Violetta
In one swift move, he picked me up and tossed me back on the bed. Wincing at the pain, I dropped my gaze. There was no escape. Choosing a different tactic, I cleared my throat. "I apologize, Alpha. How can I be of service to you?"
With a growl, he settled in the chair on the other side. It was almost comical to watch him fit his large body in the small armchair. With a frown, he picked up the crowbar and studied it before letting it fall back to the floor.
"I am not here to take what's mine, so relax," he growled.
Take what was his. I tried not to wince. It was true that I was his mate. That gave him plenty of power over me, power he'd never wielded. If he wanted to bed me, he would have done it before now. That gave me a little bit of peace, so I readjusted myself on the bed so I was more comfortable and tried not to stare at the dresser that was blocking my path.
"For three years, I've left you alone. Given you a place to live. Let you do whatever you wanted so long as you didn't try to escape or cause trouble."
"Look, what happened tonight..."
"I know exactly what happened tonight," he cut in sharply. "Don't interrupt me again."
Inside me, my wolf howled mournfully. I'd upset our mate. Closing my eyes, I tried to push her down. Try as I might, I still couldn't talk her out of this stupid mate bond. I didn't really know how wolves chose their mates, but she'd picked a terrible one. As far as I knew, there was no way to change the mating, but that didn't stop me from trying. Obviously, my wolf had lost her mind.
He didn't want an apology, so I didn't give it. I just waited to see what the hell he wanted.
"I think it's time we talk about what you owe this pack. What you owe me."
My veins ran cold, and for the first time, I met his gaze head-on. My wolf dove deep inside of me until all I could feel was her fear, but I didn't let her control me. Ferrara's words echoed another's.
My father's.
He nearly killed me. If Ferrara wanted something from me, he was going to discover that I wasn't just going to roll over and give it to him. Not this time.
"My father's crimes are not mine," I said steadfastly.
"Once again, I point out where you are. Did I not rescue you from him? I could have killed you that night. There are those who questioned my leadership for not ending your life.
Instead, I gave you a chance here."
"I earned my keep. Confections bar is your most profitable restaurant. Parker said so. Do you think he did that? He spent most of his time drinking with the customers. You think Charlie does that? He spends his days tormenting me and riling up everyone else to torment me. I came up with the new menu. I called the distributors. I marketed this place, and I'm the one who does all the paperwork. I don't get a paycheck, and now I don't get to keep my tips. I've worked from open to close every single day since you put Charlie in charge. I owe you nothing."
Ferrara raised an eyebrow, but I didn't stop. I was done being a tool. "You don't want me here? I am more than happy to leave. You want something from me? Don't play games. Just tell me."
"Parker complained relentlessly about that mouth of yours. I guess you've grown a spine."
There was that strange ache again. Odd that I would miss someone.
"I haven't grown anything. You just didn't bother to get to know anything about me before you abandoned me here. What do you want?"
"Tell me about Wisteria Wood."
The bluster went out of me, and I jerked my gaze to the floor.
Violetta, you have to run. Right now.
Shit.
"I've heard of the name...."
"Don't bullshit me, Violetta, or you'll discover just how fucking merciful I've been," he growled. "I know you disappeared from your father for six months. He left a trail of bodies trying to get you back, some of them mine. Wolves I was supposed to protect. I also know that he retrieved you from Wisteria Wood. You will tell me what you know."
Ferrara hadn't shown up because of an alarm or because of reports that I was trying to escape. He'd already been on his way here. That was the only explanation on how he'd gotten here so fast.
He'd been on his way here, at four o'clock in the morning, to wake me up and grill me on Wisteria Wood. That meant whatever Ferrara wanted from Wisteria Wood, it was damn important.
"Wisteria Wood is home to the most powerful coven in the region, the Darkwyn coven.
There are no roads big enough for vehicles. Rogue shifters call Wisteria Woods home, at least those powerful enough to survive the magic seeped into the trees and ground. The witches let them live because they make it impossible for anyone stupid enough to try to get there. My father was a killer and a liar. If he said he found me in Wisteria Wood, it was to serve his own needs."
"He's not my only source of information."
Great. So either Ferrara had been working for a while on getting as much information as he could about Wisteria Wood, or the few who knew I'd been there blabbed their mouths.
Neither of those options was good for me. The last thing I needed was every wolf to know I could get them to Wisteria Wood.
