It was a days journey from Clusium to the city of Rome. They had left at dawn as planned. The guards were all set and General Cato rode at the front of the party. Trix could not help but stare at the man. He it seemed that he was chiseled from marble. With every look he gave Trix she felt like melting. It was something about this mysterious general that attracted her. They came to a halt to rest. She turned her attention to Hector, who was practicing with some of the soldiers. Hector and a young soldier named Gaius quickly became friends because they were of the same age. Like Hector, Gaius had been training to be a soldier of Rome even before he could walk. He was the son of a soldier and a freed female gladiator. Fighting was in his blood.
"Hey princess maybe it's time you learned to use the pretty dagger I have you." Hector teased.
"Actually that wouldn't be a bad idea." Cato commented when he overheard their conversation. "I'll teach you."
"Um.... okay." Trix could feel her face turning red. He was so much older than her and yet everything about him attracted her. His hair, his eyes, his body, and even the way he spoke. Trix retrieved her dagger with hung from a belt at her waist. She handed it to the dashing general.
"This blade is quite beautiful. Beautiful but also practical." He commented. "Now this is what I want you to do is focus on that trunk. That will be your target. Aim and throw" General Cato then released the dagger that quickly and surely found its mark.
He retrieved it and gave it to Trix.
Trix took a deep breath. She knew where she wanted that dagger to go and she threw it with all her strength. And the hilt hit the tree.
"Great princess, now you've bruised the tree!" Hector teased.
Trix ignored him and went over to pick up the dagger and take a go at it again.
She must have tried more than fifty times when General Cato signaled that it was time to move on. Trix felt so frustrated that she spoke to no one. She simply got on her horse and went with the group.
The general saw her. He ordered his second in command to take the lead and he fell back to ride beside Trix.
It took a while for Trix to realize that the general was riding by her side. When she did she was so startled that she stuttered. "G..General...Sh... Shouldn't you be at the front." She hoped that he did not notice her surprise.
"I cannot lead the party when the nation's future ruler is sad. What bothers you my lady?"
"It's nothing."
"Is it the dagger throwing?"
"How did you know?" Trix asked. She was shocked. Was it obvious that it frustrated her?
"Well for one your attitude turned sour after you tried to embed it in the tree."
"I just need practice I guess." Trix shrugged.
"You can't always be good at everything princess. And it won't hurt you to admit your frustration. Don't worry I'll help you learn."
"Errr. Thanks." Trix blushed.
The general went back to the front of the party. Hector rode up beside her and said. "I do not trust him. Something is amiss."
"You're just jealous Hector." Trix teased.
"I'm serious Trix."
"Oh come on he is a general in the Roman Army. How can he be bad? Plus my parents trusted him to take me back to Rome."
"I guess." Hector replied still not believing in his own words.
They rode on for the rest of the day taking stops every couple of hours so that they may rest and relieve themselves. At every stop Trix would practice with the general while Hector looked on. He did not trust this general with his bestfriend's life.
As the sun set they reached the outskirts of Rome. They would stay at an inn for the night and enter Rome in the morning. As they sat by the table they discussed their plans.
"At dawn we will saddle up and be ready to enter Rome." Cato explained. "Their will be a parade up to the Emperor's palace. One we get there you will be presented to your parents. Please show some affection to them. It will help the Romans truly feel that you are their ruler's daughter."
"I'm not sure how I will react when I meet them." Trix mumbled
"It will be alright child. You will love them. They are amazing people." Artemisia said to comfort her.
"Then you will have a meal with them. Of course your companions will be with you." Cato continued as he pointed at Hector, Juliana, and Artemisia. "Then you will have time to rest before you go in front of the senate. The Emperor will officially name you as his heir."
Trix could feel her heart beating faster. She did not know that so much was involved in her return home. All she knew was that she would be presented to her parents and that's all. Nothing about being proclaimed heir or a parade into the city.
"So does everyone know that I am the heir?" Trix asked.
