Ch. 36 - Beyond the Wall

Ruby POV

The scent hit me first, sharp, metallic, with a sickly sweet undertone. We'd barely crossed beyond the wall, leaving behind the safety of our quiet, controlled life. The air felt heavy, almost alive, pressing in on us from every side.

The landscape was harsh, overgrown forests twisted and gnarled, as if the trees themselves were corrupted. Patches of bare, cracked earth stretched out, interrupted only by jagged rocks jutting at impossible angles. It was wild, untamed, and hostile in a way that felt deeply unnatural.

The four of us fell into an uneasy silence. Hailey had told me stories about the lands outside the Great Wall the Queen built, but seeing it for myself was overwhelming. It seemed impossible for anyone to live in such a harsh environment.

"We should camp soon," I said, breaking the silence. "We need to be prepared if anything goes wrong." The moment we stepped foot on these barren lands I felt something was off and I needed to be ready for whatever came at us.

Gabe POVI looked back at the wall, now just a distant gray line on the horizon, and wondered if we'd ever see it again. These lands were dry, empty, and filled with evil. Which was nothing compared to the horrors of my mother. I never thought I'd miss the Queen's land, but right now, I longed for its safety. Out here, life was hell, a lonely, constant fight to survive. Peace and love were luxuries we couldn't afford.Beside me, Ruby was uncharacteristically quiet. Her usual snarky remarks had dried up, replaced by an intensity that set my teeth on edge. Sebastian trailed behind, lost in his own dark thoughts, while Hailey, who I still wasn't sure I could trust, brought up the rear. Her wary eyes scanned the surroundings, making my gut churn. We arrived at a town barely clinging to life, stretched out before us like a crumbling relic from another age. Buildings leaned at odd angles, windows shattered and boarded up, casting eerie shadows. The road was uneven, littered with debris, and

Sebastian POVThis place was absolute hell. The air reeked of stale smoke and unwashed bodies, the locals' faces as gray and lifeless as the crumbling walls around us. The food, if you could even call it that, was enough to turn my stomach. I had maybe a week left to live, and these were the last memories I'd carry with me: Ruby wrapped up with her fated mate, while I was surrounded by people who either wanted to steal the shirt off my back or bury a knife in it.I downed my fourth drink, letting the harsh burn of the liquor dull my senses. The alcohol here was wickedly strong, like it was brewed with something unholy. But I welcomed the numbness, the way it blurred the edges of reality and made this cesspool of a town seem a little less unbearable. Maybe the locals needed it to survive; I sure as hell did."You're strong, handsome." The voice was syrupy sweet, but it grated on my nerves. Three women flanked me, dressed in skimpy clothes, their faces caked with too much makeup. I lean

Gabe POVWe walked through the night, Ruby berating Sebastian, while Hailey trailed beside me, her every step dripping with mockery. I knew exactly what she was thinking without her needing to say a word. I wasn't the man she once knew, nor the boy she had grown up with."You're not exactly living up to the savage Alpha reputation, Gabe," Hailey remarked, her tone light but her words sharp. "Worried about your mate and her little best friend she loves so much?"My jaw tightened, but I didn't take the bait. Hailey was always pushing, always testing, waiting for me to snap. I knew she was trying to provoke the beast inside me, the one that could easily destroy everything in its path if unleashed. But that wasn't the kind of Alpha I wanted to be anymore.I had left my home to forge my own path, one not manipulated by my mother or driven by mere survival. I had easily overpowered everyone beyond the wall, feeling like a god among them, and it all felt pointless. Now, I knew the power insi

Sebastian POVLarge golden gates loomed ahead, oddly placed in the middle of nowhere, as if they were guarding a secret buried deep in the wastelands. "This is your home territory?" I asked Gabe, suspicion lacing my tone. Despite the hellish landscape we'd traveled, this place felt almost serene, too serene."Don't be fooled by appearances," Gabe warned, his voice low and edged with a tension that rippled through the air. "This isn't like your home. Trust no one, and remember what I told you. These wolves would gladly tear you apart and feast on the scraps."His ominous words gnawed at the edges of my resolve. As the gates creaked open, a faint chill seeped into my bones, and an unsettling silence draped over us. I stepped closer to Ruby, instinctively positioning myself to shield her, but Gabe's arm snaked around her waist, staking his claim. My jaw clenched, a flicker of irritation sparking within me; she was his fated, a fact growing more annoying by the second. The desolate landsc