Most packs housed one solitary witch. Any more than that, and the pack became a turf war. There wasn't a huge need for witches. At least, not anymore since most of the packs were at peace. Because of that, shifters didn't bother traversing through Wisteria Wood.
Only witches wanted to get to Darkwyn coven.
The world was full of magic. Most suspected that magic to be the source of shifters themselves, but witches closely guarded magic. Some of the solitary ones were attached to packs and clans. Symbiotic protection. Some tried to disappear into the human world, but the most powerful witches were isolated in impossible-to-reach compounds.
Darkwyn coven was the only witch compound on this side of Shadowed Moon. They were reportedly incredibly powerful.
"Being alpha to the biggest pack in the region isn't good enough for you?" I asked softly.
"Greed is an excellent path to death. Just ask my father."
Ferrara was on his feet and climbing over me in an instant. My back pressed into the mattress, and I stared at him, for the first time, without fear.
He needed me.
"Snapping my neck isn't going to get the information that you want." "True, but there is only so much pain a person can take before they break. Do you know your breaking point?" He whispered.
"A lifetime of torture, and no one's found the breaking point yet." I held his gaze longer than I'd ever looked any shifter in the eye. My heart pounded in my chest, and I swallowed hard.
Heat radiated from where his hard thighs pressed against mine, but there was no fear.
Even when his golden eyes flashed.
"You want to get to Wisteria Wood. You need me, but I'm not going to tell you how I did it. I'm not that stupid. I don't get anything out of that."
"Is there something you want, Violetta?" Was it just my imagination, or was his voice wrapping around me like that of a lover?
I tried not to think about that too hard. "You take me with you, but once you're there, I'm gone. You let me go with no strings attached."
"You think I trust you enough to lead me and my men through a territory teeming with danger?"
"I think if you're stupid enough to go, you want it enough to do anything. You could torture me for the information, but I guarantee it's nothing I haven't already experienced. Hard to torture a broken wolf. You can't threaten to kill me because I've been waiting for death for years. The only thing you can offer me is freedom, and we both know you aren't going to let me go until you have what you want. If you can fight off the rogue wolves, I can handle the magic of Wisteria Wood. I can get you to the compound, and then we're done. I go somewhere no one has ever heard of me. I change my name. And we're both free."
Free of this stupid bond that was clawing into me even now.
"Just like your father. No loyalty to anyone but yourself," he snarled.
He was wrong. I had plenty of loyalty. Enough that I would kill him before I let him set foot in that witch's compound.
"If you won't see a healer, then you need to shift and heal your damn leg. Get some sleep, and pack lightly. We leave first thing Friday morning."
He eased off me and headed for the door. I sucked in a deep breath and pushed myself up.
"There's just one other thing."
With a growl, he turned. "What?"
"We have to travel as humans. My wolf will never come out around your guards."
Or you.
He snarled and shoved the dresser so hard against the wall that it splintered. I winced at the sound. "One more thing."
"Christ," he hissed.
"Charlie isn't to touch me before we leave. He, or anyone else. He has a key to my apartment. For all I know, they all do."
"Confections bar is closed for business until Friday," he grunted and turned. "But the place will be watched. If you try to leave before then, they'll take you down, Violetta. By any means necessary."
