Allan closed their apartment door behind them. Edith was busy pouring herself a drink from the mini-fridge by the bar in the sitting room. He let out a sigh, “Pour me one dear. We’ll be up for a bit; I think working out this one.”

“Yes, it seems if it’s not raining, it's pouring around here. One crisis to another, it seems. Which crisis have you in this state?” Why’d he made her a mother? Her instincts about everyone around went into overdrive when she gave birth to Gregory and never stopped. No one could hide anything from her. She didn’t even contemplate playing dumb.

“The humans. I’m worried it’s a mistake just to welcome them. It’s going to backfire on us at some point.”

“Look at it this way. Someone sells a piece of toast with the image of Mary on it for thousands of dollars. They cry and moan about haunted houses. They poke about for a few hours and run away. No one bats an

They’re human. But they have the hallmarks of fae blood within them. Doctor Graves can confirm that. If they are Fae, they might be our ace in the hole. They may be immune to what Fae can do. It all depends on what type of fae was their ancestor and how long ago they appeared.”"Wait, a minute. Part Fae? But I thought Fae believed it was slumming if they mated with a human.”“Traditionally, that’s the view. A few Fae must have not agreed. For this view to be held.” Dean made a sour face at that.“Have you told anyone else about this? Have you told them this theory?” Edith stepped in before this conversation went down the rabbit hole.“Right now. I thought I’d tell you and then Gregory. See how you wanted to approach this. If another faction comes here and recognizes their abilities.”"How much Fae blood are we talking here? I mean, when could this have happened? There are varying deg

The office was quiet as the small group filed in and settled into business. “Fine. Now what’s so important that it’ll change everything? What do you believe is true?” Gregory put his morning coffee on the desk. He reviewed the faces in the room.“As asked. I started looking for supernatural creatures that exhibit the empathic traits. The list isn’t long. I found that there are patterns to the empathic traits. There’re records of Fae who could read and manipulate emotions. Or experiences and memories. But other than that. Nothing. Then I looked for records on twins and abilities. Gregory, Alpha. Chances are both have some skill. So, if the twins are together their abilities are whole and stronger. This happens. There’re records for it.”“Wait. Fae? I don’t see any Fae features in them.”“Well, the amount of Fae blood in them may be small. A distant ancestor’s all it takes. I&rsquo

Once the shocks were over. Ian and his men gathered. They whispered together in a corner. The others discussed different matters. “We’ve not talked to each other. They’ve done a pretty good job of keeping us apart. Any issues I need to know about? What’re your feelings?” Ian wasn’t comfortable talking, but he needed to know if they’re in danger. “It’s been good for me. Aria has been catching me up to speed on everything going on. How can I believe they think we’re fairies? I don’t know about you, Jax, but I don’t feel evil.” “I don’t think they are all evil to the core. So, I’m to gather, certain types of f

Yolanda was up to her ears in weapons prep while she cursed herself for letting Ian getaway. He’d have been an excellent help here. She handed packets or ready collections of weapons for the enforcers. One of her assistants would finish handing out the rest. She sent the revised list of things that they needed to Jeff, and she was on to the next thing. * *

Yolanda lay down on her bunk within the enforcer bunkhouse along with the others going into the Dream Realm for guard duty, etc. Tonight there would be more than normal. As there would be those hunting for the Fae. Sleep was slow in coming for her, and that always annoyed her. She already missed having Ian around. How did she end up with the luck of having the only human for a mate? She needed to concentrate and get to work. She must get into the Dream Realm because she was the leader in this. Last time she was babysitting the Luna. Yolanda believed that’s where she should be now. But nope. She’s here. Trying to sleep so that she can head up the search for the Fae. No pressure. • Hell Hounds   Ian’s Patrol, Bears, Bears, and Dragons

Ian was out in the cold. Night fell. He could see the shadowed forms of the three wolves just ahead of him. They’re headed towards the front property. They’d turn around at the main entrance and then circle around back towards the packhouse. The moon showed through the scattered winter clouds, giving him light. He doubted that he’d catch sight of trouble before the wolves ahead of him within this lighting. The instructions he received were correct. He’d be the ace in the hole if anything happened. The small group stopped and returned to human form before they approached the guardhouse. No one wanted to answer the hard questions about wolves. Never mind three of them. He did marvel at the ease they possessed concerning those backpacks. Everything contained and at the ready.