"All they know it that the Emperor and Empress have a female child that was sent into hiding as a child. They are yet to find out who you are and where you have been." Cato explained.
"Oh alright."
"Next you will ----" Cato tried to continue as Trix cut him off mid speech
"There's more?" Trix asked in surprise.
"Yes Princess. As I was saying next you will return home for a short rest then you will attend a banquet held in your honor."
"Is that all Cato?" Juliana asked.
"Yes my lady." The General replied.
"And who will be attending this banquet?" Juliana asked as she looked at her cup.
"All the senators and their families, Generals, Officials of the government, Nobles. Practically everyone who is anyone."
"I guess we have to polish your manners princess." Hector winked at Trix.
"Is that all general?" Artemisia asked dryly
"Yes ma'am."
"Very well. Let us all retire. We have a busy day ahead of us."
They all then got up and headed into their room. As Trix stood up Juliana stopped her.
"Trix you know that I have treated you as my own child and your safety and well being is my priority."
"I do." Trix replied. "And I am grateful that you and auntie have cared for me all my life even if I was not yours."
"I wish I had had a daughter, but the gods blessed me with only a son. But I do not think I would need a daughter because I had you."
"I'm glad you had Hector. He is one of the few people I trust. And I know that my needs are his priority. It's difficult finding a friend that does not care if you are rich or poor, or if you are beautiful or not. Hector has been that person to me."
"Trix trust me you are beautiful, inside and out."
"Juliana may I ask a sensitive question?"
"What is it my dear?"
"Your family are they still in Rome?"
"Yes. My father is a senator and I was his only child."
"Then wouldn't that make Hector his heir?"
"It would. But I don't think he would accept Hector with open arms."
"Does he know about Hector?"
"Yes. He visited several times in disguise. I only hope he will let us stay at his home while we are at Rome."
A silence then lingered between the two until Juliana asked "How are you feeling Trix?"
"Anxious, nervous, scared. I'm feeling so many emotions at once. I fear that people will hate me and I will be forced to marry a man who wants to simply take the throne."
"Your parents will never do that. They themselves were meant to marry other people."
Trix was shocked. She had expected that the emperor had married whom he had been arranged to marry for a more political reason rather than love.
"Your mother was supposed to marry the former emperor." Juliana continued. "She hated the man and loved his cousin. When her marriage was a week away she and Patricius ran away. The emperor then called them back promising that they could wed."'
Trix was in awe. Who knew her parents were not forced into being with one another.
"Will I am tired. Shall we retire?" Juliana said.
Trix nodded and they headed up to their rooms.

Savi had one of his men act as a drunk man and start fighting with the guards as he sneaked up the stairs and into the hallway above. He had discovered that the girl was in the 4th room to his left.
He made sure to take light steps as not to awaken anyone. They would simply rise in the morning and find the heiress dead, along with their hopes and dreams for the continuation of the dynasty.
He stopped when he heard a sound from one of the rooms.
When he was sure that the person would not awake he continued down the hall to the 4th room. He turned to face it and smiled. This was the moment he was waiting for. His family would be free and the would be out of Rome the next day.
He took out his dagger and held it out ready to kill. He pushed the door open. He saw her wrapped in a blanket on her bed. He thought it was only proper for him to say a few words before carrying out his deed even if no one would hear it.
"Good evening princess. I'm here to send you to Hades where you belong!" He chuckled and drove the knife down at her tiny figure."

Trix had never felt so lucky in her life.
She had snuck out of her room with her dagger in had when she had heard the commotion downstairs. She saw the drunk man fighting with the guards and his companion sneaking up behind them and going up the stairs. At that point she had ran down the hall and hid behind a table near her room.
The stranger had then stopped when one of the men must have moved in his room but did not come out. He continued down the hall till he had reached her room. When he drew out his dagger she knew his intention was to kill her.
She heard his evil words and she saw him thrust the dagger into her pillow that she had covered with her blanket.
