In my defense, I never said it was a short story…
Dargan’s POV
I’ll be honest.
I didn’t know that my uncle had joined the Council of Elders. But thinking back it did make sense. His father before him had been a member and while it wasn’t a “family” thing, having nothing better to do (since he was the “baby brother” to the alpha) it made sense he joined them. My father and he never got along very well anyway and if he didn’t look and smelled exactly like my father, I probably wouldn’t have known it was him.
I’d been moved to an interrogation room and was now sitting in front of the three Elders – my uncle, another male I didn’t know, and a female I remembered also was at my trial 15 years ago. My uncle stood as I entered the room, along with the other members of the Elders Council, and gestured for me to take a seat. As if this was a job interview and not my fucking life on the line…
My plan had been for them to show up at some point, but I didn’t expect them to be here this early in the game. But for now, I’d be a good dog and listen to what they had to say and sit down.
“There have been raised some questions on whether or not you killed your father after all,” Uncle Deegan said as he sat down in front of me.
“Just some?” I mocked him, not hiding the fact that--- yeah, I still harbored some resentment towards them. “How generous of you to consider that after---” I pretended to look at my non-existing watch. “15 years. What changed?”
I smiled at them innocently. I knew exactly what changed, but kept my mouth shut about it. Like hell, I was about to show my hand this early in the game.
This was just the beginning…
“This is a delicate situation,” the female Elder said, hiding his discomfort as she sat up straighter and unbuttoned the suit jacket she was wearing. “Alpha Christian has lost his mate and Tristian---”
Tristian, I echoed in my mind, commemorating the name to memory.
I was going to remember that.
“Tristian is his only son,” she continued, not knowing how dark my thoughts had gone. “He’s young and will learn---”
I rolled my eyes and snorted out loud. It sounded like a rehearsed line, and it made me wonder how many others of his victims were out there. Others who didn’t put up a fight.
Or lost it all together…
It made me sick!
“Sure, he will,” I cut her off, eyeing all three Elders who looked more like the rejected cast of Men in Black than werewolf Elders. “He will learn that if he rapes and kills a girl, daddy will make it all go away because the Elders need their money for their little breeding project.”
That caught their attention!
“I’m a rogue, not an idiot,” I snickered, enjoying the stunned expressions on their faces. “I know all about your little side dealings with the Blackwood Pack.”
Werewolves – even in their primes – were having problems producing more werewolves. Even the most hardcore bunnies only managed to produce a child every 10 years or so. In other words, we were a dying race! And while humans got pregnant more easily than she-wolves, unfortunately for werewolves, sex with humans was strictly forbidden, because…
Well, let’s just say they broke too easily!
Trust me!
I had to find that out the hard way…
Anyway…
Despite the laws that prevented werewolves to mate with humans, the Elders Council had started a breeding program, using humans as surrogates. Their plan was to breed more powerful werewolves such as alphas or betas, and later to increase the numbers of werewolves.
I’d stumble across their dirty little secret more or less by accident. I was looking for a woman in that district, and when I finally found her, she was just one of several dozen. All of them were tied to surgical-like tables and kept docile and from screaming in pain, as they were being raped by several of the most powerful alphas in the world.
All in the name of producing an heir and saving the werewolf race.
And Blackwood funded their operation…
“I have no idea---!” exclaimed the other male Elder in outrage, but I hadn’t even begun yet…
“Dunstee Road,” I cut him off, my smile never wavering. “22nd and 3rd. Ring a bell?”
I was teasing him at this point and winked, making him reel back in his chair. But in my defense, to see their faces go ghostly pale and hear their hearts drop was something I found rather amusing.
But I wasn’t here to have fun…
I was here to get out!
“Yeah, now that all the bullshit is off the table, how about you just cut to the case?” I sighed as I leaned forward in my chair and looked my uncle dead in the eye, disgusted to think that I was remotely related to his man.
“You can’t kill the kid, although he obviously deserves it,” I laid in on them. “But you can’t kill me for his crime, because you can’t do that without a public trial, which will be – pardon the pun – murder to have me convicted. Because the second I demand an Alpha command to be put on him, he’s going, to tell the truth, and you’re fucked.”
He was so angry, that there was practically steam coming out of his ears. Not only was I being extremely disrespectful, something that was a sure-fire way to piss off any alpha wolf, but it also sort of rubbed it in his face that---
Yeah, he wasn’t one!
And there might have been some underlying anger-related issues there, that my uncle hadn’t worked through. Which only delighted me more. Hell, just to be sure that I pushed all his buttons, I smiled brightly at them and fluttered my eyelashes.
At that, the vein at his temple popped!
A loud growl filled the room and suddenly the table between us was gone. And my uncle held me by the neck up against the wall. My wolf growled in my head, pushing for me to fight back, but I held him down.
