mated Luna, but he'd also then put every barrier to her possibly being found, and in the same attempt, stopped their pack from having a Healer. All of these actions were not only betrayal against James, but the entire pack as a whole."What did you do, Bass?" James asked, spreading his arms wide before him, giving Bass a chance to explain."You were never supposed to be Alpha," Bass hissed. "It was never supposed to be you. I was going to be Alpha!" Bass screamed, and every wolf took a few steps back. This wasn't an outright challenge for Alpha just yet, but it was getting there pretty fast.Elizabeth stayed firm in her place just behind James; she would move when it was an open declaration and not before.Kenneth stood firm next to her."So tell me," James spoke softly, encouraging. "Tell me what was supposed to happen."And Elizabeth un

  • Her Forgotten Mate   Chapter 46: Revelation

Elizabeth and James were preparing to return to the pack, but there was nothing else that they could do. Not really. More lives depended on them than just their own.Elizabeth packed up everything she would need. This would be well and truly her last time packing up and leaving here. It felt a little strange, though she'd done it so many times before already."Are you ready to leave?" James asked her.And she wasn't sure what she wanted to do, but she did know what she had to."I think so," Elizabeth answered, tying her last bag closed and passing it to James. They left for the Moirai together. This time, there would be no guards sent to bring Elizabeth home. This time James wouldn't leave her side even for a moment. Not while the threat to them, their pack and their mate bond, was still out there. While the threat still thought that they weren't yet uncovered. And James, much like the first time, well and truly didn't know what he was returning to. He had no idea the state that

  • Her Forgotten Mate   Chapter 45: Plans

"But why?" Elizabeth cried. "Why is he so invested in your choice of Luna?"James considered for a moment, before speaking."The Luna has more influence in a pack than any Alpha would care to admit," James began. "The Alpha is obeyed, always, but very often he is also feared. But the Luna is obeyed, always, and she is loved. And when obedience comes from love, rather than fear, the obedience is ingrained and the loyalty unshakeable.""And if Bass had the ear of the Luna," Elizabeth reasoned."He would have the sway over the pack," James shook his head. "It's just so unlike him, though. Bass is violent, he fights head on, and he fights recklessly. It isn't like him to be so underhanded and deviant.""Poor Katrina," Elizabeth began. "She was going to be used like a puppet. I'm glad she managed to escape.""Yeah," James nodded. "It wouldn't have been easy for her to be in that situation. Bass would have manipulated her to gain control over the pack.""Do you think his goal was to b

  • Her Forgotten Mate   Chapter 44: Remembrances

Elizabeth knew that something was very wrong, and she knew that something was wrong with her. This closeness to James that she felt was unnatural, wrong and definitely a once in a lifetime kind of thing. But there was no crushing desire with it, no all-consuming madness of a mate haze. And she knew what it could mean, but it would mean something very strange. She knew him, before. Somehow, somewhere, they'd met before. Because she was absolutely sure that what she felt for him was a mate bond solidified. But that just couldn't be possible because she absolutely didn't know him.But that could mean that something was wrong with her.Elizabeth watched as James tended to the fire, as he helped her clean the cabin, as he roasted meat for their supper. And each time he did something, something she had never seen him do before, her memory flashed. Like it was trying to remind her of something.James dusted out the blankets on her bed, folding them up, and she pictured him sleeping in

  • Her Forgotten Mate   Chapter 43: Intuition

James had a plan. A very solid and very crazy plan. But Elizabeth was his mate. If there was ever a time or place where his plan could work, it was here, with her. His plan meant never going back to his pack, of course, but that was a simple fix to the problem.James had left Bass in charge of the Pack, under Kenneth's watch. James had felt sure that Bass wouldn't do anything like he had done before. Bass himself had seen the repercussions of his actions, and would do everything to prevent that same situation from happening again. After Bass' short control of the pack, James had spent two weeks undoing the damage that had been caused by his misguided actions. The pack had to go on food rations and restrictions, in order to refill their winter stores. It hadn't been easy, as hunger ricocheted through the pack, and the wolves had weakened. They had also been miserable and had almost unanimously agreed that the situation was entirely Bass' fault.James had also sent away provisions

  • Her Forgotten Mate   Chapter 42: Home

Elizabeth woke up in her little cottage, the sun streaming in through her bedroom window. She had woken up every morning for a month now already, relishing the peace the morning here gave her. She'd been home for about a month now. She'd been living in the Moirai, working as their healer, when one night a stranger had come into her room, running straight for her, grabbing her.Elizabeth had screamed and tried fighting him off. He was very obviously stronger, and had the upper hand, until the guard wolves heard the commotion and came to intervene. The wolf had left peacefully after that, the guards following him out.The training healer had come to check in on her, and then helped her to her own rooms. But Elizabeth had decided that night, she couldn't stay in the Moirai. She absolutely had to leave for her home, and she'd set out as soon as she had the Alpha's permission, which was brought to her by the healer in training, who introduced herself as Ayla.Ayla had suggested to Eliz
