Riana’s POV
Her response made a smile break out on my lips but it didn't last for long as I quickly switched back to a hard expression. “You made the right decision, you should be proud of yourself.” I said, my voice firm and deep. From the little I had heard from Doctor Fernandes who had been her family doctor for several years, I couldn't help but to pity her. Paying for her mother's surgery was something I could pull off easily without striking a deal with her but I couldn't hold myself. She was young and so I believed she would be able to carry my child even though it was just a one night meeting. At first, I wanted to discard this thought but when Doctor Fernandes wouldn't stop talking about her predicament, I had to propose the deal. “Sir, my mother… the surgery… time is running by quickly.” Her voice came out in a whisper as she grasped the edge of the chair with both hands. “I have settled that already.” I replied but the look on her face showed disbelief. Before I could go through the hassle of trying to convince her that her mother was currently undergoing surgery even before I proposed the deal, Doctor Fernandes stepped in and then wheeled her away. Pushing my hands into my pockets, I left my gaze on them for a while before shifting it in the opposite direction, watching the staff walking around. Everything I wanted in life, I got them. Wealth, fame and power, I wielded them at the tip of my fingers and not to talk of my marriage to a pretty woman. Taking a deep breath, I sent my teeth into my lips. The hunt for a child started the year we got married. I did everything I could to put my seed inside of her but she never got pregnant. Worried, I had to see a doctor and after examination, I learned I wouldn't be able to have a child that has my blood running through him. The thought of this threw me into disarray but I didn't let it weigh me down. My belief that I was going to get a child despite the doctor's diagnosis was so strong that I continued trying but as before, there was no result. This made me resort into surrogacy with the consent of my wife. She picked out the potential candidate and after we looked into her background and health history, she got inseminated with my semen but still, the results were the same. When I saw Novah earlier, a wave of conviction that she was going to bear my child hit me with a full force that I couldn't ignore, hence striking a deal with her. Smacking my lips, I made my way towards Doctor Fernandes office and the moment I stepped in, he stopped the conversation he was having with Novah. “My lawyer will soon be here.” I announced, plopping on my seat with crossed legs. From her expression, I knew she was curious as to why a lawyer was coming in and so I decided to explain things to her. “I do things with caution so that at the end of it all, each party will have nothing to regret.” I said, causing her to press her lips into a thin line. Pushing her hand into her hair, she tugged on it for a while, “Thank you for paying for my mother's surgery.” She said, her voice quivering. “I have played my part, it's time for you to play yours.” Leaning against my chair, I nodded at Doctor Fernandes who quickly crouched by her side. “We have to conduct some medical tests to see if you are healthy enough to bear a child.” He said to her and she nodded without thinking twice about it. Few minutes after Fernandes had just left with her, the door flung open and my wife, Jaylen stormed in. “You didn't tell me you were heading to the hospital.” She snapped with an accusing tone. Pissed, I replied with a hard tone, “So, how did you find out I was here? Were you keeping tabs on me?” I asked, locking gaze with her. Instead of responding to my words, she said, “I heard from the lawyer that you requested a surrogacy agreement a while ago… what is it for?” Her questioning was pushing me to the edge but somehow I managed to keep my cool. I wasn't going to answer her questions anymore as I didn't owe her such an obligation. Crossing my hands on my chest, I leaned against my chair. “Answer the damn question Riana.” She yelled, stomping her foot against the floor. Placing her hand on her chest, she leaned forward, “I’m the one who's supposed to choose a surrogate for you, why did you go behind my back.” “I owe you no explanation, woman.” “Oh really?” She huffed. “Are you taking me as a joke now just because I couldn't bear you a child?” “Come off it. You were there when the doctor said I'm medically fit, you are the problem here.” She snarled. Hee words made my heart constrict against my chest as I grasped the arm of my chair, anger running through my veins. Just then the fax machine beeped and immediately, I walked up to it and then pulled out the agreement the law office had sent. “Are you going to ignore me?” She yelled, rushing to snatch the document from my grip but instead, I pinned her against the wall. “You shouldn't get ahead of yourself.” I said with reddened eyes, increasing my grip on her neck with each second. “Sir, please let go of her.” It was Doctor Fernandes who spoke, only then did I release her, causing her to fall on the floor with a thud. “The result.” I said, nodding at the envelope he was holding. Passing it to me, I pulled out the documents it contained and after flipping through it, I placed the agreement before Novah. “Sign it.”Novah's POV With shaky fingers, I received the pen from him and proceeded to sign the documents without bothering to read through it. “Here,” I passed the document to him, ignoring the look I was receiving from the woman he was strangling earlier. “Good!” He nodded as he turned in the direction of the woman, “My wife, Jaylen Gunnar.” He pointed at the woman and immediately, she stormed out, banging the door shut. Her reaction was the least of my concerns as I wasn't going to have anything to do with her. According to Doctor Fernandes, I was going to be inseminated, that was all and not going to lie, I sincerely hoped I wouldn't be the one to carry his heir. “According to the document which you had signed, the moment the child is weaned, you have no right over the child anymore.” His deep voice brought me back to consciousness. Nodding, I replied, “That's fine by me.” With my lips pressed tightly together, I began to fiddle with my fingers, expecting more words from but he refu