  • Hell Hounds   The Dragons are Here

Ian saw enough of the first dragon shifter’s appearance he understood they were old and formal. First, they wore a modern take on medieval clothing. They looked like they were part of a Viking documentary. Tunics, pants, and boots. The women wore simple dresses that ended just past the knee. In place of winter jackets, they wore a heavy type of cloak. Ian realized the packages they carried were the cloaks wrapped around their clothing. He left the scene. Ian wondered how many generations of dragons flew that same way? Walking through the woods in the dark. It was his job to make sure that none lagged or became lost. Behind him there were vehicles, trucks, SUVs, trailers, and several campers. Ian overheard a child ahead of him asked his mother if they’d stay here for a while or would they be moving again. They didn’t have a stable home. This wasn’t the first event

Ian sat with the others, listening to the various groups of people talking about their lacklustre patrols. Hal and Jaxon sat with him. They ate while making small talk. The twins’ expression told him. They’d something they needed to discuss with him in private. Though there was no space for that. More people entered the conference room. Dragons, by the clothing they wore, along with serious expressions. Gregory followed them in. He stepped to the table’s head. The dragon leader to his left and the Fianna hunter to his right. “Ladies and Gentlemen, may I have your attention, please? Thank you. I know you are all tired. We have news for you. It’s not great. But it’s news.”&

  • Hell Hounds   The Injured List and the Fallout

The group hobbled into the kitchen since the main sitting room and games room on that floor now contained meeting rooms that were in use. Their aim was to see if the back private sitting room was available. It was as if you ignored the food stored in the back of the room and glares at Hilda, warning them not to damage anything. But neither Yolanda nor Hal enjoyed the prospect of walking up the stairs to the second-floor apartments. No one expected them to walk to their cottages now in their state. The cold and snow made it a less than enjoyable walk, with their pace slowed by their injuries. Now is the time she cursed the fact that instant healing wasn’t real. “So, we’re all stuck on the injured list and out of the action. What do we do

  • Hell Hounds   Debriefing

Several days later, their little coterie assembled outside of the hospital in the Alpha’s office to be debriefed on their mission and their future. With them sat several other people. Mages, dragons and other species representatives involved in the mission sat in on the debriefing. “I’ve been able to piece together the facts from speaking to most of you, but I wanted to hear from the two I couldn’t speak with. Please correct me if I’m wrong. You were all successful in deploying the bombs to disrupt the movement of the Fae in and out of the Dream Realm. However, because of unforeseen incidents, that injured two of my people. Now they will heal in time. But that means they’ve are now added to the temporarily out of commission list along with the rest of their group. What exactly is the state of the

  • Hell Hounds   Hal’s Time

Aria sat in a chair and watched Hal breathe, willing him to awaken. Five days passed since his surgery. Dr. Graves believed Hal improved daily, but she wouldn’t be happy until Hal spoke to her directly. She had hoped Hal would awaken soon. Because every time he needed more medication, he’d fret and make noise. Each time it happened, Aria became more hopeful, only to have that hope dashed. Jax came in and took over often for her so she could get food, a shower, or even a little sleep. Gregory pulled the teams from that night for work, except for Ian. He managed the armoury to ensure the enforcers, combating and hunting the Fae, had access to weapons and supplies. The hospital room door opened and Jax’s head poked through. “Hey, shi

  • Hell Hounds   Yolanda’s Independent Streak Rears Its Ugly Head

Ian’s phone trilled with a text message as he lay in the dark. He’d been strong-armed into bed by Gregory’s mother, Edith. If he hadn’t been so tired, he’d have thought it funny. Growing up and for most of his adult life, he’d never truly understood the meaning of a smother. But Edith showed Ian exactly that with Hilda as backup. The two women watched him eat, all the while reminding him that Yolanda needed him to look after himself. He needed to eat and sleep more. But when Ian tried, he couldn’t forget his mate and one of his best friends lying in the hospital not far away. Even Jaxon felt the effects of Edith’s smothering. She’d hauled his butt out of the armoury and force him to go to bed.

