I could just keep on walking. Pretend like I didn’t hear her voice past others talking but everyone had practically gone silent and were either watching us, or had gone back to work. I spun on my heel to face her.

“Oh! you can’t believe my surprise when O’Malley said you called, ready to resume. The thought of me almost drowning filled my head and I flinched when Tami touched me.

I could not tell if she had noticed it and she was ignoring it because she squeezed me into a hug. Lucky it was over quickly.

“How are you? How is the…”

The child I was carrying for your possible husband? “Great. She’s doing great.”

I could not have imagined the look that flashed across her face, could I?

She smiled, “it was such an unfortunate incident, I can’t help but blame myself, I should’ve done better as the AD. I owe you my heartfelt apologies.”

“Oh don’t be silly miss Baker, it was an accident.” One of the workers spoke up.

“Yeah, sometimes you make plans and life makes its own.” A woman added, bef

“What’s your favorite snack?” I questioned Derek before I got in the car.“Just a chocolate covered donut.”“Really?”“Yes miss, I’m a simple man. Why’d you ask?”“Oh, nothing!” I answered sweetly, “i would like us to make a stop though.Forty minutes later I headed out of my favorite cafe with three small bags. After another stop at a grocery store, I pulled out my box of chocolate covered donuts to munch on as Derek drove me home, humming as I ate.“This feels like some kind of punishment.” He said with an amused smile that I spied through the rearview mirror.“Punishment? Why? I’m just enjoying this very delicious box of chocolate soaked donuts, they taste amazing by the way.”He chuckled. “You ratted me out.” “It’s part of my job. Plus it wouldn’t have happened if you where just straight up with me.”“I apologized!”“After.”“Fine.”I grabbed the second bag and placed it in the passenger seat. “Your apology for snitching is accepted.”“I didn’t offer any.”“Do you want me to tak

I held my sister’s gaze. “You know that right? If he loved you, he wouldn’t try to keep you from your family, he wouldn't treat you like you’re some…” she sighed again. “I don’t want you to be like mum.”“What?” “I don’t want you to be like mum.” She said more fervently. “No, Lily, he's not like that. He has NEVER raised his hand to me.” And no matter his temper, I knew in my heart that he would never.“And I’m not mum. I won’t stay with a man that hurts me like that. Especially with a baby.”She looked like she wanted to say more but stopped herself. “Lucky you, you have a sensible sister to call you out when you’re being insane.”“Very lucky me.” I squeezed her hand. “I’m visiting mum tomorrow.” I said tentatively. “Do you wanna…”“No, I told you already, I’m not coming, I think you should stay back too.”“I can’t. She’ll be expecting us.” Lily nodded. “I heard something about spicy cheesy tots?” I gestured to it, and she slid it into the room while I chuckled.I was positively

“Hey Derek!” I had on a beautiful flowery dress that screamed sunshine, cupcakes and life is magical. I was a bit overdressed for my visit to mum but I needed to force the optimism from outside into me.“Good morning miss.” He greeted back, sticking his fidget toy back into his pocket as he rose. “Are we going to the park today?” He asked, peering at me from his dark shades. I chuckled.“No parks today. I handed him my phone.”Hospital. Is this another sealed off movie set?” “No, it’s just a hospital. I promise you, no more tricks from my end.” He nodded and opened the car door for me. I snuck one last peek at my sister’s bedroom window. I caught a glimpse of her just before she hid behind the blinds.‘Please don’t make me go alone’, I prayed as I watched her window.“Go right in, miss.” Derek urged.Lily’s blind opened and she gave me a small goodbye wave. Today was going to be a solo trip for me then. I climbed in and waited for Derek to do the same. The car purred to life and

When I woke up that morning, I remained still and forced every happy memory I’ve ever had of my mum to my head. Today I did not need to be on set, which meant I had all day to wallow in bed, or play ’happy’ with my sister and tell her mum did great. But if I told her that mum was great it would make her believe that mum was like that because she wasn’t there. I let out a sigh and rolled to my side, folding my legs into a fetal position. A small knock on my door, had me cranking my neck. The door opened an inch and Lily poked her head in. “You don’t lock your door?”Force of habit from when we were small. Locking the doors meant it would take longer for me to reach mum incase of danger. And it infuriated dad, when he was moving around and doors ‘refused’ to work.“Yeah.” I whispered. She slipped in and shut it. Was this the part I told her how my visit went?“I’m heading out.” Lily said, halting my thoughts.“To where?”“A couple of my classmates are meeting up. Could be fun.”“Okay

“Visit?” Thoughts of Pierce’s skillful hands fled my mind and I was brought back to the present. “Yeah.” Pierce continued, “The one you paid to your mum? You seemed upset by it yesterday, and you came back late. The reason you live here is so I can keep an eye on you and ensure the safety of my child. Your unreliable schedule isn’t helpful.“ “I was with my mother.” I did not think I needed to explain myself further. “And you came back looking like you lost a pet, what happened? Is she good?”Several months ago I would be preening from this attention he was giving me. Now, I shifted uncomfortably on the counter. “Everything’s fine, my emotions have been all over the place since the baby.”We had to stay on common ground. Although considering we were going to have a baby between us, knowing more about each other’s family seemed smart. “Is it dementia?” He queried.“Alzheimer’s, PTSD, chronic pain…”“PTSD?”“Yeah, my da-“ it occurred to me that I was crossing a line. “Yeah, PTSD.”