Novah's POVA month later…Even though I still regretted my meeting with Riana, I couldn't ignore the fact that my current status was due to his involvement. Though I still worked at the mall, I wasn't bothered about anything as I had more than enough money to cater for my needs and that of mom who was still hospitalized. That night, he left me with a huge amount of money and as if that was not enough, he sent some money to my bank account. While I was still attending to a customer, my boss, Lady Elsie as we always called her, walked up to me. “Come see me in my office.” She said swiftly and then turned around to leave. “Yes ma'am.” I replied and the moment I finished attending to the customer, I made my way to her office. She was on her computer when I walked in but immediately, she took her gaze off and with her eyes on me, she asked, “Are you pregnant?” Startled, I staggered backwards, my heart lunged in my throat as I stared back at her. “Answer the damn question Novah.” S
Riana's POVFlipping through the documents in front of me, I tried to concentrate but my mind kept diverting. Frustrated, I fell back on my seat with my eyes tightly shut, thinking about the conversation I had with Jaylen this morning. Ever since Novah disappeared without a trace, my life had never been the same. I felt like a failure as I was unable to protect my unborn child and his mother. “Another surrogate… I will have to skip this. I bet it's my destiny to end my family legacy.” I muttered, sitting upright with my hands resting on the edge of the table. A few minutes later, the intercom in my office rang. Not in the mood to speak to anyone, I decided to ignore the call but the caller was persistent, pissing me off in the process. Before I could slam at the person on the other end, a feminine voice came through, “You must be Riana Gunnar.” “Yes!” I replied through my teeth as I wondered who I was speaking with. “Wesley King has invited you for dinner, you should meet wit
Novah's POVFrightened, I stepped backwards as I held onto the now empty cup of coffee. The moment he snapped his head upwards and we locked eyes, I began to run my mouth, “I didn't mean to run into you. I was… I mean… I should have taken the exit route instead of…” I filtered off in fright. The menacing gaze I was receiving from the man in front of me made my heart constrict against my chest. He was the one who was at fault even though I decided to take the blame and so he should let it slide. If he wanted a new shirt, I could get that for him as it was easy peasy but I decided to keep my cool until he said or did something that would vex me. With a low tone, he called, “Novah!” “Huh! Have we met before now?” I asked, giving the man a suspicious look with my head tilted to the side. “You don't recognize me?” He asked and immediately I tilted my head to the side. Still standing there, Thorne and Bishop, my five year old son arrived. “What is going on here?” Thorne asked, scoopi
Riana's POV “Novah!” I muttered, watching as she trailed after Thorne. Suddenly, my sour mood changed as a smile appeared on my face. Finally, my search was over and another thing that delighted me even more was, she was Wesley's daughter. “My instincts never lie to me.” I muttered, shifting my attention from them and then proceeded into the mall. But why Thorne? What was she doing with him of all people and then the child he was carrying? A lot of questions kept ringing in my head but I had no answer to any of them. Halting suddenly, I remembered the strange look on her face when she saw me. I had recognized her immediately, why didn't she recognize me also. Swirling towards the door, I dashed out of the mall only to see Thorne pulling out of the parking lot and even before I could try to get his attention, he drove off. Soon it was evening, meaning it was time for the dinner meeting with Wesley which I wasn't going to miss for any reason. On arrival, i
Reader's POVThorne was pacing about with his hands tucked in his pockets as he regretted his decision of joining the Wesley's for dinner. When Alexa informed him of it earlier, he was elated as it was going to give him more time to spend with Novah only for Riana to join them. “You're only hurting yourself.” Novah, who had been leaning against the wall, said, her hands crossed on her chest. She had tried all she could to calm him down but he wouldn't listen to her. “You don't understand how I feel.” He huffed, walking up to her. “Your father had invited me for dinner just to spite me. You saw how he praised him back there… he was poking it in my face that I’m a failure.” He ratted out only for Norah to start laughing. Annoyed that she was making light of his distress, he swirled around, clenching his fists. “Come on, it was my father who ticked you off, why are you blaming Riana for something he knows nothing about.” She chuckled. With a shrug, she took her back off the wall,