  • Hell Hounds   Awaken

Yolanda’s eyes were extremely heavy when she finally pried them open and then she realized what a waste of time that was. The room was practically pitch dark. The silence was broken by beastly snoring that was all too familiar. Desire was in a chair in the far corner of the room, asleep. This wasn’t where she lay down to enter the Dream Realm. That’s when everything came rushing back to her and she realized she’d beat the odds. She’d survived the blast and returned to herself. But her ankle throbbed quite a bit, and she wondered if she’d broken it. It’s a hazard of the Dream Realm. It may be harder to get injured or die in the Dream Realm, but if you succeeded in either, then it occurred in this realm, too. Findi

  • Hell Hounds   Armoury Mess

Ian wasn’t sure how long he’d sat with Yolanda quietly in the dim hospital room. His mind ignored the strange noises from outside in the corridor. This sounded more like what he’d expect an animal hospital to sound like than a human one. But he needed to stop himself from that. This wasn’t a human hospital, and the patients weren’t human. The growls, roars, and inhuman screams proved that. But for him now, he felt such a mix of emotions from it. Ian now knew many as people, and his brain couldn’t reconcile their animal sides without feeling their pain. He now felt sure he’d gone into the right profession. He couldn’t see himself in any form of the medical profession or veterinary practice. He wouldn’t be able to do it. Now add in that he’d seen actual magic used to save some of these beings’ lives. It boggled his mind. From putting beings into a

  • Hell Hounds   Fallout

Ian and Jaxon paced one of the medical centre’s private waiting rooms with Gregory and several others. Hal was in surgery to have an arrow removed from his back. They’d been told over an hour ago that it would take time, but he’d survive. However, Ian only moments ago found out that Yolanda’s team returned safely except Yolanda. Now Ian paced for a new reason. Yolanda should have awakened with her team. Dr. Graves now worked on her with a team to find out why she wasn’t awake. Everyone in the room could all but taste stress and tension in the air. The medical centre was an example of organized chaos. Between medical staff, druids, and mages. Merfolk acted as orderlies, cleaning staff, caregivers, and even administrative staf

  • Hell Hounds   Dream Realm Mission

Yolanda now carried the device into a sling in her jaws. Her patrol followed her. All were in their wolf form. They were all highly strung, waiting for word to move out and place the device, or found by the Fae and attacked. No one wanted the last option, so they went out of their way not to attract Fae’s attention. There they lay lying in wait in the dirt beneath several bushes. These Fae appeared very busy partying and playing their twisted games. Some flitted in and out of the Dream Realm. Time meant little within the Dream Realm. With its perpetual twilight. It’s sky bearing no moon and the world itself giving off an odd ethereal glow from no specific place. The foot of a goblin appeared out of nowhere before Yolanda took her by surprise. She held strong and didn’t grasp. The goblin in all its ugly glory failed to see her behind him. So, moments later, he moved off into the distance

  • Hell Hounds   Into the Thick of It

Ian stood watching shapes flit from one shadow to another. He could hear music from live musicians playing. These Fae lived up to every nightmarish tale he’d ever read. Dancing, drinking, and not caring about the world around them. They destroyed as much as they created. Now, though, he’d caught glimpses of humans within their midst. Humans were so far gone into drink and drugs, they probably believed this was all a drug-induced hallucination. These humans must have come from the streets mostly, but there were a few that appeared to come from other sectors of life. “Sickening to watch, isn’t it? They’re completely lost to the glamour of the fae. The only way to get them out of it is to remove the Fae from this realm.”