ViolettaFor two days, I tried frantically to call her back. I needed to know what she knew. I needed to know why she'd wanted me to run.I needed her to know what Ferrara wanted me to do.My call never went through. It made sense. There were no phones deep in the mountains and definitely no phone service. However she'd made the call, it was clearly one way only.I couldn't warn her.Other than that, I worried. My knee and ankle were still swollen and bruised, but I was able to put more weight on it. As long as I moved carefully and wore pants, Ferrara wouldn't realize that I hadn't fully healed.Charlie never returned. None of the employees did. It occurred to me that this was the last time I'd be here. For three years, Confections bar had been my home. If everything went to plan, this would all just be a distant dream. It hadn't all been bad. When Parker gave me space, I'd actually been able to relax some.Listen to music, dance. When he didn't give me space, he was pushing me. He w
ViolettaThree hours in, I knew we weren't all going to make it.Despite bringing me along to lead them safely through the woods, Ferrara and his wolves continuously charged ahead of me and tried to make their own path. With every step I took, my knee grew worse and I slowed. Patience was not their strong suit. Alphas tended to rely on the power and loyalty that was always at their side, but we were traveling through a territory that didn't give a damn about any of that.Immediately, I could see the path he was trying to take. The most direct one. Four times, I cleared my throat delicately and purposefully turned to force us to wind a little wider around the mountain. On the fifth time, he roared."We need to take a break, and you need to cool off," I announced in a steady voice as I sat."How dare you talk to me like that," Ferrara snarled. "I am your alpha.""You are, and you're going to lead us all to our deaths. You want me to get you safely through Wisteria Woods, you're going to
FerraraThere were reasons I didn't spend much time around Violetta. Fucking important reasons. The security of my position as alpha was at stake. Just keeping her alive was enough to threaten it.I could kill her now and be done with it. I wouldn't be the first wolf to live without a mate. It would be one of those rare instances where being alone made you stronger. For three years, I stayed away. When Parker told me she was covered in scars, I said good. When he said she was terrified of everyone and everything, I told him it was justice. And when he told me she was taking an interest in the bar, I told him to shut it down.He didn't. For the first time ever, Parker defied me. And for the first time since his mate died, he took an interest in life. His reports changed in tune. He started berating me for ignoring her. When I finally snapped that she was lucky I didn't break her neck, he stopped reporting at all.Damn it, he hadn't been there when Cora dragged her broken body back to m
Ferrara"Ferrara?"At the sound of Bridget's voice, I turned to see Violetta stumble. With a grunt of pain, she fell. Everyone stopped and watched as she stood. Without a word to anyone, she started limping forward.Seeing her pain should have brought me joy, but instead, it just made my chest ache. We were close enough to the border. "Camp," I said quietly. "Shift and hunt for your dinner and get plenty of sleep. Tomorrow, the real work begins."We took a few minutes to set up a clearing, and then everyone except Saul, Violetta, and me shifted. My wolf also yearned to be out, to sidle up to her and comfort her, and for that reason alone, I stayed human.Saul went to Violetta's side and inflated the pillow for her knee. I settled just out of their sight and listened to them talk."When Cora first went missing, we had our witch try and track her. Irene is a powerful white witch, and she couldn't track my twin more than twenty feet from our boundary," Saul said quietly.Violetta inhaled
FerraraWe were outnumbered by three. Just as my wolf managed to get to his feet, another wolf threw himself on top of me. Around me, wolves roared, and I felt the pain of my shifters through their bonds. My claws ripped through flesh, but they had the advantage. I needed to get to my feet.Distantly, I heard Violetta scream again. There was a flash of orange, and fire seared my fur. Two of the wolves yelped and released their grip on me. I rose to see Violetta standing with a flaming log in her hand. Twisting, she picked up another log and swung it like a damn baseball bat.Rising, I gripped the one wolf still attached to me and snapped its neck. It fell, lifeless, to the ground, and I launched myself at the other two. One jerked away just in time, and the other one and I rumbled to the ground. It was smaller and leaner but scrappy. It got in a few good blows before I tore its throat open.Turning to search for the one who got away, I watched, in horror, as Violetta pulled out the fl
ViolettaI was in and out of consciousness, surfacing only to feel the racing panic of someone carrying me and then succumbing to my weakness. When I woke up, I was on the ground under a thick patch of evergreens. It was cool and shaded, but I could see the sun shining brightly through the openings of the branches.I'd lost an entire night."Don't panic. You're not alone," Ferrara said, crouching in front of me. "Or maybe that will make you panic. Hard to know, but it's just us."Letting out a small moan, I struggled to sit up. Leaning over, he grabbed me and gently propped me up next to a trunk. "Water. Food. Saul said it was imperative you replenish your energy reserve as quickly as possible. You lost too much blood."Eagerly, I accepted the water and energy bar. I drank so fast that I nearly coughed the water back up."Easy. There's no rush."Balefully, I glared at him. Yesterday, he was totally in a rush, and now he was acting like we had all the time in the world."Where are the
