Chapter 10

DONOVAN

When I drove out as they asked me to, I didn't know where we were going. Besides, my mind wasn't steady. I stopped barely passing through the gate. 

“I'd like my driver to drive us. I'm not in the right frame of mind.” I relayed to them. 

“We aren't going there with a third party. Remember you were expected to keep your identity a secret till you assume the seat, why should you bring a driver along who can leak your message?” 

“But I'm so tired and unwilling.” I complained. “I wouldn't want to get into an accident.” 

“Don't worry, come out. Let me drive.” My uncle volunteered. I heaved in relief but when I looked back a distance away where my estate lies, my thoughts returned to Maya. I let my aunt come over to sit with her mate while I went to the backseat even though she tried to insist. 

The drive was about two hours, I slept and woke up, at least twice before we finally arrived. 

“I never knew the distance was this long?” I grumbled at my aunt. 

“Look, it's almost two hours since we left the estate,” I complained further. 

“Two hours?” I heard my aunt growl in denial. “What's two hours?” She smirked, clapping her hands. “The journey took only forty-five minutes.” 

“What? Why am I feeling it's up to two hours?” 

“I've told you not to date anyone who comes your way, look how weak and confused you are now?” She smirked, pointing her fingers at me with disgust. The door of the car here at the back seemed to be opened and all of a sudden, people were coming out to greet them. 

For years now, I have been focused on my teaching profession, getting me into a business deal when I don't even know what went on would absolutely make me look like a fool before the girl they would be introducing me to. 

What can I do? I have to compose myself. 

I got out of the car and together we walked towards the mansion which was set up in front of us. I couldn't steady my mind, I had to look through my phone, Maya had called. If possible, she must have sent a text. 

“Are you alright?” She asked. 

“Yes,” I quickly typed. Her clinginess was getting obvious. Upon answering her text, I slid the phone into my pocket. 

My aunt took the lead. Bianca was always taking the lead, Leo, her husband behind to support her. I followed them. Inside of me I was wondering why the daughter of the royal Beta would leave her parents to live here, in this city. 

Were they kind of spying on me without me knowing? 

“Welcome ma’am, sir and–” A young woman in a fitting red dress greeted, her face beaming with smiles until she set eyes on me. 

“Huhh?” I shifted back, watching her stare at me with lips slightly parted. What's it? 

“Wel-come–” She couldn't even say it out clearly but stammered. 

“Yeh–hh. Nice meeting you.” I forced out a straight face, behaving formally. 

“Can't you see that she's already falling for you?” Bianca teased, I blinked to suppress the reaction my face was already building. I didn't want it to look like something we already discussed. 

I chuckled very low. 

We walked inside of the house. I was thinking of seeing her parents or an elderly member of the family, since her parents were still alive, she couldn't be the one running the family business. Maids and servants rallied around. 

“Erica, wow. You're now a grown woman, ripe for marriage. A suitor is already here.” She turned her eyes to me, then I had to grab this nice opportunity. 

“What about the business deal we came here to do?” 

“Ohhh, that's what you're here for?” Erica responded, sounding quite surprised. 

“Don't mind him, he came to see you.” Bianca snapped. It occurred that both of us were now staring at each other with shock. I took my hand to the back of my head, scattering my hair in confusion but I needed to take my stance. 

“Sorry Erica, I accompanied them for a business deal, so if it's not going to happen again, please excuse me.” I stood up to go but Leo stopped me. 

“Where are you heading to, did you come with your personal car?” 

“I'll take the cab,” I replied. 

“Please sit. We came together, we're going back together too.” Bianca added. 

From pleasantries, we proceeded to have a light meal with some drinks prepared by her chef. Bianca and Leo soon left to the background, guessing they would be heading to the pool where they could stay to relax, deep down, I knew this isn't what they wanted. 

They wanted Erica and I alone. 

The silence was getting awkward, she was too stunned to talk to me, I grinned lip-tight. “I heard you're a medical doctor?” I started. 

“Yea–ahh.”

“Yes, I am.” She nodded. 

“That's great.” I shrugged my shoulders with a nod. “Why did my aunt and uncle come to visit you, I was thinking your parents would be here as well and they would be saying something business?” 

“No, they didn't say anything about business with me but about me starting a new job.” My eyelids lowered. 

“A new job? Don't you have one already?” 

“Well, to start a new job as a personal doctor, as your doctor.” 