Ruby POVI sank into a large mahogany chair, its plush cushions and inviting design exuding an old-world luxury. The fabric was edged with gold tacks, giving the chair an elegant, almost regal presence. Before me, the table gleamed with a dazzling array of clear blue crystals, nothing like I'd ever seen. Everything in this pack house seemed to be crafted from precious stones and metals, a testament to their wealth and power."Do you like my décor?" Gabe's mother asked, noticing my fascination with the unique table setting."It's beautiful," I replied, still studying the shimmering crystals. "I've never seen glass like this before." I reached for a pitcher of white wine, the light refracting through it like a prism, and poured myself some wine."It's not glass," she corrected with a hint of pride. "It's compressed crystals. They're abundant in the southern islands.""Really? We have plenty of green and red gems, but blue is rare where I come from." I turned the glass in my hand, sudden

His command washed over me like a wave, compelling obedience."Yes, Alpha," I responded automatically, completely lost in his gaze."What are you doing?" Sebastian demanded, looking between us with a mix of confusion and anger."She can't control herself," Gabe snapped back. "She needs to listen and learn obedience.""Learn? You're just forcing her to obey you!" Sebastian's rage was clear, and it made me crumble inside. I wanted to soothe him, to make everything right, but I was a mess. I was an omega, a slave to my Alphas.'Of course we are,' Scarlet purred. 'Look at them fighting over us. It's so sexy, don't you think?''No! I don't think that!' I scolded her. 'What are you doing to me, Scar? I feel like I have no control over my body or emotions.''We are a female omega surrounded by sexy Alphas. Our body needs them.''What? I

Sebastian POVI stepped into the grand library, where towering shelves glistened with gold accents, each one brimming with more books than I had ever imagined. The air was thick with the scent of aged parchment and polished wood. Ruby was beside me, her skin so close to mine I could feel her heat radiating over me. I always loved this woman, but I kept it inside all these years. Many nights I dreamt of us together, a blurry image of two bodies becoming one, and every morning I pushed it to the back of my mind. Now, I was losing control to hold it all at bay. Her small frame beside me, short black hair with purple highlights in front, and goddess, those eyes that shined so mysteriously at me. I wanted her right here and right now.Kane was overactive inside me, begging to reach out and take a small taste of her. Scarlet was releasing so much pheromones that I knew Ruby's wolf wanted the closest Alpha just to satisfy her heat. I also knew that wasn't what Ruby really wanted. She never

I just wanted to take Ruby to my bed, ravish her all night."Nothing." Gabe grumbled, cracking open the book his mother handed him. "Now you are going to keep secrets?" Ruby yelled at him, her anger trying to mask the burn coursing through her."Dietus wanted me to eat Gabe's heart. Take his power and be even stronger than I am now." I answered almost obediently. I would do anything she asked of me, tell her any secret."And neither of you told me this?" She released my hand, pacing back and forth. I missed her touch, needed more of it."I'm sorry. It happened and we didn't really talk about it. I'm not going to eat his heart, Ruby." "I'd hoped not!" She shouted. Her body now shaking. "I can't handle this, Sebastian. I need medicine, please." She begged me and Kane whined to make her better. "Gabe! There has to