Not the time…
“You little ungrateful---!” he hissed--- and then he was gone.
“Deegan! Control yourself!” hissed the woman, before she turned to face me. “I apologize for that, Mr. Hellson.” She took in a deep breath and straightened out the non-existing wrinkles in her jacket before she looked up at me again. “But I think you’ll find that our solution to our problem is equally beneficial.”
“Really?”
Now I was curious!
I mean, I’d been hoping they were going to offer me some kind of deal, but---?
“How?” I asked, feeling a little wary all of a sudden. I’d planned for most things, but not even I could foresee everything. Had I missed something? Was there something I hadn’t considered? What could have---?
“You’re an alpha wolf and your kind is hard to come by these days,” she stated flatly as if she were reciting the words from a card. “So unless you want us to keep you unfit for trial and execute you here and now.” And then a little grin spread across her lips.
“You’ll become the new alpha of The Tartarus Pack!”
Well--- Fuck. Me!
Of all the things I expected to happen---- that was last on my list!
But this does bring us back to where we started…
Me wishing I was back in a cell and that the people in front of me would just burn in hell, as the Elders gave me an offer I couldn’t refuse if I didn’t want to end up dead.
And here I’d been thinking that nothing could shock me…
Finally! Present time…Dargan’s POVThe Tartarus Pack was – for lack of a better word – a dump. Apparently, the alpha had gotten into some shady dealing with the wrong kind of people and in the end, he and his whole family had run away, leaving the pack at the mercy of the rogues he’d fucked over. In the end, the Council had to step in and had gotten rid of the rogue problem. But since there wasn’t another alpha wolf in the pack who could take over, the Elders were in a somewhat pickle. They couldn’t keep one single pack under their protection indefinitely and needed someone to step up and be their alpha. And since alpha wolves were hard to come by these days, they were ready to do just about anything.Literally!Because they settled for me!And while it wasn’t what I’d originally intended, between that and not being dead it was an obvious choice.I accepted.“Guess I’m the Alpha of Hell now, ha?” I joked. But seeing as the room was full of stuck-ups, the joke sort of didn’t land. I,
Dargan’s POV“This is…,” Ashton mumbled looking around with a look of disgust on his face. “Depressing.”Well, seeing as he came from a pack that had enough money to wipe their asses with it, I understood that he found the “cabin in the woods”-look sort of depressing. The packhouse was barely a one-and-a-half-story building, with some desks scattered across the main floor and a closed-off office in the back. The bathroom was cramped next to what looked like some kind of enforced holding cells and to top it all off:No AC!Already it was better than most dumps I’d been living at. Because seriously, have you heard the noise a broken AC makes? Let me tell you, it’s enough to make people consider murdering someone.Or suicide!Whichever gets you out of there the fastest…“What? You expected hell to be an amusement park, Ashton?” I smirked as I stood beside him and for now, just threw my bags on the ground.“My name is---” he grumbled but cut himself off mid-sentence and hopelessly shook h
Dargan's POV“Do you have a name for this very perceptive alpha to call you?” I asked in the same sarcastic tone that she used, but unlike her, I wasn’t on edge. I was having fun. And yes, I did enjoy the look of surprise on her face when I didn’t growl or force my alpha aura on her.Something she was used to – and something that obviously wouldn’t work since she didn’t have a wolf.“Ashley Arthur,” she said with her head held high.“Arthur?” I echoed, pretty sure that I’d heard that name before. Then it clicked! Archer Arthur was the name of the alpha that had turned tail on his pack and ran off, leaving them at the mercy of rogues.A latent with alpha parents AND an alpha brother!Boy, had she been dealt a poor lot in life. Not only was she a disappointment to her pack, but she was probably also an embarrassment to her parents. No wonder she was on edge around me.She expected me to care about shit like that…
Dargan’s POVSomething was wrong!I knew that as soon as I got to the first floor. I’d sat back for a while, watching the little minx take her frustration out in the kitchen before disappearing downstairs to what I could only imagine was her private bedroom. Then I decided that I needed to find my own room, take a shower and then find something to eat.And that’s when I knew. There was a scent in the air that felt all too familiar to me. The scent of tears, pain, and blood. My wolf pushed forward and I tracked the scent down. As I got closer, I heard it too.The whimpers.Begging to make it stop! The sobs…My wolf was going crazy inside my mind and I felt him push me hard. My own heart was racing and a part of me felt like it was on fire. I needed to find her!I needed to---I finally found the correct door. It was locked but I wasn’t about to let something like that stop me. I pulled out the knob