Riana's POVThugs will always remain as they are. They were always rash with their decisions, thinking that all their victims were the same. I had already predicted his move and so used my hand to shield my stomach. What I didn't expect was that the cut turned out deep. “Die already.” He yelled but before he could let go of his grip on my shoulder, I grabbed his shoulder and then threw him against the wall. Not willing to back down, he rose but before he could get to me, I set my foot on his face, sending him into the air. “You should leave before the cops arrive.” Thorne said and immediately, I turned to face him. With my hands strapped on my chest, I said, “You better come up with a convincing tale to tell me when I ask of her the next time.”Ignoring the glare he sent my way, I made my way out of the bar but before I could get into my car, he appeared beside me. “Do you know her before now?” “Why do you ask?” I retorted, crossing my hands on my chest as I looked him over. “
Novah's POVFor more than five minutes, I remained rooted in a spot, my gaze fixated on him as my heart rammed against my chest in a quick succession. All through the weekend, I had tried every single tactic I could think of to convince father not to let me learn under him but he paid no heed to my words. This was our first meeting in his office, yet I was shaking like a leaf in the winter. “Do whatever you pleases but one thing you shouldn't do is meddle in my affairs.” Riana finally said, making me release the breath I never knew I held in. “Yes sir!” I mumbled in response and without wasting more time, I scooted out of his office, heading straight for the bathroom. Doubling over and holding onto the bathroom sink for support, my eyes were heavy with tears. He hasn't done anything to hurt me yet I was scared. I was terrified to the bones as my head made up different scenarios at the same time. Was I acting this way because he is a part of the mafia? But I’m comfortable with
Novah's POVWith my lips pressed into a thin line, I began to fiddle with my fingers, trying to avoid his hot gaze but it was to no avail. Pushing my hair behind my ear, I kept shifting my gaze to my purse which was lying on the table, waiting for a call to interrupt. “Aren't you going to say anything?” He broke the silence in the room. “I have no idea… I really don't have any.” I mumbled, biting my lower lips as my heart rammed against my chest in quick succession. With each passing second, I felt blood draining from me but Riana wasn't helping matters a bit. The moment the call I had been waiting for came through, I reached out for my purse but Riana beat me to it. Turning off my phone, he tossed the device on the table. “Bishop's father, how did you get to meet Thorne.” He rambled. With his hands folded in front of him now, he said, “Unless you give me answers to those questions, you aren't leaving.”I thought he had forgotten about Bishop’s paternity but how wrong was I.
Novah's POVIt had been a month since I started working with Riana and I must say I had a lot of experience already. Apart from his cold demeanor and sudden switch of characters to a psychopath, I had no issues with him. But notwithstanding, I still couldn't help but to think about the question he has asked concerning Bishop’s paternity. All thanks to Dexter for his timely intervention, otherwise, I had no answer to give to him and of course, he was going to get furious with me. I had just finished getting Bishop ready for school when Thorne walked through the door and after a little chit chat with Bishop, he shifted his attention to me. “You're good?” He asked, flashing me a smile which I returned. “Yeah!” I nodded only to discover dark circles underneath his eyes. Closing the gap between us, I held his shoulder, and with quivering lips, I spluttered, “You haven't been getting enough sleep recently.” I mouthed. “How do you know that?” His voice was husky as he tilted his head
Riana's POVWith a calm look in contrast to my raging nerves, I stood behind the window, staring at the neon lights that littered the street. The more I tried to shove her face behind me, the more her features became clearer. “I have to find out all that has happened, else I’m definitely going to lose my head.” I mumbled, straining my ear to hear the approaching footsteps in the hallway. Unsure of who it belonged to, I made my way behind the door and the moment it creaked open, I huffed as it turned out to be Jaylen. “What are you doing here?” I got her startled with my question as she wasn't expecting me to be behind the door. “You've been acting strange for a while now… I know you won't be asleep just yet so I decided to get you involved in a conversation.” She flashed me a smile which I didn't return. Waddling towards my bed, she sat on the edge, patting the spot next to her, “Come join me.” She invited me. “I had a long day at work.” My tone was enough to tell her I wasn't