Angie was back the next day like Pierce said she would be. And I did not have to deal with him that morning, thank God. “I might have missed you a little bit.” I confessed to Angie as I leaned on the counters with my elbow. I purposely avoided the stool Pierce had used. Angie didn’t seem to buy it, but she put four slices of frittatas on my plate, topped it up with parsley and dropped it in front of me. “That’s a lot of food.”“You need it to grow a baby.” She said simply as she reached into the fridge. Why was everyone obsessing over the size of my kid? “Is that gelato?” I gasped, when she pulled out a long plastic plate.“Yes, home made.”“I thought you hated gelato.”“I never said that.” I had a teasing expression on my face as she put a scoop of it in a small glass bowl. “Eat your food, you have your appointment in two hours.”Back down to reality. “Yes ma’am.” Angie removed a bottle of ketchup from the fridge and dropped on the counter. “No I don't want it.” I could not s

Lily plopped onto her bed and looked up at me inquisitively.“Gimme a sec.” I muttered, handing the bag over to her. “You can start without me.”I left her room and went into mine before I accepted the call. “Hello?”“Good afternoon, This is Paul from Peaceful Pines, am I speaking to miss Myra Thompson?” The male on the other side of my call asked brightly.“That’s me.” he sounded almost cheerful, it would be safe to assume he wasn’t delivering bad news sounding like barney’s distant cousin. “Is my mum okay?” I asked, just in case.“Yes, she’s doing great I hear.” I let out the breath I was holding. “I called for a different reason.”“Yeah, what is it?” I hope they were not planning to increase the fees or something. Maybe he wanted to advertise a premium plan.“We got a call earlier today from your representative. He made enquiries about a transfer for your mother. I wondered if I had been yelling again. On closer examination I realized she had a single glass cup and some pills in the plate.“Your meds,” she said simply.“Later Angie.” “I think you’ll take them now.” she affirmed as she entered the room completely, her footsteps coming to a halt beside me. I eyed the older woman before I grabbed the pills and the glass. .When I placed the empty cup back on the plate, I thought I caught Angie glaring at Pierce, but I was probably mistaken. I waited till she was gone before I turned to Pierce again. He was staring at me already with a strange expression on his face.“You insult me when I take your money and still do it when I don’t.” “Because I can see through your false modesty. He had the guts to look at me like I was the problem in this situation. His bushy brows were furrowed as he scowled, his eyes showing equal parts of desire and annoyance. Ditto.“Going out with Hannah?” He questioned. “This isn’t your usual filming getup.“Well excuse me, fashion police, but you need to get out of my house!” He looked at my face finally, then around the house like cockroaches were crawling all over the place. “Really Myra? This? This is what you settled on finally? It’s a dump. Why didn’t you take the apartment I offered?”“And be indebted to you even more? No fucking thank you.” It felt so hot in the house. I had Pierce to blame for that. He was only standing by the doorway, but he managed to fill the room so far all I could see was him, all I could smell was him, all I could think for crying out loud was him! I wanted him gone. “Now if you would be kind enough…LEAVE.”“You can’t be serious Myra.” He started, moving into the room further. “did you even have a look a

I typed the name into google, having never heard the name before. Scrolling and reading while I peeled another pepperoni slice off my pizza. The mythological wife of Yahweh according to the Canaanite pantheon. Mother of sacred trees…Erased from history like most divine females. I slowed my chewing till it came to a halt. That last bit sounded familiar.A notification from Carter popped up on my screen. I opened it.-I understand that it could be taken the wrong way. But I consider her a powerful deity. Queen of the heavens. I think looking at you feels like I’m looking at the sky. Trevor emerged from beside the cars lined in the lot in a tailored armani suit. A simple engraved stainless steel brooch on his collared vest. Forever the stylish icon. “Miss Myra. You look good.” He gave a quick appraisal of my clothes.“Good to see you too Trevor.” I said, not slowing my pace. “I would ask if you missed me but I can guess why you’re here.”“Doing Mr Blackwood's dirty work obviously, now could you make my life easier and wait?”I stopped and crossed my hand over my chest and waited for him to catch up to me. “Was Pierce here today?” I did see someone watching us while we filmed, I couldn’t have imagined a whole human being no matter how bothered I was by him.He crossed his own hands in a similar fashion. “Do you really want me to answer that?”“Yes.”“Alright. He left the office- after acting like piss, I might add- then he returned even more pissy and handed me back the documents he had me painstakingly work on, and told me to meet you here.”“So yes?” That meant