I shuddered, my heart dropping low with a swift tension. Confusion swam over me and I was all-round disturbed, feeling that she would be feeling bad over my reaction, I forced a smile. 

“Sorry Erica but I don't think I need a personal doctor. A good hospital is close to wherever I live, besides I don't get sick. I go for a comprehensive medical check up every time.” 

While we were speaking, my aunt walked in, Leo following behind her. “See how you guys are doing well.” 

“What?” I pretended not to hear. 

Slowly, Erica was coming closer to me, her eyes glowing with desire at the same time she was nervous. I kept shifting slightly, I wasn't ready to get seduced. It came to a point I couldn't handle this manipulation, I rose up. 

“Will see you some other time. I have something to do today.” With this, I stood up and left. Bianca and Leo couldn't stop me this time around, I walked straight to the road where I hailed a taxi. 

Inside of here, I placed a call on Maya. “Hello,” I said as she picked the call. 

“Yes.” 

“I'll be returning soon, to the estate.” 

“Ooh, I can't wait.” She was going to say something else but I cut the call. With who I am, I realized that if I get too familiar with people, there would be no respect left for me. Besides, I wasn't ready to be any girl's main man yet. 

The taxi took me back to my estate where I went back to my apartment, got to undress and was about to see my daughter. I didn't know where Maya was, it seems she's getting too clingy, so I wanted to avoid her a bit. 

“Where are you going, Donovan?” Her voice rang from the hallway, behind me. I stopped, not turning back. 

“I want to see my daughter,” I growled. 

“Without me?” 

I smirked at her response. “I don't need to always stress you.” The truth is I didn't want her to come, I like her though but still wanted to keep my distance. 

Maya grabbed my hand and followed me to the nursery, insisting she wanted to see Vikky. Merely seeing her, Vikky ran and jumped on her. “Aunty, you're here?” She was so excited as Maya grabbed her. I watched them silently amused, caressing Vikky’s back. 

“Dad, you brought my new mom?” 

I chuckled. “She's not your new mom.” Maya turned to look at me with big, side eyes. I flinched, hiding my grin. 

“What game do you want to play? Let's go to the park.” 

“I really want to spend time with her.” She replied. “Can she be my nanny please?” 

“Just for today. She already has lots of walking to do.” 

With this, we left for the pack. My thoughts weren't at rest, the way things were going, I was imagining what to tell mom and dad, for sure they were going to call me. My aunt and uncle would surely tell them I left. 

My mind went off as Maya played with Vikky, she shook me, flying her hand over my face. “Don't you like my presence, why are you not joining us?” She asked.

My face twisted into a knot and the words in my mind, I was spitting it out carelessly without thinking. “I don't like someone being so clingy with me. We can't be together. It's impossible after Christmas. Don't take your mind too far.” 

“What?” Her puzzled gasp made me realize what I just said. 

“Hell no,” I flipped my fingers. “Sorry about that, it's a flip of the tongue but I'm serious as well.” 

She folded her lips, her face sad. “Hey baby, I'm coming back now. Just stay here and wait for me.” She patted her head and left right away. When Vikky looked at me, I grinned. 

“Let me escort your mom, I'm coming back soon. Just play and don't worry.” I patted her head and left. 

I rushed after Maya, meeting up with her at the garden where she sat on one of the benches, sobbing. Slowly, I draped my hand over her. She raised her face filled with tears, seeing it was me, she pushed me off. 

“Stay away from me. You don't want to love me, you don't want me to be with you.” Her voice was all crackly, my heart warmed up with so much sympathy, I was beginning to blame myself for being so harsh with my words but I wasn't so conscious of myself then. 

“I'm so sorry for what I said.” 

“There's no need to. I'm gonna learn to stop loving you.” 

“What?” I rushed to her, draping her hand over her tightly. I leaned towards her face, giving her a hickey. 

“Please don't give up on me. I'm so sorry, I never received love from a woman. I'm just feeling–” 

As I said this, I watched her relax herself for me to touch her. My hands trailed over her boobs, my face crushing hard on hers. I kissed her. Her body was beginning to sway, her hormones were rising. I grinned. 

“I can't control myself whenever I'm with you, I just wished you could–” 

Then I sealed my lips with her, kissing her so hard. This wasn't the right place to do this. But I'll do it with her, my body was beginning to create ripples.