He had let out a shout of frustration and threw his dagger at a wall. It woke everyone on their floor. Juliana was the first to the scene. When she saw what the man had done she attacked him as any mother would have. She was followed by some soldiers and the general. The man was well equiped and well trained. He had other weapons concealed on his person.
In a matter of minutes the man's companions started rushing up the stairs. Hector and Artemisia then joined the fight. She saw Hector kill several men. Artemisia who was always the quiet healer attacked with the ferocity of an a****n warrior from the stories she heard as a child.
Then she heard it. Hector screamed as the man who had attempted to kill her had stabbed Juliana.
Trix rushed out of her hiding place and threw her dagger at the assassin. It had hit its mark. The dagger embeded itself into the man's chest.
She ran to Juliana who was fighting to live. Juliana then looked up and saw her and with the last ounce of her life said. "My child you are alive. Thank the gods. I want you and Hector to take care of one another. Promise me."
The both promised and Juliana took her last breath and died in her son's arms.
Vitatrix was not able to sleep that night. Cato had told her to get some rest before they departed. They immediately buried Juliana's body after the fight. Artemisia held her tight as she kept fighting the tears. Juliana had cared for her just as Artemisia had. She had two mothers growing up and she had lost one. More than anything Trix was worried about Hector. His mother meant everything to him. He barely saw his father and without his mother the closest family he had was his grandfather, the Roman senator Julian. Would the senator accept her friend? He was after all his sole heir. They had buried Juliana in the forest that night. Offerings and prayers had been made. This was no way to put to rest a daughter of a Roman Senator, but they had to make haste. If they did no leave by the next day their enemies could gather their supporters and attack once more.
Trix and Hector waited nervously for the emperor to speak. The soldiers had returned to their barracks and Artemisia was led by a servant to her chambers."Hector" the emperor began "first I would like to thank you for being a fierce protector and friend of my daughter. Artemisia would write to us about you. Although I had no idea that you were Juliana's son.""Her death breaks my heart. We were friends. We grew up together. Well she was first engaged to Patricius." The empress said gravely. This came as a shock to both Hector and Trix. If the couples had not defied their parents both of them would not exist."The last time I spoke to Juliana we were planning on marrying our children to each other." Eliana chuckled as she saw th
A large feast was held in honor of Trix's declaration as heir. Drink and food flowed freely and all the nobles presented gifts to her, which had been brought up to her chambers by her slaves. She looked over at the crowd from her seat of honor and saw Hector. He was speaking to a woman, the woman was much older than him and yet it did not deter her from flirting with the young boy. Tix felt herself go green with envy. "Daughter." She was snapped out of her thoughts "Why don't you dance with Brutus? He is the younger brother of General Cato and he is himself rising among the ranks of the army." Trix nodded at Eliana and took Brutus' hand. He led her to the center of the hall. As they danced she got a glimpse of Hector and his new lady friend. It seemed as though he was flirting back. She turned her attention back to the dance. "My lady it is quite an honor to meet you." Brutus said as he spun her. "I am still at shock with the world I am suddenly in."