I moved back, my eyes glued on Roberto as he stalked me with a wild look in his eyes. My legs hit the edge of the bedframe and I let myself fall back just as he reached for me. He creeped up my body slowly, hovering over my lips. I crashed my lips onto his a split second later. Here, at this moment, I wasn’t Myra. I was Amber Farnworth, a woman who had a harem of men at her beck and call. She didn’t love a man for over four years without him reciprocating, or lose a child.I twisted my head to the side to evade Roberto’s lips and he buried kisses in my neck. A simple movement caught my eye. Past the camera pointed on us on the bed, past the other stage crew or actors…Pierce? My heart skipped, filling me with more need than I could summon for this scene. Could it be him? I wasn’t sure. A cast member shifted slightly and when they returned back to their former position the figure was gone.“Myra, don’t break the fourth wall.” O’Malley called through the mega phone and Roberto sighed in

Hannah helped me lift the last of my things up the stairs to my new apartment. “So you like him?” Hannah asked as we rested at the top of the stairs. I had explained Carter’s words on an attempt to sort through what I was feeling. I didn’t know what it was. I chucked it up to guilt for treating him the same way Pierce treated me; assuming the worst of me. “I don’t like him. I’m just…conflicted.” Don’t get defensive, it’s not bad if you do like him.” I let out an exasperated sigh. “I just lost a child Hannah, not to mention the breakup with Pierce. I can’t ‘like’ anyone right now.” We picked up the bean bag and waddled all the way to my apartment. Heaving as we dropped the bag in the center of the living room. “God you should’ve asked Derek to help.” “Nope.” I answered, collapsing on the bag. As he drive me home after the sordid affair in the parking lot, he informed me that he was quitting. Derek was a good guy, and I would miss his company, but this gave us an opportun

“This looks rather cozy.” I said, stepping a step back and hitting Carter. His hands went around my waist to steady me. “It does? I didn’t notice.” There was a hint of laughter in his voice. When I glanced up, he was smiling at me. “I hear they have good food. We grab a bite and then we leave, it isn’t a big deal.” He cocked his head to the side, “not unless you make it.”“No it’s fine.” I stepped away from him, relieved that his hands freed me easily. I wasn’t even dressed for that kind of thing. I looked out of place here and I liked it that way. A server stopped by us with a smile and spoke to Carter while I hung in the background. When they were done speaking, he led me to a booth not far from the entrance. A smart choice since it eliminated the cozy feel.“So do you checkout new restaurants often?” I asked after we had been given menus. The crinkles in his eyes deepened. “I do, actually. Jace has acting as a hobby and I fancy myself some kind of food critic.” I raised a brow. “T

“O’Malley is certainly working us to death.” Jace said as he collapsed on the ground in the part of the woods we were shooting. I was wearing a sleeveless shirt and would rather avoid the sand totally, but was too exhausted to mind. I joined him on the floor, resting my head on his belly. Sophia, Bianca, Roberto and the others joined us on the floor or rested their backs against the trees.“How’s your play date with your brother going?” I asked Jace.I felt him shift under me. “Perfect. We are supposed to have one today actually.”“Is it cancelled?” A little part of me wanted to see Carter. Roberto saying he was flirting with me had forced the idea i to my head and it wouldn’t leave. Was I really so stuck up on Pierce that I couldn’t tell when a guy was openly flirting with me?“I’m trying to figure out how to cancel.”“You don’t want to join your family’s company.”“I’m just not ready for that part of my life yet. I chewed on my lip and glanced back at the set. “I’ll have to decline. O’Malley’s is in the zone right now and could call me and Roberto anytime soon, I don’t wanna go AWOL on him.”Carter nodded sharply, his smile still bright and disarming. “Of course, I understand. Can’t steal the star of the show without warning. Maybe next time?”“For sure.” I smiled back. It felt good to smile.“See you around, Myra.” He gave a small salute in Roberto’s direction and walked away, my eyes still trainedbon his figure. I thought about how different he was from Pierce, with the charming easy smiles and calming demeanor. Carter still kept this boyish high school vibe, and he made it work.“Now that is how a rich man flirts.” Robert said. He had placed his hands behind his head and was smirking at me. The fabric of his shirt had gone up, exposing an inch of skin. I peeled my eyes away from there and focused on his words.“Flirting?”“Oh yeah.” I scoffed, “he wasn’t flirting with me, he’s just really

I stood at the hospital reception desk, my eyes fixed on the woman typing away on her computer. "Room or common room?" I asked, forcing my voice to be louder than it could go.She scrolled through the screen, her brow furrowed in concentration. "She's in her room today. She wanted to stay in bed."I nodded, settling back into the dull ache in my chest. I trudged up the stairs, and as I reached my mother's room, pushed open the door and stepped inside. It was dimly lit, I noticed a live plant in her room with wilting leaves. My mother sat in a chair, her legs swathed in a vibrant blanket with small flowery squares that I recognised as the project she had been working on. My lips tugged upwards briefly and my heart swelled. At least one of us was able to finish what we started.I swallowed hard, trying to hold back the tears that threatened to spill over. When I breathed out, it felt easier.“That looks gorgeous, mum.” I commented, and planted a kiss on the top of her hair. “You finally