Dargan's POVI took my hand away from her wet core to undo my pants. She first let out a howl of protest, and then growled at me, pushing herself against me in a desperate need to get the release she craved.“Easy, Love,” I soothed her, as I easily restrained her with just one hand while the other undid my jeans. “We’ll both get what we want in just a second.”She whined softly but was too weak to do anything about it. My member sprung out easily and I groaned as I let her slide up and down my cock, without penetrating her. Had to make sure first that---“Are you on prevention?” I hissed roughly into her ear, nipping it with my teeth and making her cry out.“The pill,” she moaned, fighting in my hold and eager to get to my throbbing cock. “Been on it for four years.”“Good,” I hissed--- and slammed home. She cried out as I filled her with my cock, burring myself at the hilt inside of her. She panted and moane
Dargan’s POVI woke early as always. Despite spending weeks at the bottom of a prison cell, I guess my biological clock was still fine and kicking. Gaia was sleeping peacefully next to me and seeing her there felt perfect.Like it was meant to be…But the second I turned over and realized that the space next to me was empty, a lonely longing settled into the pit of my stomach. I couldn’t explain it but it felt like there was a part of me missing. Or a part of something missing.Something important…Shaking off the emotion, I got up and took a shower. I realized that Ashley ran through my mind more than just once and while I couldn’t explain why I was looking forward to seeing her today.Later…!After I took care of Gaia…With the intention to go downstairs and make us some breakfast, I instead walked back into the bedroom to see Gaia stretching out on the bed. The cover had slid down exposing most of her delici
Dargan’s POVYou know your life is a clusterfuck, when you prefer a quiet cell to the people standing outside of it, offering me a way to escape execution. My crime?Or would that be “crimes”, considering I’ve been charged with several murders?Well, fuck me if I know… First, I allegedly killed my father. Because what kind of son, doesn’t want to kill his father from time to time?Especially in a fit of rage…That’s what they’re saying at least. That we had an argument and I killed him in a fit of rage.Sure…It had nothing to do with the fact that I walked in on my mother crying and screaming in pain. Barely able to breathe. Despite being just 14 at the time I knew exactly what it meant. My father was fucking another bitch.I knew he wasn’t a saint, but I’d always loved and looked up to my father. He was a good man and an even better alpha. He was the one who preached to me about the sanctity of a mate bond. How precious a mate was and how to treat them with kindness, respect, and l
Days, or weeks, or months ago…Dargan’s POVI knew I was close to a pack. The Blackwood Pack, if memory served me right, but for all I cared, it would be the Blue Lagune, and I wouldn’t give less of a fuck. I’d parked my truck a couple of miles back on an old, deserted road and had shifted into my wolf, going for a long well-deserved run after almost a week in my human skin.It felt good being on all fours again. Being a werewolf and stuck in the human world was a nightmare for an alpha wolf. All werewolves needed to shift just like we needed air to breathe. Being stuck in the city grated on my nerves and I’d become gradually more irritated, to the point where I was even telling my manager off. And considering that the man controlled my paycheck, I knew a run was long overdue.I’d been running around, hunting and just soaking up the sun, when I heard the first scream. The sun was getting low, and I was on my way back to the truck, so I paused, wondering if it was my mind playing games

This might take a while…Dargan’s POVThe alpha was back and damn I wish he wasn’t! Someone had seriously pissed in his porridge this morning--- On second thought, the entire pack might have taken a dumb in his porridge this morning, because he was taking some serious anger out on me again. And for once, I didn’t have the gag. Not that it worked in my favor or anything. He would ask a question and whenever he didn’t like the answer, he’d punch me.And right now, he didn’t like anything I said…“You were standing naked above her!” he said--- although how he knew that, was beyond me, but it seemed like he was twisting the tale, so he’d be a witness as well. Probably to add credibility to his son’s story. And right now, trying to get me to change mine…“You’re telling me that was a coincidence?”Was I mad for finding his question funny?“You’re telling me that your wolf is so small, that your clothes don’t rip when you shift?” I mocked him back, knowing that no matter what I said, he was
Nope, still wasting away here…Dargan’s POVI was left alone for some time after that. This time I managed to keep time by the meals that came and went into the cell. Which seriously should have been my first clue that something was amiss.Never trust anyone who’s trying to feed you…Everything else remained the same. Until one day when the cell door opened and the man from earlier entered. The dead girl’s father. He looked pretty much the same, but for some reason, he didn’t have a rank anymore. Oh, he was definitely still a very powerful wolf, but now he didn’t hold a position within the pack now…Wondered what happened there? Not that I asked. Hell, I didn’t say anything despite him looking at me expectantly. As if waiting for me to say something. Again, I didn’t. Mostly because whatever insanity had overtaken me the other day had left and I was back to being somewhat normal. The other reason was simple: I learned from a young age that if you kept quiet, you would hear a lot…“I wa