Trix rose early before dawn. Her meal was already waiting at the table and her maids were running around her chambers to prepare what she was to wear. She struggled to get out of bed. She wasn't used to getting up this early. She ate, got dressed, and headed out the door with her maids and guards in tow. The training grounds were behind the palace. It was a wide open space which allowed the soldiers ample space to practice combat and archery. A small building was on the side where they could practice fighting within tight spaces. As Trix and her companions entered the grounds the soldiers formed into their ranks and fell to their knees. At the front was Hector and General Cato. She gestured them to rise and Hector offered his arm to her. They walked side by side with General Cato who then instructed them on their routine. "Every morning, at the break of dawn you will first run around the palace. The emperor was strict about you
They had arrived at the home of Senator Marcius and his wife, lady Livia, for the celebration of he birth of their son Regulus. The party was a great affair. Wine flowed freely and the food was rich and bountiful. The Lady Livia was a distant cousin of the royal family and with the birth of her son, Regulus, presented a contender to the throne. The Senator, his wife, and his aging father had come out of their villa to meet the royal family. To their surprise a young man accompanied the royals. Hector was introduced to them as Senator Julian's grandson and heir.Hector was amazed with the attention given to him despite the royal family's presence. Men and women came up to offer their condolences on his mother's death. As per tradition the men were served wine and the women grape juice. Rich food was served. Pork and beef with fruits and bread. No expense was spared at the birth of the Senator's first son.Hector sat with some young men who had welco
Trix was in her room waiting for the doctors. As soon as she recalled everything she told Hector and her parents. But there was still a part of her memory missing. She couldn't remember the day she was kidnapped. Everything about it was a blur. They had returned to the palace and the memory of Juliana's death lingered still fresh in her memory. They had only returned home moments ago. After Juliana's body was retrieved the procession continued out of the city to a large and extravagant burial grounds. It had been owned by the family of Julian for generations and was practically habitable. There were dining areas and stables. There was even a summer home at the edge of the grounds. Juliana's body was cremated at the ustrinae and later on placed in an urn. After prayers were said and offerings made she was interned next to her mother who had died ten years before. The ride back was silent
Trix continued to evaluate her surroundings. She looked up through the opening of the well. It must have been at least fifteen feet above her. It was dark and all she could see was the stars in the heavens above. Suddenly she noticed a faint glow. It must have been a fire. She was about to call out when she realized that it was quite possible that her captors had not left and was guarding against the possibility of her escape. She felt like breaking down into tears. Why would anyone want to capture her? She could think of three obvious reasons. The first was they were after her father and his position as emperor. The second could be to hold her for ransom. The wealth of her family was no secret. If anyone was desperate enough it would be a logical choice to kidnap her. And the third was they wanted to compromise the emperor's lineage.
As they arrived in the Villa they spotted the Emperor and Empress awaiting their return. They had sent a messenger ahead to tell them that their daughter was safe. The walk back to the Villa was uneventful and peaceful. Especially compared to the past few days. Hector had only lost his mother a week before and he was worried that he would also lose his best friend to the same sinister men that deprived him of a mother. He would avenge her someday, he promised. And when he did he will find everyone responsible. Trix was his only family left and he would not ever lose her to those people again. As they arrived Trix was still weak. A servant came up and offered them some drink. Trix gladly accepted it and drank everything up. Hector refused the drink as he was still holding Trix in his arms. The emperor would not trust anyone with his daug
Hector ordered for the nation's top spies to report to him that night. They had agreed that a larger force would not be practical, nor would it make sense to attack with put confirming that Trix was indeed being held captive in Felix's villa."Seeing as everyone is now here this is your mission, we will march out before dawn and camp in the woods behind the villa." Hector explained pointing at the map on the table. "From there the spies will advance first to confirm if the empress is indeed being kept captive there and if she is still within the grounds. We will all be dressed discreetly. The forge has made a new light weight armor that we can test out, it should be well hidden under our cloaks and disguises."The men all nodded in understanding."Expect the place to be