ViolettaVioletta slept until nightfall, and when she rose, there was more color in her cheeks. I watched carefully as she rose and stretched. Her steps were steady and confident, and her own relief was evident in her small smile."Do you think we're far enough from the boundary to shift and hunt?" I asked. I wasn't stupid enough to blindly trust her again, but after that last attack, I knew I needed her input. I'd only been to Wisteria Wood once when I was a kid. We barely survived the first two days before we had to turn back and take the long way around."Probably. I don't really know where we are, but I don't feel...I don't think we'll find trouble as long as we don't get any closer while it's still dark."Feel? Why would she stumble over that word?"We?" I asked as I stood. "You're not coming unless you shift."I hadn't meant to snarl at her. I'd never planned to leave her. Not because I thought she would run, but because she was a magnet for trouble. Still, giving her a challeng
ViolettaWhether it was exhaustion or lack of blood, I did manage to get a couple of hours of sleep. Just as the sun started to creep over the horizon, we headed out. Like I asked, Ferrara pulled his power in, and even I was fooled. He wasn't hiding his wolf. That wasn't possible, but when I focused on him, he just seemed like an average wolf shifter. That would make things easier. My injuries were mostly healed, so I moved faster and easier on foot. Ferrara was never more than an arm's length away from me, and I liked that even less.He was also in a chatty mood."You didn't respond to my order to shift," he said casually as we walked. "Care to explain how that's possible?""Maybe I'm stronger than you."His growl told me that it was the wrong thing to say. "As I'm sure you've already seen for yourself, my wolf is broken. It doesn't function.""Since when? Did something happen in my pack?"I snorted. "Worried that your edict to torment me has backfired? You can rest easy. I haven't s
ViolettaAnother night without Ferrara. I wasn't sleeping well, and as I trudged up to my room after a late night dinner in the mess hall, I considered calling Jenson and asking some more questions about the operations that were not day-to-day. Pulling out my phone, I remembered that he was planning to spend the night with Irene. So far, Maeve had not made another appearance, but I knew Irene was scared. She needed Jenson more than I did.Pocketing my phone, I turned down the hall and stopped short. There were noises coming from my bedroom.Loud noises.Squealing?Laughter. It abated, and I opened the door cautiously. Amelia, Kenzi, Cindy, Janelle, and Ava had piled onto my bed. There was a huge spread of food on the table, and music playing from a speaker somewhere."Hi," I said dumbly. "What is happening here?""Girl's night!" Janelle called out. When I stared at her, she frowned. "You've never had a girl's night, have you?""Did Jenson put this together because he was tired of me c
ViolettaOne by one, I bonded with the others. Lucy, Raven, and Carla. I was desperate not to show it, but bonding the four women in quick succession drained me. Finn and Kenzi left to shower and rest, and Jenson escorted me back to my room."When was the last time you've eaten?" he asked in a low voice."I had a box of crackers on the way here," I claimed proudly. Okay, a box was stretching the truth. I'd had maybe five or six crackers."Rest. I'm going to have food sent up to you," he ordered.I was tired, but that didn't mean I was going to shirk my duties. "As soon as Finn and Kenzi have showered, I need to talk with them," I protested."They've been pushing themselves for days. They're going to need more than a shower. They're going to rest, and we can all have dinner together."He stopped at my bedroom, and I narrowed my eyes at him. "You are not supposed to order me around.""Uh-huh. I liked it better when you were a submissive," he sighed. "Rest. Eat. There will be plenty for
Violetta"I don't understand. You accessed your magic in human form before, when your wolf forced you to use it. Do I need to fatally wound someone to let that happen?" Evalina snarled in frustration at my recent failure.Today's assignment? Offensive magic. All I had to do was move a stick. One lousy stick.Instead, I was covered in sweat, and the stick just sat in its original place in the grass, mocking me."I wouldn't risk it. I don't think me moving this stick is going to save anyone today," I panted and sat down in the grass. This was a better workout than any cardio. Muscles I didn't even know I had ached at the strain of trying to move that damn branch.I expected the Crone to force me up, but she just went unnaturally still, and her eyes grew vacant. Worried it was Maeve, I jumped to my feet, but she held out her hand. "It's Lunessa. They've made it to the compound. She and your mate are fine."Blowing out my breath, I relaxed. I knew Ferrara was fine. I could still feel him