Novah's POVWith my heart slamming against my chest, I kept staring at my ringing phone, unsure of what to do. Riana being a part of the meeting made me act clumsy and I could only imagine what the directors thought about me. “You should at least pick his calls and listen to what he has to say.” Dexter mouthed, placing his hand on my shoulder. “I'm scared!” I muttered, beads of perspiration gathered on my forehead as I darted my eyes around in fright. Taking in a deep breath, I held my lips with my teeth, swiping slowly to receive his call. The moment I placed the phone against my ear, his voice came through, “What took you so long to answer the phone?” He asked with a stern tone that made me stagger backwards in fright even though he wasn't there. “In between, you did a great job back there.” He said and immediately, I let out the breath I never knew I was holding in. With a smile now tugging at the side of my lips, I parted my lips to speak but he beat me to it, “Before makin
Novah's POV“Leave now when I’m still being nice with you.” Riana said and with his back turned on us, he proceeded towards the closed door.It seemed like he had a pair of eyes at the back of his head because the moment Thorne held my hand, he said, “Leave without her else you will be doused in your blood the moment the elevator slides open.” His words were terrifying and at once, I pulled my hand from his grip. It was better I remain with him than to see Thorne lose his life when he was clearly trying to help. “You should leave now.” Dexter said, reminding me of his presence and without a word to any of them, I ran in to meet with Riana. When I walked in, he was looking out of his window with his phone against his ear. Taking a deep breath, I began to fiddle with my fingers, constructing and reconstructing my lines of words in my head. If I really wanted to wriggle off the invisible leash he had around my neck I had to be persistent and bold enough to square off with him. A f
Riana's POV The moment I stepped into the room, the lights which were turned off went on and a smirk appeared on the side of my lips. Looking around the room, I allowed my eyes to get settled on Hardin and after a nod from me, he went ahead to take off his blindfold. “Riana please don't hurt me, I swear I was going to replace the drugs before you find out.” Wren yelled on the top of his voice, trying to surge forward but he was pulled back. “What's going on here?” Novah's voice was barely above a whisper but I heard her clearly as I slowly turned around in her direction. The moment we locked eyes, she took a few steps backwards and then hid behind Dexter who was standing next to her. “Come over here.” I ordered and for a moment, the whole room was as silent as a graveyard. “Brother, you should leave her out of this.” Dexter broke the silence, trying to shield her further but with my gaze grazing against his skin, he had no choice but to step aside. “Should I come pull you myse
Novah's POV With my heart inside my mouth, I made my way into the elevator, keeping an ample distance from him but that didn't stop me from casting him side glances at intervals. To ease the tension in the air, I ran after him immediately as the door slid open and with my hands folded in front of me, I said, “Thank you for saving my son last night.” Feigning not to hear what I had said, he continued his long strides which I tried to keep up with only for him to halt suddenly, causing me to fall on his hard back. Swirling in my direction, he said, “We have to be somewhere in thirty minutes.” “Where?” I gulped, cold chills running through my spines. “Be prepared.” He said through his teeth only to resume walking again. With the way he was acting, I made a resolve to put an end to whatever relationship he was trying to brew with Bishop. This decision was made last night but I wanted to let it slide only for him to start acting up this morning. Now in the middle of his office, w
Novah's POV “Mom!” Bishop yelled out only then did I leave my position. Rushing to his side, I crouched next to him, hugging him tightly as I combed through his hair. “He wanted to kill me.” He said and in shock I pulled away from him only to see blood trickling down his face.A few feet away from us was the body of a masked man who was stone dead. Covering his eyes with my palm, I pressed my lips into a thin line as my chest rose and fell in quick successions. “That's enough now, let's go.” Father said, his hand brushing against my skin lightly. So that Bishop wouldn't see the corpse, I quickly scooped him into my hand and then began to waddle behind father only to be greeted with another scene. Riana and Thorne had their guns on each other's heads and their hands were pulling at the trigger, waiting to release the bullets in the barrel. “Stop it now.” I yelled but none of them paid heed to me. Snapping my eyes shut, I took in a deep breath before passing Bishop to father wh
Novah's POV Standing in a position, I began to dart my eyes around, trying to recall what I was missing. “Novah, come with me.” Father called in a panicking voice and when I wouldn't go after him, he grabbed my hand and then pulled me out of the building. Now outside the building, I was standing a few meters away from it, staring at the flames that were rising into the sky as my heart rammed against my chest. “What am I missing?” This question kept ringing in my head only for a loud scream of distress to rent the air. “Bishop!” I yelled, my eyes widened in fright as I stared at my son who was behind the window in the burning house. “I will go pick him.” Father said, trying to stop me but I bolted past him and with the speed of lightning, I hurried inside the building. With each passing minute, the raving fire continued to howl out in distress as it ate everything that was on its way. “Bishop please hold on, mom is coming for you.” I yelled, jumping past bits of fire all in a b