Hector marched into the hall where the senators and other leaders of Rome had gathered. Two weeks had passed since the attempted rebellion of Gaius and Marcus where Trix had disappeared. The senators were in a frenzy, they still believed that Trix was on a military tour. They began to worry, the reign of the empress was young and very susceptible to people who wish to take over the empire themselves. Many were pressing for Trix to wed in order to show a stronger front. Hector debated with many of them explaining that this would only show their lack of confidence in their empress. Vitatrix may be a woman but she was proving to her people that women were not weak. After the attempt no other unrest outside of the ordinary was reported. It was as if Marcus and his men had vanished. Gaius had been killed in the fight and his son was making right his father's mistake. Not surprisingly C
Trix stood frozen between Jacob and her aunt. She knew Jacob had heard what Aria had called her. How foolish of them to let their guard down."We will discuss this later Jacob." Trix whispered."If you are who she says you are then you must get out of here." Jacob said."Not without everyone being safe. If I escape they will use this as leverage." She explained."Silence!" Marcus commanded. "As you see there is no empress, her future consort is my prisoner, I told captive majority of nobles in Rome. So now you will have over the crown to me.""The empress will return." A man in the crowd shouted."Sh
"Are you ready?" Jacob asked straightening out his tunic."Almost. Give me a moment." Trix called out. She had worn a simple cream colored dress with a red belt. She had chosen to wear something simpler over the violet dress Aria had offered for her to use."Who do you think will be coming to the party?" Jacob asked."Most probably every noble in Rome. This is Lord Felix we are talking about. He is good friends with the empress and it would not hurt to be on his good side." Trix walked out from behind the screen dressed and ready. "That is why I must remain simple. If someone recognizes me our mission will surely end tonight.""You look amazing." Was all Jacob managed to say as he looked at his pretend wife.Trix blushed and smiled sweetly at him. "Well we must get going. It would be a shame to miss all the events tonight."Jacob nodded and offered his arm to her. She gladly took it and they made their way to the banquet hall. The hall was brightly lit with nobles from across the empi
Trix was worried at Felix's reaction. She knew that if Gaius was aware of her presence in his home, she will be used to gain the throne. "Sir, you have me confused with the empress. I merely look like her." Trix managed to say. She watched as Felix glared at her, clearly not convinced on the fact that only a double stood in front of him at that moment. "Very interesting." Felix said looking her over. "Aaron, I mean Jacob, it has been quite a while. I had my men look for you all over the city." "Sir I felt like a burden living in your villa. I chose to find my way." Jacob reasoned clearly ashamed by what he had done. "None the less I still open my doors to you and your wife. Live on my land as a friend. Although I think you've foun
Trix could not believe what she was hearing. Lord Felix was arranging his marriage to Gaius daughter, a woman clearly of much lower rank than him. It was uncharacteristic."I would be honored my lord for such a union to occur." Lord Gaius said with a grin. "It most definitively would further strengthen our plans.""What plans?" Felix asked the older man."My plans for my children sir." Gaius said quickly covering up what he had let slip, leaving Trix much more confused than ever."Ah, a father good must indeed look after his kin. Tell me sir when might I meet your daughter?" Felix asked."We could arrange for a small gatherin
Trix silently made her way through the halls to the library she needed a way to see if her friend Felix was behind all these plans, and she knew someone that could help."Niece, how are you?"the Lady Aria greeted her as she entered the library."Your husband is complicating my plans."Trix said as she collapsed on a couch."To him we are nothing but our husband's property." Her aunt shook her head."He has hired a tutor to educate me." Trix explained. "The tutor will figure out that I am educated.""This is a dilemma." Aria said. "Worry not, I shall find someone we can trust."Trix nodded and forced herself to trust this
"Was your day fruitful?" Jacob asked as he entered their room.Trix looked up and smiled at him."I guess it was then. What did you do today Krista?" He asked as he set his daggers aside."I met a new friend." Trix said with a large grin on her face."Why am I worried about this new friend of yours?" Jacob asked."Her name is Lady Aria, wife to nobleman Gaius." At this Trix winked towards Jacob's direction."And did you tell her who you were?""Wife to one of Gaius' men. She isn't as dumb as they think Jacob." Krista said."No one
"You know who I am?" Vitatrix asked as she stood nervously across the room from the noblewoman.Aria nodded and smiled. "Don't worry Gaius has no clue. Just as he is clueless to the fact that I am loyal to the house of Cesar."Vitatrix cautiously moved closer yo Aria. "How do I know that your words are true?" She asked."Because I am from the same house you are from. Sister to the man you called your father." Aria revealed leaving Trix in shock."If he was your sister then people would know. And being my closest of kin you would benefit from my death." Trix bluntly said."True, but I ran away from home to get away from all that mess. I wanted a peacful and comfortable life and this i