Sebastian POVThe sand crunched under our boots as we stepped onto the shore. The island was almost too perfect, like something out of a dream, with golden mountains in the distance and a faint glow in the air that made everything shimmer. The wind carried a strange, intoxicating scent, like flowers mixed with something ancient and magical.I was still on edge, pacing the beach while Gabe rummaged through the supplies we found in a small, abandoned shack near the edge of the jungle. I couldn't stop thinking about Ruby, the need to find her clawing at me."You're pacing again," Gabe's voice called out from behind me. "You're gonna wear a hole in the sand.""Shut up," I snapped, spinning around to face him. He was grinning, of course, like this was all a game. "We shouldn't even be here. You know damn well we don't have time for this."Gabe stood up, brushing sand off his pants, his teasing expression faltering for a second. "Sebastian, we're doing everything we can. Sebastian POVI stood there, my chest still heaving, heart pounding from what had just happened with Gabe. My head was a damn mess. One minute, I was imagining Ruby, our mate, the one I craved more than air, and the next... Gabe's mouth was on me, and it wasn't just some accidental slip. It was intense, primal. It felt good. Too good. But did I really want him? I rubbed the back of my neck, the mark from Ruby tingling like it always did, reminding me of what we had to focus on. I could still taste her on my lips, still feel the rush of being with her, but my body was tangled up in something else. Gabe. What the hell was that? I wasn't into men. I wasn't into him.He was just there, right? Filling in the space, the need. That had to be it. My need for Ruby had to be leaking over to him. That's all it was.I stormed from the dinner table, showering long and hard to wash away his scent on my cock, but it didn't matter. I had the images seared in my brain, the pleasure alive in my soul. But she wasn't here, she was lost. We had to find her, but this damn mark on my neck was sending endorphins and desires through me. I needed to mate, to empty my seed and fill a hole.I fucked Gabe's mouth with everything I had. My hand ripping at his hair, dick impaling that wide throat until I burst again, filling him completely with so much cum. He was right, I was going to rut if I didn't let this all out. "Stand," I ordered then point to the chair. "Sit right there and jerk off."I took a seat in front of him, watching his hard delicious dick. I never thought about a man in this way before, but I did want him. I wanted to taste him, feel him. I sat there for a while, my hand playing with my cock as I watched him get off."Let me help, Alpha. We need more." Gabe teased me. I wanted to cave, to bend him ove

Gabe POVI just finished dinner, setting the food on the table and arranging it in a beautiful display in hopes to sway my Alpha to eat, but I knew he needed something else."You need to learn control, Alpha." I spoke softly, carefully, stepping closer to the untamed beast. Sebastian stood in the cabin, maps scattered around him as he watched the calm seas sway below us. He was losing his mind, a need to have his mate consuming him. "Gabe, get away from me!" He warned."No! I need you, she needs you." I insisted. "She's gone!" He roared out. "No, she isn't." I moved behind him, my fingers dancing along his neck, were her marked laid. "She is our mate and we can feel her. Ruby is alive, and we will find her.""I'm going fucking crazy. We have to find her. I have to have her." He growled at me, a heavy burden clear on his shoulders."You're a tangled mess, Alpha." I sighed, grabbing his hand to follow me. "You need to eat and you need a release. Gabe POVFor days, we searched. We scoured the ship, flipped through ancient books, anything that could tell us what the hell had taken her. But we found nothing. And in that time, I watched Sebastian spiral. He wasn't eating. He wasn't sleeping. The darkness inside him crept closer with every hour Ruby was missing. I'd seen him like this before, on the verge of losing control, but this time felt different. This time, there was no pulling him back without her.I tried talking to him, over and over. "We'll get her back," I said, my voice breaking the silence one afternoon as we sat in the cabin, the maps spread uselessly across the table. "We just need to keep searching."He sat there, his jaw clenched so tight I thought it might snap. "What if we don't?" he muttered darkly, his eyes hollow. "What if she's already gone?""She's not," I insisted. "We'd feel it, both of us. She's alive, Sebastian.""You don't know that." His voice cracked, the first sign of weakness I'd seen in days. "Wh

Her hand touched my face, gentle, soft, and it sent a surge of energy through me. Pure, unfiltered love coursed through my veins, and the world blurred into focus. There she was. My beautiful Ruby with long black hair, a red ribbon, and those mesmerizing brown eyes."I miss you." The words came out as a whisper, heavy with a desperation that clawed at my insides. I pulled her close, kissing her with all the longing I'd buried since she was torn from me."I've missed you too, my love," she whispered against my lips.