FerraraIt was Saris who put her hand out. "Please. I have told Broderick many times that his enthusiasm is enough to send anyone screaming into the forest. Eat your dinner. Stay the night. You will no longer be pestered with questions.""She is right," Broderick sighed. "I would never forgive myself if I scared you straight into the arms of danger."I let my gaze linger on Saris for a bit longer. She was pretty, almost in an ethereal way, and maybe that's why I sensed something odd about her. I'd certainly never met a human like her.Was she Broderick's mate? I didn't sense a mating bond, but she had some sort of control over him.Glancing back at Lunessa, I sighed and took my seat once again. "One night for your hospitality, we will try to answer a few of your questions in the morning. I will answer them," I amended. "And then we will be on our way."They seemed pleased with that, and we finished our dinner with light conversation. There were no more questions about Emerson. At the
FerraraRelief swept through me when I didn't recognize the grizzled man at the head of the table. Not that he would recognize me, with this face, but it still helped. Lunessa clutched my arm as we were escorted to the table, and I pulled the chair out for her."Thank you for your kindness," I said quietly. "My mate and I have had a difficult journey. My name is Kenrys, and this is Luana.""To be true to ourselves, we must extend our hand to those who need it," the wolf said in a gravelly voice. "I am Broderick. The man to my left is Henry, and the lovely lady to my right is Saris."Broderick's wolf was powerful, and he didn't hesitate to unleash that power at the dinner table. I bowed my head and avoided meeting his eyes as I took the chair. My wolf, hidden behind Lunessa's magic, grumbled unhappily, but he didn't try to break free. He knew what we were doing here and what he needed to do.Henry was a witch. I could sense the magic in him, but Saris seemed completely human. Not a dro
FerraraLunessa was exhausted. We were within several miles of the coordinates given to us, and she already looked the part in the role that we were about to play. Dirt streaked her face and clothes, and dark circles hung under her eyes, and I knew it wasn't the glamour she'd donned. I'd seen her shimmer from her dark hair to blonde, from her dark eyes to blue, adjusting the structure of her body and even shortening her height and giving herself more curves. There'd been no dirt on her then. We'd moved as fast as we could, and the witch had lied about being all right with the pace we were making. Now she winced from the blisters I knew had to be on her feet. I could smell her blood, and the quiet whimpers she thought she was hiding were built from rock-solid determination. She had a stake in this fight. I didn't know if it was just about protecting the witches or her friends, and I had started to think of her as a friend, or something else entirely. Now that we were so close to the co
ViolettaMindy was dead. I'd met her for the first time just a few days ago, crossing her path after one of my failed magic attempts. She'd smiled shyly at me and told me that I was glowing. The thought of that soft and sweet voice made my heart ache. She'd been on the guard for less than six months. But I couldn't focus on that now. There were rogue wolves pouring out of the woods, and they'd broken the first line of defense. Jenson and I met up with a wolf barreling our way before we could even reach the skirmish. I shifted instantly, launching myself at him. He was easily twice my size, but I didn't have to worry. While he pinned me down, Jenson slit his throat.Ruthless and efficient. I'd always known, but it was a little terrifying to see the second in action. Jenson shifted afterward and caught up with me. Together, we took down another rogue wolf before we happened upon Mindy's body.Rage filled me, and I ripped into the fray. Whatever the rogue's plan, these wolves were nothin
ViolettaI had questions. Why was she asking? Who was she asking for? Amelia refused to tell me, and I hoped it wasn't for her. Whatever she and Finn were going through, she didn't deserve to miss out on the chance of having a mate. Especially when they were both so great.Ferrara and I had dinner alone. I peppered him with questions about the day-to-day operations of the pack, and he answered all of them patiently while reminding me that Jenson would also be here to help me.Not the other way around, which I strongly suggested. After getting settled in the bed, he pulled me across his lap and wrapped his arms around me. "We can drive for eight hours of the trip, but then we'll have to travel for a day and a half on foot. Lunessa will be hiding much of her magic so she just seems like an ordinary witch, and I'll be pulling in my power as well. Evalina is also providing us with glamour bags so no one will recognize us.""A witch might see the glamour bag," I said with a frown."It does
ViolettaIt did not take me long to find Amelia. She was at her usual desk, hunched over her computer. Her eyes were rimmed red. I knew Ferrara was forcing her to take breaks, eat healthier, and sleep at night, so I had a feeling her red eyes weren't just from screen fatigue."How's it going," I asked casually as I hopped up on the desk. She didn't answer."So Ferrara is taking Lunessa to go after the cult. Weird that they didn't want to involve me, given that I'm the subject of the day and his mate. Instead, he thinks it's best to leave me here to run the pack with Jenson. You know, I don't think Jenson and I have had a single conversation out of the you don't belong here, you're not worthy of him crap he used to tell me before this. Now we're going to run a pack together. Are you worried, because I am totally not worried. Okay, I'm a little worried. Do you miss Finn? If you're worried that he and Kenzi are getting it on, I wouldn't. Finn's not an idiot, and only an idiot would get i
