This response did not shock Seraphine since she was well aware on how slow Eugene was at sending letters. 

Unlike Sharon and her who shared letters frequently, she would receive letters from Eugene one after three to four months although she sent him at least two letters a month.

And even those rarely sent letters had any content in them; only important details were mentioned. They were all concise and straight to the point, making Seraphine feel as if she was reading a report for a subject rather than a letter.

That's why, such an answer might be considered to be a lame excuse when it came from someone else, but when it came to Eugene, she knew it was the truth.

Seraphine was sure he wrote half of the letter and then forgot about the rest. Only after she pestered him enough would he be willing to finish the rest.
